Zelda Producer Kind Of Talks Majora’s Mask Remake

majorasmask

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma was recently questioned by IGN about the much requested The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask remake. Aonuma laughed at the question if Nintendo fans might see the game remade soon. You will noticed that he purposefully left his answer open for interpretation. Maybe we will hear about it at E3.

“Please write that I laughed. Don’t make it sound like I laughed because I was troubled or inconvenienced or put out. I don’t want them to read anything into it. But if you want to say that I laughed, I think that would be a good answer. It’s really up to them. If they want to interpret my laughter as, ‘yeah, we’re making it’ or ‘no, we’re not,’ I guess that’s really up to them.”

        1. You’re getting your original games. Let us have our remakes. If you’re going to continue to be a Nintendo fan you need more patience

                1. You need to buy every single Nintendo games in the world. Also you need to defend the Nintendo Company with your life! You will hate all Sony, Microsoft, OUYA, Google, and even Apple products. You will think your console is better than everybody consoles. No matter how terrible the game is that created by Nintendo and you must like it and enjoy it for your sake!

That is how to become a true Nintendo fan! :P

                  1. I personally feel that all it takes to be a “fan” of a company is to like something they do or make. I love Nintendo’s ever-growing library of first-party franchises.

When you get into actively bashing and hating on other companies (Sony, Microsoft, Apple) just because they aren’t your personal favorite (A.K.A. not Nintendo), rather than for more legitimate reasons, then I see that as the behavior of a “fanboy” rather than a true fan. That’s just my opinion though.

          1. Well… they did make Ocarina of Time for Nintendo 3DS. They did make Wind Waker in HD, they did remake Super Mario Bros 1, 2, and 3 into one Mario All-Star. They did make… you get the idea.

        2. A Link between worlds isn’t original? They are also working on the new Zelda Wii U, they actually had a trailer to show at E3, but decided against it. Just cause there are remakes, doesn’t necessarily mean it takes progress away from the new ones.

        3. Remakes do not hinder the development of new games, in fact it may help with it since Nintendo is earning more money from those remakes. The team in charge of the remakes is an entirely different team from the one that makes original games. It’s true that these teams could merge to all work on the original game, but a large team doesn’t always mean an effective team. The game could end up being rushed and will lose the magic that Zelda games have.

        4. why? i’m sure they’re making original games while doing remakes. i’d love to play majoras mask on 3ds or an hd version on wii u. i don’t think that it’s goin’ to be a bad idea at all

      1. yes, because why the fuck would nintendo make a remake fans want, when instead they can just make the one that doesn’t need to be made

    1. I say, Nintendo should do a Majora’s Mask remake because not many people have played it and releasing it on 3DS will make them play it and we already have OoT 3D now we need its sequel. After this game is remade, they should with the remakes.

    2. The Troll to End All Trolls

I’ll agree with you that we don’t need more rehashes, but I’m fine with them remaking this. I mean, they DId remake OoT already. Why not Majora’s Mask?

    1. Lots? Maybe in other companies, but I really have only seen a couple of remakes (improved graphics, not ports like Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii or Donkey Kong Country returns on the 3DS). for Nintendo. Also, New Play Control Games don’t count. Link’s Awakening DX, Wind Waker HD, Ocarina of Time 3D, Super Mario 64 DS, Star Fox 64 3D, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Punch-Out!! for Wii, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, and the Super Mario original series (1, 2, 3, and World) on GBA. Only 12. That’s not an awful lot.

      1. I can’t tell if your being serious or not. I only said that to be dumb to the person above. I meant it as a comment to theirs

  1. Wow. It clearly meant absolutely nothing. Why have you written an article based off a quotation that not read into what he’s saying?

    1. An Ocarina of Time remake wouldn’t make a bit of sense in any near time, seeing as the somewhat-recent 3DS remake (which is STILL selling like eggs) would become wasted effort.

Also, you don’t need to go out of your way to say your words are your opinion. Unless you’ve stressed that what you’ve said is indisputably factual, one can automatically assume that you’re speaking from an opinion.

  2. That’s not a straight out no then, he wouldn’t say yes because nothing’s official, but wouldn’t say no because doesn’t want to let fans down and let us hold onto hope, until we hear something official! Like it’s stated above, maybe hear something at e3?

  3. This sounds like a “yes” to me. “It’s really up to them. If they want to interpret my laughter as, ‘yeah, we’re making it’ or ‘no, we’re not,’ I guess that’s really up to them.” If it’s between a “yes” and a “no” and “maybe” or “we haven’t decided yet” isn’t an option, it has to be a “yes.” I mean, why would Nintendo have suddenly ruled this out? Also, why would this question prompt Aonuma to laugh if the answer is “no?” A) He could just say “no” because that’s not giving any big announcement away prematurely, and B) imagine Aonuma laughing at someone asking about a Majora’s Mask remake because it ISN’T going to happen. That would be pretty cold.

  4. That’s a yes!! And everyone rides the ocarina of time ban wagon still a great game but MM is better. has harder dungeons, harder bosses, and is just a harder game And it was the most unique in the Zelda series the mysteriousness of it made it better IMO

    1. By that logic, most console Zelda games after OoT did it better, and there is truth to that. They had more resources, frequently learned from preceding games’ mistakes, and overall refined the 3D Zelda formula. I’d love to call Wind Waker the best Zelda for a few reasons, however, people will (perhaps justifiably) jump on the OoT bandwagon because it was the greatest, most impactful leap in the series, and because it was there that Nintendo invented the basic 3D Zelda formula.

