Controversial Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes that Nintendo is currently in a world of trouble. Pachter cites the lack of third-party support for the company’s latest home console, coupled with the looming release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as a problem that Nintendo doesn’t seem able to fix. Pachter genuinely questions why anyone would choose to buy a Wii U at this point in time.
“The publishers are pretty excited to support the Xbox One and the PS4 – they really didn’t say anything about the Wii U. And we know EA has no games in development for Wii U. If Activision pulls support; if you see Ubisoft , you see Take-Two pull support, the Wii U is a Nintendo-only gaming device which is what they were back with the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985. They’re not going to sell a lot of consoles if they don’t have games like FIFA and Battlefield and Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto. Due to that, Pachter asks a simple rhetorical question: “Why would anybody buy a Wii U?”

Second, it’s the chicken and the egg. Nintendo made the mistake of not releasing any strong first party games up to this point because they didn’t want to alienate third parties. Nuts to that. Once the strong first party games start rolling out, the console will become popular. Then third parties will want a slice of the pie. Let them go, for now. They’ll come crawling back.

The NES was the system that had the most 3rd party support including EA. He is also wrong about Ubisoft not having games all except Crew (and the other one) are coming and there allot of signs COD: Ghosts is coming, along with other Activistion games. Disney is showing support. Sega has games coming. Capcom has a few eShop games. I expect some more Japanese suppost with be announced at the Tokyo Show in the fall. Its not perfect by any means, but there is definitely 3rd party support for the christmas season.
Also, we can’t forget the smaller independent games that are coming.

in all fairness off tv play is so overrated! you can get decent hdtv’s or hd monitors for £100 to £150, which will always look miles better then the games do on the game pad screen, seriously, if it was fully hand held then fair enough, by would you bother when you could have a 3ds? i for one hardly ever use off tv play, i would much more have preferred Nintendo use the money that when into the game pad, to have made the wii u more powerful and make it more future proof, that way we still would have gotten all those great Nintendo first party games, and also for once, get proper third party support!
Off tv play is laggy, i don’t care what anyone says, it has input lag, and terrible dead zones on the game pad, and that’s on wii u aa games, like Assassins creed 3, and blops 2, and many more, also the input lag makes the virtual console games difficult to play too, seriously, play the vc games on wii u for a bit, then play it on wii, or better yet the originals, or even play the wii u versions with the wiimote if its available, trust me you will notice the difference straight away, and if you don’t, your most likely one of those people who say 60fps is the same as 30fps, and that you cant tell the difference, LOLOL their are so many like this!
Maybe its because i have been spoiled, and because i game on and own all platforms, maybe thats why i am more sensitive, but regardless, i think the wiimote and wii motion plus where much better then the gamepad!
i would have much more preferred if the pro controller was the primary controller for wii u and if one came in every wii u box! also if they would have stuck to the wiimote, and improved it, skyward sword, and metroid prime trlogy proved that the wiimote and nunchuck and wiimotion plus where the closest you could get to mouse like pin point accuracy, while having a fluid control input with the nunchuck
Playing off-screen i reckon is not used by many and is instead a minority, the whole idea of playing a aaa console game is to enjoy the experience fully on the big screen, and the game pad screen just does not do the games justice!
Even Nintendo themselves are hardly supporting it,and just like 3d games on the 3ds, it seems Nintendo will most likely distance themselves from it!

It is an overated feature, and i believe it was way to ‘hyped’ by nintendo prior to the Wii U’s launch. every commercial was just like, ‘is your family going to watch sports? just switch to the game pad!’. im watching tv, and on my wii u browser right now. i find it more accessable than ipad 2, and the games which i have for my wii u are by far more fun than ios games, also ive owned every ps console and always return to nintendo because quality is quality over quantity. my ps3 burned up in 8 mnths, my wii has last 3 years and counting. my wii u works as it should. miiverse is pretty nice social networking. entertaing and informative with far fewer trolls than possible to imagine. ur not there for one.
also backwards compatability is convienant, espescially if u want to trade in ur older system at gamestop or best buy for a discount for up to 30% off, and that helps the pocket. yet i didnt trade my wii in, cause it still plays gamecube games, which is pretty nice considering i still like my gamecube games cause my gamecube finally died 9 years after owning it.. which is why i bought a wii 3 years ago… but u know, Nintendo is shit right, they don hav no good games.

