This week’s Media Create sales revealed that Super Mario 3D World sold just under 100k, whereas Famitsu sales recorded just under 107k. Despite glowing reviews from the critics, the game has seen the lowest debut sales for a 3D Mario game on Nintendo’s consoles.
However, there are some positives to glean from this information as the Wii U has, at the moment, a low install base, plus Super Mario 3D World should continuously sell well on the system. Here’s a comparison to previous 3D Mario games and their first week sales – asterisked titles equates to a launch game and figures in parentheses are total game sales to date.

You are forgetting that this is solid state memory, therefore it is far more expensive and faster than a hard drive. Solid states are just memory which fast read/write speeds. A hard drive is limited. I my view, Sony and MS have screwed up their consoles.
Anubis are you retarded?, what’s the point on the 500gb disc if the game weights 50 gigs? thats about 10 games, and the insallation is mandatory, and ps4 doesn’t support external drive, and xbox one neither on launch, those consoles will be so full in so little time that either you delete your games or buy an HDD, with specifications, no thicker than 9.5mm and sata2 , i got a busted laptop and i extracted the HDD and bought a case for like 20 bucks, and that’s it, i got a 500 gb HDD for 20 bucks, so enjoy your 500 GB of space, o wait 400 because the ps4 got like 90 gigs reserved for firmware apps and stuff like that
Truth be told whats even the point in complaining about the wii u’s small hardrive space, it’s small to keep the price down and it’s not like people can’t just, I don’t, buy an external memory for the console! Not everyone wants to pay out for a 500 gig hardrive when not everyone prefers digital to retail, and even then nintys method is much better then microsofts who force you to buy only their hard drives.
As for the actual story I thought about it for a bit and it makes sense the wii u has a much lower install base then both the xbox and ps3 so it’s bound to undersell for a while, i’m really hoping it turns around though, theres some fantastic games that’ve come out for wii u so far and it’s a shame to see them go unnoticed.

Market shows that 6 out of 10 people that own Nintendo consoles buy Nintendo games. and Miiverse shows 40k for 3d World after a week. And miiverse is usually about 4 times lower than actual sales. So I would guess about 150 – 180k copies from release date until now in the US.
But none of that matters it is only about moving consoles now, because if they don’t get it to around 7 – 8 mill before the end of the holiday its over.

I hate seeing this. Anyone who knows me on here knows I always come to hate on Wii U on here… But hear me out. I give them flack cause I hate seeing them decay. I love Nintendo. I grew up with them. I waited 13 hours in line for a Wii and GameCube is my all time favorite system. With that being said, Wii U was a stupid decision from the very beginning. I always said that. Choosing to go the easy route and only making it slightly more powerful than a PS3 was absolutely ignorant. I’m one who chooses graphics over gameplay, but that move pretty much sealed their fate as far as 3rd party support with the generation. No 3rd party companies are gonna develop 2 of the same game to run on a different engine just to put it on a Nintendo console. Even though people argue this, I think Wii U would be faring so much better had it had been given a different name. No one would have thought it was a simple Wii peripheral had it been named the Nintendo Escape or some other name and had on the box “compatible with all Wii games and accessories. Anyone who says “this is no big deal” is pure ignorant. GameCube wasn’t doing too hot at all the time when Sunshine came out and it still rounded some great sales. Call me a Nintendo hater (which is so far from the truth) but I dont see how if Nintendo’s number 1 game fails to boost Wii U, anything can.

I agree with most of your points but 1. A different engine is not required to play a game on WiiU VS XboxOne/PS4. Almost alp graphics engines now are scalable. Need For Speed rivals is a good example. Its running on EA’s new Frostbite 3 engine and is running on XboxOne/PS4/360/PS3

Well, Japan is handheld territory now. I’ll wait for the worldwide figures before I pass final judgement on if the Wii U can’t be “saved”. Who knows, maybe the Wii U could pick up much better everywhere else than in Japan.
It’s almost Christmas …. It is highly probable that parents are waiting to give this as a gift. So I don’t really take much stake in preliminary data for this or any game this time of year till after the holiday season.

