Sakurai Says Super Smash Bros. Won’t Contain Story Mode Or Cutscenes

super smash brosDuring this year’s E3 Masahiro Sakurai said that the story mode found in the next Super Smash wouldn’t be the Subspace Emissary  storyline found in Brawl, though there would be a single-player campaign. Now, in his bi-weekly column in Famitsu magazine, he’s thoroughly ruled out the inclusion of a story mode due to particular cutscenes being uploaded onto the internet. In his own words, he said:

“Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet. You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I’ve decided against having them.”

However, there’s always a silver lining to every project, so this time around Sakurai and his team have focussed on introductory sequences for the new characters – Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer and the Animal Crossing villager – and has also expressed such interest in creating videos for subsequent characters in the roster. Sakurai also mentioned that there would be an addition to the 3DS version that would “act as a separate mode from the standard versus play.” Let us know what your thoughts are on this issue; did you like Subspace Emissary in Brawl and are disappointed there won’t be another story-driven campaign, or do you prefer the exclusion of it?

Thanks to all those that sent this in.

        1. It looks like there won’t even be that, because even that in Melee had a couple cutscenes. It sounds kinda like Sakurai is now completely against single-player options with cutscenes.

          1. The validity of Sakurai’s statement is a bit sketchy. Yes, Nintendo has a thing against Let’s Plays, but then he’d have to remove the multiplayer aspect because, hey- people upload fights.

The real reason is most likely time constraints; they don’t want delays like what Brawl went through and what better way to cut down on time than to remove a story mode that would be time consuming? As for the uploaded on youtube bit- it was most likely a scapegoat to cover for their decision to be lazy.

      1. The man has a broken hand and he’s still trying to make this game possible for you without taking any breaks. Quit complaining.

      2. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

I remember it being cool to. Its a shame they will have to replace it. Maybe we will have adventure mode like in Melee! That will be so cool!

        1. Adventure Mode was fun until it became the same thing. Over. And over. and over. I want individual stories for each character. Mortal Kombat did it on a lesser system, why can’t Smash?

    1. If it means anything, this is actually a good thing. The cutscenes took up a ton of space in Brawl, and as a result Sakurai had to cut a few features (characters, stages, etc.), as well as merging break the targets into five generic levels instead of every character having their own. SSE also took up a lot of development time, so other features were cut, too. Without it, Sakurai can add a ton into the new games, but it gets better. Wii discs can hold up to 8 GB. Brawl took up roughly 7.5 (due to the cutscenes, once more). 3DS carts can hold up to 8 GB (newer models only, but that changes nothing). No cutscenes/SSE means more time and space to develop more characters, stages, and other features.

      1. You have a point there. No story mode and cutscenes means more characters, more stages and more features. I’m disappointed there won’t be any store mode or cutscenes myself. This could be seen in a good or bad way.

      2. I was somewhat disappointed much like the others here, but after reading you do have a very strong point, sir or madame. The possibilities are endless with so much space opened up and it makes me wonder how big this game is really going to be now. I still believe that maybe the game should be held off until at least 2015 before he feels rushed and it ends up like another Sonic ’06, time for him to reconsider certain decisions, and the like. I mean, the subspace emissary wasn’t exactly my favorite feature but it was still very creative way to pull in the fans. However, the main reason I didn’t love it as much as others is that I feel it was lacking, and SSB4 had a chance to fix that. Honestly, I don’t care too much now thinking of what characters, assists, stages, modes and the like will be implemented in this new game. Thanks for showing me the light in what felt like a dark tunnel for Nintendo.

        1. The problem here is that Nintendo has done EVERYTHING possible to make fans don’t trust them. They delayed 2 games, 3 including Pikmin, they said over and over again that they did not expect the developing time to increase that much so they don’t haave enough time or people to work in all the titles, cutscenes take a LOT of resources and work. Then they already said that there wont be necesarily the same roster as in Brawl and its likely to be smaller so, again, you need something more to fill the space with. This is when I wonder why the fuck didnt they use Blu Ray. There are more things but is now just too late for me to write them down but since this years E3, everything (almost) I hear about Nintendo makes me wonder and be worried about their future and how they understand the gaming and what they want to deliver and Im a big, big fan.

  1. I prefer the cutscenes. But I am not holding this against the game. Melee didnt have any and I like Melee a billion times better than Brawl.

  2. I’d really like to see mini games added to smash bros. Super smash kart mini game, with flying vehicles too.

  3. Subspace Emisary was kinda pain in the butt. And not because it was hard, but just annoying. I loved the cutscenes but I was not very fond of the game-mode itself. I hope they include a totally new one-player mode.

  4. This is ridiculous! They worked hard on these cutscenes and just because they were leaked you’re making the rest of the fans suffer?? Bull. SHIT.

    1. I have to agree with you on this unfortunately…

Has my Commander lived under a bridge these last 2 decades?…

Ofcourse people will upload all these things on the internet, and since probably 90% of those who saw these cutscenes at E3 are the ones that still watches them today so I don’t see how already seen cutscenes prevents him from making more cutscenes that would be in the final game?…

Somehow it feels as if both his injury and the 2 version games are stopping him a bit from doing everything he wants…

      1. Scratch that…

Just banish the one that leaked these secret videos if it turns out that one of your drones did it Sakurai Sir!

