Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has honored the ‘fantastic launches’ of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Speaking during the VGX award show yesterday, Fils-Aime acknowledged that new hardware is what drives the video game industry, regardless of the manufacturer. The executive went on to say that although the newly released consoles from rivals boast powerful hardware, they need great games in order to survive in the long run.
“This industry loves brand new hardware and anything that’s good for the industry is good for Nintendo, so you know, they’re having a fantastic launch, kudos to them,” Fils-Aime said.
“What people recognize is that having pretty hardware is one thing, but you need games, and right now we’ve got some of the top rated games on our system, and it’s games that you can’t play anywhere else, so yeah, we’re feeling very good about where we are.”
Ps4 and xb1 has no games.

I don’t really get it.. Why are people buying consoles with no games?
Because people get blinded by promises and the hype of shiny new hardware. Including me, i got ps4 and wii u on launch day. should have never done that but i, like other millions become stupid when i see a brand new tech thing that plays games(only exception xbox 1).
I went out and bought my Wii U on launch as well. I only had 2 games to play and didn’t go on it for months and months. I’ve got about 8 titles now so I have something to play. But right now I am wanting a new title that really takes advantage of Wii U’s hardware literally to the max and that’s without all the resources for Wii U being available just yet.
I believe this is what you call ‘saving face’.
The mainstream media must be pretty pleased with themselves hyping up the powerhouses. Probably the detriment of overplaying the ‘Nintendo is Doomed’ card working in both Sony’s and Microsoft’s favour (of course, the plentiful mindless sheep that believe such drivel definitely helps). However, 2014 should be the Wii U’s year unless Nintendo drop the ball yet again (which if they do, panic buttons at the ready). Lack of good quality games is the only reason why I’m not biting into a PS4 just yet (as for Microsoft, they can go die in a fire). Next year, possibly.

I believe he’s referring to Sony’s recurring IPs, not the PS4’s lineup. In other words, he bought a PS4 in anticipation of games like Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Sly Cooper, etc., which haven’t been announced but are most likely on their way. Kind of a gamble, really, because you’re assuming that they’ll actually find those games worthwhile to make, but based on past experiences, I would think if you were to buy either console based on exclusives, it would be PS4 because Microsoft tends to have a very narrow variety of exclusives. Ironic that it’s the other way around at this point.
PS4 can’t replace a GAMING PC to play third parties at their best. But if it’s good enough for you, it’s good 4 me! Good luck

The noises surrounding the Wii U are as positive now as they have been since the launch. It’s not saying much, but it’s something to build on. People are talking about it again, and it’s selling at least ok. When Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 come next year Nintendo need to seize the momentum and splash the cash on some serious marketing.

The Xbone and PS4 are going to flatline next year just like the Wii U is this year. That’s where Wii U can seize the momentum.
The difference between the PS4 and XBOX One 1st party droughts is that they have the 3rd party support to fill in the blanks that the Wii U did not and still does not. The Wii U could suffer yet another drought.
Just because Nintendo will have more 1st party titles available next doesn’t mean that they will have enough to last.
We all know Nintendo ha no qualms about postponing releases to make sure that all quality-control measure have been taken to give consumers bug free games. That is a good thing. However, time waits for no man and while you are perfecting ‘A’ game, someone else is releasing several games.
All systems flatline after the Holiday season. That is just a historical fact. However the drought for the PS4 and XBOX One won’t be anywhere close to as bad as with the Wii U because once again, they have the 3rd-party support. Considering the fact that the PS4 will probably surpass the Wii U in total sales before the drought begins with the XBOX One close behind, Nintendo had better pray that Mario Kart 8 has the sales that previous installments have had and likewise drive console sales as much. That is the biggest title set to release in that time frame.

I disagree. Most 3rd party games are already available on gaming PCs albeit PCs are expensive. Availability on both Wii U and PC on big titles such as CoD, Skylanders, AC and other rehash third parties you could think of PLUS a cheaper console would likely increase WiiU demand. Besides, Titanfall and PvZ GW are both on PC and most PS4 titles are also on PC. In th end, PS4 will likely do the worst next year because of lackluster exclusives. Also, I jus checked the eShop and there are quite a few “indie” games to burn time.

