This week’s Media Create sales charts are now in from Japan. The recently released Super Mario 3D World entered in the all-formats chart at number two, but was beaten to the number one position by Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3. The Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling format, however the Wii U continues to struggle as it only sold 21,002 units. Here’s the Japanese software and hardware charts.

Bad for the Wii U because it had a large release that should have moved more systems whereas the Vita didn’t have a major new release this week.
On the other hand, bad for Vita because it’s a handheld struggling in a region that is dominated by portable gaming devices.
Well there is two sides to every story. On one side you could point out that the Average Wii U sells in Japan has been around 8-9 K a week. so 21 K is a good week. (So is anything above that average) However on the other hand that is still not good but it is a improvement. In the end it really does not matter.. the Wii U is not going anywhere. The PS4 will dominate the gaming market and XBOX will still most likely be third at least in Japan this generation.

The Wii U’s install base is just over 1M in Japan so SM3DW is doing great and obviously will entice more people to pick up the system.
There’s now a steady stream of games coming out for the Wii U, Nintendo now need to drive up that install base.

pikmin sold 95,000 its first week. Mario usually stays more stable then pikmin and around the 20-25 dec in japan his sales jump

why are u typing in all caps? Mario has a different since of balance then pikmin. Pikmin has a small following, compared to mario. Japan is in a different setting with consoles then the US. I don’t think the ps4 will do that great in japan either. 3ds and vita will out sale both the

Ignoring Wii u price cut got Wii U above 10k so 3D World did less consoles but Pikmin 3 got it from 2k to 8k. So the bundle and price cut kept Wii u from 2k a month.

well the hand market in market is true ds sold 32 million, psp 20, million. wii 12 million, and ps3 11 million compared to the US market its a huge difference. I have friend a japan and he told me people in japan don’t always have the time to play consoles at home as much because of the work economy there. Handhelds gve them the experience on the go. He told me most adult business men or adult workers have hand handhelds. He doesn’t have a wii or ps3, only a psp ,and 3ds(currently saving for vita). As for mario the last true console mario launch was N64 and mario was pushing sells by himself there for months. only sold around 160,000 i believe but he did reach to masses, snes and nes had mario as a packin so his sales were combine with both console (not sure if he was in japan). Later years other games had to push sales for mario so he could do well. wii sports pushed the wii install base for mario and gamecube setting pushed it for mario. 3D world did what what I expected to do. The wii u install in japan is low compared to wii’s. Now do i expect the wii u to be number 1…no I expect it to do better then xbone I think most people want it because it could be the push to kill off microsoft and doesn’t want those a holes dead.

So did the PS3 which only became profitable in 2011, we can’t call anything dead now because we simply DON’T know because if history repeats itself, the Wii U will pick up and Nintendo will be just fine. Besides has Mario always been steady in Japan, and this game also had like 2-3 days of being on sale so 100,000 for a few days is nice. So I am confident the Wii U will stay steady and this game will sell well but I don’t know about all the stuff Reggie said like Mario Kart 8 selling more than MKWii and them reaching like 9 million for this holiday season.

The Vita outsold the Wii U by 38 units. Yeah, definite outsell there. Look at the amount of sales for Pokémon X and Y in Japan alone. They outsell both the Xbox One & The PS4 in terms of combined sales to this Thursday. Can you tell what it is yet?
Anyway, the Japanese love their RPGs, so Mario debuting at Number 2 isn’t a bad thing. Hell, was it bad when Animal Crossing New Leaf held its own against The Last of Us out here in the West, and even worse when it outsold it for a period of time (see UK charts)? No, not at all.

Well there just went any hope of anymore third party support. Now they will just flock to PS4 and Xbox One and leave the Wii U to whither and die all on it’s own. 2D Mario definatly seems to be more popular in Japan than 3D Mario, they are still good numbers considering. I looked on VGChartz (no idea how reliable they are) and they stated that NSMB Wii (over 900k) outsold both Galaxy Games (as stated above) on the first 3 days of release. NSMBU (over 160k) had outsold SM3DW by half in their 1st 3 days.
Over 260k for Galaxy 1 and 300k for Galaxy 2.

Well, for a Final Fantasy game and from a console that has sold A LOT MORE THAN THE WII U ALREADY, I think Final Fantasy did worst than Mario, the Wii U has sold like shit in Japan, and the game managed to be at number 2, while the Final Fantasy game, which Japan goes crazy for, in a console that has been out since 2006, it sold just a little bit more. So it’s just the number 2 that has people going NINTENDO IS DOOMED!
Oh, and Wii U is the best selling home console right now in Japan, it will be hard to outsell the handhelds.