        1. He’s talking about the Subspace emissary cutscenes. Cutscenes like the reveal trailers for Megaman and Wii Fit trainer, are the kind of scenes he would like to get spread around the web, cause it benefits the game, while not spoiling the single player mode.

    2. guillermoleylamphar

I think that his statement also goes against ALL the vision about gaming at Nintendo.
Is like good stories, good stories aren’t good because of the surprises and twists, good stories are good becasue of the details that explains those surprises and twists. It’s not about the cutscene, is about how it connect with the game and the gameplay.
They can do better than this for sure.

  5. i liked the emissary, as i was forced to play as people i would’ve never actually played as in just a regular fighting mode. i thought the story was pretty awesome & the fact that they included multiple random character stories together(like Siamus & Pikachu). I would hope they do something similar to, but if it’s just a straight forward brawler/fighting game, i will still(most likely) pick up both Wii U & 3DS versions.

    1. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

me too & I always chose character who I am very worst at playing first to the characters I really good at like Pikachu. Yoshi, Zelda, & Pokemon Trainer.

  6. I have mixed feelings about it. I mean if he is going to make decisions based on what can be done on the internet then he might as well not release the game at all… there are people that still prefer to experience a game themselves, Youtube is not going to replace that feeling.

On the other hand while I was glad they bothered to add a single player adventure of some sort with the Subspace Emissary, I thought they could have done a better job with it as well. So it was either improve on it or not bother with it at all. And well, we know what they chose.

  7. Except you’re making a full price fighting game.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this Sakurai, but there’s something people like called value.

From my own, and many others perspective, it won’t matter much, but a lot of people actually LIKE story modes, and maybe want story mode to play through as characters all the way through, get a taste for each one, or have any easier way of unlocking them all.
For someone who’s spent almost all the time he’s been on Smash, telling people he doesn’t want it to be a core fighting game, and be open to casual players, you sure aren’t making the right decisions for them.

    1. Also, does this mean we can assume Nintendo will never make any effort what so ever into making a game, say like Metroid, or Zelda, which has an actually story that’s good, or interesting, with nice cutscenes (cutscenes aren’t evil, fanboys) that actually makes you care about what’s going on, because “Youtube”.

    2. The article writer is twisting the meaning. It doesn;t llok like there was any mention of “No story mode” just “No cut scenes” you also have to realize that apart from the meat of the game, it will likely have the events again,

Personally I would like to see a single player mode that is essentially streets of rage. thats the only reason I like subspace emissary

      1. “No cutscenes” is story mode.
Even in other games that have no story mode, like Street Fighter, they at least have something in arcade mode.
But it doesn’t change the fact people like story mode. Saying we’re not doing it because people put it on youtube is stupid. It’s extra content for the game.

  8. Brawl is a work of art in every way. The more competitive players still prefer melee but brawl is just a wonderful game in so many ways. Sub space emissary was just the evolution of adventure mode in melee, done much better and more thought out. While I’m sad to hear there won’t be a story mode, I’m confident Sakuai and Sora will still make it an enjoyable game. He puts his all into every game he does.

  9. Smash brothers Melee is still the mostly high rated of them. It hard no story mode. Smash brothers fans are turning into Metroid and Zelda, with cliques. You cannot please Zelda or Metroid fans completely lol.

  10. I love seeing Nintendos most famous characters in a movie cutscene! Sunspace emissary was one of the things I loved about brawl, and I watched the cutscenes more than 5 times. If Sakurai is worried that people will post cutscenes on the Internet he might as well stop making the game because people are just gonna post video of the game. At least that what I’m hearing “I don’t want my game shown on the Internet because people won’t enjoy the experience” people buy games because of what the Internet shows them via youtube. If someone saw an badass cutscene like the battle with the subsspace arc people will want to buy it. But people will buy it anyways sorely because of smash. I don’t mind no cutscenes, but cutscenes really tell a story to me IMO.. Well I’ve typed enough lol.

    1. youre right cutseens will be like promotion thats the main reason ff7 did so well it had amazing cutseens to put in the commercials. they just dont wanna make cutseens cuz its to much effort

    2. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

agree! Plus I think its very interesting how the characters interact with each other due to the situation of the film. It was great now what would happen if they did story mode with adventure mode? That would be so epic!

    3. I agree with you completely if it weren’t for let’s plays on the internet I probably wouldn’t have as many games as I have now I would still get the game cause it’s smash but cut scenes really made brawl a good experience

  11. Hmmmm… I loved the bosses of the Subspace Emisary… I would be very satisfied if the classic mode or other new modes has a diferent bosses aside from the Master hand…

    1. That would be awesome. Like I said, the only good things about SSE were the cutscenes and boss fights. It would be great if they could include a specific boss for each character… or for each, series, at least…but that’s probably asking to much xD

      1. I actually think that may be the case. In the Mega man reveal trailer, you can see Yellow Devil appearing at the end, with Mega man shooting at it.

  12. I never looked for the cutscenes in youtube. That’d totally kill the surprises for me. Who does that? 7 years old kids?

