Nintendo Explains Why They Are Still In The Hardware Business

new_super_mario_bros_u_float

Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta has explained exactly why Nintendo is still in the hardware business despite naysayers calls for the company to go third-party. Scibetta says that he believes that Nintendo consoles come to life when the software and the hardware work in harmony together.

“Nintendo systems come to life the best when the hardware and software work in perfect harmony. That’s why we’re still in the hardware business, because we think our hardware is the best way to bring software to life. It’s tuned perfectly for that. When Mario bounces from mushroom to mushroom, it feels so responsive because the software has been tuned especially for that hardware.”

          1. Proud Nintendo Fanboy

            @ The Dark Assassin,
Then get the hell off this site if that’s how you feel? Don’t you have anything better to do?

            1. Seriously. Like 1/3 of this site is people bagging on Nintendo, when it should really just be Nintendo fans. Ticks me off.

    1. Sony fan boys want to play Mario, lol. So they come here to bitch and say “wii u is for kiddy gamers.”

        1. Ratchet and Clank is losing it’s charm. Besides saying “playstation has ratchet and clank for that” means what exactly?

          1. Ratchet and Clank is for 3 year-old faggot preschool mother fuckin’ assholes who can’t take Mario. Mario is for the hardest of the hardcore. Mario fucks Ratchet and Clank in the asshole before lunch and still has time to save the Princess. FUCK YOU TITAN7 FOR HATING ON MARIO, YOU FUCKIN FAGGOT WANNABE GAMER

      1. Proud Nintendo Fanboy

Exactly. I was just wondering lately why the heck so many people keeps going on these Nintendo sites and posting negative comments about Nintendo. If they HATE Nintendo, why do they bother?

    2. it’s funny, but i thought of a reason. in the internet (even though it depresses me a bit), i read gamers saying “mario games are for kids”, “they are always making mario games”, etc. but then, they say “mario should become a 3rd party and make games for iPhone and PS”. then that means those gamers WANT to play nintendo games, but they don’t want to buy a nintendo console for it, so what they do is to criticise the games, which i find a bit lame. i mean, i would really like to play the naruto games for ps3 and xbox, or hyperdimension neptunia, but i don’t have a ps3/xbox360. but, because of that, i will not go saying “naruto games sucks” or “neptunia is a bad RPG”

    3. Because they don’t have to buy an extra console to enjoy Nintendo 1st party games. Ask all the true gamers what is their favourite series. *notice the plural* I bet you most of them like one of the Nintendo series. (I have no complains if they doesn’t like any of Nintendo 1st party games from me.)

Believe it or not but asking this question is the same thing as asking for 3rd party games to be on the Nintendo consoles. Because we don’t want to buy PS4 or/and Xbox One just to play 3rd party games.

    4. The reason is because it makes sense from a business standpoint for them to drop hardware. Their software is killer, and sells unbelievable numbers, so to analysts, they see no point in throwing the huge profits they make into what analysts believe is outdated hardware. The problem though is these analysts are only looking at the short term, and don’t consider what this could mean for Nintendos software in the long term. As Nintendo states, their software is killer BECAUSE of the fact that they can tune hardware specifically to their ideas. Nintendos hardware and software developers work very closely to get the best performance and experiences, so for Nintendo to drop hardware would mean their software will inevitably suffer, especially considering that dropping hardware will bring in a lot more middle men to get in the way of Nintendos ideas, and that’s what these analysts don’t get.

  1. Could he say otherwise?

But, definitely, I don’t agree with him. He gave such a poor reason.

Sony is doing much, much better then Nintendo. Sadly.

    1. it’s not a poor reason. they made the hardware => they know perfectly the hardware => it’s easier for them to make a game that fits to that hardware. if they wanted to make a game for PS4, for example, they would have to study its hardware, made experiments and it could be harder to make a game.

