Wii U Estimated Lifetime Sales Lowered To 25 Million Units

DFC Intelligence is releasing a new forecast on December 3rd in which they predict that the Wii U will reach global lifetime sales of 25 million units, only a quarter of what the Wii has sold, which passed 100 million units worldwide as of this year. These numbers would put the system closer in lifetime sales to the Gamecube, which sold 22 million units during its lifetime. In response to questions about whether it was a right move for Nintendo to release three big holiday titles in the midst of next-gen system launches, analyst David Cole had this to say:

“I think Nintendo is carving out a different audience. I think that being said it is the right strategy. The audience they are going after is not the ones that Sony and Microsoft are going after. Right now they need to go after Nintendo fans first. They should have done that last year but better late than never. So in answer to your question it is the right approach but really Nintendo now is just trying to do as well as the GameCube so they have a base to sell first party software.”

Independent analyst Billy Pidgeon agreed and added some two cents of his own.

“For the bottom line, console launches drive hardware, software and accessories purchases not only for the new hardware but for older hardware as well. Value added bundling, price cuts and highly anticipated new software for older hardware can boost sales of older systems during a fourth quarter retail period with one or more new console launches. Xbox 360 made big gains in hardware and software in 2006 as Wii and PS3 launched, and PS2 made hardware gains and maintained relatively high attach rates in 2005-2006, particularly during Q4 when Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 launches were underway.”

One thing that will be interesting to observe this upcoming year is how the PS4 and the Xbox One do after the holidays. This is the first generation where game consoles are launching into a recession, and as gaming hardware and software become harder to afford, will it significantly affect the gaming market? Do you think that Nintendo is taking the right strategy with the Wii U, or is too little too late? With a very solid 2014 lineup, this holiday season may be just what the system needs to regain some of their momentum.

        1. I think the message is more about “Don’t rely on luck, make your own success” than “hope heaven randomly helps you”

      1. I don’t get what you mean by that? Wii U cake out before the other two consoles and they’ve only just come out. Nintendo’s newest AAA titles are coming so I cannot see how Wii U has failed. Are you forgetting its current max sales figures of approx 4 million? That’s not afaik in my opinion. I blame all the trolls and lack if 3rd party support for this.

    1. I do believe that, in the end, the WiiU will be one of those consoles that will offer lots of incredible games but not many people worldwide will have it, just like the Gamecube was…. I´m not sure if Nintendo is making the right strategy here, I do think that some games should have come sooner, but next year WiiU will be (actually, already is) by far the most affordable home console, the best deal for anyone getting a new device.PS4 and Xbox1 are sitting on the hype now, but the success of WiiU will depend on how long this hype will last. With those high prices, maybe WiiU will be a winner next year, maybe…..

            1. The Wii era will end with this Wii U, I’m not hating, Wii U is a great system to own, but this is the truth. I will have to wait 4-5 more years to see the birth of a new beauty.

I miss having a giant A button with a smaller B button right next to it. I also miss the X and Y buttons…And the amazing L and R shoulder buttons…
I miss everything about the GameCube’s controller :| Nintendo needs to make a GC controller for Wii U but change the C-stick to another analog and it’ll sell by the boatload.

                    1. Actually it us the other way around. Gamecube,n64 where very hardcore and it got few sales with the wii they went more mainstream and they had money wii u is a call back to hardcore and again we abandoned them.

                      1. This^ we abandoned the hardcore Nintendo and the only thing we can demand from them s that The console works properly.

                    1. I still think it´s too early to say…. Gamecube had an amazing library of games, while we still don´t know most of the current WiiU projects. We know that Miyamoto is working on a new IP, Retro is working on another game (besides DKCR:TF), There will be a crossover FE x SMT, a new Zelda game…..WiiU may end with an amazing library too

                        1. I was trying to be optimistic when I said my initial statement >.<

that and NintendoFan 64 and American was right when they said the Wii U can't hold up to the Gamecube.

                          Ah well I tried lol

        1. meh, as long as I get these great 1st party games and I can continue to play and finish my library of wii games I will be content. Honestly, will anyone’s life change if the Wii U sells 25 million or 70 million?