    1. People who either don’t plan on buying the game, or people who want to see what the game is like before buying it.

    2. I don’t know why Sakurai cares if other people look for cutscenes online. Everyone enjoys games differently. Just because some people check out the games cutscenes before experiencing it in the game doesn’t mean he CAN’T DO’ EM! 💋

      1. He just don’t want to admit that the 3ds version is limiting him so he can’t add a story mode for both versions .

  13. The Brawl Subspace whatever you call it got pretty boring after a while so I was hoping for a improvement in this game. But it doesn’t really bother me that much. Melee had no story mode type of thing and I like that more than Brawl.

  14. Honestly, the only good thing about SSE were the cutscenes and the boss fights. So since they’re working on intro animations for the characters, that’s cool, I don’t mind much if there isn’t a story mode… I would miss the boss fights though… maybe they could fit something similar to that (not necessarily being part of a story mode)? When I saw the image of Mega Man’s Yellow Devil, I thought that it could be a boss of some sort… but it could also be an Assist Trophy of course. Anyway, I hope they include fun extra modes.

  15. What a fucking dumb thing to do. That was a big part of brawl for me and it was awesome. The reasoning for getting rid of it is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Why has nintendo suddenly become so sensitive towards the internet?

  16. NOOOO! I loved the story mode! It was flawed, but I still loved it! The cutscenes were amazing. Watching all my favorite characters in the same world, fighting, uniting to fight something bigger… Please give us something!

    1. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

me to Pikachu & Yoshi forever of corse if they added Daisy I will be extremely happy!

    1. doesn’t mean he couldn’t improve on the story mode. Also, I liked SSE better because it had all the Nintendo characters team up, beat up bosses and save the world like a super hero team. Now it will feel like every other fighting game where you “just battle.” 💋

  17. Don’t care because I will never play a lame bros. game again.

Wtf is wrong with Mario’s left leg?

  18. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Is he completely stupid? I never looked for the cutscenes online. I got Brawl first-day and played the Subspace Emissary for the next three days. I loved it, and loved the cutscenes. Not having a proper story mode will just make the game drop in value. It’ll feel like it’s missing something (which it WILL).

And who cares if some people look at it online? There are plenty of people who played straight through, and there are people who watch cutscenes online for every game.

My only complaint with the cutscenes from Brawl was the lack of an option to watch all in a row.

  19. Worst thing about cut scenes… they stop you from playing the game… so I am fine with that
Waiting for the day when “cut scenes” or more thoroughly entwined in the gameplay

    1. But cutscenes look WAYYY cooler than actual videogame gameplay. I like that about cutscenes. Also they progress the story, or provide an introduction in awesome graphical displays! 💋

      1. They should look the same… I want to be able to play games that look like cut scenes I guess… and I like to see scenes as such that look just like what I am playing…. whatever

        1. Well we haven’t gotten to the point in gaming where cutscenes and actual gameplay look the same. It just costs too much money to make a game like that. 💋

  20. SherlockWillFightBilbo

And for the people who say, “Who cares, we just need Adventure Mode,” speak for yourself.

  21. I understand his reason for not wanting to make a story mode. But maybe the game should still come with a brawl movie that unlocks from a trophy you get from a in game mode by using each character in a battle mode where they will each have to fight there own set boss who is not a playable character. Like peach fighting daisy, sonic fighting shadow, or something like that.

  22. So at this point this next smash bros is already inferior to Brawl, no story mode, less characters, I mean why even bother then?

  23. THIS IS THE OUTCOME OF RUSHING A GAME’S DEVELOPMENT!

NINTENDO FANS, Complain about it and demand better or it will bite you in the ass at the end!!!!!!

I don’t care about those lame smash games but still….

    1. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

I know right! I wouldn’t mind waiting unlike ‘some fans’ I want the game be the best it can be without any random glitches! I don’t understand why fans can’t wait until the game should be out. It seems like the developers of the game are being rushed to the point were the game will not be as good. Thus we have a terrible game. Still waiting for another Mario Party too. Rushing the game will make it worse & shitty the developers need to take their time & not rush things.

  24. It’s official. I have lost interest in this game. Not because there’s no cutscenes or story mode but because I don’t feel like Sakurai really wants to make it. Every post I’ve seen has been about something he’s excluding, rather than things he’s including. In fact…the only things he’s announced he’s including are Megaman, Wii Fit Trainer, and Villager. I mean the idea of a 3DS game was incredible to me and I’ll buy that one, but at the same time…the exclusion of a story sort of takes away from the overall variety that the game has to offer. I’ve been a Smash fan since the original came out and I love Nintendo, but Sakurai is such a DIVA!!! Gosh…

    1. Honestly…announcing the Wii Fit Trainer and Villager first leaves a bad taste…I think Sakurai should have changed his priorities when hyping the game…

      1. I have to say…I’m disappointed. And everyone on here acts like a bunch of sheep. Anything Sakurai, Iwata, or Miyamoto says they’re cool with, and as soon as anyone says anything against anything Nintendo does they flip. Honestly…Sakurai is just being weak. He doesn’t have the spine to live up to what he feels. He doesn’t want to make the game. It’s been made obvious since the game was announced. Since Brawl came out actually. You can’t force a game. Shigesato Itoi gets it and that’s why we’ll never see Mother 4. People have to get that if Sakurai doesn’t want to do something it turns out terrible. Like all of the clones in Melee. Remember this Sakurai…you’re making the Wii U’s system seller. If you bust the system will probably go with you.