This is a little disappointing but I cannot say I am surprised all that much. I bought it and am really enjoying it, but Nintendo seems to be doing almost the same exact formula as they did to get the 3ds rolling in 2011. From E3 I didn’t agree with it but I understood it. The difference IMO with 3D Land selling so well and 3D World is the fact that 3D Land was new in a way that a handheld has never seen before. Outside of Mario 64 DS we have never seen a 3d mario game on a handheld. This and Mario Kart 7 releasing not even a month later would totally drive sales for a holiday season. 3D World on the other hand, despite the multiplayer aspect, is basically a direct sequel to 3D Land, a formula that may work but not as well as it should on a console. For a next gen system they should have been more ambitious to give us something different that tells us if you want to see mario this way you need a wii u. Going back to 64 style sequel would have brought back a lot of fans where as I felt like many people have nintendo completely off of their radar and had no idea this game was even coming out. I love my wii u and this paired with Pikmin, Wonderful 101, and Windwaker, I know that it doesn’t get the amount of credit it deserves… but at the same time I totally get why it isnt selling. The future still looks promising and I am excited for what will come out next year with Donkey Kong, Yarn Yoshi,(I dont care if nobody else is excited for this, I am lol) Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Bayonetta, X, Zelda HD and the new franchises that seemed to be teased recently. I just hope others will as well so we don’t see the failure that everyone else expects anymore.

2) Can’t even put into order, from highest to lowest, the games by their sales total. When has 337,000 been higher than 344,000?
3) Digital sales are a real thing now, whether people agree/disagree/see the point on Wii U, they need to be taken into account. As you can’t add their total yet, don’t make judgements and adjust language used appropriately.
4) Define a ‘week’. What days were the games released and therefore how may days count towards the sales figures respectively? Can’t compare say, if 3D world is 2 days of sales to another Mario title that is over 4 days.
5) Install base of each console at time of game launch would be an interesting side note, again to aid comparisons.
6) Doom and gloom; we’re all sick of it now thanks!

I don’t see the problem here. Are digital sale counted? Even so, I still don’t see the problem. Hell it sold to 10% of the install base. That’s like a PS3 game selling 8 million the first week.
Digital sales don’t count and when you consider that Nintendo has reported that their digital service is in fact booming, then these sales figures tend to be as about as reliable as a “plumber’s estimate”…
Honestly, I question the authors of articles on this site. We trust you to give us NEWS, not inaccurate doom articles. You need to work on that.
First of all, this does not take into account that the Wii U has a very small install base at this moment. That in itself could explain the “low” numbers. Also, the numbers don’t account for digital sales which more than likely double this figure.

The only way that I can see some doom is if Mario dosnt break the million sales mark in his lifetime and the only think that it will be doom is the 3d world/ land gameplay stile.
Nintendo is going to realize, soon, that launching a console and neglecting it for nearly a year has irreversible, devastating effects.
and maybe Nintendo should conduct a poll to see how many WiiU owners went out and bought a hard drive? Some people scrape and save for a console and don’t have money to just turn around and upgrade it.
At this point, I don’t care about stats. WiiU is going to take a chunk of that deep wallet everyone claims Nintendo has. They cannot afford a serious cluster fuck like this again. What’s REALLY sad, is I think the console would have done great if it were called something different, and more importantly, had FIRST-FUCKING-PARTY support from day one. You know, to build an install base for 3rd party and get people hyped?
It’s obvious Nintendo has:
1. Taken on baby sitting. No longer trying to appeal to adults in an effort to take sole responsibility from parents to watch their kids.
2. we won’t see a hardcore machine ever again.
3. An undisputable talent to build handheld software and hardware.
I would live to see Nintendo focus on building a large handheld, an HD 3DS beast, that can output 1080p graphics to a TV so someone can use the TV as an upper screen, OR the unit’s 3D display as an upper screen.
Alas, I dream. I’ll just keep chugging away on Mass Effect, Pirates and COD Extinction until MK and X come out. I hope Nintendo continues with the game pad when they build their next system. I absolutely love off tv play. I hope it’s not trashed next, next Gen.

Now, again, as I said before, if they get off their asses and support their own machine from day one, show people what it can do, maybe they don’t NEED a power-box. He is 61 years old now, and he’s still got his magical touch. Nintendo are far better than Sega as they’ve made far more hardware are far better games. It’s obviously because the fact that little amount of people own a Wii U, the higher amount people have bought a console the higher the sales will be, after selling 100k is a lot which means that at least half of those are new users buying the wii u for first time which should make wii u owners happy (because it means sales are getting better)
Guys relax, the fact that 3D world sold that many units with a instsll base of like a 1.5 million is good. Japanese gamers are slowly forgetting consoles, Mario tends to sell well overtime and christmas is coming. Its not the end of the world take a chill pill.

I still don’t believe the Wii U is doomed. The 8th generation started with Wii U in November 2012, and will most likely end in 2018-2020. That gives the Wii U plenty of time to sell above 30 million units, Could possibly sell as much as 60 if Nintendo draws all their cards. Be positive Nintendo fans :)

I love the Wii U James. I have had mine since launch. Initially I was having second thoughts, but until I heard what great games were coming out and read about the hardware and read what it can really do, I thought the complete opposite. It’s a very good, innovative and next gen console.
Nintendo will need to figure out how to utilize the gamepad in their games first, so that they can reach their goal.

this is after 4 days the other games had 7 also take into consideration digital sales they have around 10 to 20k apparently so it wont be bottom by the end of the 7day sales i bet. also i reckon this will sell well across the globe

Interesting how Wii U is gig efficient yet PS4 is a gig guzzler. How is it 3D Worlds visuals looks better than Knack’s but uses way less gigs to DL? Pikmin 3 uses 3080mb to download.

