Here’s Some Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Information

Director of product marketing Bill Trinen recently sat down with online gaming publication IGN to discuss The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on the Nintendo 3DS. You can watch the Bill Trinen interview with direct feed video, right here. Here’s some of the main points that Trinen puts across in the interview.

  • The overworld is not identical to LttP’s.
  • Bill acknowledges that hieroglyphic Link looks like the Link from the Wind Waker Opening.
  • Runs at a “buttery smooth” 60 FPS.
  • Link can merge into pretty much any wall.
  • The dungeon we keep seeing is a new version of the Tower of Hera from LttP.
  • The gage on the left side gets rid of the need to restock items like arrows.
  • The wall Link ability runs on that gage and will pop you out of the wall when it runs out.

              1. Uhh howdy! Benny is your friend. You shouldn’t hate your friends. My Benny is just being as nice as he can be but you people still have to be rude to him and it’s disgraceful.

            1. Uhh howdy! God gave my son the gift of life because he loves him. I also had something to do with making my little Benny. Though as of right now we don’t know who his father is, I’m hoping to find out someday because I love him. Please be nice to my son. I wouldn’t treat you or your children with disrespect.

      1. The painting ability is adding new mechanics to the game. It makes the game feel “new.” Also, the top down view is a throwback to the original Zelda games so it by no means looks/feels “silly.” 💋

        1. Uhh hello! thank u mammajynx i am always lookin forward 2 new meckanicks in games so that cool! and i supose the retro look is nise. i gues i wil just have 2 play this zelda game b4 jugding it ! I wil help zelda save the princes from the eval gannondorf! :D

            1. Uhh howdy! I don’t quite understand what you mean by contacting “the real” Sanders family. I’m Ben’s mother and I try my best to monitor his online activity but I’d appreciate it if you didn’t accuse my son of impersonating himself. My son is just giving his 2 cents about his thoughts on the article, no need for the bullying.

            1. who want free pizza

he’s pretending to be somebody who has down syndrome for a quick laugh…….. AND ITS NOT FUNNY. MAKING FUN OF THOSE PEOPLE IS NEVER FUNNY!!!! >:(

            2. Uhh howdy! My Benny is working harder on his english. He has an english tutor 5 times a week for 2 hours each day. He’s been making a lot of progress.

              1. ultramarioover90000000000000!!!!!!

this is not the place for good faith. i wouldn’t let your son go on a site like this. he will be made fun of.

          1. You know what, i will contact the real Ben sanders family and tell them what you are doing, lets see how funny you are after that!

      2. first of all, the dudes name is Link, second of all, graphics aren’t the game, and third, ur a tool

        1. Uhh howdy! ShinobiGaiden watch your mouth you sick son of a bitch. How dare you insult my son for just giving his thoughts on the news. If you have nothing nice to say then don’t say anything at all.

  1. Now if they made a “Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion” equivalent for the 3DS then I will be exalted and not just happy…

  2. With those shitty graphics it’s no wonder it runs in 60fps… Did they even need to state that? Ocarina of Time 3D looks amazingly beautiful, I don’t know why did they had to make such garbage on the 3DS, the console deserved way more than that.

      1. It’s a VIDEOgame. Graphics make the experience as well, I won’t feel pleased by playing something I find ugly.

When I say graphics I’m not saying specs.

    1. So only 3D games can look good?…

alttp was one of the best games for the SNES and this sequel will become one of the best for the 3DS so you can take your pathetic Sonyan logic and go back to your gameless PS Vita…

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I don’t care if Zelda has a high standard, you can’t say this game will be one of the best for the 3DS when it hasn’t released yet and very little information is available on it.

And why do you end every paragraph with an ellipsis? Seriously.

        1. It has a 92% probability that it will become successful within its own ranks aswell as the 3DS itself…

          1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Did you know that 78% of probabilities said in comment sections are made up on the spot? Neither did I!!!! :D

And there you go with the ellipsis. It doesn’t make you look wise or your statements any truer. It doesn’t supplement your comments in any positive way.

      2. This game is actually 3D as well. If it was 2D with some good sprite work, I wouldn’t be complaining.

The problem is that they tried to recreate the 2D art direction that was made for ALttP, and translate it into 3D, but that game was made with the SNES and 2D spritework in mind. Results: Everything looks fake and plastic, it looks terrible.

Besides, it’s a remake being passed as a new game… The 3DS is an amazing portable console. It has the power, the install base, everything. SO WHY DID THEY DO THAT? Why just make another remake, then think “oh no, it’s too bad, they don’t want another remake!” and just change some things here and there to try and pass it as a new game? Doesn’t it make you even slightly mad? They’re trying to appeal to nostalgia here to justify their lazyness on making a good Zelda game on the amazing 3DS.

