Iwata Says Next Nintendo Home Consoles And Handhelds Will No Longer Be Completely Different

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata says that the company is trying to make similar next generation console and handheld hardware with a cross compatible operating system. This sounds as close as we can get to a hybrid machine, which many were expecting and hoping Nintendo would create.

“Last year Nintendo reorganized its R&D divisions and integrated the handheld device and home console development teams into one division under Mr. Takeda.”

“Also, as technological advances took place at such a dramatic rate, and we were forced to choose the best technologies for video games under cost restrictions, each time we developed a new platform, we always ended up developing a system that was completely different from its predecessor. The only exception was when we went from Nintendo GameCube to Wii.”

“In this perspective, while we are only going to be able to start this with the next system, it will become important for us to accurately take advantage of what we have done with the Wii U architecture. It of course does not mean that we are going to use exactly the same architecture as Wii U, but we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.”

“Still, I am not sure if the form factor (the size and configuration of the hardware) will be integrated. In contrast, the number of form factors might increase. Currently, we can only provide two form factors because if we had three or four different architectures, we would face serious shortages of software on every platform. To cite a specific case, Apple is able to release smart devices with various form factors one after another because there is one way of programming adopted by all platforms. Apple has a common platform called iOS. Another example is Android. Though there are various models, Android does not face software shortages because there is one common way of programming on the Android platform that works with various models. The point is, Nintendo platforms should be like those two examples.”

        1. I guess its too difficult now to try an innovate to ignorant and arrogant world…they all just pass it off as gimmicks.
          well…..
At least no one will bitch and complain about power next gen… because this gen, Nintendo traded power for the gamepad.

          1. Which is sad since features Nintendo popped up with years ago and are standard on controllers now were considered “gimmicks” at the time: the diamond layout for the main buttons, the ANALOG STICK, shoulder buttons. The only thing no one batted an eye at was actual 3D movement in the 3rd person.

I still think Nintendo will innovate because if they didn’t they would be the third color swap console…you could call them Dan or Akuma…or Reptile or Jade. Either works. In the end becoming extremely similar to Sony and Microsoft’s console offerings and doing away with innovation would make them as expendable as those two.

          2. Honestly I think next time it well result in a ipad/iphone scenario ware the tech that runs the games well be the same but power well be different.
I think that rather than coming up with yet another new controller they should work on updating all the ones they have. They should also focus on a 200$ portable and a 400$ home system with a 100$ gamepad that can run as a full tablet as well as a controller.

I think that would be the best move

            1. I agree with a peripheral gamepad…
that would be awesome for the next gen…and the default controller will be normal (hence nintendo saying their next console wont be too different, cuz people are too stupid to comprehend it)

              1. I think they should still sell the gamepad with the system much the same as Microsoft selling the Xbox One with Kinect. This well encourage developers to use the devices. And since Nintendo has said they want to blur the development lines. It would make sense that the portable and home systems would both use 2 screens. Also since they plan to include DS games to the VC it would make further sence.
but again I think they should go back to the Wii remote, balance board, nun chuck, pro controller, and gamepad. They should update them all, now that tech has changed and prices have gone down they could make a all new remote.
update speaker, add microphone, enhance motion controls, ad duel rumble, a analog trigger with rumble, add NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE. Add a inductive rechargeable battery, they could also add a small OLED screen at the base. And do this with all their controllers. And then focus on system power, graphics, ease of development, connect with indie market, and they should buy Sega and platinum.

    1. NINTENDO!!!! YEAS AT LEAST YOU CAN COMPETE IN HARDWARE NOW! I wanted them to do both though ………….but I aslo wanted the 3 screens on the portables to stay sooooooooooooo in the end I think it will work well.

    2. I don’t think that’s what it means. They just mean Nintendo systems will all henceforth use the same operating system and coding. Like how the Wii and Gamecube were very similar in terms of how software had to be programmed to get it to work on the system. A Gamecube game didn’t have to be altered much, coding wise, to get it to work on the Wii. They will do this with all platforms in the future. As opposed to the Wii U, which is a pain to program for. Developers have to kind of stab in the dark when adapting the game for Wii U and just use trial and error till it works.

