Popular online gaming site GameSpot has awarded Retro Studio’s latest adventure Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze a mediocre six out of ten. The publication says that it’s one of the least exciting platformers that they have played in some time. Edge and Eurogamer both awarded the game 7/10. It will be interesting to see the overall Metacritic score once all the reviews roll in.
If the regular levels were as inventive as the boss battles, then Tropical Freeze would be a surefire hit, or at least a game that demands more of your attention. No matter how much I was looking forward to seeing DK in HD, it’s difficult to maintain that enthusiasm when the end product plays it so safe: even the visuals fail to make an impact. They’re nice enough, but like the level design, the environments are mostly bland. While you could argue that the visual style is true to the series, I think even traditionalists wouldn’t mind something with a little more pizzazz behind it. As it stands, this a sometimes fun but mostly uninspired and unimaginative entry in the Donkey Kong series.
It should be pointed out, Gamexplain gave it a 5 star rating out of 5.

Outside of being eye candy Pikmin 3 really isn’t that great of a game. It’s a very ‘niche’ series that has it’s fanbase, but doesn’t have widespread appeal. I think the rating is more than fair.
Huh, Pikmin 3 was my favorite game of 2013. More than Loz: ALBW or Super Mario 3D World. Perhaps it doesn’t have as wide of a fan base, but it is a GREAT game.
I rented it from the library yesterday, and finally got to play it today. I gotta agree with you, it’s so fun. Reminded me of how much I love Pikmen. Can’t wait to dig into it more.
Like I said. The Pikmin series is very niche. People love it, or have no interest in it. I’ve played it, nothing GREAT about it at all except for the graphics.

YOU do not decide what game has quality or not. The decision is made by each individual consumer. The fact that only 720,000 consumer have purchased Pikmin 3 is a good indicator just how many people feel the game is worth their time.
The entire Pikmin series has only sold about 6.2 million copies. Figures don’t lie. Pikmin has a loyal fan base and Nintendo caters to it. That is what the definition of a niche market means. It’s a niche game that has a niche audience. Period. Except the fact of what it is and except the fact that people are allowed not to like what you like, and except the fact that pointing out ‘facts’ is not an attack but just stating the truth of the matter.
There is nothing wrong with liking a game that has a niche market. One of my favorite games of all time was a niche game which is Legend of The Mystical Ninja 64. That also did not sell a lot. However if you ask anyone about ti that has played it they all have glowing reviews over. The difference which is is that if someone doesn’t like it I can understand why because a lot of the humor in the series is catered toward a Japanese audience and that throws a lot of people off because they don’t get it.
The point of playing video games is to have fun and no matter how great the game is mechanically if it fails to deliver in that aspect then how can a reviewer truthfully give it a high score.
It seems like a few people in this thread feel that just because THEY like something everyone is suppose to like it and if someone disagrees then there is something wrong with them. How selfish and immature. Grow up people. If you love Pikmin 3 great for you. Glad you got your money’s worth. Except however that many, many, many MORE people don’t.

I really don’t get why this is bad. I thought Nuts & Bolts was pretty good. It was different, certainly, but good.
Actually youre extremely wrong, gamexplain is really harsh on nintendo games and they actually pick out the games faults more than these pro reviewers. Andre is pretty picky when it comes to his nintendo games I mean look at 3d world. While everyone gave the game high ratings and praised it endlessly, Andre presented what he thought were the faults of the game so he didn’t give it perfect score. These pro reviewers who played tropical freeze just suck at platformers, and the levels were far from bland as they had a sense of progression and they actually seemed alive and interactive. Don’t listen to these joke reviewers, play the game fully in person before you judge a game. And I’m not solely a nintendo fan, I’m a fucking video game fan, numbered rating are pointless and stupidly biased anyways, high or low.
And IGN gave it 9/10, but it isnt suprisin that this site uses clickbaits.

Umm… all these trailers seemed to show some incredibly varied, tight and imaginative level design that properly tests one’s skill, particularly the most recent one. That one seems to suggest it surpasses Returns, which I have played extensively simply because of how varied, tight and imaginative THAT game’s level design was.
So, are the trailers all a sugar-coated illusion, or is gamespot full of bias as people are saying?

I just read the review, and the reviewer complains about the difficulty of the game. Such a shame that a game should receive such a low score because he was expecting to breeze through each level.

i guess someone either hates donkey kong or they died so many times they gave it a 6/10 because of that stupid reason. if i died so many while giving reviews then it doesnt mean the games sucks, it means i suck. btw im pretty good at platformers but i do die cuz it means i wasnt paying attention or made a stupid move. DKTF deserves at least an 8/10 because there arent many DK games like country and especially dk64, they should do an hd remake of dk64
all nintendo games should have the difficult levels from noobs (xtremly easy) to vets (so friggin hard that its frustrating but rewarding after completing the level but not near as hard as f-zero, that will only apply to that game and maybe metroid). reviews should nat be based on what you like and what everyone likes (im looking at you CoD), if the game is good with good sound and plays good (controlwise) then it should be rated based on that like mario 64 got 10/10 then and its not because it was popular but its an excellent game, sunshine got near-perfect scores because it was a fun game, hard at times and it should be hard at times. look at mario 3d world, later levels got harder and people enjoyed the revved-up difficulty as it went on. noone like hand-holing games like CoD and easy games like CoD, i do suck at CoD cuz im not quick enough unlike me being quick enough on rpg games and action games like GoW (god of war). in the end the reviewer is a big baby

The new Donkey Kong games do not even look as aesthetically pleasing as Rare’s DKC1-2-3. It is a lazy effort for sure, similar to NSMBU. Even third party efforts such as Rayman Legends have better graphics.
Nice try, Gamespot, but still, I’m gonna buy the game at launch.

I feel really bad for the reviewer because Nintendo and fanboys have been ripping on him for just doing his fucking job and having an opinion.
This behavior should not be encouraged under any circumstances. No seriously, I don’t give a flying fuck if ‘they’re pretending to be Cranky Kong’, that doesn’t make getting pissy at negative criticism of your game okay. At all. Cranky Kong isn’t real. That’s still Nintendo of America behind that account and they just belittled a review and their career for not liking the level design.
That is not okay by any stretch of the imagination.