So many devs/pubs and people in the gaming media seem determined to create a foregone conclusion; they’ve decided Nintendo will fail, so they’re trying to make it happen. I have every expectation that Nintendo will survive. What will happen next generation I cannot say, but Nintendo will continue making games and system until it no longer proves profitable, which given their track record won’t be for a very, VERY long time yet.
At this point I don’t think I even want many of these third parties who have shown their true colours to even put titles on the system, because i don’t see why I should support such two-faced companies.

There are also a bunch of people who are kind of tired of the kinds of games big production companies are making for consoles. Very samey, hand-holding, homogenized action games. A lot of people are looking for a refreshing return to what got them interested in gaming in the first place

I own a Wii U and I agree with Pachter’s rhetorical question. There really isn’t a reason to buy a Wii U at this point in time. The titles that will make the console worthwhile are too far off. It’s not worth buying a Wii U right now for NSMBU (or the Luigi DLC) alone. And you can hardly make an argument for the third party titles, because many of them were already out on other consoles for months and most of them are better on said consoles.
Right now, you’re right. Later on there will be reasons (games) to get the console. Same thing I waited to get a 3DS this year: there’s games I wanted.

I find you mistaken on your “The Future” comment. The vast majority of things I see being done with the touch screen on the game pad just make me ask “Why isn’t there a button for this? It would work so much better.” Now I can get behind the second screen showing useful extra information, but I don’t see that as being crucial to my gaming experience, that’s more like the whipped cream you add to your pie, completely unnecessary, but a nice addition.

Innovation and immersion are what makes great games. Sure, Zelda will come out in 2015, so many people will buy a Wii U for that, but we haven’t seen it and it’s still early in development. So there’s no real system seller until sometime in 2014.

Let’s look at the main Nintendo audience. We have a new Mario adventure coming, 3D World. Cry “rehash” and “same old thing” all you want, but those games still sell like hotcakes. Stuff like Wii Fit sold like crazy on the Wii and many bought consoles for that. Whether that audience is still here, only time will tell.
It may be $50 cheaper, but Sony adds on extra costs outside the initial purchase. An example would be my Vita. I had to buy a memory card just for saves. It wasn’t even a good one, just 8gb. And 8gb is $30. I’m betting a second ps4 controler will be well above $50. It has that touch pad after all.
Well I buy Nintendo consoles because they make games I love to play, that’s the main reason I buy them. I mostly buy Nintendo handhelds for Pokemon because you know they are basically Pokemon machines, everything else is a bonus for me. It’s been that way for me since the GBC, and it’s not changing anytime soon. I really don’t care for what he has to say, he doesn’t influence what I buy and like, and he shouldn’t influence neither of you. Just ignore the guy.

When you have the option to shell out $560 for something that you can already get on a console you already own for $500 less, you’re gonna go with the cheaper option.
Does Call of Duty sell well? Yes.
Is it enough to purchase a brand new console? Not really.

So far for the Xbox One, there aren’t a lot in terms of system sellers either. The main Xbox demographic doesn’t really know what Killer Instinct is and Halo 5 hasn’t really been promised yet.
For all we know, the Xbox One could go through a similar drought at the very beginning.

Yeah, but lots of people have been waiting for the next generation. The reason most gamers haven’t switched to Wii U is because they know it’s only a little bit more powerful than the current generation. So there’s no point switching. But the PS4 and X1 should have a much larger jump graphically. I know many people who have been saving up and waiting for either the PS4 or, as they called it a while back, the Xbox 720.
Xbox One has TitanFall (PC does too but that doesn’t really matter; console-related, it’s exclusive to X1).

