Nintendo Promises There Won’t Be A Wii U Software Drought In 2014

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has promised on GameTrailers that the Wii U won’t see the same kind of software drought that plagued the Wii U during the first half of 2013. Reggie admitted that Nintendo had made a mistake, but they hope to rectify that in 2014 with a steady flow of software for the format.

“The way we’re going to be different is, we’re gonna certainly have a steadier pace of games – both for Wii U and for 3DS.”

“The marketing activity is going to be constant throughout the entire year. You tease me a little bit that ‘boy the first half [of 2013] was a little quiet,’ and y’know what, you look back and it was. We’re not going to be making that same mistake in 2014.”

“So the pace, the ongoing activity, touching the consumer, and messaging what we’re all about. That’s going to be a big difference next year.”

  1. Honestly, if Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros are the only games that ome out next year, I would be satisfied.

But I’ll always pray for a new Starfox… Come on, Ninty. Make it happen!

    1. Donkey Kong, smash bro’s, mariokart, fire emblem x smt, yarn yoshi, projectcars, watchdog, X, and more unannounced game from Nintendo. 2014 will be a good wiiu year for sure!

              1. Dk and pikmin sure. And game and wario, and wii partyu, and wiifitu, and scribblenauts, and lego city. I believe w101 was supposed to hit earlier than it did, too.

            1. Monolith Soft would have to set a delay not Nintendo since Nintendo isn’t making X. The only Nintendo game I could see being delayed is Zelda HD, cause Nintendo pretty much delays every console Zelda game at least once lol.

      1. I think Miyamoto’s new IP won’t come in 2014. For me, it really seems like 2015 is where we will see their unannounced games come to life. Hopefully they give us a little bit of hint on the first Nintendo Direct next year.

    2. They should revive 4 nintendo franchises from the big 12 (Super Smash) F-Zero, Star Fox, Metroid and EarthBound (pokemon, mario, kirby, Legend of zelda and Donkey Kong deosnt need it they are always comming). Well one can dream – This is Gamer, Peace Out

      1. Metroid definitely needs to come back for several reasons:

        1. It could use the Gamepad in interesting, innovative ways (Scan Visor and Command Visor, anyone?)
        2. It’s a hardcore game that defies Nintendo’s “kiddy” image
        3. It’s a shooter, which is the single most popular genre in the industry right now

It baffles me why this isn’t one of the first games they came to when the Wii U was created, we could all be playing an epic Metroid Prime 4 or something right now.

          1. Which was quite possibly one of the dumbest moves ever as Donkey Kong is a pretty generic platformer and Tropical Freeze doesn’t really do anything innovative or exciting. Maybe if they took the gameplay in a completely different direction (platformer/beat em up game anyone?), I’d have been okay with it, but a vanilla Donkey Kong game doesn’t really help the Wii U’s library. Metroid would’ve been a much smarter choice.

              1. They had lots of ideas left for donkey kong country. They had 3 metroid games come out for wii and gamecube. Even great minds need a breather from franchises.

                1. Doesn’t really look like it. It’s basically DKCR with pointless flashy 2.5D sections and generic throwing mechanics. There’s nothing really new or fresh about the gameplay shown off, it’s basically the same game we played 2 years ago with different levels.

            1. I to was not pleased to see ANOTHER DK game. I hope Retro doesn’t fo 3 games of something before moving on every damn time. 3 Metroids, Another DK after Tropical Freeze then something else finally…I just wanted Starfox from Retro Studios.

              1. I think Nintendo needs to spread some of these games out to other devs, giving Retro responsibility for Metroid AND Donkey Kong AND Star Fox and God knows what else is kind of overwhelming.

            2. Donkey Kong sells better than Metroid. It was a business decision. And videogame is about money and business. They came first with the most business safe option: DK. They will work on a different Nintendo franchise, rest assured, but first they needed to play it safe

        1. One can only dream, i only bought my wii u at launch because i thought retro’s secret game was metroid prime 4, was so disappointed when i found out it was just donkey kong! even though i know it will be great, i would have preferred a metroid which would have obviously looked stunning since retro has awesome art teams!
And at the same time would have show everyone that wii u was clearly more powerful then PS3/360.

If it also would have had a fully fledged multi player with levelling up, customizing the armour suit, etc this alone would have enticed the shooter fans to wii u! sigh, i just hope retro are working on a prime game, no way they have spent the last 3 years working on a 2d donkey kong only!!!

