Wii U GamePad Has Now Been Hacked To Stream PC Games

Hackers at this week at the 30th Chaos Communication Congress have managed to reverse engineer the Wii U GamePad controller to stream PC games. The team of professional hackers showed a drawing app streaming from a laptop to the Wii U GamePad and then managed to get a Gamecube emulated version of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker up and running. The demonstration didn’t go without a hitch, as there were some crashes. The group wants to build user-friendly tools for Windows and OSX and also build an Android port which allows users to use their own tablets, streaming from the console to a tablet of choice.

Thanks, Retrogaminglord

    1. As outrageous as it may sound, all they really did, was making the WiiU gamepad able to stream pc games, which doesn’t sound that bad. And it is also quite weird to do it, as you can just turn on your monitor for the same effect :O
The outrageous thing is that somebody hacked the gamepad, and could very well start the butterfly effect D: They should also realize what is legal, and what isn’t, as nintendo has proven themselves excellent at suing ^^

      1. All of this and all applications of this are legal. As long as no code is stolen from Nintendo, you are allowed to do whatever you want with your own hardware.

        1. They dumped the firmware of the gamepad instead of using bruteforce to unlock the thing so it’s obviously going to be a lawsuit.

    2. No Nintendo wanted them to come in! THEY DIDNT WANT TO GIVE THEM THE ENCRYTPTION KEY TO THE WHOLE WIIU SO THEY MADE IT SEPERATE

  1. That’s cool.

Hacking and modding is fine so long as you actually own the stuff.

Being able to use the gamepad is great, but Wind Waker on emulator…get the fuck out.
The game is available, stop acting like it’s “fine” because it’s on an emulator.

    1. “Waaah don’t emulate Wind Waker even though you already bought it! Buy the rehash version and give Jewtendo more money!”

    1. If they can mainstream an easy, stable hack, it basically would make PC’s 3rd party to Nintendo hardware. (ignoring the game emulator shit.) So it has potential to be profitable for Nintendo if they can stabilize it.

      Unlikely, but possible.

  2. the gamepad has almost no resources … so, they’ve cracked the ability to exploit no resources?

the gamepad doesn’t run games … it’s mostly a display device attached to a wireless controller. it doesn’t do any processing, besides encrypting/decrypting the video signal … what’s the point of this? … this helps nobody.

    1. No. That’s the point. If you just want to stream your game from your laptop to a comfy, kick-back controller, you don’t have to buy a fucking tablet. Just get a WiiU gamepad at a fraction of the cost and enjoy your PC game.

It’s a great idea so long as Nintendo’s getting their $$ for their hardware, and it doesn’t drive Nintendo software piracy up.

Still sounds like they have a ways to go yet. I say Nintendo should partner with them to make it a Nintendo controller for PC’s. It’s not like they are giving them their IP’s.

      1. ok, maybe … i think they *cracked* the video signal cryptography, if anything … i think they can hijack and force a video-feed over it, as i understand it … i’m not sure if they actually got the inputs to work and created a device driver to listen to the inputs from the gamepad but if they complete all those tasks, then perhaps it might be good.

i think the gamepad/wiiu pairing technology would require a persistent bluetooth connection however … this might require a specialized dongle created for the purpose of using it as you mentioned (attached to the laptop USB) … i’m theorizing here, but it just seems like these people are trying to make a name for themselves rather than creating anything useful (yet).

        1. They hacked the Wiiu’s hardware and they found out it runs on dragon tears and its strong enough to keep up with Xbox One

    2. lets see, u could use the gamepad as a second monitor, if they get the controls on it working u could play skyrim on it or something

  4. Well threw gold thing is it is useless unless you have awii u so this would give a boost to system sales.

The bad is they have just given Nintendo a reason to not list dual game pad games.

  5. The last thing I need for the Wii u is a Crunchyroll app, then I’m all set.

To bad they have released or announced apps for all the other consoles except the Wii u and 3ds. And If it ever gets announced I can bet it’s for Usa/Canada only as everything else.

