Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has discussed the issue surrounding the lack of third-party developers creating titles for Wii U. Iwata admits that a number of big third-party developers have said that they won’t release their games on Wii U, but says this is down to individual developers, rather than a universal trend. Iwata then went on to say that a lot of third-party games that appeared on Wii U at launch were ports of existing titles and says that they shouldn’t have expected what he calls brisk sales. Here’s what he said.
“The attitude of Japanese developers and overseas developers are a bit different, and for overseas developers, some certainly announced that they would not release their key titles for Wii U, but other big publishers have made all of their main titles available for the platform. In this sense, we can say that this is not a universal trend but each software developer has its own thoughts.”
“There were so many games released by third party publishers for Wii U during the launch period, but most of them were converted from other platforms and therefore could not enjoy brisk sales. As a result, some software developers have become pessimistic about Wii U. However, the time will come when some third-party games for Wii U and for other platforms are released at the same time this year. It is important to have given much momentum to Wii U around that period.”

Whatever, I find the idea that Nintendo must have games like Call of Duty or Battlefield baffling. People buy whatever console they choose for the unique exclusive experiences they bring. 3rd party games are just a bonus. If Playstation had no 3rd party games I’d still buy a PS3/PS4 just for their exclusives just as I bought a Wii and Wii U for its exclusives.

The was the least powerfully and sold the most of the last generation.
It was also the cheapest on the market, marketing and hype for the system started long before the system came out so that everyone and their mother (literally) knew about it.
In addition, it had motion controls that everyone from kids to old folks who never were interested in video games before were more attracted to for its ease of accessibility.
As great as some of the games were on the system, the reality is that the Wii was found most of its success from being a casual consumer fad.
The Wii U has none of those advantages. Maybe the cheaper price, but not even by that much.

Both the PS4 and One need price drops far worse than the Wii U does, and if Sony doesn’t release its grip on pay-wall-free multiplayer, the PS4 will end up becoming a single-player-only system for me.

Wii U is underpowered when compared to PS4 or Xbox1 but it has enough power to compete, the problem is Wii U sales dont exist. If Wii U had sold 6 to 10 million units you would see all those 3rd party games also coming to Wii U but unfortunately those sales arent there and I do see Nintendo having huge a struggle to keep the Wii U from fading, but it has nothing to do with system’s power.
I bet PS4 and xb1 will not sell as many in first 3 months, as Wii U did.
I’m a huge Nintendo fan, their my preferred company, and I own every Nintendo home console, but even I know the ps4 will probably outsell the Wii u in the first month, maybe even the first week, don’t know about the Xbox one though. But the Wii u launch was better than most give it credit for, it did out sell ps3 and Xbox 360’s first three months after launch, but people thought it was bad because everyone’s comparing it to the wii’s launch.
As much as I am holding my tongue, I agree. But hey, the Wii U will be picking up soon enough! Pikmin 3 anyone!?!?!
There are two reasons I can’t agree:
1) Unlike the Wii U, it’ll immediately have to compete with the Xbox One.
2) Most of its launch titles (and announced titles in general) are cross-generation, and its biggest E3 games (KH3 and FF XV) are both multi-platform and won’t even be out for a long time.
Furthermore, the Wii U is going to have a huge sales increase. It’ll have Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong, three of the biggest names in gaming, out in time for the holiday season (furthermore, Mario appears to be the only one that won’t be out for Black Friday).
I’m not being a fanboy, I’m just stating evidence here.
4+ Millions (I assume more by the time fall roles around), in the first week or even in the first month. Haha, unless its (PS4) a phone or something everyone needs and since its $400, so no. It will sell 1-3 million units worldwide by the end of December and continue to have some healthy sales after that but much slower sales after that. When it comes down in price expect the real sales to happen, same applies for the Wii U.