          1. Rest assured that we will see a new Metroid game soon. It´s just that Metroid doesn´t sell as well as DK. Right now Nintendo needs games that sells, rather than games that get a high Metacritic score

        2. //It’s a hardcore game that defies Nintendo’s “kiddy” image//
I don’t mean to interject for a moment, but… how deep and challenging a game is and how it plays doesn’t reflect what it appears to be, whether it’s “kiddy” or mature-themed, for example the Kirby franchise.

    3. OMG, I wanted to say the same thing, too! Just give me 19 Mario Karts and 37 Smash Bros. and Ill be satisfied for the rest of Wii U’s lifespan! Please, Nintendo let it happen! My anus is ready.

      1. Donkey Kong, smash bro’s, mariokart, fire emblem x smt, yarn yoshi,X..never gonna be dominated, which game gonna do that?

            1. Nintendo is a business. They aren’t going to say “Sorry, the Wii U won’t have good games until late 2013, but buy it anyways!” Even with the drought, they knew they’d have great games at some point, and now they’re releasing amazing games every month. I’m sure Microsoft and Sony have had their fair share of lies.

      1. 1.) WiiU won’t make the same mistake the 3DS did in terms of lacking software.

2.) Release dates are a joke on every, last, fucking game.

3.) Giving a 2 yr, 20% discount for those who buy the deluxe edition, totally shafting the early adopters out of a year.

4.) Cutting all communication between adult gamers, via the shutdown of swapnote, flipnote, letterbox, and no PM on 3DS miiverse.

Early adopter? Shaft. Been with Nintendo forever? Shaft. Adult gamer? Shaft. It’s like they are trying to force a PS4 in my anus.

I’m ~this close~ to being like Ice on this site. I am now doing 90% of my gaming on the 3DS because I just couldn’t swallow another Mario, no matter how epic the reviews are.

On a positive note, Zelda, ALBW is just unbelievable. The graphics, sound, puzzles, story…it’s a work of art.

        1. Maybe you should leave and take a mini vacation from this site for awhile. Cause we sure as hell don’t need or want another Ice.

  2. Donkey kong is feb, march unknown, april maybe mario kart, may unknown, june….nintendo may reveal software dates in DEC or Jan

  3. I love Nintendo to dear, but what is this, like the third time now since the launch of the 3DS that they’ve apologized for a mistake and then promises it wouldn’t happen again? I’m all for admitting mistakes, but don’t keep making the same one! Remember when they said they wouldn’t have a repeat of the 3ds launch, and then the wii u launch was nearly identical in terms of software available? I just hope the wii u can turn around like the 3ds has…

  4. the 3DS doesn’t need any more help. it can be considered a juggernaut at this point. the Wii U needs their full attention.

    1. GBA games are way down on the list of things that can help the Wii U improve.

And I’d rather have them available on 3DS.

      1. But Nintendo promised GBA games on Wii U, overall though I think they’re sells improve if they add Game Cube games to the eShop, and bring back some old franchises like Star Fox for new WiiU games.

        1. GBA games on a home console is pretty stupid, but whatever. Gamecube games though, that needs to happen. Luigi’s Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Metroid Prime 1 and 2, all of those would be nice additions to the eShop.

  5. The Wii U’s gonna be fine. I don’t understand how people can’t get that through their thick skulls. Saying the Wii U’s doomed is like saying the PS4 is doomed.

  6. Hopefully this means that Smash Bros will be a 2014 title. Also hopefully we get X and Bayonetta 2. Maybe even that Yarn Yoshi game. I’m also thinking that Zelda U may be next yer also (for naysayers, it has been in development for a while now and remember Link Between Worlds was only announced this year and also released this year. So Zelda U being a 2014 title is entirely possible.)

    1. Agreed here somewhat, we’re definitely not seeing enough creativity in the Wii U’s lineup, but that seems more because the Wii U itself can’t really do much that other consoles don’t already do. Still, that doesn’t excuse the lack of creativity in the game concepts and the lack of usage from the Gamepad.

  7. I’ll give that a big fat ‘whatever.’ We all know whatever is planned for 2014 half of it will get delayed, while the other half will be games we expected this year and have already been delayed.

Sorry Reg, but your promise is as empty as the Wii U Library.

  8. Wii Fit U
    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
    Mario Kart 8
    Watch_Dogs
    FAST Racing NEO
    Bayonetta 2
    X (MonolithSoft)
Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem (ATLUS)
    Project CARS

    Updates on
    Yarn Yoshi
    The Legend of Zelda U

2914 is gonna be a huge year for Nintendo and the Wii U.

