Nicalis Founder Hits Back At The Wii U GamePad

Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez has criticised the Wii U GamePad on Twitter. Rodriguez says that the controller is vastly underused by developers and is therefore a waste of money when looking at the total cost of the Wii U to consumers.

Thanks, Kyle

    1. The PS4 has the Vita remote play and Xbox One has the Kinect. Each console has a unique device 3rd parties aren’t taking advantage of…yet.

      1. I own a Wii U, a PS4, and a Xbox One. The DualShock touchpad and the Kinect are both gimmicks that I will never use. By this logic, I should have never bought either of those consoles because I wasted my money on features that I do not care about.

          1. It could add $1 to the price of the PS4 and my point would still stand. I have paid these companies for features that I will not use.

          2. The new eye toy is crap, Kinect is so much more then a camera, if you honestly dont like it, that’s fine, but if used right its a great device, the same with game pad or Wii remote

      2. Honestly I love Kinect, haters just make up 80% of its issues, or its simply user error. I love the Wii remote (it dues need a upgrade though) and I love the game pad ( which they should have called the “view pad” ) honestly I don’t see any thing special about move, I have it, never use it. Xbox smart glass is pretty cool, forza its nice as a GPS. But revs need to embrace them more and don’t take casual players crap, yes I’m calling cod casual. Or at the very least ” softcore gamers” hardcore gamers love trying new things, playing different stuff and owning more then one system

        1. “hardcore gamers love trying new things”

aaannnd this is were you lost it, Nintendo lost most of its hardcore market when they opted to stick with the Wiimote. The Casuals love gimmicks, not the hardcore.

      1. So if I want to use the gamepad in my house for off tv play I have to pay an additional 150 for a vita plus the cost of a PS4? That cones up to around 600 with a game while I can get a Wii U for 300 and a game.

        1. Yup seems like it, Of course, you cant play using the off TV feature on the Wii U’s Gamepad if you have the console in a different floor or a few rooms away (in my case, just a room away). Each one has a positive and a negative to them.

    2. PS4 also has the touchpad on the controller and the vita remote play, but remote play with the vita is very flawed, I know I use it when I can, and the touchpad is just an afterthought in most games… Kinda like the gamepad.

    3. It won’t blow away the competition, the Wii U isn’t gonna make some massive comeback and win this gen in terms of sales. ALl Ninty can do at this point is prevent the gap from becoming unmanageable.
That said, I love the Gamepad. It’s 1000 times better than motion controls could ever be in terms of what it adds to the game. Look at Batman Arkham City, that’s a multi plat game, but the Wii U one by far the superior version. Having easy access to all the gadgets and map and such makes such a difference.

        1. Wow that’s lame. It’s so forced, he doesn’t come across as hating Wii U at all. That little smirk at the end, as if to say ‘ha I’m so hilarious’, what a fat moron. Go die of diabetes.

          1. u realise he just says what people pay him 2 say right.

dumb hateful guy, ur mom is ashamed u were ever born.

      1. I think now is the right time to get my Wii U game pad and hit you on the head till you die….. cause your getting on my nerves.

    4. Says the founder of a company that basically only make money on Nintendo platforms, specially the 3ds. Says the man who has been developing games for a device with two screens…. This is just ridiculous

  1. Blame developers for not taking the opportunity. He consumer shouldn’t be penalised for anything.

If the developer learns the hardware, then they could create something really good on it.

  2. Etecoons and Dachoras

I agree with him. I’d be happy using the Wii U Pro Pad instead of the Wii GamePad if that meant making the Wii U a lot more powerful.

    1. What do you mean “more powerful”? It’s powerful enough as it is. Retro recently said this themselves.

Making the the gamepad wouldn’t really have impacted on the consoles performance anyways. They went for a mixture of things.

      1. If its power is low enough to keep dozens, if not hundreds of 3rd party titles from making a Wii U appearance, then no: it’s not powerful enough. Retro Studios has a nice deal going with Nintendo so it seems, of course they won’t diss the Wii U’s hardware -__-”.

So what he is saying is really “I’d be happy using the Wii U Pro Pad instead of the Wii GamePad if that meant the Wii U got a lot more 3rd party support/titles.”

Face it: us Wii U owners are missing out on a lot of fantastic games.

        1. Hang on just now. Are you referring to the amount of power it draws from the mains or are you referring to the speed of the console? Two different things.

Also if you must know, the console can actually do quite a lot per each clock of a single core.

          1. I’m still awaiting greatness to arrive on my PS4. My Xbox One has done nothing for me. I’m not sure what fantastic games you are talking about?