When I read the headline I thought they meant they were going to make their future consoles more standard, more like whatever Sony or Microsoft was doing, ie: favour hardware and processing over gimmicks. I think that would be fantastic as it would make third parties bring their games to Nintendo and stop this recent trend of Nintendo being behind and irrelevant from a technological standpoint. Nintendo doesn’t need gimmicks like motion controls and touch screens to stand out, because it has exclusive access to a ton of amazing IPs. So if they would forego the gimmicks in favour of up to date hardware, they could still leverage their IPs and play with the big boys. Sadly this is not what they meant.

      1. The problem those are gimmicks, there is no such thing as a Standard controller. It has never been the case for video games, otherwise we would still be on a joystick with one button. If gaming doesn’t experiment, I am done. Its probably why my xbox360 gets used as a DVD player most of the time, the games are really boring.

But what I got out of it is, that they use the same OS, which means virtual console doesn’t have to be redeveloped for every system so I can play the games on your account. Its like once your in your in. Its why the 3DS and Wii U use an ARM processor for there OS. The problem is they are too differnt.

      2. So in essence, they are doing what Sony did. They are going to make it so that the hand held and the console can be used together. What I WOULD like them to do is make it so that some of the games I have on a 3DS could be emulated on a Wii U, or better yet. Pull a Jaguar and make it so that the game could be used on both the console and the hand held.

        1. If there is only one system or a system with handheld as controller and handheld sold separately that can be used as second controller then you’d only have one game that could be used on either. Digital only on handheld; disc or digital on console and games could be transferred to handheld to take with you (something like that anyway) as they are moving to games being linked to NNID instead of console. You could play wherever you want and it would be the same game. We’d have everything – Pokémon, Monster Hunter, Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart etc etc wherever and whenever you want.

      1. And how would you call it? I will call it the Nintendo DC (For Dual Console) but I think that may get in to legal troubles with WB. the owners of DC Comic.

    1. Lol WIISCAMU is actually pretty funny, keep up with those. Failtendo is pretty weak. Still think Nintendon’t is probably the best satirical use of the word Nintendo anyone has come up with.

    1. Their gong to make you buy a vita so yu can do it becuz Sony is tha best and shits alover the shitu and bitchds #YOLO #COD4LIFE #XBOXRULZ

    2. i think it says future console in the article, not the wii u and 3ds necessary but the consoles that come after those

    3. What would be cool is if someone on a DS can play smash with someone on a Wii U. How’s that for amazingly awesome. Doubtful it’ll happen, but a man can dream.

  1. This just means that Nintendo is trying to create a way to to hybridize their console and handheld devices and connect them together, much like how how Apple products are connected.

This doesn’t mean that they’re going to develop a console that doesn’t rely on some new type of gameplay control or other gimmick.

    1. Which basically means they’ll get rid of the disc format. In one way or another. Either that or you’re going to buy a Disc->Handheld game transfer kit or be able to do this from the “big” console. Because if the games should run on all Nintendo platforms at once, they should.

It would be quite cool to be honest. Just bring your Nintendo and you’ll be cool with everyone.

There’ll not be DS and Wii games, there’ll be Nintendo games.

I hope the developers can pull off games that work on multiple form factors like this, including different amount of screens, physical controls, touch, etc.

      1. i think some games belong only on nintendo handhelds, and some only on the home consoles, there are only a couple games that can actually be practical to have playable on both consoles. games like main series pokemon games and animal crossing should be handheld only games, while games like loz, mario, etc are better on home consoles, but games like mario kart, smash bros, fire emblems could work on both

    1. Exactly. Future ideas are great to keep people interested down the line. In the meantime a big Direct as you said is needed NOW! An update sooner rather than later would also help. Freshening thing up doesn’t hurt at all. More focus on Wii U for next few months is necessary. No gap between DKC & MK8 is key.

  2. Aw man, I liked how the Handhelds were completely different from the Consoles, it made it a huge reason to buy GBA/DS games!

  3. Now they’re actually playing smart. If this attitude were adopted for Wii U and 3DS, they’d be sitting on top as far as the 3 companies go. Hopefully the feedback from announcements regarding this plan are overly positive so they can see this is the right path. Although I expect Sony to see this, take note and most likely migrate the PS4 and Vita or their next handheld to a similar structure

  4. I can imagine being able to use the next generation of Nintendo handhelds as controllers for the next gen console like mini gamepads. Each system of course would still have its own software to make each unique and able to be used without the other.

