Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils Aime confirmed today that Cranky Kong will be making an appearance in Retro Studios latest title, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. The news leaked a couple of days ago that Cranky Kong would be playable in the game. The leak came from Amazon Italy who posted the official box-art which featured Cranky Kong on the cover.

I would like Nintendo to give up the goods as much as the next person would, but the VGX is not exactly the biggest venue to show off anything significant. I will not argue that sometimes Nintendo’s logic may seem flawed, but it would a worse decision jump the gun and overlook what is coming out in the foreseeable future – especially since DK is quite capable of moving a few units on it’s own merits even if they may not be as large as the Smash Bros. franchise.
I think we hyped it a lot, and imagined games we want to see just to feel Nintendo is listening to us. Maybe they need to come to the internet and see people don’t wanna see these kind of news and want to see new games. If it is already leaked why confirm a character no one cares about in an awful way. The bad thing is that this is a game we already know of, but why people are getting so hateful towards Donkey Kong? The first one Retro made got 90s all over the place, and I don’t know why people don’t want this.
Also, Donkey Kong was right there besides F-Zero and Mario when the 64 came out, I don’t know why the hate, lots of Nintendo fans love it, but I guess Nintendo fans are just drooling for some more mature titles on the Wii U, and I can’t blame them. The hype didn’t just come out of NOWHERE. Reggie Hype Train was the one who used the “previously announced title news” to make it seem like something worthwhile was being shown. And all they showed was what we could have easily seen on a website like…My Nintendo News!

They actually pestered Reggie for more news than just DK and he looked nervous as hell asking “what more do you want?” Also he was wearing a Metroid pin and had a guy from Retro with him. Geoff also asked the Retro guy when they would go back to Metroid and if they had two teams now. He of course didn’t answer with anything meaningful.
Very expected. The gameplay of Cranky was not as fun as I expected either. Still, this is one of my most anticipated games of 2014. But yeah… kind of disappointed this actually was the news :/ Would’ve been better not to be there than showing something that isn’t as exciting as other reveals. Well well. Still a lot of good things to come for Wii U in 2014 that’s already revealed.

I just watched it live. My thoughts:
1) Reggie called the inclusion of Kranky Kong “innovative.”
2) The host didn’t give a crap about Donkey Kong and he didn’t try to hide it. He kept asking Reggie if there was a Metroid game in development, especially since Reggie was wearing a SAMUS PIN ON HIS SUIT.
3) Reggie and the dev continued to deny them answers. Wouldn’t hint at anything Metroid-related, didn’t say anything about Zelda, refused to say whether or not there was a second team in Retro Studios.
4) Reggie said, “You guys are going off the prompters! We just gave you the RELEASE DATE for Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze! What more do you want?!”

Yes…I know…it’s really sad. Cranky Kong was spoiled (and it’s not really a BIG REVEAL anyway) and they only give us a stupid release date for a game that should have come out this month. Meanwhile, other developers are showing off worldwide reveals of popular franchises.

To be fair, there’s a time and a place for these types of reveals, and it’s not here and now. Developers don’t want to feel pressured to show off new games, they want to wait until the game is far enough along in development to show it off and pick a good time for the game’s reveal to be impactful. So that’s kind of rude of Geoff to do that. The only other time I can consider that acceptable is an interview.
I know now wasn’t the time to reveal anything Metroid. However, I think if they weren’t revealing DK:TF, Metroid would be appropriate.
Since Cranky Kong was spoiled early, Reggie should have revealed something Smash Bros. related or ANYTHING really. This was just one big disappointment.

Well, it was disappointing that it was spoiled, but man, they just didn’t do a very good job at all describing the game, the gamepad use besides off TV play (very unlikely it makes any real use of it anyway) or Cranky’s abilities. I can’t imagine, even on live stream, it would be hard to say “Cranky uses his cane for most of his move set. It gives him and DK when attached, a high jump, allows him to defeat enemies and jump on areas the others characters can’t, opening up new paths and tactics, and his secondary attack is a _____ gun that shoots _____ to stun or defeat enemies.” instead of kind of stumbling through it. (couldn’t tell what his gun was shooting TBH) The hosts even gave them a chance to reveal something, ANYTHING else exciting, and Nintendo didn’t have anything. You’d think they’d have come up with something on the fly, maybe something Smash Bros related, in a hurry, after the box art spoiler came out. A screenshot of a character that was set to be revealed soon anyway, or something.
I know that in reality, DKC:TF is a “hardcore” game for “hardcore” gamers, which is why they decided to showcase it. That said, those fake ass “hardcore” (ie FPS fans) gamers, only see this game as childish garbage. I completely understand wanting to hype an upcoming game, makes sense for the business, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t have had more Bayonetta 2 footage, or “X” footage, something that will draw the eyes of those violence/graphics whores (not that DKC:TF isn’t absolutely gorgeous) and make them think a little harder about getting a Wii U.
That said, it looks like this game is going to be absolutely stellar, much, much better than DKCR in terms of variety of gameplay and level design. It should move some Wii U units to be sure.

I don’t think the Wii U failing is an absolute certainty at this point, but here’s some very good reasons why it’s a distinct possibility:
1. Too few third party games
2. Too few games that use the Gamepad for interesting gameplay mechanics
3. Too many rehashes of previous games
4. Lack of real hardcore games
5. Bad advertising
Obviously most of this could change with the right game announcements, but in general it seems so far that Nintendo is absolutely clueless about what kinds of games would help sell this system and if they keep releasing the same kinds of games this entire generation, gamers will continue to be uninterested.