If you want most of the games your friends are playing you have to get either an Xbox or Playstation because most of this years best games were not on Wii U, like Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, and Grand Theft Auto V.
2 out of 3 of those games were also on PC. GTA V is quite likely to be on the PC in the coming years. I don’t need no Xbox or Playstation. How many of Wii U’s best games are on PC, let alone Xbox or Playstation?
And no, I don’t want the games my friends are playing because I’m not a sheep. I want the games that I’m going to enjoy. In any sensible game of the year list, which console will have the most exclusives? Either 3DS or Wii U.

I’m getting the PS4 when Watchdogs come out. Anyways 2014 is going to be a great year for the Wii U. Games like X, DK, Bayonetta 2, and FEXSMT are what HARDCORE gamers should look for when released next year. (I now know why people hate DK on this site: THE GAME WAS TO HARD FOR THEM LOL)
I’ve tried hard, to find a reason to get PS4.
But have concluded, that I will rather invest that money on my PC.
Last gen in the beginning, the consoles we got, were a better choice than a high-end gaming PC, and it made sense to buy a gaming console, rather than upgrade PC.
This time, consoles are barely better than mediocre gaming PC’s, easily topped by cheap decent gaming PC.
And PC is actually getting most of the games. If you have a wiiu and PC you will nit need anything else.
Finally someone with common sense! Wii U and PC combined will cover 90-95% of excellent games (ignoring handhelds, but chuck in a 3DS if you count them). It did last generation, and it will continue. Xbone and PS4 are PCs. View them as a PC. Then realise you can get better PCs for similar money – and these are upgradable.
Wii U is a dedicated games console. The software fits on the hardware like a glove and it will give you experiences that you cannot get on a PC. If you want these experiences, then get a Wii U. I’ve yet to see experiences on PS4 and Xbone that I could not get better on a PC.

If Nintendo were smart, they would buy out Sega (which would come with Altlus), Capcom (they are not doing well financially) and Platinum Games. They should have funded Eternal Darkness 2: Shadow of the Eternals. Nintendo is clueless.

It makes smart business sense. Sega has a ton of IPs (e.g Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Ecco the Dolphin, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Yakuza, Panzer Dragoon….the list goes on and on)
Not really sure Nintendo has the money for that, but even if they did, it still wouldn’t be a good idea. SEGA is almost completely irrelevant at this point, the only game that they’re still known for is Sonic, and it’s not that great a game and I don’t trust Nintendo to improve it. Especially if it means we get more Sonic games like Colors and Lost World.

I needed to get an Xbox One to supplement my Wii U. I picked up Killer Instinct 3, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse. I’m looking forward to Titanfall, Super Mario 3D Land and Watchdogs for Wii U.

Exactly, the PS4 has less of this problem, but because Microsoft owns XBO, they don’t have enough exclusives on their consoles and too many games are on PC. Also, the games on PS4 & XBO right now (according to critics) are worse than the Wii U launch line-up. The Wii U is cool because it does stuff nobody else can, and has the best 1st party line-up in ever.
I just love how fun and innovative NSMBU, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart 8 are.
*They’re totally better than games like Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 that actually use the Wii Remote for something.

Lack of good games is exactly the Wii U’s problem, that’s why it’s getting ignored. Compared to PS4/One, maybe, but that’s not saying much because most of their libraries are garbage.

Nintendo should buy any and all Japanese 3rd party publisher that is struggling financially or that is possible to buy or work with. Nintendo should buy Sega, Tecmo, Namco, Konami, Capcom, and Square Enix. Nintendo should also put a Wiimote, nunchuck, and pro controller in the box with Gamepad and Wii U and a really great game.

I’m pretty sure those companies combined are worth more than Nintendo, if you think Nintendo can piss away their money and obtain all of those companies that easily, you’re the dumbass. Also, I’m not sure Nintendo could give attention to all of those franchises. But I guess that depends on how much extra resources they would receive.
In terms of sales numbers they did good. But with bricking and breaking and failed hard drives and disc readers they haven’t all been good lol.

The fact that PS4 and X1 are made very similar to PC’s makes porting 3rd party games much easier from PC to those consoles.
So what that WiiU has totally different architecture than a PC? It makes 3rd party go away even further miles away and in the end it is still much weaker in power than PS4 or Xbox1.

I don’t understand how you can say it’s far weaker. That doesn’t make any sense.
Sure it might look more powerful on the RAM side, but the reality is PS4 and X1 only have around 5Gb of RAM to use, I think it was something like 3Gb for the OS – navigating and multi-tasking what have you.
I see it as how the hardware talks to each other and also latency has a big part here.
unfortunately ps4 shows that it’s also possible to sell millions of consoles without having good games on it.