        1. Appealing to Nostalgia is the main purpose with this game which they said it themselves so there is no reason to call them lazy or otherwise…

          1. Give me a source where they said that.

Miyamoto said it himself: they were doing an ALttP remake, but then they realized everyone was tired of remakes and wanted a new game. So what they did: changed a few bits of the game and slapped it as a sequel to pass it as an “all new” game.

            1. I thought Miyamoto had said he was doing either majora’s mask remake or alttp sequel. Even though it is in the same world, it should be a different adventure and story.

      1. I admit, I’m saying they’re shitty because I’m pissed at their lazyness. But “ok” graphics on a series that has a high standard of looking simply amazing in each installment, on a portable console that is somewhat of a powershouse and it shows on games like RE:Revelations…

Just why? Besides the game being a complete rehash of A Link to The Past. I just wanted a new Zelda game, with an unique graphical style, story and complete new world to explore, I don’t want to just go to that same world of ALttP which is already imprinted in my brain from so many times I played the damn game before.

Also I didn’t want to wait 2 more years for an “ALL NEW” zelda game on the WiiU… Which will be amazing, of course, but the fact they’re just releasing a minor game on the 3DS just to “hold us of” until the WiiU game hits in, is depressing as fuck. I simply love my 3DS, I thought 3DS Zelda was going to be THE shit.

        1. “But “ok” graphics on a series that has a high standard of looking simply amazing in each installment, on a portable console that is somewhat of a powershouse and it shows on games like RE:Revelations…”

You ever think that maybe that was the DESIGN choice of the game. It’s a reboot of the old Zelda, not its own thing. It’s like if they made a completely different zelda game from this and called it a reboot from A Link to the Past, that obviously would not work. They went their own way like they usually do with the 3ds and look at we’re its gotten them. Stop complaining about not wanting the new Zelda out, I’d rather have a finished product then a half assed one, and last time I check the next Zelda game was at a point in completion that it almost got featured at E3 but obviously needed some work done. Be patient. Usually things that take time to get finished(Pikmin 3) do really good and I expect no different from the new Zelda.

        2. ^^ Agree – this, if anything, should have been an eshop release only at $19.99, they should leverage grezzo’s engine for a proper new 3d zelda on the 3DS imo. And should boost the graphics too, zelda has high standards in the eyes of gamers

  3. Hmmm… I kind of like gathering items like arrows and stuff. Wonder why they have a gage? I think that makes games too easy. Hopefully I am proven wrong once this game comes out! 💋

    1. they’re probably just experimenting with the gameplay. they did say the Zelda formula was getting kinda boring, so it’s nice to see them playing around with new ideas.

      1. Yeah, I’m sure the Zelda team knows what they’re doing. I have yet to be disappointed by a Zelda game afterall!! :D 💋

    2. Cugno has three feet

I like the idea. Once you have 50 arrows in Zelda, you have 50 arrows, and that’s it, you can use them as fast as you want, but with this new method, you can’t just blindly shoot arrows hoping to hit an enemy. It adds some sort of planification for me, it’s a good thing.

    3. maybe it gets refilled with magic potions like in oot instead of refilling over time. if it doesn’t already, that would be cool

        1. Thanks for showing this-
And yeah, this looks waaay better (graphically) than some of you are giving it credit for -___-…

    4. Yeah :/ im not a big fan of the gage thingy. Though it might encourage me to use certain items more often :)

  4. I don’t have to collect of bunch of shit and restock every time I face the same boss?
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES PLEEEEEEEEEEASE

    1. Restock?? are you telling me that you leave the dungeon to restock at the nearest store every time you fight a boss???

  5. I wasn’t that big of a fan of ALTTP, actually I’m not much of a fan of the top-down Zeldas to be honest. I’m more into the 3D ones, I’m not sure why. So can’t say I’m looking forward to this one, but I might still get it though eventually.

  6. overworld is not identical to lttp. that’s all I need to know. now I’m sure to get the game. I hope there are new items too.

    1. It is identical. It’s the same thing. Just look at the map down there. They just changed a bit of the layout here and there, but it’s the same overworld – every location is still in the same place, etc.

    1. Also it’s kind of a bummer that there won’t be any feeling of satisfaction of finally beating that minigame and getting an ammo expansion.