        1. When I saw the game was coming out in 2014…I already had the feeling it would be rushed.
As Miyamoto once said: ”A delayed game is eventually good, a rushed game is forever bad”.
Sadly, it doesn’t seem anyone at Nintendo is abiding to that, including Shiggy himself.

          1. Sticker Star failed, NSMB is dead to me. Super Mario 3D Land was OKAY, and 3D World looks like fun. Best Nintendo games at E3 for me were Mario Kart 8 and Mario and Luigi Dream Team. I mean…Miyamoto ruined Paper Mario but there’s still hope for the future of Mario and Zelda. So I wouldn’t count Miyamoto out yet. But yeah this is a huge disappointment. :(

            1. I’m still betting ”All In” for the Zelda on the Wii U…but by the time we’ll get an announcement for it, X will probably be out, and that’s the game that will make buy the damn console.

            2. Miyamoto was not deeply involved with Paper Mario: Sticker Star, blame Intelligent Systems instead.
Miyamoto delayed Pikmin 3, and he didn’t revelead his new IP and the new Zelda this E3 because it is too soon.

          1. Just saying, Masahiro Sakurai just like any employee is entitled to a medical leave of absence, as a human being (not a developer but a human) should’ve chosen to put his health as his first priority because otherwise it’s just going to add to the many factors as to why this game is going to be pretty incomplete.

    2. And about your main point. Yes.
During the days of Brawl, it was clear the Sakurai wanted it to be the final installment. From the looks of it, he’s not making the game because he wants to, he’s making the game because Nintendo is rushing him to do so.
Iwata announced it before he even started production, basically telling Sakurai ”K, now the whole world knows it’s happening, get to work”
And the E3 trailer was…underwhelming. It didn’t wow me at all, especially compared to the Brawl trailer…

      1. No, Lord Iwata clearly stated at E3 2012 that it was High Commander Sakurai’s idea to do these games…

The only thing Lord Iwata did was approaching to him as to what game he could do for the Wii U and then Sir Sakurai suggested Smash Brothers on both systems…

  25. Well there goes any interest I would’ve had for the game. Before anyone says I’m over-reacting, let me explain a few things.

    1. This is a bullshit reason. If you plan things out to release the game internationally at the same time, people watching cutscenes online before playing the game themselves shouldn’t be an issue. By that reasoning, no game ever should have cutscenes. This is just Sakurai covering up the fact he had to rush the game with a half-assed excuse

    2. Yes, the story in SSE wasn’t really great, and the great maze was a terrible way to make the story mode longer…but at least the team was TRYING to implement a story. See, here’s an opportunity that lots of crossovers flat out neglect: character interaction. You have all those characters from different universes…and they don’t ever talk to each other…they just fight for no reason.

    3. Most importantly, this is a NEXT GEN CONSOLE that’s way more powerful than the last one. This would mean that it could have magnificent cutscenes…so what do they do? They just throw the story out of the window. A story mode is a very important asset: it adds single player content. I expect someone to mention the adventure mode from Melee but personally, I found it to be even more repetitive than the Subspace Emissary. And playing through it multiple times to unlock characters was a total drag.

In conclusion, this is pretty much the Paper Mario Sticker Star situation, where instead of striving to make a story more interesting and engaging…you just give up and do nothing. This is a blatant lack of effort and wasted potential… it baffles me to see that so many of you are perfectly fine with this.

    1. Now, if he announces every character would have some kind of Arcade Mode where they all have their individual story, although without cutscenes, I could change my mind…but for now, I have no hope for the game.

  26. The troll to end all trolls

What the heck……. WE’RE NOT EVEN GETTING CUTSCENES BECAUSE PEOPLE UPLOAD THEM TO HE INTERNET???? SO FREAKING WHAT! Sakurai has so many questionable methods it’s not even funny.

  27. I don’t know why people are over reacting to this the guy add shit tons of content to his games. Even if there is no cutscenes big deal i buy smash bros to play smash bros nit to watch videos on it all day.He said was going to add character videos to the game, like the mega man one, though his excuse was kinda silly it does have some truth to it ,but he breaks it. Sakurai is good designer he works his ass off to make two version of a game for people to enjoy, and maybe because of the 3ds he can’t add a story mode due to it’s limits.

      1. Sakurai stated he wanted equal content to both games, he doesn’t like letting people be left out.

        1. Honestly…if this is supposed to the the system seller for the Wii U…I don’t get why he’s also making a version for a system that sells itself.

          1. Yes, sometimes I want Sakurai to cancel the 3DS version, the game is not looking well right now, if the only difference between the two versions is the stages and graphics, I’m going with the 3DS game.

        2. Equal content? That’s stupid should have never made it for 3DS. Like I said, Nintendo is a great company but sometimes make dumb decisions.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Yeah but Kid Icarus had voice actors and had 2D images of characters talking on the bottom screen, all of this going on during gameplay. Smash Bros lacks voice actors.

  28. Every since Melee i wanted to see cutscenes of characters interacting with each other sort of like the intro of SSBM but more expressed and a story behind it and I don’t think hes going to use the memory that was for a story to implement into gameplay its just going to be lackluster

  29. If they take story mode, then I am hoping for a level system, where you can play as link, for example, and level him up, unlocking extra moves, etc.

  30. For those who enjoy games as well as jazz: “To be a true artist you have to play the way you feel – not the way others think you should feel.” – Don Ellis

Mr. Sakurai, you disappointed me. A lot.