Wow alllllll those101peopland graphics and it’s only 10gig file size? Yet knack’s grwphics looks no etter and nearly 40gigs. So if you have 500gig hard drive you can download like 11games. And when pS4 and Xbone gets updates as well maybe less games will be on those systems. How is a more graphically 3D Mario Worluses less than 2gigs bt knack is 37gigs?
Actually Wii U is a power efficient console and has code efficient hardware. PowerPC, 32Mb of super quick eDRAM, all components close together and a stage 4 pipeline make it far quicker at processing code than PS4’s x86 CPU.
When learned correctly and all hardware is used properly, then it can make some impressive games. Right now it’s just getting ports and not taking advantage of the hardware – that is why 360 and PS3 games looks better because it’s using old code – you simply cannot do that.

Pikmin 3’s graphics out does knacks yet not even one gig to download. Knack is nearly 40 gigs. That’s a lot of stress on PS4’s CPU.

you can easily bring any CPU or GPU to their knees with a couple thousand lines of code or less (i.e. a couple KB of data) so no, size alone is not it
what stresses CPU and GPU in that regard is the number of assets and effects that have to be rendered on screen at the same time
You’re forgetting that its about the GPGPUs this time and not the CPU. The CPU should only be processing the programming and coding of the games. The GPGPU should be doing the AI, physics, HD rendering and the rest of it, meaning all components should be doing their jobs on their own.
Whats funny is, the Wii U is the most talked about technology than any sYstem on sale. There is something mysterious about the Wii U doing 4k to 8k textures. How is it doing that?
that’s just the resolution of the textures it has nothing to do with screen output.. nothing spectacular
4K to 8K textures should become standard with the new consoles, have been a while for PC games
the CPU is also handling various rendering tasks such as culling and draw calls
even a GPGPU isn’t an autonomous processor it still requires instructions from the CPU
AI will most likely also be handled by the CPU not the GPU since parallel implementation of game AI agents is fairly difficult
Has anybody mentioned that while it sold ONLY 100k in it’s first week in Japan, that it was still the #2 selling game in Japan? Obviously, there are other factors in this, and it’s not a poor selling game, when it’s the #2 selling game in the country.

Im happy for some reason. Hopefuly nintendo realizes that we are tired of mario and they need new ip to attract teenagers and adults not just kids.
2D Mario definatly seems to be more popular in Japan than 3D Mario, they are still good numbers considering. I looked on VGChartz (no idea how reliable they are) and they stated that NSMB Wii (over 900k) outsold both Galaxy Games (as stated above) on the first 3 days of release.
Forgot to add that NSMBU (over 160k) had outsold SM3DW by half in their 1st 3 days.
Plus neither N64, GC or Wii came with Bundles like a Mario game or Wii Party U or whatever else. So they may be saving on 3D Mario World when they get paid. If many bought the WWHD bundle they will wait for another Wii U game.
Wii u will have the same fate as the GameCube, great games but will not sell as well as the others. With that said it doesn’t mean it’s doomed or that is sucks just because it’s not popular.

So, gamers who just want to play real games and have fun, they bought a Wii U but since there wasn’t a huge excitement over it, many are buying the others consoles now. The rest of the trolls just buy PS4’s or Xbox Ones to shoot at people and troll more. And it’s obvious Mario is going to sell poorly in a console that’s selling low. If Nintendo survived with the GameCube for 6 years, they can do it with the Wii U.
I work in a gym and am currently teaching a class of bunch of 10-12 year old boys and all of them play either CoD or Battlefield and i heard one of them claim that GTA V was the greatest game ever made.
I haven´t asked them how they like Mario but i am willing to bet that they all consider him too childish and gay.

Gee, could it be because the Wii U’s install base is incredibly low? Could it also be because visually, 3D World doesn’t look a whole lot better than Galaxy when you compare the transition from Sunshine -> Galaxy.
Super Mario 64 at 162k is NA and Japan together.they released 3D Mario in 2 days sold 243k.
Why is no one talking about the USA sales figures from November 23rd? Figures say it sold approximately 250k in one day.
i bought the game and was immediately disgusted what a very sloppy 3ds port they released as their self-proclaimed systemseller. the graphical artifacts around the sprites are one ugly mess. i don’t know how human beings can get like that but at nintendo they lost any scruples it seems. releasing such an unispired rehash is a low point even for them.