    2. Believe it or not, Nintendo could sell less consoles than Sony this generation and STILL be successful. We all know the Wii U will by default, sell better than the Xbox One simply because Microsoft has no hold on a global scale. I can’t imagine Nintendo has any more “innovation” up their sleaves for next generation after the Wii U. I suspect they’ll make a super powered console that supports the Wii U tablet in the future. For now, we have the awesome system known as the Wii U and I plan to play a great many of amazing games on it from this time in August to the end of it’s lifespan. Nintendo4Life!💋

    1. It is Nintendo. Thats the only reason why. It would be a great disservice if a Nintendo 1st party games came out on an Xbox or Sony console. I will quit gaming the day Nintendo quits the hardware business. Cause thats when I know it’s all gone to shit! 💋

  2. In other words dont want to bother to learn how to code. 100% legitimate reason though. Better than the monkeys at bethesda who still dont know how to code for the ps3

    1. They know perfectly well how to code. Notice how they made games? Games need to be coded, therefore they know how to code

    1. I hope if they can’t sell hardware anymore, they just close up shop and lock their fantastic 1st party games away forever. I only want to see/ hear of them on a Nintendo console. It would be an absolutely horrific, dreadful, disgusting day, the day Nintendo goes 3rd party. I don’t think I could stomache seeing Mario bounce on his mushrooms through a television screen hooked
up to an Xbox…. and no Nintendo console :,( 💋

  3. ‘When Mario bounces from mushroom to mushroom, it feels so responsive because the software has been tuned especially for that hardware.’

    LOL what??

    1. I agree that the Wiimote and Gamepad uses Nintendo games well, and couldn’t be done on other platforms without those devices, such as Pikmin 3, Wii Sports. But that Mario statement was terrible, how the fuck would him bounces on mushrooms be different elsewhere lol. Damn Nintendo needs better PR lol. His example could have been their wouldnt be motion controls on PS3 if it wasn’t established on Wii first, so our Wii Sports game couldn’t be made elsewhere, Nintendoland or ZombiU wouldn’t have epic gamepad gameplay on other consoles, because they dont use this technology. Jumping mushrooms makes the game in tuned on the hardware, get the fuck outta here lol. Fire that man!

  4. Interesting…

I will report his news to my superiors. Could be useful for the upcoming war this November.

    1. I have taken care of your superiors, Dark Assasin. You answer to no one as of
      now. Muhahahahahahaha!! 💋

    1. Nintendo 64 was amazing and so was the Gamecube( My favorite console of all time and it had the BEST controller!) I was young when I had those 2 systems so it never occured to me that maybe they weren’t actually received well. Makes me sad, because they gave birth to my most most favorite games on my whole life! Smash Bros Melee, Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros. Origional, Kirby 64, Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Metroid Primes, Starfox 64, Mario Kart DOUBLE DASH!, Mario Party 1-7, Luigis Mansion, Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD, Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium 2, Pokemon Snap, Animal Crossing, Pikmin 1-2, Hey You Pikachu!, Legend of Zelda Orcarina of Time, and I am sure I am forgetting some that I would Squeeeee to if I heard their names. :) 💋

      1. I was shocked when I found out the GameCube sold poorly considering it had actually good games. GameCube was a system that truly had innovation that people keep on talking about today. It was a system when they said innovation they where talking about sunshine not smbU. It was a time when sonic wasn’t in the shitter (yes I’m talking adventure 2 battle and heros…don’t hate). The GameCube had twilight princess and wind waker. Sadly though most these great games went over people’s heads and I believe it’s why Nintendos playing it safe. They tried sunshine with Mario and people didn’t give two shits. So what do we get? Super Mario world 3D.

  5. I would honestly be pretty sad if Nintendo stopped making hardware as im sure many others would. Their consoles just have that certain charm to them that I love. ex. the wiiu has the gamepad, the wii had motion controls, the gamecube was shaped like a cube haha, etc.

  6. I think it was pretty obvious that Nintendo made consoles for their games, only on Consoles made for them by them they could make games that in some way or another feel magic; if they start making games for other consoles, the magic on the Nintendo games would be lost.

  7. nintendo made the Wii U hardware good ONLY for their games, they never think about what other developers wanted. now because of that they are struggling with 3rd party support. nintendo should have hear what 3rd party wanted but they went selfish on that part.

    1. Exactly, my friend. A a video game platform should be open and welcoming to all developers not just the one who made the console in the first place.

      1. They do their own games, they hire some of the good creative devs, they think about giving fans the best experience. I nintendo offered all, there wouldn’t be competition and offer

    2. Third parties are only putting lazy ports of old 360/PS3 games onto Wii U and thinking people will buy it. They then wonder why their games are not selling, and why Nintendo’s console isn’t selling a lot.