  31. Having no story mode sucks. Playing Subspace Emissary co-op with my son was our favorite part of the game.

I never watched a single one of the cut-scenes on the internet, but we watched them in-game again and again.

It’s like he’s making the new smash brothers particularly designed NOT to appeal to me. Oh well, maybe someone else will like it. I’m happy about the three new characters at least.

  32. Another day… another stupid Nintendo related decision.
Love it or hate it, without SSE Brawl would’ve been lacking something.
A lot of people enjoy a single player campaign that actually has a story to it.
Excluding it because cutscenes were viewed is a pathetic excuse to release a hyped up, but half-baked game.

My interest in this game has dropped because of this.

  33. Not sure how I feel about this.. on the other hand. I guess this means they are removing Tabuu!! I wasn’t a fan of him. I was kinda excited to see what they’d do for a story mode this time around :/ 💋

  34. You know what? As Long as there is some form of CG Scenes, im fine…. but still what a ridiculous reason, you cant even find the.videos ANYWHERE! The reason he gave is completely invalid!

        1. His “reason” is that if he made a story mode with fully fleshed out cutscenes for SSB4, people would record them, put them on the internet, and people would be able to view them without actually playing the game. Sakurai feels like this would destroy the point of playing through the story mode and would not reward the player. That’s seriously what the article said, or did you not read the article like the 500 other whining babies on here?

  35. I wanted to see all the characters come together I like watching movie clips of the game that what makes it exciting whats the point of getting the wiiU version now :(

  36. This is sad. People saying that Wii U is at least 3-4yrs late joining the HD Realm is plain wrong. It is actually 2-3yrs early. Obviously, Ninty is not yet ready for HD development and an extensive online structure.

    1. Geez, i’m,not yet finished. WTF Nintendo! Brawl is a system seller, put all your effort into it because there will be only ONE of the series per console. GRrrrRRRRrr!!!

  37. they mistranslated it, he didn’t say anything about not having cutscenes, just that they will be available from the start. i’m sick of misinformation being spread about this game

  38. I think I am the only one who is not mad at Sakuri. I would do the same as he did in his position. Why? Because one of the most magical feelings in gaming is experiencing/achieving something for the first time, with no outside influence (ex: exploring Hyrule and finding dungeons in the first Zelda game without looking them up). If you are just going to go on YouTube and look up the cutscenes, what’s the point? Then the only reason SSE exists to you is to unlock characters, which can be done more effectively by a arcade mode or something similar. So,in short, I totally and completely agree with Sakuri.

Thank you for what you do
    – A grateful fan

    1. el durako akolatronico

How the fuck do you look up cutscenes that will not exist? His reason is ridiculous. This, wii lame trainer, and twilight link dropped any hype for this game. I WAS going to drop a hundred bucks in both games, but this is too stupid. If Shulk and Lucina are in, then I might give them the hundred bucks.

    2. See this is what I like from people saying the good out runs the bad. I don’t care if they don’t have story mode IT’S SMASH BROS it doesn’t need one

  39. Very disappointed! I really enjoyed the subspace emissary mode and story modes from previous Super Smash Bros. games. Hopefully he’s pulling the wool over our eyes and includes some form of a story mode.

  40. I never played brawl just for the story but I’m still disappointed. I thought the story was great except for the whole sonic’s late late late appearance in it. I never seen a good story that didn’t even need dialogs. I’m sad to see the new smas bros. wont have one

  41. all those epic cutscenes those great bosses. why sakurai. ITS MIIVERSE TIME AND ERN THE STORY MODE BACK.

  42. I think you guys are misunderstanding something here… He isn’t scratching the single player experience. He’s just not making a story mode, which focuses on cutscenes like the story mode brawl had; where having the cutscenes leaked all over the web for people, who haven’t played the story mode, will not be surprised and know what the scenes will contain, if they play the story mode, and won’t get the same excitement as they would, if they didn’t see them beforehand. That’s why Sakurai is making cutscenes that won’t spoil your adventure in the single player mode. Basically, making the single player experience much more fun, for people who’ve waited and waited for the game. That’s kinda the opposite of what most of you guys think. Ex Deeeeeeeeeee

  43. It’s a shame because the Brawl cutscenes looked incredible. These ones had so much potential. Oh well

  44. In my opinion Subspace Emissary in Brawl made it far too easy to really unlock things on one’s own. I loved unlocking things with my friends in Melee. We’d always take turns on things or just beat the crap out of each other to try and get higher scores.

Not all games need to have fancy, glorified cutscenes. If that’s the only reason you’re not going to play a game or if you’re going to bash the whole development tea because of the decision to not have any, then in honesty I think you need to re-establish what kind of games you want to play.

Not all games need a storyline. Smash 64 never really had one and neither did Melee, and considering the kind of games the Smash Bros. series is a ‘story line’ would just be a ‘plus’ or sorts. The kind of game that the series is really makes a ‘plot’ or ‘story mode’ quite unnecessary.

The only way I can envision a ‘story mode’ of sorts working is something like Event Mode, where the characters have little events or tasks or missions centered around them and their game world, not including or crossing over the boundaries of the other characters outside of their franchise.

