How To Survive Dev Explains Why Multiplayer Was Left Out Of Wii U Version

how-to-survive-logo

In mid-August, we reported that much like Batman: Arkham Origins, How To Survive by 505 Games would be arriving on Wii U without the online multiplayer found on other consoles. In a recent question and answer session, director of How To Survive, Jules Benjamin of Eko Software, has essentially stated that the online multiplayer was left out of the Wii U version in order to improve and focus on the game’s story mode, in addition to adding in features for the gamepad. He revealed that his team felt that was more important than “…doing a straight port and not taking care of the second screen.” Benjamin also revealed that the Wii U version’s special interface will allow for actions not possible on other platforms. Full comments appear below.

“Thanks a lot for this question, we were waiting the chance to explain. The Wii U has a lot of unique features and we needed to make the right choices. We preferred to improve the biggest part of the game – the story mode – and develop specific features for the Wii U instead of doing a straight port and not taking care of the second screen.”

    1. If this game only had online multiplayer I would say forget the gamepad and add multiplayer. This game is supposed to have local co op so I’m hoping that what they meant by the gamepad integration is another player with his own screen. If they did that I would buy this game.

    2. Know it doen’t they’re a bunch of dicks. Many games on Wiiu have gamepad features AND online.

Gamepad features are awesome but they have no reason to make a dev decide not to do online. That’s BS.

    1. what would you feel if the same was to be done to your precious ps4 version? (assuming that the game was to be released on the said console). wouldn’t you complain?

      1. Yes, i would complain. I dont care about the platoform, if its bad = ITS BAD. YOu cant deny that. The Wii U version cant be superior if it has only less features or some new features and some less features.

      1. lacking features is fair? WTF? 8 years old consoles are doing better than Wii U….. cmon. The PS3/360 were designed with a standard controller in mind, Wii U was designed with a Wii U tablet/touch controller in mind. Ok, they should utilize the full potential for Wii U controller but tell me then, why shouldnt they utilize the full potential of the Wii U console (network aka online connetion, hardware in general).

All i see is a fanboys on this site (mostly)

  1. Worst explanation I’ve ever heard. Put in MP as well as whatever else you want to add. Just Add shit. Do not Add and Subtract, understand!

    1. From that they learn, that they do’nt even have to try sell it on one system, since people who know to complain about these things, buy their games for another system.

      1. If you dont lack common sense you should ofc complain about that. So, PS3 version is a better choice for most ppl. I mean, its fine to utlize the Wii U tablet/touch controller but cmon, thats just a LAME excuse….. no multiplayer, less feautures, less game modes… BIG FACEPALM.

  2. How about, We believe that there will not be many people buying our game on the wii u based on the sales of other 3rd party games on the platform. So we just thought it would be a waste of time putting multiplayer in the game.

  3. Thats not a excuse, thats a cover up. Another reason not to buy the wii u version. You seriously can only blame nintendo on this because they don’t make it inviting or cut a deal to bring the full experience. To some people online is a selling point, imagine a shooter game like call of duty or battlefield with no online play? Oh but its got a story mode so thats good enough, here you go wii u owners 60 bucks for a offline experience. While ps3 n xbox get the full game for the same price. Don’t get me wrong I love nintendo, but really don’t lie to us and tell us you got great 3rd party support then give us games that are missing content and features or better yet shovelware garbage. I just bought a wii u and all I wanted it 4 was for the zelda custom gamepad. I love wind waker but I want my battlefield and gta 5 on it. I would love to see what they could had done with the touch screen. Lowering your price was a start, now please give us the games so 3rd party could see the wii u as a money maker and not a lost cause. Its not our fault you have a expensive controller, you knew well that it was a risk now just support it please.

      1. Please read. He bought the Wii U basically for EXCLUSIVE titles and at the same time, he would like to have some 3rd party games.

Hes not stupid, he realizes that Nintendo is doing a really bad job, developers too….. he realizes that Nintendo aka Wii U is in big trouble when it comes to multiplatform/3rd party games.