Besides, Nintendo not giving them the latest-and-greatest tech and developers not being satisfied with it. Despite the fact that some incredibly stuff is possible with the system (Mario Kart 8 and Monolith’s X to name a couple), doesn’t this really say more about third party developers either being incredibly spoiled, unimaginative, lazy, or perhaps not talented in optimization? ;)

    3. The reason Microsoft and Sony rely on 3rd part is because they don’t make many of their own games. Nintendo makes a ton of their own games, So they don’t need to rely on 3rd party As heavily

      1. What are u talking about? Sony makes tons of their own games and get tons of third party support. It’s the reason the ps1 and ps2 sold so much and why the ps3 is alive and still kicking while the n64 and GameCube sold like shit and wii being dead for a long while before the wii u was just a rumor.

        1. Except Nintendo has the most overal console sales in the entire world. The DS is the best selling console ever. Nintendo Wii outsold PS3 and Xbox360 (most recent console war). Heck. the gameboy advance sold more than the PS3 and Xbox 360. In the top 5 best selling consoles Nintendo holds 3 spots while Sony holds 2. 💋

    4. You can tell the Boss what you want, but he may see things differently.
The industry seems to want to destroy itself with hyper-realism that bankrupts companies. And let’s not have the Power arguement when engines are perfectly scalable and last gen’s systems are getting ports, but sadly no Wii U.
Nintendo has an open door – the lies these developers tell are sad.

      1. Do it! It’s still out there, isn’t it? Was te best game I played in some years, with great story and combat system. My first run was 80+ then I tried to complete 100% on the second run and finished at 100+

        1. I am thinking about getting it, also I never played The last Story or Pandora’s Tower! :,( I never got the last of the Wii games. 💋

  8. Hopefully they’ll start taking care of more mature gamers, too. If you were considering buying a Wii U and you’re in your 20’s (there’s an opinion coming up) they showed nothing besides X at E3 to sway you from the competition.

I hope they stay in business and produce games that don’t just star cute characters. Throw some of your ‘gaming since the early 90’s’ fans a Metroid or somethin’; don’t just do risky stuff when your back’s against the wall, aka: the Gamecube days.

I’m just asking for a little balance – 90% of Nintendo characters are cute. You don’t have to make M rated games to satisfy a mature gamers’ palate. But you can alienate your long-time buyers by playing it safe. If only Metroid had been at E3…

    1. Keep in mind, they do Nintendo Directs every month or so, and I’d say every other month we get an exciting presentation with lots of news. We can wish something was at E3, but it doesn’t matter as much anymore if we’re going to get more news like that year round. We don’t have to wait until 2014 for another huge chunk of news, just wait another month or two. They’re likely in the works of something like Metroid and likely have been for a while (considering the last one came out nearly 3 years ago). They just need time and didn’t wanna show something half-assed. They could announce anything even more exciting that wasn’t at E3.

Remember last year? Granted, this was hardware, but they announced the 3DS XL in their Nintendo Direct RIGHT after E3 2012. Clearly they’re moving away from E3.

  9. His reasoning wasn’t exactly the best.

I hate to give this analogy … but it’s why Apple doesn’t license iOS the same way Google licenses Android. People can brag about their phone or tablet having a quad-core or octa-core processors, but they don’t automatically improve performance. Developers need to use them (and they don’t). The iPhone’s more efficient with only two cores because it allocates tasks that can be better performed by the GPU to the GPU in order to save cycles, and is a better-designed SoC. Dalvik, the runtime for Android, is really slow. It’s so slow that V8, Google’s javascript engine, can sometimes outpace it.

In other words, software optimization > adding more horsepower.

So, the same can be said with Nintendo. It’s important for Nintendo to stay in this hardware business because they’re the LAST game company that provides this very integrated experience of being the hardware AND software company. We KNOW how they’re especially good at using what they have and not needing the greatest cutting-edge technology. Aside from the difference in resolution, many Wii games still looked very good. Hell, we recently saw how Nintendo can optimize software by significantly reducing the load times on their Wii U OS without changing the hardware.

I’m reminded of that meme with the astronaut, “More powerful than the Apollo 11? It must make your trips to the moon much easier.”

You can have the greatest hardware, but it doesn’t matter if developers aren’t doing anything impressive with it.

    1. Not at all. I know what they’re saying and Mario is the perfect example. His tight gameplay mechanics are always tuned into the platform he’s on. Galaxy is a perfect example. It couldn’t of been done as a multiplat.