Subspace in Brawl was interesting but it felt rushed and in the end seemed ridiculously messy. There were too many characters to cover to really make it a true “story”, and even to keep it interesting. I often found myself going “wait, what was that guy doing again?” when they’d pop up later down the line.

With all of those characters and considering the main purpose of the games ‘story mode’ and fancy cutscenes are really unneeded. The cutscenes may be entertaining but be honest, how many of us actually went into the archive to rewatch them because they were “cool” or “fantastic”? I sure as hell know I didn’t.

  45. DAMN IT! Story Mode was amazing in Brawl it was so epic. This is kind of making me less excites to be honest, the way Sakurai talks about it makes it sound like he doesn’t even like the fact that he’s making a 3DS version. Super Smash Bros Trilogy is my favorite fighting game series of all time but this one idk I’m so hyped for this game but idk I’m starting to feel bummed that there’s no story mode and that the 3DS limits the Wii U version and I feel like they should be adding features and not taking away for features from the last installment and honestly the Internet part is the dumbest thing I’ve heard I saw a lot of The Last Of Us and Super Paper Mario on the Internet but that didn’t make the experience any less moving and amazing. //:

  46. Okay this Smash Bros. is really beginning to suck dick. I mean c’mon Sakurai! Get your shit together. I loved the Subspace Emissary. The only thing to improve it would have been maybe online co-op and some dialogue. Also cutting down characters is going to make this game less fun. I realize that Brawl is a platinum caliber game and will be super tough to beat but Sakurai is making a ton of bad decisions with this installment of Smash Bros. 1. The name is absolutely boring and lazy. 2. Cutting down characters will make it feel like a gimped version of Brawl. 3. No story mode is just pathetic and will mean less content for the overall game. 4. The trailer of announcing the game was super pathetic and boring compared to the Brawl reveal trailer. I honestly think the Brawl reveal trailer looked better graphically and was just filled with 1,000x more epicness and surprises. I mean how can you top the reveal of Snake as a character at the end? I will still get this game but so far I have been nothing but disappointed in it. I think Sakurai has finally lost his touch.

    1. The troll to end all trolls

Guess what? There will also be EVEN LESS characters than in Brawl. He confirmed it…..

    2. i feel exactly the same way, they are taking too fucking many steps back its not even funny. if this game has less characters than brawl, which im guessing that is most likely what is going to happen, then i dont know what i will do. i was personally looking forward to the stage builder stuff its cool to be able to make your own stages and fight in them, but no im guessing that shit will be cut out like everything else! i am beyond disappointed.

  47. But everything’s uploaded to the internet. Walkthroughs, how to play videos… The truth is, a lot of people want to buy a game but would rather just see cutscenes and piece things together. This happens all the time.

  48. This is really disappointing. The cutscenes still feel rewarding even after having watched them tons of times. SSE was the high light of brawl for me. I replayed it over and over again. This game won’t live up to brawl if it doesn’t have a mode just as good. This is just my opinion.

  49. I didn’t LOVE playing Subspace. But those videos were magical… I hope he at least makes a kick ass opening one, rather then just a bunch of gameplay like they did for brawl.

  50. What the fuck? Namco Bandai was specifically brought in to work on the Campaign mode…What the fuck are they doing then? Unless they brought back the classic beat 3 rounds do a board the platformers then another 3 rounds then break the targets then 3 more rounds then fight Master Hand…Then that’s okay.

  51. el durako akolatronico

    1. Twilight Link, huh?
So you’d rather have the cheap, watered down, low budget Skyward Sword version?

    2. Does it seriously matter what version Link there is? Twilight Link and Skyward Sword Link are practically the same. Their designs are a hell of a lot better than his Ocarina of Time designs too. And when he said people would be “looking up cutscenes” he meant after the game was released you dolt. People would look up the cutscenes instead of actually play through the game to reveal them. Jesus fuck.

  52. Why is it that the more I hear about this game, the less interested I become? Sure, the Subspace Emissary mode drove me crazy because of how none of the characters ever spoke, and they just acted like puppets. But still, no story mode? That’s like hearing, we’re going back to the days of Atari 2600, and the point of the game is trying to make a high score.

  53. I actually hated the subspace emissary. It was too long and repetetive and most of the time forced me to use characters i didn’t want. and trying to add a platformer gameplay element to brawl is meh, because lets be honest. Most people did subspace to unlock all the characters because they werent available. But i just did not enjoy the annoying missions in subspace. I did whoever love the cutscenes. Boss battles were okay since we could play them in a boss battle mode anyways.
But! i am dissapointed that he completely ruled out any kind of story. It really leaves out the feeling of playing when im home alone. I mostly played brawl with friends. and online when i was alone (whenever it wouldnt lag…) But since im strongly assuming online wont be laggy like brawl, i can live with that

  54. We all know that Sakurai is just making excuses to cover up the fact that he can’t work in the state he is in.

  55. We better get some damn good reveals the next few months or so, because this is just plain disappointing.

  56. he better not ruin smash bros. that and zelda are the only franchises I look forward to from nintendo systems.

  57. Well, I’m really not a fan of the lack of cutscenes.
But as long as they make an big and good Adventure Mode, it won’t be that big of a problem.
But yeah, I’ll miss the cutscenes. D:

  58. I really dont want no more news on smash bros every update ruins it for more. That goes double for smash bros dojo which is why I never visit that. And you guys complain too much might fuck around and give poor sakurai a damn heart attack.

