EarthBound Lands On Wii U Virtual Console Today

It’s been a long time coming, and Nintendo of America’s tease back in April probably didn’t help control your excitement, but today EarthBound is due to finally land on the Wii U Virtual Console. Spotted by a NeoGAF user on Nintendo’s website, EarthBound comes with a $9.99 price tag but it is yet to go live on the Wii U. According to a NeoGAF post, EarthBound is set to release 4pm PST today, and no doubt we’ll receive confirmation of this through this week’s download selection for North America.

Update: Europeans can also get their hands on EarthBound. You’ll find it on the Wii U eShop at 5pm BST. North American Wii U owners can download the title now.

    1. Why is it called “Mother” in Japan? Does it involve a Mother, is someone’s Mother the bad guy. Do you have to rescue your Mother? Is the name of the planet “Mother?” I don’t get it.

        1. Actually I think it might just be a John Lennon song. Although it was called Mother not only because of the song but because the creator(Shigaesato Itoi) didn’t wan’t it to sound like a game.

      1. EARTHBOUND IS OUT!!!!!!!

It was named Mother because the creator loved the Jon Lennon song so much he cried, he said it was the most beautiful thing he has ever heard.

      2. Mother was a John Lennon song, and Shigesato Itoi LOVED John Lennon. He picked ‘Mother’ as the name because it was a name that didn’t fit any game at the time.

  1. So…where is the Nintendo Direct regarding this and other news? Will it have a “ninja” release, too?

      1. Seems like a bad idea to me, not putting SNES games on the eShop. I hope when they finish releasing NES games on the thing they start on SNES later and Earthbound/Mother and Mario Kart SNES are 2 of the first games to be released.

      1. It’s not just the story. It’s the whole atmosphere of the game and and what it represents.
It represents a game that decided to go against the norm and showed that graphics aren’t the most important aspect of a game.

        1. It’s not really meant for us mere humans to put into our crude and comparatively unpoetic language. You have to open your heart and believe.

      2. For Snes I’d say its pretty special. Graphics don’t really matter as long as Gameplay is spectacular which this Game definitely gives. It’s story is also amazing which already supports this classic RPG. Definitely one of Nintendos greatest IMO.

    1. Europe is getting it as well i when to the e-shop there is a mini ND and EarthBound will be released in about half an hour

  2. EARTHBOUND IS OUT!!!!!!!

It’s very smart they are doing this. Now EarthhBound fans will start buying a Wii U. I already own one, but this will atleast gain the sales a bit. :D

  4. I’m most definitely thrilled about this. But one virtual console title doesn’t yet justify the purchase of a Wii U, at least not for me.
I’m still waiting on X and Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. Then I’ll get the system and immediately get Earthbound.

  6. I’ll give the game a shot. for its fucking price and the praise from you motherfuckers, I better enjoy it.

  7. look up mother origins, creepy explanation for why it’s called mother. it might not be true but it’s interesting

  8. Oh MAN! I hope this game is still available by the time I finally get myself a Wii U. I can’t wait to find out how many people downloads this game. I always thought that when it becomes available, Nintendo will be surprised by just how many people downloads it. And maybe it’ll give them that kick in the butt that they sorely need to bring a sequel to North America.

  9. I wonder what copyrighted material they censored, like the Salidar Dali clock and the Johnny Be Good-esque Hippy Theme?

yeah but back then a lot of stuff flew under the radar. the game actually has a lot of iffy and even scary stuff in it, so a t rating wasn’t really that surprising to me. however, it just seems a bit weird, giving something so adorable a T.