The Xbox’s main audience loves mainly shooters and sports games.
People buy Nintendo consoles for mostly platformers and the occasional RPG, along with games anybody can pick up and play.
Sony’s audience is very well-rounded. They play racers, shooters, platformers, LOTS of RPG’s, beat-em-ups, etc.
He doesn’t acknowledge the Japanese audience, or the fact that people who play primarily on Nintendo (Which I don’t recommend, go for a PS or something to get more games) have different tastes.

I bought a Wii U. Not because of the games it had at launch, but because of the potential it had for offering a different experience with existing and classic characters. The exact same reason I bought a Wii. My family owns all of the current Gen consoles. Our intro to the next Gen is the Wii U. Nintendo has set the bar for years now when it comes to gaming. FIFA and Call Of Duty hold no long term interest for me. They are easily replaced, upgraded, and cheaper to purchase secondary market. Nintendo offers a quality character based game that no one, shy of Sega, has been able to offer or replicate. The Wii U is lacking support, and lacking the attention now offered to the 3DS by Nintendo. It will happen however, it’s just a matter of time. In all reality the Wii U is poised to rule the holiday season here in the west, which will drive sales in the east. It’s more affordable, no one else is offering titles that are long term “fun” players at the moment (even the other next gen consoles). Sure, every next gen console has a great offering. Nintendo just always has a knack for offering a game that my family and I will play over and over again. That’s why I bought one. I’m not alone either. There are plenty of gamers that agree. Maybe it’s a niche market, or simple nostalgia, or maybe it’s because Nintendo offers something more than limited time enjoyment in a sports or a battle/war themed game? I think so. Waiting to see what Sony and Xbox will come out with, but playing my Wii U while I’m waiting.

Not quite true. I know tons of people who buy systems exactly for FIFA and Call of Duty only. One of my friends actually got a PS3 just for FIFA.
Especially in my area, when I used to work in games retail, people would come in and tell me how they only play FIFA or they only play Call of Duty and a lot of them would just buy Xbox 360s for those.
Some would buy PS3’s for them too (mostly for FIFA players).

Except Microsoft reversed the crap in the Xbox One and are coming out with Titan Fall and Halo 5. Those are system sellers, and right now, Xbox One is pretty neck-and-neck with PlayStation 4.
The Xbox One is still going to do well. It might not sell as much as the Xbox 360, but it will not fail. The hate on the internet is not representative of the entire consumer market. Don’t let it fool you. There are still millions loyal to the Xbox brand. Plus Microsoft has the marketing money. Never underestimate the marketing money. I’m getting an Xbox One (in addition to the PS4 I pre-ordered and the Wii U I already own). There are a few games I want to play exclusive to the system and since I also work with games, I like to own all systems.

I got an email from Moveon.org, which has nothing to do with video games. They usually send all this democratic political stuff like save the environment and stop the republicans. It actually was the first time ever I got a petition like this. It also seemed like didn’t get the message that some of these things are no longer a problem. Even my dad who is retired and has no interest in video games knew about it all the DRM troubles and internet connection. I think he read in Wall Street Journal.

I’m not so sure I’ll have much left over to get anything for it this year since I’m getting a PS4 and maybe an Xbox One (pre-ordered both already), but next year I have a good number of titles that I’m looking forward to.
Whether I get them at launch or not, I’m looking forward to picking up Pikmin, Tropical Freeze, Sonic Lost World, Super Mario 3D World, Scribblenauts Unmasked, Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros.

Most multiplatforms will be on PS4 unless the Wii U version has some crazy good exclusive features.