  59. Sakurai, WILL YOU SHUT UP!!! You are stubborn, biased, self-entitled man and you treat your opinions like facts! Stop being a big liar/baby!! So that means Nintendo is the only company who done this!!

      1. Considering how they responded to certain games like Sonic Unleashed and Shadow the Hedgehog, much worse.

  60. The actual story of Subspace Emissary was pretty lame. Like, it was fun to go on an adventure with friends, but the plot was completely lost on me. If there’s an adventure mode like the one in Melee that includes multiplayer and isn’t story driven, that sounds great! What I’m really happy about is intro videos for all the new characters. I seriously think that’s the coolest thing. :)

  61. To be fair, Melee’s Adventure Mode was better than Brawl’s SSE. Who am I kidding? I’m in the ‘Melee is better than Brawl’ camp.

Lack of cutscenes just frees up more space so that they can add additional content, be it music, arenas, game modes or whatever else they want to. As long as it stays true to the Smash feel and rubric gameplay wise, I see no issue.

    1. Melee was better gameplay wise, and Brawl was better content wise.

I hated melees adventure mode. It gets so repetitive. SSE can be repetitive as well but its still more fun.

  62. well the only reason i bought my wii u is for this game so if there isn’t something like story mode in it i’m sorry to say i won’t be purchasing and i’ll be getting rid of my wii u cause i’m not buying it and playing arcade mode 20+ times to unlock characters cause thats so boring

    1. Dude! Calm down!
Don’t get rid of your $300 Wii U just because of this!

Yes, it’s a horrible disappointment for us all… But don’t waste your money man!

  63. This is kinda stupid actually- SSMB was not the first and only game whose cutscenes were uploaded to the net.. no other developer made any claim as such. Also I’m still bummed on why the 3ds version is holding back the wiiu version if they are completely diff. and dont support crossplay |??

      1. Exactly.. they really need to sell the wiiu right now and this game alone is a system seller.. if you make the same game available on the very popular 3ds with the same amount of characters why on earth would people buy a wiiu for it? Pretty much everyone has a 3ds now , dont u think many would just buy the latter itself?

      2. they should cancel the 3ds version and give the wii u story mode, more characters and great online play.

  64. That’s fine by me. I didn’t much care for the “story mode” of Brawl. Felt like a bunch of hokey fanservice tied together with a cliche storm.

  65. I’ll be okay without story mode or the cutscenes, either way I’m getting both versions of game, but I am sad to see the story mode go. It cool to see how all the characters came together in one world. I just hope that the campaign mode is going to be likely adventure mode and the characters are going to get the own adventure mode instead of sharing only one

  66. Ah, bit of a disappointment… I thought Subspace Emissary was a very interesting thing to include and definitely worked well. It was simple and easy to get into and completely optional (also an easier way to unlock characters, which I loved) and I just thought it was a very cool thing to include.
As far as not including it because scenes were on the internet, I think the man needs to get over himself, just a little. I don’t know a better way of saying that, because it’s near impossible to prevent people from at least recording the cutscenes and doing everything they can to upload them. Other game developers deal with it; it’s not like SSBB tanked because of it or anything.
Honestly, I think he might actually suffer a bit by not including it (perhaps not in sales, but in reception).

  67. I really love Subspace Emissary all the way
It would be a shame that there was no story mode in the next SuperSmash. :C
I totally disagree with the exclusion of it

  68. Pingback: El nuevo Super Smash Bros no tendrá modo historia | Charly comparte

  69. From all the talk about what’s not going to be in this game I’m really starting to get concerned that it’s going to suck. No cut-scenes. No story mode. We’ve been told not to hold our breath for 3rd party characters beyond Mega Man. Wii U won’t have any additional characters beyond what the 3DS version has. That last point in particular really rubs me the wrong way. Handhelds are acknowledged as not being the full extent of a home console system. Why are we getting a dumbed-down version of the game on the Wii U when it could handle much more than what the 3DS version gets? Kinda irritated at all of this BS…

  70. If that’s the case he might as well never make a game ever again because people put gameplay videos online.

    1. Funny, but true! People WILL upload videos from prereleased games. It just happens.
To completely obliterate such an enormous amount of the game just because of that is ridiculous! :C

      1. yeah thats like saying “mario and luigi dream team wont be released in america because europeans put gameplay on the internet”

  71. Hope I’m interpreting this incorrectly!

“Sakurai also mentioned that there would be an addition to the 3DS version that would act as a separate mode from the standard versus play.”

I hope this doesn’t replace the VS mode in the 3DS version…

  72. You know what, postpone this game. It’s rushed. Too much shit taken out. Even the first SSB has a Story Mode. And why choose to limit Wii u? Nintendo is stupid!!!! Great games dumb decisions!!!!

    1. I completely agree! It’s better to wait a long time for a great game than to only wait a little while for a horrible game.

