Super Mario Galaxy Was Apparently Tested For Online Play Originally

A new interview by French gaming site Gamekult with developers from EAD Tokyo continues to reveal interesting bits of news. The latest is that the developers initially tested Super Mario Galaxy for online play, but ultimately decided the experience should remain unique to players’ living rooms.

The quote closely echoes a recent one by Miyamoto in which he explained the reasoning behind why Super Mario 3D World was never a candidate for online play. Much speculation has taken place over where the Mario series will be headed following 3D World, as some have called for an open world game, while others are hoping for a Galaxy sequel. For now, Nintendo fans will simply have to make due with the fun-filled four-player of Super Mario 3D World. Here is the full quote from EAD Tokyo about Super Mario Galaxy:

“We decided from the outset to be limited to local multiplayer. At the time of Super Mario Galaxy, we conducted tests for the online game and we have technical expertise to implement. However, we chose to focus on a user-friendly experience in the same room.”

  1. nice to hear the day an online mario game comes out will be nice :) but untill that day im enjoying local mario i honestly dont know what you can do with an online mario game

  2. What? This game would have been unreal if had some multiplayer capabilities like mario and luigi together in the perfect run….Impossible doesn’t even begin to describe how terrible that level was.

    1. The Nut Sack Strikes Back

The thought of that problem in Miyamoto’s mind was never an issue because he always considered his Japanese balls to be real friends.

  3. that sad :( at school all my freinds playing xbox or playstation and i get bullied lots for say i play nintendo. :'( if aske my bullies if they can to my house and play mario with me they hit me. i wish i had online so i wont get teased for liking mario

  4. I am getting really sick and tired of Nintendo telling me I can’t enjoy their games because I have no friends who want to play with me. Just admit you are too cheap to pay for it and stop making fun of people who have no friends or family that like nintendo games.

  5. Has anyone thought this game doesnt need online to be fun? Its not one of those games like mario kart, mh, smash or cod where its dependant on online. it doesnt even need multiplayer really, its just a nice extra feature, doubt its bought just for that.

    1. Ignoring online would increase sales. And even if the inline sucked it could be improved on next Mario game. It was stupid not to think in line for a 4 player 3D Mario game.

  6. amazing. they always have some stupid reason to not include online in their games and they actually believe gamers believe that shit.

    1. Because Nintendo is stupid Froxynd. They have the games to bloew PS4 ánd Xbone out the water but they aunt doing nothing.

  7. Nintendo keep doing their own shit like it was the 90s.

Lots of good games releasing and lacking on multiplayer. Party games, platform games, strategy games and still no multiplayer. Probably when the Wii Z comes up theyll be up w the competition.

  8. If Dumbtendo gave Galaxy online and even if it was horrible, it could have been improved for 3D Mario World. Dumbtendo.

  9. In about 2 or three years PS3 and 360 will probably be gone. And dumbtendo fails to realize the online advantage it could have against PS4 and Xbone but too stupid to realize Wii U’s free online gaming on AAA tittles can visit sales. But their too stupid to realize Wii U’s advantages. Did Dumbtendo even do research in PS4 and Xbone to focus on their weaknesses and put to Wii U’s streghs. Does Dumbtendo have a SWOT? And if so are they using it?

      1. Dumbtendo knew in 08′ Sony and Microsoft was using online and that their next gen consoles would continue using it.

      2. Ford and Chevy knows nothing about the 2015 Camry but they know it will be more fuel efficient and more features and horse power than current Camry. Nintendo is just too dumb to think stratigicly.

  10. It’s a shame that Nintendo is so anti-online, that’s one thing that the west values in their gaming experience. They can’t just rely on Miiverse for online experiences, their games need to create those experiences too.

    1. Thank you Bolt. Like I said didn’t Dumbtendo use a SWOT on PS4/Bone? The systems aint released and even I know their weaknesses are you have to pay for online yet Nintendo’s is still free. But they aren’t taking that as a strength for some dumb reason. Sony uses SWOt.

  11. I love Nintendo but they seem stuck in the past… Four player local multi-player was innovative, even revolutionary back in 1990’s with the Nintendo 64. The new and essential thing now in modern times is online multi-player. One of the biggest reasons the GameCube didn’t do so well was because of it’s almost complete lack of online (only 4 online-capable games were released). With the Wii, the feature was there, but they stupidly didn’t use it enough. Now with the Wii U, easily capable of giving players the best online experience on a Nintendo console so far, they STILL choose to largely ignore online multi-player. It’s ridiculous! I just don’t know what they’re thinking. They need to fully embrace online. I swear, Nintendo are their own worst enemy..
