Sakurai Confirms Super Smash Bros Will Not Be Coming Spring 2014, Says It Was Misinformation

Last week we reported that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS may be releasing Spring 2014 – according to a Nintendo of Germany representative. This rumour was immediately seen as a little far-fetched, with Nintendo Online reporting that sources had confirmed this indeed was a mistake.

Now, Sakurai has formally confirmed on Twitter that Super Smash Bros. will not be making the alluring Spring date, saying that this is simply misinformation. However, the game’s director said that it will be released at an unspecified later date in 2014, reconfirming what we already knew.

    1. The longer it takes the less consoles sold…..Nintendo needs games fast, Im 100% pro Nintendo…And it kills me to see how their being so laid back with the WiiU….Fiscal will not be reached with Donley Kong and Mario Kart….and Im betting on another software drought..lets see here.. December game???? WiiFit U- january game, Donkey Kong-Febuary game..March??? April??? May??? June?? July?? August??

We all know that MarioKart and Smash will be released in the spring/Summer but thats only 2 games and 6 months…..

This is what I mean by ” being laid back”…Time to be secret is over!

      1. Mariokart will help more than you think. Mariokart Wii outsold Smash Brothers Brawl by a huge margin.

I have no drought of games. Wonderful 101, Assassin’s Creed IV, Super Mario 3D World… plenty of games to play until DK.

        1. Well im busy with WW101,WWHD,Mario3DW,CODGhost,…..and Zelda LBTW,PokeX,StarFox3d, and DK3d..i bought a crap ton of games on Black Friday…I have over 10 Wiiu games and 8 3ds games..

im talking about a NEW game drought though…….

  1. Good, I’m glad to hear this. Although the Spring date would have been awesome; I’d fear the game wasn’t completed. I knew it was a ‘too good to be true’ kinda thing.
I’m expecting the game to be released in late summer or early fall, somewhere in that time frame, if it comes any earlier, I’d be even happier.

  2. Perfect. Don’t just rush the game, Sakurai. Seriously, the development started many months after the release of Kid Icarus Uprising.

  3. I wish this game will make it to Evo and MLG but Sakurai knows whats best for the game so let him have his time.

Oh well… I guess there might be some hype with KI and Ultra ST 4 at Evo

    1. I say give it more time, more polish, and stronger blance for the roster, we don’t want a unblanced ps all stars (like the game but heavily unbalanced)

      1. I think that if Sakurai was given an earlier deadline hat he would still pull through with a fantastic game. That’s just the way I see it anyway.

  4. In other words, High Commander Sakurai will polish the sacred game to epic proportions under the guidance of the holy N!

            1. Congratulations on the gayest thing ever posted on My Nintendo news. That deserves an accolade. I will definitely be print screening this and framing it across the site so that you will never let this comment down!

          1. It wasnt awful, it played differently and im sure this will well. You just couldnt adapt and sucked, like always, you suck.

                1. apologies :/ i probably got myself too involved in the argument when people started having a go at me after stating my opinion on a subject.

          1. Ok, im sure it gives you some confident when you can use that windows 98 in the wherever asylum you happen to be, but you should show your posts to your doctor and maybe finally you get the medicine you are lookin for.

  5. You guys need to think outside the box here, I recently read in an article about nintendo wanting to sell at least 9 mil units before the end of March. Lots of people have seen the lack of line ups nintendo has, and smash bros. would help greatly. Sakurai does not rush his games, however I have heard him say something about him having a certain amount of “time” to develop this game. That means this title is definitely ment to help sales, and note Sakurai didn’t state that this game is not coming BEFORE spring. I talked to a guy who worked at a game store who reads booklets telling the release dates of all kinds of games. This worker stated that the release dates in that booklet have never once been wrong. The release date he read in that booklet for SSB4 was “March 1st”. Notice how that is infact before spring? Now don’t go crazy on me, and at least consider this; Nintendo needs to reach that 9mil selling mark by the end of March. I’m just going by the facts, and remember, by when March hits, it will be just about the exact time it took to develop brawl.

  6. I think we all saw this coming.

Most of us said it would be delayed…well, maybe not an official delay. But we damn well knew it was not coming out in spring.

At least we have a bunch of indie games coming out on the “We launch software a year later U”

  7. I still expect it to be released in 2014, maybe in summer. It started development after Kid Icarus Uprising was finished in March 2012, By spring it would be in development for two years, so if anything they’d be doing some final touches to the game at that time.

    1. Princess Daisy, Pikachu & Yoshi fan

I can’t wait but longer it takes the better off it will be until then I will kick everyones ass with pikachu. I know Princess Daisy will not make it but as long as I have pikachu & yoshi I am good!

  8. I thought that he confirmed it wasn’t coming out in 2014 when I saw the headline. Aw well, late 2014 is still good, but a 2015 release would also be fun. This way it wouldn’t have to compete with the #YearOfGodzilla

  10. There IS news in here. The website still says Planned release 2014. I personally was convinced it was going to be 2015. Because come on, it’s smash bros. so for him to officially say it’s coming out in 2014 is pretty big.

  11. It’s gonna be November or December 2014 at the earliest. I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets delayed to Spring or Summer 2015 honestly. Brawl got a major delay, and now there are two games coming out simultaneously that interact with each other. And Sakurai and Nintendo are perfectionists, especially with a AAA title like Smash (which I’m not complaining, I’m all for delayed games if it mean more awesome). And from the sound of it, he’s really making sure it’s finely tuned and as perfect as he can get it and doing all of that work himself. So yeah, maybe 2014, probably 2015. If Wii Fit U got two delays already, then you know…

  12. I suppose I’m inclined to agree that waiting is for the best…I just hope they spend some of this time working on the story mode that they abandoned…