  73. The thing is pretty obvious: Nintendo is pressing Sakurai to finish the game as soon as possible. Period. They know that Smash Bros is a console seller and that’s why we are not getting a story mode. That’s why there won’t be new third party characters nor major surprises. I’m even thinking that the online mode is going to suck again. Sakurai’s justifications are poor and lame. Hope I’m wrong, but…

      1. ok but if you count IGN as one of those review companies you’ll check out you are an idiot because theyre morons with no common sense

  74. DJSTEELER aka WINTENDO

I disagree with his logic, so just because people upload them online, you don’t want to do them again? I liked the subspace emissary, hope the 1 player is good like brawl

  75. Pingback: Sakurai: Super Smash Bros. no contará con modo de historia ni cortos cinemáticos | NintenDominante

  76. Bullshit. They’re just saying this because they don’t want to spend extra time on making the game better.

    1. the wii u is selling ok but not even close to what the wii did, this game is the one that can make up for this so why the HELL would they work lazy on it

  77. They’re going to have to release free DLC for this game later. Unless they delay it to 2015, it’s most likely not going to be a completed game.

    1. Thats my thoughts exacly, He’s just going to have to do one sooner or later if he hopes to make the game a complete success, its just like me arguing with people about wanting ridley being in as a playable character. Too me, I don’t think he should be playable due to his size and the hackers made him eww. But anyways, that’s not the case. The storyline should not be taken out, the story and all the developers who made those characters and games, made this one single power house game possible.

  78. Pingback: Masahiro Sakurai opina sobre lo filtrado de Super Smash Bros. Universe | ResetMX

  79. That’s a disappointment. I really liked the cutscenes. Some were quite humorous. While the story in Brawl was awful some cutscenes were enjoyable. So let me get this straight….he is punishing people like me who stay away from any game spoilers till I actually get to play myself because of the idiots across the Internet who like to spoil everything?! Yeah makes perfect sense Sakurai. You totally just lost point in my book. Japanese reasoning makes no sense at all.

  80. To be honest, I am horribly disappointed! :(
I’m not gonna die or anything… But the new campaign was something that I was REALLY looking forward to in this new Smash Bros game. I just don’t understand why they have to completely get rid if all the cutscenes and the story mode itself just because a few cutscenes were uploaded onto the Internet. :/
I mean, the same thing happened with Brawl! And they didn’t cancel the Subspace Emissary. :(
(I love the SE by the way. The only thing it lacks was some good dialog)

… Also, WHAT THE?! I had NO idea that some cutscenes were uploaded to the Internet!! :O
Where can I find them? YouTube?

  81. I’m afraid I don’t get Sakurai’s logic. :/
As much as I’d love the game to come out sooner, it will be SO much more worth playing if they just spend a little more time developing it.

Between only waiting a little bit for a crappy game, and having to wait awhile for a great game… I think the latter is more agreeable. ;)

And let’s not forget what happened when SEGA rushed the production of Sonic ’06! We all know how terribly glitchy that was! :C
Please! Nintendo! Don’t make the same mistake with Smash Bros!

  82. Guys, let’s say that Nintendo is the only Japanese oriented video game company who treats their employees like this, hands down! Also Masahiro Sakurai treats his Smash Bros fans like this, and Super Smash Bros Wii U/3DS will receive negative reviews, if Sakurai does not include a story mode.

  83. You people suck give the guy a break he’s worked on all three games and all were good so why not this one. Geeeezzzzz

  84. Most of the people I’ve known wouldn’t spoil it for themselves by watching cutscenes online first. They aren’t forced to see them.

  85. I don’t like this.

Brawl was my first Smash Bros. game as I never owned a Nintendo home console until the Wii (I’m quite young and when I wanted to get a GC I couldn’t find any around my city). I first started the arcade mode, and sure, it was fun. But I didn’t quite ‘get’ it. So I decided to try the Subspace Emissary. And I got it.

See, I wasn’t really familiar with any of the IPs except for the famous ones like Mario, Zelda, and Donkey Kong. But playing the story mode, it gave me some pieces of knowledge about these characters. I got excited for them. I wanted to play every one of them. I wanted to master their moves. Then, the unlockable characters started showing up. When it came to Snake I was fangirling. Not because “Oh, I KNOW THIS GUY” but “Oh, I KNOW THIS GUY AND HE’S GONNA KICK SOME BUTT WITH THE CHARACTERS I’VE GROWN FOND OF”.

tl;dr – if it wasn’t for Subspace Emissary, I wouldn’t have asked my friends to come for multiplayer fun and REALLY ‘got’ what Smash Bros. was about.

I really hope they change their mind about this…

  86. what is the most important thing for me is good online play. If you can play two people against 2 other people (like in mario strikers charged) i dont care about the story mode. However if that is not the case and the characters aren’t as many as in brawl, then a story mode is a complete MUST, and it would make an awesome game twice as good, brawl is my favorite game of all time and i thought this game could beat it, now im not sure.

  87. sure super smash bros 1 and 2 didn’t have a lot of characters, online play or story mode, but were they good compared to brawl? not at all, quite bad actually.

  88. Seriously, Sakurai? No Samus teaming up with Pikachu? No Mario Vs. Kirby? No Nintendo All-Stars trying to save the universe together as a big team? o_o

  89. Sakurai PLEASE PLEASE JUST DELAY IT ANOTHER YEAR, A RUSHED GAME WILL SURELY BE A BAD GAME TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED TO MAKE IT PERFECT

  90. DarklordNintendoFan

Well, as sad as this news is… we won’t have to worry about the lazy man’s way of unlocking characters. I hate being able to play through the story and unlocking the characters as you go through it… it’s just so lazy.