        1. a stupid ass half life 2 mod where you go on this ‘experience’ with a narrator, making different decisions a long the way. people believe its changed their way of life when to be honest it’s very cliche and not that well written. it later got made into a game for its popularity

  6. Does this mean the streaming technology behind the wii u is only in the gamepad and not the console? If this is true I can almost guarantee there will be a Wii U version without a gamepad that will come out before the next holiday season probably for 149-199.

    1. my mum let me come here for five minutes

      its n both dumb nut

there just finding a eay to link the pc wirlesly stop reading to much into things

how could the wiiu link up at all with no in built ability you plonker

      1. i would believe you except for the fact the sm3dw, mk8, ssb4, dcktf and a lot of other games dont need the wii u pad to be functional.

        1. Super Mario 3D World doesnt require it except for the levels where you blow on the mike, but you can touch and interact with the world ( I did this alont in 3D World, its a shit ton of fun)

DK is the only one that doesnt have gamepad use

  7. As long as they stay out of the grey area.
It wont take too long for them to hack the console for “homebrew” and “shitz”.
But I hope Nintendo has some plan for that, frequent firmware updates gets you only so far.

Ps4 and xbone might get hacked on their first year.

    1. my mum let me come here for five minutes

DUMB FUCK THEY HAVE ALREADY ADMITTED THEY CANNOT HACK WIIU THE VIDEO OF TH CONFERANCE WENT ON YOUTUBE ONLY THE OTHER DAY

THEY CAN GET IN WII MODE BUT WIIU MODE IS SERIOUSLY PROTECTED THE HACKING COMUNITY STSTED THERE BEATEN

NO PIRASY ON WIIU GAMES DUDE THIS WAS ADMITTED ONLY THE OTHER DAY

        1. I’d imagine he’s annoyed that you just read 2 lines of a news post and already get out your uninformed judgements. The Wii U has not been hacked and hacking a wireless protocol for transfering frames and other data has nothing to do with this. The Wii U tablet is dumb (in a technical sense), it has no actual logic having anything to do with Wii U’s internal functionality.

The guys admitted they can’t hack Wii U. That’s pretty cool, actually. It says the system is pretty solid this time. But no system is unhackable.

          1. I did not claim, that Wii U was hacked already.
I did not claim, that these guys would, or could hack Wii U.
I just made a public thought, hoping that pirates and crackers would stay off the system.

Sooner or later, someone will find the way to exploit weaknesses in pretty much any hardware.
PS3 is good example, it was pretty solid to the end,
even though they had to get rid of features to exterminate weaknesses, and sue that one kid who was on his way to crack the system wide open.
But PS3’s constant firmware updates kept it pretty safe from pirates.

I’m sure Nintendo has made a lot of improvements to their security, especially since the Wii was cracked open pretty quickly.

And as I have seen his other comments, if he is not “trolling”, then mental retardation is not very off diagnosis.

  8. well they haven emulated the wii u and it would take years to do that, they still haven’t emulated the 3ds. thay probably wont and i think ninty should somehow let pc and android games be compatible with the gamepad and implement the touchscreen for games that use the mouse and mouse like zenonia (android) and some pc games that use a mouse for point and click

    1. better colors? they just picked a random game, im sure you could run something else as its just running on dolphin, Melee on gamepad anyone?

  9. While I could not understand anything this man was saying, from what I could see it seems like the Wii U GamePad has a lot more hardware and is more capable than we thought.

I would not be surprised if at some point Nintendo gave the Wii U GamePad the ability to stream/download a full game and allow you to play it on the go.

      1. Yeah I kinda sense that myself that the next console for Nintendo is going to be a full-fledged portable table device with and HDMI-out where you can play it on screen if you wish.

However I think that the Wii U GamePad is just them testing the waters first. The port on the bottom of the Wii U GamePad is there for a reason.