                      1. For fun. annoying the shit out of you is the catalyst for pure entertainment. i love watching your blood boil.

                        1. according to my readings, mister pinwheel, you are an angry little kid who wants to give heads to N-Dub Nation and Nintendo Commander. you are avoiding N-Dub’s question why are you here and change subject like an inferior fat and lazy oaf

                            1. I haven’t talked to tony in months and he’s still think about little old me. I think’s it fair to: MINDFUCK COMPLETE!

          1. Pinky Swear, Reggie?

Oh and if what Reggie says is true, then they must have a bucket load of games to announce at this coming E3, because they only have the spring covered for right now. They must have at least 5 more games coming for the Wii U at least that we know nothing about! :O

            1. I hope E3 brings us much more interesting games than we’ve been getting this last year, most of Nintendo’s games for the Wii U are a bit too rehashy.

          2. Well with Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros WiiU/3DS and Watch Dogs there better not be a drought lol. PS Nintendo please make some games for your older franchises like Star Fox in light of this no drought promise.

          3. Pingback: The Regginator Promises There Won’t be a Wii U Software Drought in 2014 | PLAYERESSENCE

          4. Reggie the liar has broken so many promises only gullible babies believe what he says lololol. Who cares if they have “new” games every month next year, we already know that they will only be baby games as Nintendo nowadays only makes rehash baby games. Baby game this, baby game that. Insert big list of baby games that only babies will get excited about, yawn. Omg another baby Mario game, omg! omg! omg!, more Pokemon!, omg! so excited for Yoshi, omg! omg! omg! babies can’t contain so much excitement for more baby games, get them some nappies.

            1. Katamari Degenerate… my sensor readings show that you are in an angry state while playing a baby game called Invisimals on your PS3 you are angry because Nintendo’s focus on family games for the holidays and selling like hotcakes Nintendo already had a new game called “The Wonderful 101” and you’re ignoring the fact that Nintendo are bringing FRANCHISE games for the Wii U like Donkey Kong Country, Super Smash Bros. and Fire Emblem (crossing over with ATLUS’ Shin Megami Tensei)

                      1. As you can see, the utterly enormous disposable waste cannot be flushed down the small sized tunnel of garbage…

                    1. We’d better be careful! The Nintendo fans on this site are mentally unstable. Our mindfuckery of them may just push them over the edge!

                                1. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. You’re saying that life is really tough on him, yet you said “Id like to push you over an edge”.

                                  You are being hypocritical.

                                2. -_- *facepalm* fine ill humour you, what part of me saying he is a whiny little bitch because life is probably a bully to him because of said bitchyness, and than me saying I wish I could push him off a cliff, what part of that can possibly be contradictory?

                                  1. Nah you were mad which is why you said you wanted to push him off a cliff. This isn’t the first time someone pissed you off. You got angry with you thought, iceazeama and myself. Before you say you weren’t mad at those times, your comments were full of profanity, and you were making fun of someone getting a disease, “rashboy” talk about being rude. And remember about a week ago there was a comment that stated “This video gave me cancer” followed by you saying “Maybe you deserve it” Don’t try to deny it. It’s obvious you get angered when someone says anything negative about Nintendo.

You were being a hypocrite because you said he had a tough life, yet you are the one that needs help. Need I say more?

                                  2. I can see you stick up for you little buddies, you obviously are blind to the whole story and yeah I swore at them but I wouldn’t say I was angry, id be angry with eczema, you thought and even you if I thought you were of a threat but no you all are not, Of course I stick up fpr Nintendo hence why I came to this site in the firstplace and of course my obvious username, seeing how you conveiniently didn’t read any of my previous encounters to a full extent, I can see you are the blind boy, always quick to jump to conclusions with out a seconds thought, pathetic…

                                    1. Lol these nintendo fanboys always think they’re so tough giving people all these eThug threats! But I’m actually scared of Tony knows that my real named is “Jay Neutron Williams”! Cause that’s totally my real name lol!

                        1. In a previous post, I said

“Instead of using money on video games, you should use your money on therapy you deluded freak.”

                          And you said

“Same for you, same for you.”

                          Care to explain your reasoning?

                    2. For Nintendo’s sake, I hope this is true. But it’s going to take a LOT to reel me back in. I’ve lost an overwhelming amount of interest in gaming this year. Even knowing there’s such cool games in stores right now (Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World, Zelda: ALBW etc.) doesn’t have me feeling too excited. But I blame that on my own personal life going to hell. Never have I felt worse, about everything.