        2. And also, it’s not the console isn’t powerful enough as it is. It’s more the fact that they don’t like learning another console. Microsoft and Sony went with what they did because it was the cheaper option, but oddly enough X1 is more expensive, which I frankly do not understand.

All 3 consoles are on par – if you understand hardware.

        3. Fact: It’s not the fucking gamepad, it’s the small install base. EVERY dev says “it’s not profitable” not “it’s not possible.”

WiiU suffered from a horrible launch, a horrible game drought, and now everyone’s taking cheap shots at the game pad and the lack of ram. Neither are why Devs left Nintendo.

          1. First it was “not possible” then “not our core audience” and then it was “low install base”.
Seems like there will always be a reason.

Truth is, the industry cannot support 4 major platforms at the same time.
And even though now you can shovel pretty much 1 on 1 ports across 3 of those, the different one will get the short stick every time, for the sake of maximizing the profits.

Maybe Nintendo should have swallowed their pride, and do what Sony and MS does, at the beginning you must spend money to make money, even on third party.
Cant really expect third parties to jump on board with zero install base.

        4. Third parties don’t support the console because the install base is so small. It’s got nothing to do with power. They just don’t want to spend time and money developing a game for a console that no one owns because that limits the sales of the game.

          1. Nah, that’s bullshit, when the Wii U still had a bigger install base, than the ps4 and Xbox one, they still gave a that answer when its complete bullshit. Yes, they may know that the Ps4 and Xbox One will grow, but doesn’t mean the Wii U’s will not, so that’s not even any good reason at all.

  3. He must have been looking at Donkey Kong when he made that reply. A lot of other wii u games make use of the game pad, rather as a map or in other ways. :/

  4. I’d have to agree with him, every Wii U game I own barely uses the bottom screen. (I own 8 at the moment)
When it does use it it draws my attention away from the TV, and it’s really jarring.
Or it just displays the exact same picture as the TV (Super Mario 3D World)

    1. Everyone seems to ignore one of, if not the best use of the 2nd screen. – off TV play.

The wiiu syncs to the game pad flawlessly. I do 80% of my wiiu gaming in the game pad alone. Could the game pad have been an add-on peripheral? Sure, I suppose, but it’s definitely an underdog feature that ignorantly get’s called a “gimmick” by people who either don’t understand the value it adds, or simply like to insult Nintendo with the word “gimmick.”

  5. I really don’t like the Gamepad, but that comment was still rude. He could have framed it in a better way. It felt like he was just knocking the Wii U because it’s the “cool” thing to do

    1. I liked the Gamepad until I bought a Pro Controller, It’s still a nice controller it’s just the touchscreen hasn’t really been used by developers and Nintendo themselves. I don’t even know how Smash bros or Mario Kart will use the gamepad :0

      1. Exactly.

However, I dont think smash bros would be used much for it. I think that they will have the controls simplistic enough that it could be used with any controller. Same rules apply for mario kart 8

    2. To think something is for kids means your a kid too because only a kid would be so fascinated by being a “mature” adult and to blush at things so childish. I should stop talking if I would you.

  6. It isn’t Nintendo fault that the third party choose make easy money exploring the gamepad capabilities. The Wii U is the best machine by far, the graphics are good enough, and the gamepad is the only real thing next gen in that generation.

    1. Thank you. That’s what people don’t get. Nintendo NAILED 2nd screen sync, and HD or not, it’s a beautiful display that allows console gaming in bed, on an elliptical, on the couch while the TV is in use…

Just because some people do ALL their gaming in front of the TV, doesn’t mean they get to insult those of us who live the game pad.

      1. Most heartwarming story was that near blind girl (dont remember the proper term) being able to enjoy games with her family with Wii U Gamepad.

I bought Wii U because of Bayonetta 2, but might buy Nintendo’s next console as well, if it keeps the gamepad.

  7. BLAME DEVELOPERS! and get wondefful 101!!!!!!

alos………….WHAT A STUPID PERSON ! BUY A PRO CONTROLLER TOO! plus I wouldn’t be able to imagine WWHD or ALBW withougt a second screen.

  8. If you can’t figure out what to do with the gamepad, then you technically failed to be a developer. No its not because its stupid, or its the cool thing to do, its because you couldn’t come up with anything to do with it. Stop blaming the Wii U if you can take advantage of its features.

  9. nintendo needs to focus on begging third party to put their games on wii u. nintendo keeps on ignoring gamers and their fans. nintendo fans like are starting to get annoyed of stupid decicions. i wanted gta v for wii u. :(

  10. Whether you want to admit it or not the guy is right. I love my Wii U and play it all the time but most games don’t use the gamepad or do nothing interesting with it. Look at DK tropical freeze, retro couldn’t think of anything to use the screen for so the left it blank. Now some games got it right my favorite is MH3U, I love the gamepad because I can customize the layout to my liking, but just because you do not agree with the guy does not mean he is wrong.

