It appears as though a number of high-profile retailers have completely stopped stocking the Wii U 8GB Basic package. Whether the stores are discontinuing reordering stock as the console isn’t selling as well as they had hoped remains to be seen. There was also rumour a few months back that suggested that Nintendo were scrapping the Basic pack and introducing the 32GB Premium pack as the main model, but this has yet to materialise.

Depends on where you live and how much you want Nintendo Land.
Where I live (Brazil) the difference wasn’t US$ 50, but the equivalent in local currency to US$ 150, so the basic model is the most logical choice: with lessa than that difference, I bought a much better game (ZombiU) and a 320 GB hard drive, or more than 10x times the space difference between the sets.
Even if you don’t agree with my choice of game (ZombiU), the physical copy of Nintendo Land goes for about US$ 80 here, so you’re saving even more money getting it for US$ 50 through the eShop, and will have plenty of space to save it in your new hard drive.
I can only see getting the deluxe set here if you REALLY want a black Wii U, will REALLY spend lots of dough every month on the eShop, and/or is able to import it dodging the abusive local taxes (during a trip abroad, for example). Otherwise it’s foolish and shortsighted.
By the way, the console has not been released officially in here (and in Latin America in general I believe) yet, but there’s rumors it will happen during the holidays. I won’t be surprised if Nintendo was pulling off the basic set to sell them here, fully aware that the set will be more attractive – price is a big issue with all those high taxes here, the cheaper the better.

You’re right and I really can’t see the point for the Wii to continue to exist when the Wii U is here, can do everything the Wii can and much more. So keeping it alive to beat PS2’s record is a ridiculous long shot. Wii’s time is close to its end so just end it. Its already the fastest selling console in history plus its Nintendo’s best selling console ever so those records are good enough for now. DS however is much closer to beating PS2’s record than Wii. The 3DS, based on its outrageous success right now, looks like it has a good chance to overcome both its predecessor and PS2’s records combined.
Ignoring the main reason PS2 was such a success was because at the time DVD players were popular before internet streaming.
Well Nintendo better bring out some new colors pretty darn soon, because I’m getting SICK of waiting to buy a Wii U. I REFUSE to buy the black one (or the white). When Pikmin 3 releases here in North America on August 4th, it’s going to KILL ME not being able to play it. HURRY UP NINTENDO!!!!!!!!
