Square Enix has confirmed today that its critically acclaimed Dragon Quest franchise will be coming to iOS and Android powered smartphones. Dragon Quest 1-8 will soon be appearing on mobile platforms. This suggests that the next Dragon Quest game might be exclusive to both tablet and smartphone devices.

I’m not surprised. They’ve been trying to break into that market since the early 2000’s. And their mobile games have always been ports of console games.

I have no inherent issue with mobile games. My main issue is when companies literally overlook handhelds and consoles so as to make a simple IOS port.
I haven’t much knowledge on programming, but why not release this on the VITA/3DS.
Simple they are lazy and don’t have vision. I would buy any of their ps1 and ps2 remakes on handhelds in a heart beat but they are realy stupid.

Because aside from DQ8 they’re all already on the 3DS in Japan, even 9’s available and still DS exclusive. I doubt that 8 will get a port itself to 3DS though, but might if there was demand.
In reference to the main article though what I really want to know is how this suggests anything about exclusivity in the future? All it suggests without trying to make up reasons is that SE thinks mobile platforms are popular enough to port their popular games to. Something we’ve all known for ages now. I’m also curious as to how this is even Nintendo related news.

I can see where Square is going at, at a business/marketing standpoint. As much as it kinda pains me to say this (I’m a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to gaming), Mobile Platforms (iOS, Android, Windows) are pretty much all the rage these days, considering the many uses the devices that run these platforms have. If Square’s going to continue to stay in the mobile market, they might want to think a little more on how they price their games. I have Final Fantasy 1-5 and Dimensions on iOS and they were pretty pricey when I got them.
FFI&FFII: $9 each
FFIII,FFIV,&FFV: $16 each
FF Dimensions: $20
Since most mobile games are free, or at most $2, Square should think to lessen how much they want to get for each download. Otherwise, this will not be a viable option for their money and for PR.

NtAgreed. Ever since Mobile Platforms have entered the scene, they have lowered the popularity of Handheld Platforms (3DS, PSP, & PSVita) by so much. I’m not to concerned about Home Platforms, considering they are still popular. Square has to realise that there are more options to utilize. Sure, Mobile Gaming is pretty popular today (don’t try to deny it, it’s beyond true), but, the way Square is appoaching the market is pretty much haphazardous. They need to plan a little more carefully if they want to stay. But, they should continue to make games for handheld platforms if things don’t go so well in the mobile market, since the handheld platforms still have a large userbase.

I don’t even want to call them Square enix, Square soft was such a good company and all their work was amazing until Enix came. The only thing that came out of Enix that was any good was KH, but even that’s getting stupid. FF started getting shitty once the good Devs of Square left. It’s a shell of it’s former self. I used to love them.

Dragon Quest came from Enix and Star Ocean. KH is just trash let’s not even mention it.