I honestly think that we have yet to see what Nintendo is capable of bringing us in HD! Seriously, Nintendo have always been a company of vision, inspiration, and originality! I don’t get that feeling when playing any other system, it just seems like their games came out of a cookie cutter! Galaxy is a great example of what you can get out of old tech…competing with HD systems and winning! Pikmin 3’s graphics are phenomenal for their first foray into the HD realm (not counting Nintendoland or NSMBU here)! It just seems to me that the other companies, instead of maxing out their hardware, they play it safe and just “leap frog” ahead of the competition with “MORE POWER…MORE RAM…MORE SPEED…CRYUNREALFROST5”, leaving behind their old system like an abandoned child!
You have to be a true fan of Nintendo in order to understand what I’m feeling and saying without taking offense! I can’t wait to see what’s around the corner, but like always, it will most likely blow our minds…and be imitated by others! :P

Taking Mario Kart and Smash Bros as examples… Nintendo is just so good, they nailed the gameplay early on for those series and ya don’t fix what ain’t broke, son.
And yet, Nintendo’s greatest strength and flaw is they like to.mix up their IPs to keep from stagnenting.
You know how this gen dragged on due to a lack of new IPs gameplay on all platforms? That’s going to happen even sooner next gen on X1 and PS4. Truthfully, guys, the problem really lies with gross generalization. Whenever you hear the phrase ‘Lack of Third Party support,’ everyone presumes it means ALL Third Parties aren’t supporting a said console.
What Iwata is indicating is NOT every Third Party developer is snubbing the Wii U, only certain individual parties coming up with every technological reason for not developing for the system. Rather peculiar, since most people don’t aways talk about a game’s tech when discussing a Third Party title.
And to correct some, the Dreamcast did NOT fail due to lack of Third Party support. In fact, when it came out on launch it had a plethora of Third Party titles, what killed it was due to lack from Sega themselves when the system failed reaching the projected sales. That and the VMU debacle.
Dreamcast was awesome dude. Even when Sega wasnt doing good they put lots of new titles on that thing like Skies of arcadia and shit man, you know what i am sayin? Someone bitched about Mario Kart 8 being rehased. Ignoring the new Need For Speed not coming to Wii U. So because EA is not Nintendo, they can come up with the same rehashed shit and that’s ok. Yet Mario Kart, the first racing game on earth where you drive upside down, cheat and hit people with shells that’s not ok. Yet if Crash Bandicoop made another rehashed Mario Kart wannabe racing game where you can drive upside down that’s ok. Price cut because they are not selling and it is overpriced. Never said the Gamepad is not innovative, just said there are no games that leverage it’s innovation. Also, I have not heard of any new IP, no games.

Mr. Iwata said what I’ve been saying for months. I’m glad he’s “fighting back”. It is sheer dishonesty or vanity for companies like EA to think their old ports, most of them poorly supported with the exception of Need for Speed, would give them big sales! Notice that the PS4/Xbox 1 are being FULLY supported at launch. If Wii U received this type of unbiased support at launch, it would have sold more units. I really think Nintendo felt that they would receive more support from 3rd parties with the Wii U, thus giving them an opportunity to get a firm understanding about HD development. This is why I believe Nintendo didn’t have more of their sure fire titles ready at launch. Anyhow, now that Nintendo is becoming accustom to HD development, I’m really excited. Why? Because with many 3rd parties withholding titles for the Wii U, I think Nintendo is going into game development overdrive. I feel that Nintendo will not only create new titles, but reintroduce dormant franchises. The way I see it, Mr. Iwata is upset, and rightfully so. I believe he is dead set on proving not only the value of the Wii U, but to make it a sales success. One thing is certain, I don’t think Nintendo will ever launch a new console, and give 3rd parties an opportunity to make money. From here on out, Nintendo will launch some must have titles which is good. You know what’s funny? 3rd parties had an opportunity to make money with the 3DS launch and Wii U launch. There were no significant Nintendo titles available that would have taken money from them. For example, look at the drought that Wii U had from January to the middle of March. EA could’ve released some of their titles like Dead Space 3 and Crysis 3. Both would’ve sold well. Regardless of how small the Wii U install base is, in my mind, almost 4 million people with no games to play is an opportunity to make some money. With EA and other 3rd parties losing money, that is a question that their investors SHOULD BE asking!

Back in the days of the NES, I was much more into third-party titles than I am now. Nowadays, I seem to only care about Nintendo’s first-party titles. Except I still like Mega Man, and Resident Evil 4 was awesome. But I can’t think of any other third-party titles I like. There MIGHT be others.