  11. I’m not really a fan of the gamepad. When I get a pro controller, I’ll basically use that only. It’s just not suited for me with the gamepad.

  12. some wii u fanboys are in denial on this comment section alreay. nintendo commander loves sucking on reggie tits

    1. Pikmin 3 also uses gamepad for map even while playing co-op mode. It helps a lot to see what is happening around levels while collecting fruits and dead enemies with friends.

  13. While I do agree with him, it’s just some shithead’s opinion. Not a reputable, thought-out analysis. Wii U is easy pickings for criticism these days.

    1. I not sure if I could go back to video games without the input window screen thing. So I might be done with games after this for a very long while.

  14. anytime I’m playing a game on my Wii U and I don’t have to hit start or select to bring up the menu button to select an item or hold on another button to select an item because I can just look down for a split second and touch my screen or not even have to look down at all yeah it makes it worth it it’s better than the other controllers

  15. If Nintendo ditched the Gamepad and offered $100 worth of tech to improve the power of the Wii U then they wouldn’t be in this mess. Nintendo should have just competed against Sony and Microsoft… I would have been fine with that. Now, with that being said, I have the Gamepad and I think it’s amazing, but it is definitely the Wii U’s greatest hinderence as it is it’s greatest niche.

When more people see it as a hinderence, it completely mutes the good points; they get drowned out and no one cares… So the Gamepad is a commercial failure and I hope Nintendo doesn’t forward that way of thinking with their future products as I am sure they will be met with the same fate as the Gamepad.

    1. If Nintendo ditches the game pad, then one of the WiiU’s only features keeping me with Nintendo is castrated.
The gamepad was an amazing Idea. Creating a system perceived to be weak was not.
People need to stop seeing them as connected. It was never “Gamepad or more power” We could have had both and been priced between xbox1 and PS4

  16. The GamePad is what makes the Wii U a game console as opposed to a powerful gaming PC on your TV screen with a controller.

  17. Honestly, they should have made the Game Pad the size of a DS-XL (bottom 1/2) and initially sold it for $249.99 I think it could have done much more than it has. I think the current Game Pad could have been an XL option, not standard.

  18. At least Wii U has a reason to exist, unlike Xbone and PS4. Ultimately I don’t think that the second screen is a successful innovation here, but at least it gave a reason to give a damn about the console. I still do not understand what the Xbone and PS4 are giving me that the 360 and PS3 would not. Do not talk to me about graphics, I don’t care. I’ve played these consoles – the graphics are technically better but the games still look as bland as all the last-gen games so who cares.

  19. Nintendo Commander Phazon

So, if the Wii U didn’t have the Gamepad and was equal to XB1/PS4, would 3rd parties really support Nintendo?…

      1. Probably not.
The best way would have been to go with the x86 architecture, even if weaker GPU, porting would have been practically free, compared to now.

  20. thats stupid i brought my wii u solely for the off tv play function which works well at home and on the move take the console any where and as long as i have a outlet i can play console games on the train at the airport practically anywhere if and when the other devs do decide to make the effort it will become even more effective

    1. +1 Been there / done that. Also, since the WiiU has such a low wattage pull, I can play on it for 3 hours using my travel battery. (it’s big, but not possible with any other console)

  21. You buy a wiiu for Nintendo games not 3rd party games. Most gamers would have a ps4 or xbone aswell for all those 3rd party titles. So its really a non issue.

    1. I hate when people say that. They shouldn’t get any support at all then. I never bought a Nintendo console just for first party games.

  22. Well, I can’t exactly say he’s wrong at the moment. I mean I want to, but it’s just true. It’s mostly just used as an inventory/map, even when they could’ve easily used it as a tingle tuner for example on wind waker hd, it doesn’t do anything in DKCTF.. I think the best use so far has been NintendoLand (from what I’ve played so far), even Mario 3D Land didn’t give you your own screen on the gamepad (Would’ve been handy, though you kind of have to play together now so I don’t completely dismiss the choice there..), though I think the scan-thing from ZombiU was pretty neat :) Still, I hope to see more integration.. Also, I don’t mean to say there’s anything wrong with off-tv play ;D

    1. Oh, I meant he’s not wrong about the gamepad not being used that greatly, not about the wasting money, part, because I don’t feel like I wasted money to be honest.

  23. I love the gamepad and being able to play cod with another friend with both having their own screen online is freaken amazing! Not to mention being able to switch classes on the fly when I’m playing alone. Incredible best cod experience there is just wish we got dlc

  24. I agree it’s not perfect but got to give credit, Nintendo always trying to change the way we game! Sometimes they rock up well to early and developers eventually realise the potential. Sometimes to late, should the n64 of been disc based?