                        1. everyone here should smoke weed and chill the fuck out :/ even though I say don’t do drugs lol people must chill out someway

                            1. Well if you’ve been alive as long as Nintendo and almost single-handedly save the industry we all know and love today, I’m not too worried about our uh “territory” by others. Nintendo has TOO much money in the bank that even if they fail the this and next-generations, they can still go full force

                              1. I know but we cannot tolerate the corruption of any territory no matter how small it is to these lesser beings…

We don’t want to end up like the Atarians or even worse, the Xbots…

                                1. You take this war-time stuff to heart…. im sold

PUT ME ON THE FRONT LINE SIR WITH THE GAMECUBE MARINES OUR BASS ABOUTT O BE BREACHED BY THE OG XBOTS, THEY HAVE A TANK NAMED HALO

                    3. How many times have we heard something similar to this from Nintendo?

No software drought… Yeah I’ll believe when I see it.

                    4. Fool me once, shame on you “We are not going to make the same mistake we did with the 3DS”, Fool me twice, shame on me “The Wii U price will not drop it’s price for years to come”. Excuse me if I do not want to be a fool this time.

                      1. April/May next year Nintendo will come out and tell us how sorry they are for the software drought on Wii U. I can already hear Iwata saying “we apologize” and “please understand”

                    5. This is what i want to hear From Nintendo and this pretty much proves that we have a voice, that Nintendo is listening to us. I really think that 2014 is the year of Wii U

                    6. Pingback: No 2014 Software Drought

                    7. i don’t believe in nintendo words anymore, they made alot of false promises and expect us to forgive them when they start apologizing.

                      1. I’ve heard its IP that hasn’t seen the light of day for while. I’ve heard star Fox ans i’ve heard its new ip. We just have to wait and see

                    8. They made a mistake all right. The mistake was they trusted 3rd parties to carry the Wii U for it’s first year (EA & Tecmo Koei come to mind.) Capcom helped a little with MH3U & RER, & Ubisoft helped with Assassin’s Creed 3, Zombie U, Assassin’s Creed 4, & Rayman Legends, which would have done better if they released it on time instead of delaying it for PS360. Sega helped a little with Sonic Lost World & the Mario and Sonic Olympic Winter Games; I would have loved to have given Aliens: Colonial Marines a try even if it wasn’t as good as that horrible trailer made it out to be since I’m a huge fan of the movies. Even indie 3rd parties helped.

                    9. Nintendo must keep the promise that they would end the drought next year 2014. I hope that the great gaming company would show us (the gamers) the biggest games ever.

                    11. All we know is coming is Smash Bros U, Mario Kart U, and Donkey Kong TF. They will be hits but Nintendo needs more. I like Wii Sports Club and Wii Fit U and I hope they expand on that.

                    12. You’ve said this before guys, I don’t think I believe you.

Anyway, I don’t think you’re going to impress many people with this lineup, you need to start doing more unique and innovative games. Right now it’s just tons of rehashes.

                    13. Next year, I will have Bayonetta 2, and I wont need another game.
But I hope they get more third parties to make multiplats for Wii U.
I enjoy playing with it more than on my PC.

                    14. I hope Nintendo bite as visciously as they bark. We’ve heard them apologize countless times before. I want a 3DS-like turn-around for the Wii U. Save this wonderful console!

                    15. No shit. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Yoshi Land U, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, X, Smash Bros, Zelda HD, Fire Emblem X SMT, Miyamoto’s new IP. Those are just the Nintendo IP’s we know about. There will be a few 3rd party to I guess. Watch Dogs, COD Ghosts 2 or COD Black Ops 3 or whatever the next one is lol. Assassins Creed 5. Though the only one we don’t know about and its the most important is Destiny. Wii U should do fine in 2014.

                    18. With essentially 8 confirmed games coming out next year and then plenty of unconfirmed games mentioned by Iwata, that’s pretty easy to say. And no, Nintendo isn’t gonna delay their games all the time like this year.

                    19. My Xbone will more than likely drought at some point next year, so Wii U will fill in my gap.., wait, not that, Nevermind.

I’m hoping for something really big at the end of the year.., maybe Zelda, a Mario rpg maybe? I think since Paper Mario went to 3ds, maybe a completely new more detailed looking game.

                    20. The Wii U should of released this month with every single Wii U title released so far available as A launch title. Would of been the best launch ever.

                    21. Looks like 2014 will be a great year for Wii U. It is a great that Nintendo acknowledges any mistakes and takes care of it right away. I do hope for increase in software for Wii U. I enjoy mine, but I want it to be one of the best Nintendo consoles. I hope the 3DS continues to do well, too.

                    22. Hope this doesn’t mean rushed games. I mean yes the Wii U needs more awesome titles but not at the cost of quality that we expect from a Nintendo game.