        I mean:

        1. For some ppl multiplayer is a selling point
        2. For some ppl the Wii U controller is a selling point
        3. For some ppl graphics are the selling point
        4. Some ppl want everything but you cant get always what you want
        5. ofc there are also many other selling points….

  4. im glad they added things to make up for the multiplayer, and add features to compliment the gamepad, but why take out multiplay in the first place? did they take it out because the wii u version could do actions not possible but other ports, thus making multiplayer unfair to other players? (non wii u version players) or is it because this is a (by my guess) a mature game and nintendo is a family company, so they want t avoid mulitplay where other plays of varying ages could curse at little children when they get a hold of it? or did they think not many people would buy the wii u version, making multiplayer useless with a small player base- so upon their assumption took it out and replaced it with something else to increase purchases and level out to other system versions?
i dont know much about the game, or plan to buy (i plan to get WWHD and other first party games) so i am only asking these questions to ask, not to change my decision on whether or not to buy

    1. hard to say…. maybe they just dont want to spend their time for putting multiplayer into the Wii U version. I mean, the launch price is the same and you know what that means…. less work = same/more money.

  5. nobody even gives a fucking shit about multiplayer in this kind of game anyway!! why the fuck play this shit online if you can play halo or battlefield!! example, AC series has online multiplayer but does anybody want it or play it?? no!! they just waste time making multiplayer in games that nobody plays anyway.

whole point, this version is missing that crap that nobody would be using, and its 10$ cheaper with gamepad uses in it also!! its fair. stop complaining about it. we all know it wont sell on wii u anyway. you stupid fanboys will find anything to complain about or damage control!!

    1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

True enough, the same could be said for Batman, It’s a 1 player game, does it really need MP?
There’s no guarantee that the MP is even going to be worth playing and if it turns out to be terrible, Wii U owners would have saved $10 by not having a useless feature included.

Blacklist, has MP included but I haven’t even been online with it yet, same with NFSMWU, do you really need online features?

MP automatically gets tacked on to a lot of games that don’t really need it,

    2. isnt thee gamepad a stoopid gimmick excuse to charge extra money to sell u another wii wit a u painted on it? get real no 1 cares 4 the ashtray, get rid of it

      1. Don’t you think they did that to every version?
All I can see we getting in trade, they slap off-tv play and maybe map or inventory on gamepad and call it a day.

  6. Makes sense i guess dont they have a time limit to finish the game? Maybe they thought story was more important than adding online fad.

  7. Well, then make a patch a few weeks after release :P That’s the great thing about indie games, they dont ‘run away’. Everybody who downloads the game has internet and can easily upgrade.

  8. “Thanks a lot for this question…” Lol We need online multi on a zombie survival game, I hope they’ll make a patch soon! Iceeczema, everyone does not play Halol, U know that? There is different people with different tastes and maybe they want online for their games.

    1. Its mostly due to the cost of maintaining server online. The audience isnt there and ultimately they arent going to keep paying to keep said server online so a few 100 people can play it. Its not a good business choice.

  9. First of all, i don’t even know why 14 year old Sony fanboys is posting here. (No, Xbox gamers is adults and never bother to post on a Nintendo site.)

Secondly, i’m surprised that 505 is releasing another game on Wii U, because they improved and degraded Sniper V2 at the same time which made it sell bad. Now they are doing the same mistake again.

      1. Does every sonyboy has a problem with reading or only you? Because I think you guys look very uneducated at most of the times.

    1. Yeah man, exactly, I feel like only sonyboys are making all of those holywars. And I mean it makes sense, Sony sells them a piece of hardware, backed by poor copies of big exclusive games of another developers, then they spend enough money on commercials, so little sonyboys won’t stop believing that killzone is an actual game, not just another shooter with poor universe and game mechanics. While there’s Halo, for example, as mentioned before, making killzone or resistance look like crap. Why would you even play those two, there is so many shooters that are multiplatform and they are better? Only if you’re a sonyslave. And there is limitless poor attempts to copy everything from everybody like playstation all stars battle royale or ps move, and since every sonyboy is close-minded like a dinosaur, they never test out other platforms or their games, they eat those poor imitations, burp and ask for more. They never knew the vast world of Hyrule. They never agree that a game can be hardcore if it’s too colorful. They praise one developer and shame him next day he stopped being exclusive. They’re just flaunting their ignorance to the left and right, thinking it would “change” or “expose” (i.e. turn you into another sonyzombie) someone.
      Please continue, I’m amused.