    1. Not really. He was talking about the architecture of one Nintendo console resembling the architecture of another. The headline should be “NEXT NINTENDO HOME CONSOLES AND HANDHELDS WILL NO LONGER BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT [TO EACH OTHER]”, not “[TO PLAYSTATION AND SONY]”

  5. This is going to be great for Nintendo, as long as they do a good job integrating across platforms and they keep pricing low.

Nintendo does not push the WiiU hardware very far, in my opinion. I can’t imagine that they would push anything as powerful as the PS4 or Xbox One. They should have a weaker, cheaper, largely mobile system, kind of like Ouya except based on dedicated gaming hardware and filled with quality first party offerings. That way, you could play the same games on the go and on your TV- I don’t think Nintendo needs to make a distinction anymore.

  6. Vb2 with 2 motion plus controllers with analog sticks with a gamepad handheld like device for offline multiplayer games…

      1. they’d have to do it right and bank on the success of 3DS fans jumping on board; wonder if they’ll put out a combined unit 5 years after 3DS instead of waiting for Wii U to hit the 5 year mark.

  7. I hope they make a compatibility option that allows the hand held to become a controller. to the home console. That would be awesome. If it’s going to be similar consoles, then I don’t see why the hand held shouldn’t be used as a controller. It wouldn’t be the same size as a game pad, the 3DS has the necessary controls/buttons to become a controller, and the size is good too. although it wouldn’t feel like a traditional controller, it’s an option for that specific reason. Also, the ability to transfer the handheld game play screen to the The TV screen. but still controlling it via handheld, but also the home controller if you if want. That type of cross platform play really interest me. that way, I could play my 3DS games on TV. although it would be the next handheld console, not the 3ds, but im guessing nintendo with have backwards compatibility. like they always have in the recent consoles.

  9. I like what I hear. Whenever a system launches, it’s always short on software. While the Wii U have backwards-compability with the Wii (through Wii Mode), it feels adverse and tacked-on, not a completely integrated experience.
I’m just wondering if using similar hardware-software architecture starts with the Wii U, or next-gen (Fusion, anyone?).

  10. Does this mean Nintendo is not fully supporting Wii U because they are coming out with something that will replace Wii U and 3DS. I don’t know if that is cool.

    1. It means that when it is time to come out with their next gen console (yes, next gen as in after Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One) the next gen console will be cross compatable with their handheld.

Basically, Nintendo will never have the same problem that they did with the Wii U ever again. They are going to fix most of their mistakes and Nintendo will once again be king of video games.

  11. I love “glove to hand” analogies, and I think everything that hardware and software developers should do in gaming should fit to that analogy.

Nintendo software fits Nintendo hardware like a glove, unlike multiplatform games. Nintendo OS’s are designed with gaming as the premier attraction, unlike the competitors. It makes sense that a Nintendo portable should fit a Nintendo home console like a glove, and I hope that Nintendo really focus on that approach for their next consoles.

  12. Hey Nintendo. I was wondering if you guys are gonna be making a Super Mario Galaxy 3 game, I hope yes cause it’s like the best Mario Game ever, reply if it when u can

  13. This is by far the best news I’ve ever read on this site! Finally!

This also might mean that the game pad is here to stay. Love it to bitz. Best controller ever created.

  14. So basically we can finally expect to be able to play the main series Pokemon rpg on our home consoles whether Game Freak likes it or not due to cross compatability!?… HELL YA!!! SUCK IT GAME FREAK!

  15. IMO this. . . Is shit.
    1) You will need a superpowerful portable (which would mean a super expensive portable)
    2) You can have a decent portable and a shitty home console. . . .
If all games are for both both consoles should be similar in terms of power did anyone think about it? Nintendo i love you. I love wiiu but this can even kill your handhelds and if that someday happen i will quit gaming for ever.

    1. The world changes, no one likes, but you can’t do anything about it, so don’t whine. Its exactly same thing as you dying someday, you won’t like it, but you can’t do anything, so stop complaining.
