Nintendo will add various warnings on its Wii Karaoke U title after a number of complaints were issued because of uncensored song lyrics. The title, which allows users to download tracks and sing as their chosen Mii’s, features a whole host of songs with the original unchanged lyrics. The company has stated that they will add appropriate warnings to the game’s eShop page, on purchasing an access token, as well as on the app itself. Nintendo has issued the statement below on behalf of the registered complaints.
“Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND is intended to provide users with access to a large catalogue of songs from a broad range of music labels across a variety of musical genres – designed to appeal to all music tastes. As such Nintendo does not restrict which songs are included in the catalogue of songs featured within the Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND application.
“We are aware that some songs contain explicit lyrics and deal with adult themes which some audiences may find unsuitable. As such the Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND application currently includes a notice which informs users that music downloads are not rated by PEGI. Wii U owners also have the tools to restrict access to the song catalogue using the Parental Controls feature (Online Interaction in Games). “It is however very important to us that all users of Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND understand that some lyrics contained within songs may not be suitable for all audiences and as such we will immediately be implementing an additional message within the Nintendo eShop (prior to downloading the application & ticket purchase) as well as on the Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND website pages. In the near future this message will also be incorporated within the notification that is displayed as the Wii Karaoke U by JOYSOUND application is launched.”

Dont understand why they just dont push game lyrics from an online source library. Then you could chose censored or uncensored. Give people a choice and bolster online understanding and strength at the same time! Parental controls lock explicit lyrics out, while older consumers can choose explicit if their heart desires. Sometimes, the best part of a song is when everyone chimes in for the f-bomb or whatever in college/adult crowds.
How about marketing another censored game as “Just for Kids: Karaoke U” I’m sure it would be a big seller, just as those terrible CD’s are. Parents with young children then have ease of mind.

I like their approach on this, giving people the right info to base there decisions upon. What would be a nice touch though is adding partial parental control based upon age ratings for each song individually.
The industry needs more ratings for this to happen. Right now it’s only “good for everyone” or “explicit music”. So unfortunately it couldn’t work that way. They either need to block all the explicit music, or allow it.

It’s the hardest, but most desirable solution to this kind of design challenges.
Or Nintendo could rate the music for themselves, but that’s probable not desirable.