      1. This is from a Nintendo/Playstation fan. (I own a 360, but honestly could do without it)

You mean to tell me that Flower, Guacamelee, Okami, Sly, Uncharted, Sound Shapes, Ratchet and Clank, ect, ect, are all hated by the sonydrone because the games are colourful? GTFO, the worst fanboy is the one that knows nothing about the competition. Why do you think these sony “drones” acknowledged that Fez and Minecraft were great games, and demanded the game on PS consoles. Why do you think theyre coming to the system.

Its also all retarded fanboys that keep the flamewars going, who do you think still brings up the PSN hack controversy? Who started the whole PS3 has no games during its first 2 years? The whole indieSTATION 3? (I do like the 3rd one though lol) and if youre going to talk about ripping off dont ignore that EyeToy on steroids called the kinect, or 2nd screen experience enhancer that MS clearly stold from the Game pad.

    2. Ooh the irony, every time I go on live all I hear is kids yelling. “Nooob!” “Noob tube” or “wtf I got a hit marker!”

  10. This game will have an online pass for the other versions. That’s why the Wii U isn’t getting multiplayer.

These third companies who crap on the Wii U owners are stupid. Bottom line.

  11. Props to this guy. At least his team has respect for the Wii U, and don’t view it as an underling to the other consoles.

Translation: This game will only sell 5 copies on the baby Wii U console. For you to be able to play online this game all 5 of you who bought our game would have to get online at the same time. lolol

  13. Ig they cared they would make the multiplayer on wii U aswell. And still make use of the gamepad. This is like saying: “hey. You can now play with your game pad so we will remove online play for you guys”

I know it costs more to make use of it but doing something like this is never ever a smart move. It is always going to disappoint someone.

What do you think when you first read: “wii U won’t have online play”

    That sounds really bad.

    Then you read:

“Wii u won’t have online play but you can use your game pad to play it with”

    Dosent improve does it?

  14. Maybe the improved interface on the gamepad would have made it “unfair” for the other console-players to play against a WiiU player – similar to how having six displays hooked up gives you an advantage over players with a single display… or, maybe, it is as it has already been said and they just weren’t given enough time… truth is, they gave their “Official Response” to the question and will never tell us what really happened.
Oh yeah, and in response to somebody talking crap on Mac:
A couple of months ago, I read in an Associated Press story that Microsoft was in talks about possibly charging a monthly subscription fee for using Windows and adding Premium monthly charges for using Microsoft Office and other Microsoft products. Anyway, I’ve looked for that article using Google and can’t find it… maybe Microsoft had it taken down??? (Anyway, I read it on my Windows HP computer and have since purchased an iMac. I have been with Microsoft since DOS 5.55 and have been on the internet since 1995 but, I’m sure I will be called a “noob” or “newb” or however the person wants to spell it.) In any case, after E3 this year, I lost my respect for Microsoft and don’t care for the direction they are heading. I think we would be better off if Bill Gates would start running the company again. Why do I have to have a Gold account to watch Netflix on XBOX 360 – which I already pay for? I just watch Netflix on my Mac or PS3 or, when I have limited bandwidth, the Wii. If I wasn’t married and I didn’t have children, I would probably have built myself a Linux computer. However, I am enjoying OS X which kind of “feels” like Linux. (I know it is because OS X and Linux are based on Unix… and, yes, I know that Chrome OS is based on Unix as well. The thing I don’t like about Chrome OS is that you always have to have an internet connection to use it. Sometimes, I have problems with my Cox internet connection due to various situations.)

  15. What a load of bullshit. However, I’m still getting this game for the Wii U. As I’m not particularly interested in the multiplayer aspect. I’d rather them make a straight up multiplayer game, instead of tacking it on a single player game.