  5. He definitely laughed because the people demanding it have been super vocal about it. Almost as if he were saying “Oh, that!”

I’m feeling certain we’ll see something within the next few years, but as Aonuma said for now there’s no way to know for sure.

  6. This is pretty much a yes. If they weren’t working on it he would say we have nothing to announce at the moment. And I doubt it would be an HD version for Wii U. It would just make sense to follow OOT and be on 3DS.

  7. fuck no. that game is only 4 hours long if you play it nonstop. there are far better zelda games out there to remake than that shit.

          1. understandable, but I can’t imagine spending days and days on a 4-5 hours game. maybe if they extended the story and added more dungeons then a remake is feasible.

  8. I hope that majora’s mask gets remade for the 3ds. I never had a chance to play it when it was released on the game cube. There is nothing wrong with games getting remakes and it is very ignorant that some people fail to realize that not everyone had the chance to play a game around the time it was first released. If you dont like/want a remake of a game that you may have already bought and played, then that is fine. nothing is wrong that and you don’t have to buy it again, but damn, it’s fucked up that people can be so closed minded and inconsiderate of others.

  9. That’s write, gimme dat Majora’s Mask.
A lot of people haven’t played this one, it had a lot smaller success than OoT so I’m sure it would sell very well.

  10. Clever, Aonuma ,clever. Guess that we will see if Majora’s Mask is going to be remade or not. Signs point to yes; but It’ll be revealed next year… in gaming magazines. (had to Kamiya nod there).

Besides, I’m expecting it to be revealed at a Nintendo Direct here in the not so far future.

  11. i would mostly want it on wiiu in my opinnion just looking how amazing it would look it is the best zelda game to me by far the story was amazing and you didnt have to deal with zelda getting kidnaped instead u have to save the whole planet now thats amazing :) and that fan made trailor of majoras mask for the wiiu was so dam amazing!!!! i was jumping up an down hoping it was real and maybe it will become truth :) and if they could add a master mode and hero mode xD

  12. For me, the thing that ruined Majora’s Mask was the fact that there was no Zelda or Ganon (except Zelda in flashbacks). But the biggest thing that ruined it (for me) was the fact of nobody remembering you every time you go back to Day 1 again. All of that help I gave to Anju and Kafai (if I spelled that right), helping to reunite them. And they didn’t even remember Link at the end (I was also looking forward t seeing them get married. Not just short little clips during the credits). Sorry, but that just took all of the gloating satisfaction away from the game.

I also believe it would have been a MUCH better story if it had been Ganon that was causing the moon to crash. Instead of, Skull Kid? Still a great game, but just not one of my favorite Zelda titles.

With all of that said, I hope if they DO remake this that it’s on Wii U in HD. Because HD would look SO much more impressive than the blocky, nausea-inducing 3D on the 3DS. But I want an HD Ocarina Of Time first. That game DESERVES the HD treatment like no other.

  13. to anybody who thinks MM sucks obviously hates clever, innovative, dark, harder zelda games, also the best side quests, some of the best music creative game nintendo ever made, especially 3d zelda games. you think this game sucks but yet you stick up fou skyward shit, that is nothing i listed up there. you must just like having your hand held while wearing your diapers.

this is the game that should have had a wii u hd remake, i would also like OOT to have one in hd, instead of playinhg it on a fucking handheld. i dont want to play 3d zeldas on a handheld, its stupid. just like luigis mansion is a console game.

    1. Skyward Sword is innovative. It’s also bright, uplifting, romantic, full of untested puzzles, overflowing with subtle and complex and actually orchestrated music, and it has more polish and cinematic flair than any title yet. It has the most dense and challenging game world outside of dungeons, and the dungeons are all spectacular. The boss fights are my favorite in the series.

Majora’s Mask is also awesome for all the reasons you stated and a few more.

    2. @iceazeama,
I can’t believe that I actually agree with what you just said (that last part about 3D Zelda’s and Luigi’s Mansion on a handheld). SO true! Even Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. SO unfortunate that those wasn’t on the Wii. Wind Waker was a Gamecube title, so P.H. and S.T. should have been on the Wii.

  14. Such an expertly trollish answer – Nintendo and their ilk are craftmasters of the PR spin game, and this demonstrates it quite nicely…a harmless ‘perhaps, perhaps not’ answer that leaves the fans guessing until the bitter end! XD

  15. Well then… I interpret that laugh as “yes we are remaking it from the ground up with additional surprised in store and yes, it will be on the Wii-U next Fall!” That’s my interpretation of his laugh.

    As for the whiners going on about rehashes and remakes;
There are nothing but rehashes/remakes on other consoles and PC.
Every so called original game calls back to some original concept or idea that was done ages ago.. so STFU!

  18. Majora’s Mask was made in a year.
The remake could be done even faster. assuming it’s for 3DS and won’t require entirely new assets. (say if it was for Wii U, not that I’d complain. I might actually buy one.)

They used all (not literally all but most of/a lot of) the OoT assets. Now that the story, dialogue, dungeon design, character design etc are already in place. They should theoretically be able to complete it in less the original dev time. less than a year.
    pretty crazy..