  10. Nintendo \o/

They are the best company in the world. Nintendo and us real gamers will make Klony fps an Microshit fps go out of business with their mindless shooters! :)

  11. Gaming would lose it’s life if Nintendo just left. I love Sony, but their consoles are so lifeless. They lack feeling, or soul.

  12. Nintendo makes great video games and consoles, but they need to wake up and realize their is competition now. Nintendo needs to not just make the most creatively innovative video games, but they must keep up with and lead industry standards in technical graphics and artistic size and scope like they used to be.

    1. Well, their current system outputs in HD, and goes up to 1080p should the game support it.

So you’re one of those fellows that believes,
“DEY BETTA HAV DA MOST HIGH TECHNICAAAL MACHINE LOLOLOL”

What, they need more tessellation, polygons, higher-res textures and better lighting effects, that’s holding their games back?

SOFTWARE OPTIMIZATION! Goodness me, people think adding a 12 core processor would automatically fix the Wii U.

      1. Nintendo fell behind industry standards last generation in terms of technical graphics and open world games, Nintendo struggles with HD games, NSMBU is just 720p, not even 1080HD. Nintendo games do not compare to Uncharted or Last of Us. The generation before, I felt Super Mario Sunshine was better than Ratchet and Clank or Jak and Daxter. Now Nintendo games are behind everyone else on a technical level, that is why the Wii U has no games coming out. That’s why Wii U went a year with no games. Nintendo can’t make something compared to Metal Gear Solid V, or Final Fantasy 14-2, or Dragons Dogma, GTA V, Dark Souls, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Halo 4, God of War 3, Killzone 3, online multiplayer of COD, the competition has technically left Nintendo in the dust.

        1. They went a full year without any MUST-have titles because they needed more time to develop them, not because “they can’t compete.” That’s absolutely ridiculous logic. “We won’t make games for a full year because we can’t compete.” Obviously not their reasoning, otherwise why put out a system to begin with? (Logic, where art thou?)

So, you like Super Mario Sunshine more than Ratchet and Clank because it’s “technically superior?” You liked it for all the wrong reasons then.

Also, New Super Mario Bros. U and Pikmin 3 are both 720p games, but they also run at 60fps. They were also developed on earlier dev kits, not the finalized hardware. So obviously they were working with limited hardware, as well as working with games, like NSMB U, that were not really optimized much at all to get the game out for the Wii U launch.

However, if you’ve been paying attention to anything, the Zelda: Wind Waker remake was confirmed to be FULL HD, 1080p, as well as Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

You absolutely fail to consider that software optimization could very much make the visuals look just as clean as what you’re seeing on the other platforms.

It’s like the example that I made in an earlier comment, having a phone with an Octa-core processor doesn’t automatically mean it’ll be faster. Developers need to USE the cores. They don’t, because if they did, these quad-core/octa-core phones would blow away phones like the iPhone in real-world performance when it comes to speed and smoothness. ;)

          1. There was no new games because they couldn’t make them, plain and simple. Nintendo fell behind, you are either delusional or deluding yourself. Yes, I like SMS because it was technically as good as anything out there and it was a good game. Nintendo knows innovation and fun games, but that’s not enough, they have to make games that stand above the rest on every technical level as well.

            1. Games like Pikmin 3 and The Wonderful 101 slipped due to delays. They were able to make them, they were just delayed unexpectedly, simple as that.

TO YOU, that isn’t enough, but they don’t need to be “technically” as good as the rest. They don’t “HAVE” to make their games stand above the rest technically. Super Mario Galaxy wasn’t rendered in HD, but it managed to compete well with other titles.

What you fail to see is that specs don’t automatically make the experience better. It’s like people that say “I can build my own PC and it’ll be 10x better dan ur mac LOLOL.” If the person can enjoy the visuals and enjoy the game, who cares what’s in the box?

Especially now when gamers are increasingly less impressed with the visuals of the PS4 and the Xbox One, we are witnessing this law of diminishing returns. So, the Wii U being just a tad more powerful than the PS3 and 360 would already make it visually capable.

And, as I keep saying (because you keep ignoring this), developer optimization is key. Nintendo have proven that they can optimize for lower powered hardware and still make their games look good. Resolution isn’t an issue anymore.

