Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 225,000 units of hardware in June and finished as the best-selling video game system in the U.S. for the second consecutive month. A strong launch for Animal Crossing: New Leaf and the continued strength of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon helped sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware and software increase by more than 40 percent and nearly 105 percent, respectively, over the same time last year.

Highlights for the month include:

  • Through the first six months of 2013, Nintendo has sold nearly 3.6 million combined physical and digital units of first-party Nintendo 3DS software, an increase of more than 85 percent over the same time frame last year.
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold more than 505,000 combined physical and digital units in June. More than 20 percent of these sales were through the Nintendo eShop, the second-highest ratio behind only Fire Emblem Awakening. Nintendo’s internal trackers show that sales of the game continue to be strong in July as well, indicating that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is poised to be one of the biggest games of the summer.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D sold more than 108,000 combined units in its second month and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon added nearly 115,000 combined units in its fourth month on the market, bringing its lifetime total to more than 750,000 combined units.
  • Nintendo had three of the top five best-selling software SKUs for the month.

Nintendo 3DS will build on its momentum with the successive launches of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team (Aug. 11), Pokémon X and Pokémon Y (Oct. 12), Mario Party for Nintendo 3DS (name not final; November) and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (November).

Starting in August and continuing through the end of the year, Wii U will launch a series of great games, including Pikmin 3 (Aug. 4), The Wonderful 101 (Sept. 15), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (October), Wii Party U (October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (November), Super Mario 3D World (December) and Wii Fit U (December).

      1. I’m getting really tired of all this bullshit on every comments in every single article. One idiot says “first” and you dumbasses gravitate to it like a fat kid to candy, with retarded replies that make me want to shoot myself in the goddamn face – and it’s not just one or two, it’s a fuck ton of replies. Retarded replies at that. You people made the comments section disgusting, retarded, pointless, it just went down the shitter. I can’t help myself but vomit whenever I scroll down and see this bullshit.

    1. True, they are releasing hit games very frequently, and that is why the 3DS is selling like hotcakes all around the world.

            1. The GameCube is my favorite console ever!!! I’m somewhat biased towards it :P Speaking of GameCube they NEED GameCube games on the virtual console :0

              1. Excuse me for my ignorance (GameCube is my fav console too, had amazing unique games), but what character is that in your pic? Don’t remember seeing it.

                  1. Hope you enjoy kill-every-game-on-the-series-sucked-zone: shadowshit: lets try to be a halo killer again edition.

  1. Nintendo 3DS is going to end up having one of the most outstanding game libraries ever delivered.

Nintendo is doing very well in handhelds, but is suffering a lot when it comes to home consoles. I really don’t get the picture…

      1. Indeed. But I mean that seems Nintendo is doing so recklessly about Wii U when you compare to what they are doing to 3DS.

One could dare to say that we are not talking about the same company.

        1. True, but the 3DS was pretty much in the same position. It had a terrible launch, but look now it’s it’s doing so well (obviously).

Hopefully this is just a Déjà vu moment for Wii U. Right now it’s on life support, but you’ve seen all of the great games that’s coming to Wii U. Pikmin 3 is a great sign. Now we know that the Wii U’s pricing or the name isn’t the problem. seeing how great Pikmin 3 is selling in Japan is a great sign. Keep in mind that Pikmin 3 doesn’t have a fanbase not nearly as big as Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros. etc. so the console has a potentially great future in store. Time can only tell.

          1. 3DS has suffered a lot, indeed. And now it is alive and well, as everyone can see!

The hardware sales spike due to Pikmin 3 release in Japan was fantastic. I hope it can be welcome here in the west as well as it was in Japan.

That being said, I’m sure this final quarter of 2013 will be decisive to Wii U. As you said, time will tell.

    1. In a way Nintendo is their own enemy. If they didn’t do handhelds, all the time and focus used on 3DS games would go to Wii U games. So basically Nintendo is competing with itself.

      1. Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon is an example of what you’re talking about. It should have been released for Wii U, and not for 3DS. Or – even better – for both. OK, I’m aware that it should take longer to port the game and scale the graphics to HD, but why can’t they predict the possibility of releasing it on their upcoming home console back in 2010 or 2011, when Next Level Games started to work on that? Sometimes I think they are not planning their strategy very well.

      2. Ways to fix Nintendo and their franchises:

        – Fire Iwata, Aonuma
        – Put Miyamoto in the elderly retreat, stop him from fucking up games again

        1. Iwata is an idiot trying to suck casual dicks for their money. He ruined the company. You could say he “saved it becase wii solds lots” but it was most casual crap money. Us, core Nintendo fans, got tossed away for the casual, wii sports loving faggots, and shitty graphics. Now the WiiU can’t even hold a candle to the PS4 and the XBONE, and yet again we won’t get any fucking exclusives. Even worse, he sent the WiiU all by itself, thinking Nintendland would attract the casuals like Wii Sports did, with no games at all, only now it’ll get a game, and that’s Pikmin 3.