            1. why should it change?

that’s enough sales to turn a profit on the platform as a whole

it’s not gonna be a shitload of money like with the wii but it should suffice to keep the console going for a while

        2. Don’t blame Nintendo blame third party for leaving them twisting in the wind, although a handful of first party releases is always appreciated most by their fans.

        3. I think that the Wii U will do okay in the end.

And to those naysayers who think that Nintendo should scrap it, bear in mind that the Gamecube, as stated above, only sold 22 million in its lifetime, and yet Nintendo stuck with it for 6 years before discontinuing it.

I think that the Wii U and Gamecube are in the same boat. They’re both fine consoles with some high profile games, (or going to be in the Wii U’s case,) but neither selling that well due to poor marketing.

          1. They profited more from the GameCube era than Sony did from the ps2, they will be fine in the long even if Wii U doesn’t pick up. The 3ds is picking up steam and their first party software will rake it in. The 4 new street pass games on the 3ds brings in $4million a month alone for Nintendo.

          1. It’s been selling a lot better since the end of september, Wind Waker is still the number 1 seller on the eShop so people are buying consoles and SM3DW is doing very well regarding Amazon pre-orders..

Oh Yeah, Nintendo are also advertising the thing ; )

              1. lol you’re right.

months ago when people were calling for me to get banned, alba responded by saying i was his favorite or some gay shit like that.

i think the admins have just accepted that his is a troll site

        4. If this goes on, the Wii U will die. You fans always talk about how great Nintendo is. So if y’all really believe that, then watch what they will do.

        5. Nintendo definitely needs to fix their image if they want to get a wider audience. They don’t market as much as they need to and the marketing they have is horrible. seriously, their commercials are always so corny and lame that I’m surprised by even the few people who like them. If they had better ads that made the company and the console seem cooler then at least it will convince people to buy it.

Maybe next year when they have games like X, and bayonetta they’ll have marketing that’s more in line with making a cooler name for themselves and their products.

          1. Not to mention the severe lack of ads at all. They advertised the hell out of the wii, and look where it is! I’ve never seen one wii u commercial on my tv yet.

            1. exactly lol. Someone needs to get that trough nintendo’s thick skull.

by the way, are you “american” who used to spam wonderful on this site/

          1. It’s possible for them to sell more, they’re just not doing what they need to do to succeed at selling more.

        6. Its just sick how very few ppl know what wii u is really. 9/10 that i have asked if they are going to or have a wii u they ask me what it is. 1/10 of those don’t understand what the new “deal” is with it. And I try to explain how awesome the gaming experience is.. And when I tell them what it is 9/10 says that they want PS4. And 1/10 seems kinda interested and asks me when it is being released. :)

        7. only software can save this console now. everything it has going for it has been outdone by ms and sony. the games will dictate all. let’s just hope nintendo doesn’t go for casuals and their kids and actually go for the gamers.

          1. Where is star fox? Where is metroid? Kid Icarus should be on Wii U. New castlevania should be on Wii U. Maybe a new punch out? What about Waverace. F-Zero sounds good too. And I know this is the least probable, but a 3d sequel to Mother 3 on the Wii U would be great as well.

          2. A tad dramatic don’t you think? PS4 and Xbone have only just been released, I expect the PS4 to do well due to Sony’s marketing power, Sony could sell people a turd on a stick if they needed to. XBone though, I’m not so sure..
If things don’t change by this time next year then I’ll probably agree with you but at least wait until Nintendo get their franchises out first.

..and Nintendo already said that they are going for families over xmas and “Nu-Gamerz” next year, it was posted on this very site in fact,

              1. Yeah, Nintendo is going for families and casuals this holiday season. They said they have a big lineup of games for “highly skilled players” for next year. Basically, next year they’re targeting the so-called “hardcore”. I’m excited since there’s a few titles they have yet to announce, as well as the new IP Miyamoto has been working on.

          1. No need to get rid of them. They’re only one of the few who genuinely care about games. They just need to inject a fresh breed of influence.

        8. And here comes the crashing tide of reality on the poor souls who do not acknowledge it for the sake of their faith. Build your faith on stone, folks. Not sand. Geez.

        9. I love my Wii U. Either it sells a lot and becomes a huge hit and I’m happy, or it sells a little and I have a neat collectible and I’m happy. It’s a win win! :D

        10. As a Nintendo fan, I can’t hate this article. Everything they said is and will come true. Wii U won’t sell much but I will still be getting it. Probably near the end of its lifecycle.