4) Lack of games (although that might change next year)

True, Nintendo’s not the only ones to fail to show interesting gameplay, it’s an industry wide problem. But it’s especially disappointing in Nintendo’s case because traditionally, they’ve been very good at coming up with unique, innovative gameplay. None, third parties don’t like the Wii U.
Mainly because they’re beyond fucking lazy to port games through different coding and wanna use “install base/hardware/sales” as their only weakest excuses to provide support which never stopped them when Wii was around or when PS3 did use PowerPC with Cell Processor itself and that they once complained the same BS for PS3’s “coding”.
Look at the DS/3DS. Its on fire with tremendous sales and success but do you see any truck load of third parties coming for that platform? Nope but rather go for the Vita which compare to the PSP, its performance is just plainly pathetic.

This is so dumb. It’s like they don’t know the audience of this type of show. Seriously, they could have saved this announcement for nintendo direct, it’s not a big deal and not something the hardcore audience would care about. If they showed a new trailer of X at least then they would be showing something that could appeal the the hardcore audience a lot more. It wouldn’t even have been that hard, they already had a trailer like a year ago and another one on e3, they could have teased the story or the characters or the world of that game and announce a release date, they must be close to an idea of when it’ll be released, even if they lie and push back the date, at least get the people who could be interested in the game be aware of its existence!!

Other things they could have announced: Zelda U information, not necessarily a trailer, but they should have some concepts and concept art to show! Or a trailer of smash bros. including a brand new character reveal, big events like VGX seems like good time to reveal a new character, and announce a release date, for that game too should be far enough in development to know it can be released! Or more news about Bayonetta! Hell, those are games that could appeal to the audience that would be watching the show!

Totally called this. I want a hardcore game as much as the next guy, but I don’t think we’re going to get anything exciting for a while, at the very least, not until after Christmas.
Still though, Tropical Freeze is a very disappointing game and quite possibly the worst choice to appeal to hardcore gamers.
But they already had 2 trailers for X since e3, with the first being released months before that!! They could have released another trailer, they had more than enough time to prepare atleast that, or even a newcommer for smash bros would be cool!

The only Game of the year nominees you can play on the Wii U is Super Mario 3D world. If you want to play all the games your friends are playing, you have to get one of the other consoles. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze was announced two years ago when they anounced the Wii U, to go to VGX with a game announced over 2 years ago is boring.
Um, what? Tropical Freeze was announced at E3 2013.

For those of you who are disappointing, don’t be. I had around 3 hours watching the awards and anything that Nintendo would have show up would not be worth it. The VGX was horrible.
In retrospect, that show was so awful that it didn’t deserve Zelda. I’d much rather have it revealed in a Direct or at E3 in front of a large crowd rather than in front of cynical Geoff Keighley. This crap show wasn’t worth Nintendo’s finest…
In front of “cynical” Geoff Keighley is EXACTLY where it needs to be. Nintendo loyalist, fanboys, and cultists are going to tout it’s brilliance no matter what they show or when they show it or where they show it. They don’t need to be convicned to buy a Wii U. They already have one.
The audience at the VGX awards are full of the people whom are NOT interested in Nintendo and by and large do NOT own a Wii U. This is where you show theme why the Wii U should appeal to them and Donkey Kong Country is NOT the answer. Had they of shown Zelda, Metroid, or Starfox, what could Geoff Keighley say in cynicism? Nothing. He would have to give Nintendo props in front of 8 million viewers. The crowd would have gone bananas and the net would be viral with Zelda news.

after the desapoiment of vgx 2013 i just saw a comercial of the wii u for the first time in my country (Peru), it give me hope in the console.

You know, I support Nintendo, but WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK? Right in the midst of the Christmas shopping season, they have a chance to show off a new Zelda or Metroid or something, and instead all the buildup about Reggie being at these awards leads to the announcement of a playable character in DK.
I hate to say it, but Nintendo is fucking retarded sometimes. They just fucked themselves in the ass, had they shown a new Zelda or something, they could have generated millions of system sales, but instead they announced Cranky Fucking Kong, like anybody gives a shit.

I’m actually happy about Cranky Kong, and am looking forward to the game, but I still think the vgx awards was a terrible place for that announcement, and like you said, should have been Zelda or something else.

We have to admit if Nintendo says they are gonna announce something we have to stop saying they;ll announce the best game ever.
This game comes out in 2 months so they see it as a good idea to promote it, but going to an awards show just to say a monkey is playable in a game is stupid, they also should’ve seen it was leaked and yes, confirm it, but then also give something new that wasn’t leaked.
Again, did we hear amazing announcement from the other two companies? No.
Nintendo can give us a Direct before Christmas and show Zelda Wii U, then a lot of people will see that Direct and see lots of other Nintendo content too, better for them.
Also, I don’t know t he hate for Donkey Kong, the first one was getting 90s all over the place and it’s made by Retro and I know Nintendo fans want something mature to hit the console, but we don’t have to hate Donkey Kong for it, he’s a classic too.
Oh, btw, everyone on IGN is saying the show sucked and was 3 painful hours long. So, why should Nintendo announce something so huge in such a shitty show?

Personally, I think that Iwata is more to blame than Reggie. Not that I am trying to defend him or anything, I just think that Reggie doesn’t have much say in the decisions. I think he is more of a puppet than anything.