      1. Yeaah, thats kind of a bummer, but really, do we need 100 arrow quivers?
I think that’s the question they asked themselves, do we need limited items like arrows and bombs? Which honestly we don’t, we need access to items for puzzles all the time. The only time limited arrows or bombs would be handy is if the game had enemies that had more of a risk reward system where you could kill them easily with one arrow, but still, you normally have so many arrows, does it matter?

        1. The cave of ordeals from Twilight princess is one that uses quite a bit of arrows, bombs, etc.. I kind of like limited ammo, but I don’t think I’ll mind this much.

          1. Eh, i didn’t really use that much. Honestly, i got through it using only 2 potions. The arrows were just useful for one hit kills from the ledge, but most of the time you can just sword and ball and chain it

      2. This too^ I wonder what they will give us so that it feels like we gained something valuable. Heart Containers are good and all, but that can’t be the ONLY thing we can actually stock up
        on? 💋

  7. The sort of “item energy bar” is something i like.
You either never run out of items in Zelda, and when you do it’s just annoying, going back to previous rooms to break pots and farm resources, so having it linked to a sort of “stamina” system is more intereting, makes you more cautious and pay more attention than firing off arrows at random.

  9. I want to gather arrows….. I don’t want to use up magic power to use them…. If the meter refills in seconds, what is the point of even having one then…… It’s like they’re trying to be like The Legend of Zelda, where it cost money to fire an arrow. I’m really freaking sick of all this retro crap….. make some new ideas, take advantage of the hardware, and your customers will be happy. Don’t keep recycling ideas that were used 20 years ago (or 1 year ago (i’m looking at you super Mario 3D World), make some new ones……. Jeez

    1. i’m pretty sure, this is the first time that they used this mechanic, also the first one they use the wall thing, and the hardware thing here is the 3D, they haven’t said how they will use the 3D effect, so, you are complaining beforehand

  10. Zelda fans this is but the first of Zelda titles on the 3DS. 3D Zelda lovers another 3DS Zelda is in the works for the next two years. Enjoy a brilliant creation at a buttery 60 frames per secon. Now let’s debate constructively.

  11. I’m glad you don’t have to restock on arrows and things. I would only use bombs and arrows when I absolutely needed to, in fear of not having any when they are needed.

  12. IGN is reporting that Nintendo brought their big guns for Comicon. They have realised Nintendo is fighting back and demolishing the feeble haters.

  13. You dont have to restock arrows and bombs…? Wow… I’m getting sick of the lack of item management in games now. Now we can just spam bomb everything without even thinking

Way to eliminate the need for thinking in Zelda games

    1. … I don’t think they’d put a game-breaking mechanic in this Zelda with zero forethought…
      Sometimes change is good.

      1. I exaggerated a bit. Of course the need to think isn’t gone. Just going through dungeons requires thinking in and of itself, but I’ve always personally felt like item management was a big part of Zelda games because you had to choose how you would proceed wisely or else be forced to go out of your way stocking up. Sometimes alls you would need to do is smash a pot for a few more arrows but it forces you offcourse for a few moments and that’s enough

There is a cooldown on items so you can’t just spam them, but theres no real threat of having to go off course now. That tiny strategical element combined with the fact that we won’t have nearly as much variety in monster drops now is simply disappointing to me.

And to top it off the hearts aren’t at the top left corner of the screen anymore.. very annoying. Not necessarily bad but unnecessary all the same

    2. Didn’t think that through, didja?
You’ve now got to manage your stamina gauge so that you don’t run out of it for other critical abilities.
Spamming arrows will just leave you bottomed out before the enemy is dead, and then you may need to wait longer for the gauge to start recovering.

  14. Nintendo will be bringing out so many great games all within the same time period that it’s going to be overwhelming. Month after month of great, must have games. All of the haters are going to feel like complete fools. Though they’ll still hide it and continue pretending that they hate.

    1. It would be nicer if mods would do something, but they dont which is lame and one of the reasons why this site has kind of an “joke” status. People come here to laugh for stupid people. But this game looks awesome! Cant wait to play it!

  16. I’m gonna be honest here, I’m excited for the game but I did expect a full 3D view game, not this. Too many rehashes, remakes and old style games have been coming out lately. If I wanna play an old game I’ll just play an old game. Then again, it’s Zelda and Nintendo we’re talking about. The game probably wont end up sucking. Still yes, making a game like this is a lot easier. That’s why it feels a little lazy to some people.

    1. ^^ Agree fully. It will be good but feels slightly on the lazy side.. it’s as if nintendo just didnt have enough resources to make brand new games at a fast enough pace

  17. Why don’t people just simmer down and wait until the game is actually released before bitching about it. :0