          1. Wii U is not the most powerfull next gen console, but i can assure you that it’s hardware is more than adeguate for it’s pourposes, if well coded.
This is the bad: as ubisofts admits by itself, they don’t optimize their code at all.
Ask to an old amiga coder what does it mean to make a game. A good game is not made by graphics only. Today games are made by cut scens with some gameplay around, and this is true for all multiplatform games, for the wich microsoft and sony bumped in EIGHT GIGABYTE OF RAM in the next gen consoles.. frankly.. it’s near useless: a maximum of 4GB could have been enought for a good coder that know what optimization and compression means.
So why 8GB? Simple: ea, ubisoft etcc.. did put pressure on that.
I choose my console by first party games. Actually, the best first party games are on wii u. Games, not cut scenes.

            1. yes. developers will be wasting ram and abusing specs as much as possible, then they will knock to the wall that it also has a limit and will start optimizing it better. but 8gb is for the future, its for the years to come. in any case only 4-5gb from that 8 is available anyways

        11. The numbers for November haven’t been fully tabulated so why don’t we just wait andsee. As for the PS4 and XBOX One… We’ll see after Christmas when all the kiddies have opened their presents. :D

        12. All Nintendo has to do is stop making too many casual games and work and on starfox and Metroid and get off Wii Party U. Advertise it masculine and it will sell like COD ghost for PS4.

        13. Perhaps in the short run. But in the long run, these fools shall be proven wrong. And at least it won’t be the worst selling console Nintendo’s made…. Virtual boy(cough)

        14. Nintendo needs to seriously invest in making games. There is not enough games and not enough cutting edge games on the Wii U.

        15. Pingback: Según los analistas de DFC Intelligence, la esperanza de vida de Wii U está en 25 millones | www.nextn.net

        16. you can’t compare this shit to gamecube. gamecube was the most powerful console of the generation at that time, it had the most beautiful games running on it, and it was not for casual gamers. wii u is weak and nintendo is still trying to get grandmas to buy it with all their casual games lol

          1. Yes it was and that’s the reason Nintendo don’t do the most powerfull console in this age anymore. Nintendo gave you better games in gamecube than the original xbox combined and they majority did not sell. I bet you bough a gamecube when it was discontinued and used games.

        17. I think Nintendo should be happy with 25M at this point. I don´t really care as long as Nintendo sticks to Wii U and gives us great games.

The problem at first was a lack of marketing, people did not know there was a new Nintendo console and some people thought it was just a diffirent version. The biggest electronic store here (Iceland) has a label on their shelf that says something like this “The games in the blue cases are for the Nintendi Wii U system and won´t run on the Wii” so it´s clear that at least some people bought a Wii U game for their Wii´s

The current problem is these new commercials that are supposed to boost sales are so corny, these happy families smiling and laughing while playing Wii U don´t work.
Skip the acting, just have some gameplay footage, show some gamepad actions, have some jazzy tune in the background and then end it with a picture of Wii U and a price tag.

        18. I don’t believe that lowering the sales limit is damning the Wii U in fact there are a lot of reasons why any console wouldn’t sell well now

          1. its the biggest gaming recession yet
          2. Nintendo’s biggest rivals are releasing their consoles
          3. the console gaming is slowly being eaten by the phone and tablet game quick fixes

I haven’t lost faith in Wii U and I haven’t lost faith in Nintendo

        19. I do believe Nintendo’s success will depend on how terrible Sony and Microsoft (MS)doing. If MS change their strategy again and re-introduce the spy kinnect and other stuff players were angry about then yes Nintendo will do very well. Sony has also a DRM hidden somewhere. We know their RnD did some work on it and it’s a matter of time before they apply this DRM.. People were waiting for the Xboxone and the PS4 to come out an make a choice I still believe the Wii U has still a good chance to sell . Nintendo need more marketing(shift the fouc on the Wii U instead of the 3DS/2DS),increase the size of the HDD, reduce the price of the premium(£200),keep the price of the bundle, release a steady flow of software (1 big title per month), get rid off the basic pack and more presence in the store. That all they need to sell more units

        20. People keep on saying how terrible Sony and Mcrosoft are. If they are that bad why are their consoles selling?