One month…One month until Wii U ‘s first heavy hitter debuts in the States. One month until there could be a status change in sales on Wii U. Can Pikmin 3 do it? Can it show a change in status in increases in sales like 30%? I know one thing, once Pikmin 3 comes out, I WILL NOT BE ON HERE AS OFTEN. In fact that’s just the begining, 101, Rayman Legends will probably keep me away from here until gas prices reaches $6 a gallon. Also remember how I was bitching about lack of online for 3D Mario. I failed to remember that even though Brawl had online, I only used it about 4 times. Why? Because it sucked. It sucked big time. Watching Tre’s video helped me realize something. If it was possible that they tested it, which make sense, it could have sucked. I failed to realize that Nintendo has Dream Team and 3D Mario World releasing this year. One has four player while the other has an all new experience of how Mario and Luigi team up which looks like one sleeps in order to kick Bowser’s ass. What Nintendo needs is to annouce the next date and time of another Direct and what upcoming games will they show that we never seen and heard of yet. Another thing, There is still a lot of GamePad pontential not quite unveiled yet. I remember someone saying Nintendo doesn’t know what to do with the GamePad. Will that’s not true. Remember at 2012 E3, one image from the GamePad could leave the gamepad and appear on the TV as if it was real time? Remember a girl was holding a Wiimote in her hand and had the GamePad on the floor. The GamePad displayed a golf ball. The girl swung the Wiimote. The ball left the Gamepad and appeared on the television. A dart appearing on the GampePad, someone touches the gamepad and it leaves and chops down trees on the TV. last year at E3, hidden treaser could only be found the GamePad. Also, on one game shown on the Gamepad, someone was holding it and moved the controller to the far right, it showed images that couldn’t be shown on TV. OH NINTENDO KNOWS WHAT TO DO WITH THE GAMEPAD!!!! Why aren’t we experiencing this yet? Will it goes back to that article about holding back certain games at this year’s E3, don’t wan’t competition to have plenty of time to copy. When a company is silent, competitiors worry. How can you tell if a rival is worried? Pay journlist to bash the company that is the most quiet.
Nice to see you back with us, and I agree. The game pad has huge potential and I think they will start to act on it.(hopefully) It only starts to get better with Pikmin 3.

He has a point. At the moment I do not want a Wii U, but than again, all of the next gen consoles aren’t that great. I’m debating between PS4 and Xbox One, both have strengths and weaknesses that I am considering. Whereas with Wii U I just haven’t started considering getting it. Its missing a game that makes me WANT to own it. With Xbox I get Halo, but its more expensive and requires kinect. With Sony I get all the 3rd party games I could get on xbox for a cheaper price with no restrictions, but no exclusives that interest me, with Wii U,its lacking many features and I get just the few games that Nintendo has out, none of which are exciting to me. So really, none of these consoles are very exciting to me yet.
Since I am no longer a console wars fanboy I will buy all 3 eventually if they present me with exciting games, but for now I’m sticking with 360, ps3, and my 3DS as my main consoles.

Without third party support Nintendo will sell less, but there are still plenty of reasons to play Wii U.

Wake up. Technology is what offers new experiences and ways to play. Nintendo themselves adopted this approach prior to the Wii. It was more powerful technology that allowed them to create such gems as Ocarina of time. The fact that you now dismiss more powerful technology, as unnecessary, is wildly hypocritical. If it was Nintendo with the more powerful tech, I guarantee fanboys like you would be praising it to the heavens. Bloody hypocrites, the lot of you.
Technology is indeed what offers new experiences and ways to play, but that doesn’t automatically mean the most powerful hardware delivers that. May I draw your attention to both the Wii and the original DS. Not the most powerful hardware-wise, but offered new experiences with their own technologies, experiences that everyone enjoyed, so much so that in the Wii’s case, Sony tried to implement their own thing, whereas Microsoft went a slightly different route. It brought about a new breed of gamers, and that’s what’s great for the industry, especially one that doesn’t want to admit to change, and is so fragile it could crash at any given time.
If the Wii U had PC-architecture ala the PS4 and XO, yes we would be praising it, but we’d be praising it because it’s a Nintendo console, and we can play our favourite Nintendo games on it. However, the fact the Wii U has native backwards compatibility, something the other two clearly lack, is a plus, and what’s that down to? Technology. Third-gen Gecko Processor has its merits.
The Wii U is fine with the power it has. You’ll see a sharper increase in quality when the powerhouses are released anyway. Nintendo was first out of the gate console-wise with GPGPU’s. None of the 7th gen systems have one. Both the PS4 and XO will, so by then developers would have the tools they need. It just means they have to learn to optimise their code and stop being lazy, which to be honest, is the fallacy of the industry. If you want raw power, get a PC. If you want the console experience, take your pick.