        2. Aonuma is ruining the Zelda series. He’s an idiot. I’ll just link you this, judge it by yourself: http://s11.postimg.org/p6ntyp2ab/Aonuma_hates_zelda.jpg

        3. Miyamoto already ruined Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and now he ruined Zelda on the 3DS: He wanted to make an ALttP remake, but since “fans wouldn’t like another remake” he told that faggot Aonuma to just change some things in the game and call it a sequel, trying to pass it as an “all new game”. It just sucks. I gonna buy it used, they don’t even deserve my money for this lazy ass shit. Ocarina of Time 3D looked amazing, I expected something at that level of awesomeness on the real Zelda installment for the 3DS, instead we got this lazy ass shit. Also the last “IP” he created was fucking Wii Music for fuck’s sake, and before that it was Wii Fit. He’s a legend, but he’s just an old fart right now.

    1. Shantae, the original hard to find Gameboy advance Shantae has released on the 3DS e-shop today. IGN to my surprise run a beautiful article bundling it with the also wonderful release of earthbound today. Gamers in the Europe, pal regions and the Americas, buy these true treasures now :). They are cheap and you are supporting great developers like Way Forward, and nintendo’s Iwata game making days.

  2. 3DS will eventually surpass the DS as the best selling video game system of all time. Nintendo will never run out of money with the 3DS absolutely raping the gaming industry lol.

      1. I know it’s very close to the PS2 isn’t it? Some times the PS2 gets ahead, some times the DS gets ahead, etc. They’re even, aren’t they? You might be right though, I think the PS2 is a few consoles ahead.

  3. Nintendo has 1 of the top 5 skus.

If you count black ops 2 and nba as nintendo skus then sony and microsoft also had 3 in the top 5. And seeing as both games sold bad on the wii u piggy backing off the other platforms is just lol

  4. 3DS dominates the whole gamin market. It has lots of support on it. ITS BEAST. If you are gamer and dont own 3DS then WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU! There is something magical on that little beast. Its best thing for gamin, no other system can stand a chance against it.

  5. 1) NINTENDO DOMINATION UNIVERSE KING 3DS
    2) PIKMIN 3 WiiU 102 000 units sold in
days. 53% games sold of a Famitsu 37/40 93% rated games moving more than half its shelf merchandise. In Japan. Catalyzing the WiiU and showing Ubisoft, naughty dog and Capcom alike, it takes you guys hundreds of programmers and developers to try and match what one Shigeru Miyamoto Can envision in a simple but complicatedly marvelous SRPG :).

    1. Honestly, we should wait for next week’s sales figures. It might drop in again. 100k is a good start, but it’s not that good just yet, but it’s a start. Honestly 190k for a first shipment is disappointing, showing Nintendo didnt have much faith on Pikmin 3.

  6. The 3DS is just completely destroying the PS Vita. Once Pokemon X and Y come out, it’s all over..

        1. Masuda took the question wrong, did you see his reply? When somebody asked about “Pokemon on VIRTUAL CONSOLE” He said “No uhh, we want pokemon to be portable, so no console version of the old games”.

  7. Some where in sonyville and microsofthater Ville their executives are miserable and envious. Their system does not move systems on first party master pieces. Congratulations to Sony for the last of us though the did well :). Now if Microsoft studios could give us Alan wake, that would be awesome :).

    1. DS has sold 10 million more consoles than the PS2, so indeed it is the best selling console of all time :).

        1. He’s actually not wrong, DS is the best selling. Wikipedia barely ever gets updated. Even if Ps2 was the best selling, DS will eventually pass it (already has) because Ps2 is discontinued.

    2. The 3DS is about or above 40 million Consoles sold. Without even unleashing a main Pokemon game on the 3DS it is Dominating everything and everywhere. Ah! fire emblem awakening am playing through again and it’s a different game :).

      1. So according to this…

        http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/

        Your wrong.

        According to this…

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps2

        Your wrong…

        PS2 is 157 million
DS (Including all redesigns) is 154 million…

This does not including the latest sales figures for the PS2. It has not been updated in over a year, which you could safely assume a few more million consoles were sold.

To think DS is the number one selling system, no the DS, DS Lite, DSi, combined are the number one selling systems equals out to about your a dumbass. Its fine to prefer Nintendo, to be a fanboy, but seriously, you don’t have to lie, when the proof is all over the internet.

        Go do some research.

        1. Sorry man, but VGChartz and Wikipedia aren’t the kind of sources you should be linking. They’re made up. VGChartz already admited in the past they make shit up. Wikipedia any asshole can go and edit.

Never, ever, link those sites if you want to look credible. Find other sources.

  8. I can’t wait for Pokemon Y, LOZ Link between Worlds, LOZ Windwaker HD, Super Mario 3d World. I really wish Mario Kart 8 was coming this Christmas with perfect online multiplayer. But it will arrive sooner or later, I hope not too late.

  10. While I have been patiently waiting for the Wii Fit U, I started playing a couple of others on my WiiU, it is totally awsome. Looking forward to Pikmin 3, and then Rayman. Nintendo, my grandson and I love the WiiU.