Smash Bros. runs at 1080p @ 60fps. Other games on other consoles (presumably) run at 1080p @ 60fps. The average consumer isn’t going to hate on Smash Bros. and say “Man, you know, this game isn’t as fun because there just aren’t as many textures as I’d hoped…and you know, I wish they added more polygons as well.” Absolutely asinine.

  13. This will never happen. Even iF Nintendo dropped put of console gaming. They would keep all their IP’s and make even Bad-assier handhelds to play their IP’s on.
Nintendo won’t be going 3rd party folks.

  14. LOL WHY WOULD THE OBVIOUS NEED EXPLAINING LOL LTFOL

THE MOST PRFITABLE,SUCCESSFUL GAMING COMPANY ON EARTH
NEEDS TO EXPLAIN THE OBVIOUS ,NINTENDO A COMPANYGOING BACK HUNDREDS OF YEARS AT HUGE PROFITS NEEDS TO EXPLAIN ITS SELF

OH MY GOD THE WORLD HAS GONE MAD

LOL NINTENDO DOOMED THEY COUKD BUY SONY 10 X OVER

    1. That’s actually true. Many people don’t know this, but Nintendo is actually bigger and richer than Sony. But not Microsoft.

  15. I believe it is more like this. “Because we want to make money off hardware and control what games can go by our standards.”

    1. Or, because making the hardware and software work together delivers a far better, more integrated experience?

If one company does it all, the experience is a lot more cohesive.

You call it control, but at the end of the day, the consumer’s going to play the most polished games optimized precisely for the hardware they run on. ;)

  16. and there you have it folks. Nintendo will be in the hardware business for as long as they are selling software. So stop with all the “doom and gloom.” It makes my ears bleed. Mamma Jynx don’t like when her ears bleed. 💋

  17. big three are overrated

Sega tuned their games for their hardware too, but they became 3rd parties because even though Dreamcast was good console people didnt buy it enough and they didnt have money. My point is that Nintendo is in hardware business because they have smart business guys workin for them. They even made profit from Gamecube. Nintendo becames 3rd party only when their hardware business stops creatin profit for them. I dont believe we will see that day luckily, but in the end its about games, so if Nintendo needs at some point to turn into 3rd party to survive im not gonna complain.

  18. Nintendo doesn’t need to FUCKING EXPLAIN why they are still in the hardware business! They have been the king of gaming for almost 30 years now! Why are Sony still in the hardware business?????

  19. I’m glad that Nintendo is still in the Hardware business. Overall they are a consistently good gaming company and I doubt that they’ll be falling anytime soon. I may not have been overly impressed with the Wii/WiiU but all of their other consoles have been top notch!

    1. get a grip sony and ms casual fans

No onr cares EXPLAIN INDUSTRY LEADING SALES AND PROFIT PLEASE

Explain dieing cod dieinv halo dieing ea dieing industry YET MARIO SELLS MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND DOESNT STOP

And pleade explain how the wiiu is a mario jumping on a mushroom ITS A ELECTRONICAL GAMING DEVICE NOT A MAN IN A DILLY COSTOM JUMPING ON A THING

  20. Nintendo doesn’t owe anyone an explanation about why they do what they do except their investors. The same applies to Sony and Microsoft. Any serious gamer, not fanboy/fangirl would realize that when you play games, such as, Mario Galaxy 1 or 2, Skyward Sword, or Luigi’s mansion 2, that they games are created for the hardware that you play them on. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if Nintendo stops creating hardware, I’m done with gaming. Why? First, gaming would boring. Finally, what makes many of their games special is the hardware. Their games wouldn’t have that same magic on a Microsoft or Sony console!

  21. get a grip sony and ms casual fans

YEAH AND 3RD PARTYS NEED TO DO THE SAME BUILD THE GAMES TO THE HARDWARE

Battlefield type experiances ARE CRYING OUT FOR WII REMOTE PLUS AND GAMEPAD IT EXPANDS AND EVOLVES THE GAME EXPERIANCE

Gamepad tacticle pad and second view with crisp core wii remote fps

OH LOOK I JUSTVDISCRIBED NEXT GEN LOL DUALSHOCK

  22. This policy is precisely right – one of the reasons why I vastly prefer Nintendo consoles to the competition is this. The vast amount of first party games which are developed by people who understand the ins and outs of the system. Neither Microsoft or Sony offer much of this – in fact, Microsoft don’t offer ANY of this. A games console is only as good as its exclusives in my books, and all this is why Nintendo need to continue making hardware.