Is the gamepad next gen? Consumers, gamers, developers and the media clearly don’t think so.
The GamePad is more of an effort than what the others are offering, plus unlike its rivals, the integration is both seamless and its own standard. You have it right in front of you. You also don’t have to spend extra money on another device for the same effect because it comes in the box.

But basically the advanced technology allows developers to implement their ideas, which was previously impossible due to technological restrictions on current consoles, and create unique gaming experiences. In the same way the N64 allowed Nintendo new ways of designing their games. The SNES wasn’t powerful enough to allow them to create games like Ocarina. New technology isn’t simply about the graphics.

I love the ignorance of you children. You seem to be under the impression that more powerful technology is simply about the graphics. What you don’t understand is that current technology is restrictive. It doesn’t allow developers to realise their full vision of their ideas. With next gen consoles, the opportunities are endless. They can finally make the games they want, exactly how they want them. Which allows them to introduce entirely new gaming experiences. The XB1 and PS4 controllers have not been modified too much from their predecessors, because they have become the definitive controllers for comfort and control. That is why. To argue against such things is moronic and futile. You don’t criticise something for being ideal for the job it does.
Anyway, as I’ve said before. I will continue to support my WiiU until the end (which let’s be honest, isn’t far off). But trying to defend it in the face of the looming next generation is futile. WiiU WILL fail against these consoles. And the sooner you accept that, and stop stamping your feet like angry children, the better.
The Wii U is next-gen. And the Gamepad was designed to fit both to new, creative ideas using the second screen, and standard gameplay styles. It has ALL the standard Dualshock/XBox controller buttons.

Lest we forget the console has been out for nearly 8 months, and has more games on it than the other two unreleased systems at this moment in time, yep, certainly isn’t the time to be buying a Wii U is it? Games are games, they’re just not ones we can all agree on.
Why should we buy a Wii U? Because it has games we like playing, with more to come a stone’s throw away. If it didn’t have games we liked playing, we wouldn’t buy. It’s not strictly about third-party support, it just helps when you have their support.
Also, on that note, you know your desperate when your only argument underlines the sheer laziness of the industry full stop. Third-party devs are more excited about the PS4 and XO solely because of their PC-based architecture, cutting development time and expenses almost in half. If the industry demands so much power that it detracts from the overall experience of gaming, then count me out. I’ve got a PC for the power war, and I’m sure others have too.

There are plenty of gamers who love platformers, puzzle games, party games, and strategy games. The best of these are on Nintendo. Gamers who enjoy a good veriaty of games will want to choose between the playstation and xbox. Then also buy a wii u because the wii u is not as redundant as the playstation and xbox.

I bought it because it is the best controller in the market for me. It has all the buttons that you need and a touchscreen for added gameplay experience that differentiates it from Xbox and Playstation. Off tv play as well and I use the gamepad as an internet browser when my room tv is and my laptop is occupied. Great for local multiplayer that eliminates screen peeking and screen splitting in TVs. What more can you ask for other than more AAA and 3rd party mature games???
Yes the console is underpowered compared to PS4 and Xbox1 but it can do 1080p and 60fps. It has also double-triple the RAM dedicated to processing games compared to last gen consoles. If we were ok already with 360 and ps3 graphics before and Nintendo gave it more power, it should be enough in my opinion to handle better looking games. Also I agree since day one that adding more power to the console is not just about graphics but taking off restrictions for game developers which also leads to unique gameplay ideas.