  25. I have a Wii U, xBox 360, PS3, and PS4.

The Wii U gets the most use, sometimes we use the game pad and sometimes we don’t but Im completely satisfied with my purchase and the titles available to date (seriously, the PS4 is NOT getting any play time at all and likely wont for a while).

You know what I love about the gamepad? Its a dedicated 2nd screen for co op play in Lego Marvel Super Heros. No split-screen on the tv = AMAZING.

  26. I agree. I thought the GamePad seemed a cool idea, but now it’s useless and annoys me and is never used for anything original or even mildly interesting. It would be nice if you at least had the option to not use it, but nope, it’s forced on you.
When even Nintendo can’t use their own gimmick well, you know it was a bad idea.

    1. The game pad is awesome for Donkey Kong – use it with pro controller and love it. Monster Hunter, Batman, Darksiders 2 it makes an awesome HUD. Windwaker and AC4 it is an amazing map screen. Plus it’s semi portable and built to take abuse.

  27. every next gen console from nintendo controller has been pretty bad — they are trying to make it origional and taking it to the next level, but its simply just bad design. n64 controllers were pretty good, but other than that…. kinda suckyhttp://num.to/5580*4223*5748

  28. Funny, another guy thinking that he was obligated to buy the Game Pad. I mean, if this guy had a knack of good sense, he would know that every Wii U unot contains a Game Pad and he could opt for not bouys the damn console.

Onto the definition of “using the Game Pad”, am I the only who is satisfied with uses like a small map or inventory? I don’t like pace breaker gimmicks, why people just keep thinking about complex and obnoxious uses for the Game Pad, can’t I have a traditional experience by using it?!?

  29. The Wii U Gamepad is used primarily like a DS and ideas for its uses rarely seem to be anything other than bland and boring. So i do agree if you don’t use the Gamepad’s tech in innovating ways it’s a waste of money, Although i do love the off screen feature as rarely as its used.

  30. Does anyone actually give a shit about this guy? I’ll take my Nintendo games on my gamepad any day over this person’s forgettable wiiware games. Just the ability to play my console games remotely is more than enough to make me feel satisfied with my purchase. My ps4, on the other hand, cost $100 more than my wii u, has no off-tv play unless I buy a vita, and didn’t come with a single game. Yeah, it’s got extra power under the hood, but it’s still just a gimped version of my pc.

  31. What would have solved this problem is if Nintendo packed a Wii U Pro controller in the box with Wii U, then everyone would have a choice. Nintendo should have packed an updated Wavebird controller in with the Wii. Now they should update the Wiimote and Nunchuck and pack them and the Pro controller and the Gamepad in with the Wii U, people like choices. Selling them separate doesn’t work.

  32. Really? What a dumbass! I used it for Pikmin 3 and it was really helpful! Fun to draw on, glad I can use it and not have it hooked up to the TV so that I can leave my Wii hooked to it to play Brawl. Plus I can plug headphones into it and play on a screen that won’t cause too much light in the room while someone is sleeping nearby.

  33. he is absolutely right… it’s too bad but he is… the gamepad is an after thought, even though I did like it in Zombie U and Batman… otherwise, it hasn’t found a real use, despite what I thought would have been good stuff in the Nintendoland metroid

  34. Yeah, I could agree. I mean, really. Think about it. Why did they MAKE something that developers aren’t USING and that we don’t NEED? Sure, it has its uses, like how it enables us to play our game now even when someone else needs the TV, but again, how much use does that REALLY have? Normally, a huge amount of us that own a game console ALSO own our own TVs, yeah? So WHY would other people be using OUR TVs? Practicality is slim, actual application is slimmer, need is minimal. Not saying it’s bad, just kind of unnecessary.

    1. I AM using it, and we don’t NEED ANYTHING related to video games. It’s all completely frivolous. Video game companies just have to figure out which frivolous, unnecessary thing people really WANT. Apparently Nintendo is struggling with that right now, but it’s not the first time they’ve been there, nor will it be the last.

  35. “That no-one uses” He lost his own statement by saying this simple line… Developers, developers, developers… they never learn…

  36. People can hate if they want. He probably hasn’t even held the damn thing. Sure its not used much by a lot of people, but its still an awesome controller. I guess he wants to have to pause the game and break gameplay to play his games…

  37. omg people stop with the gamepad its not even the problem so what if its not innovative neither is ps4 or xbox1 atleast its more innovative than the twins :/

    1. It’s not about innovation in this day and age. Innovation doesn’t make money as often as people want to think. For every famous artist, there’s a hundred other artists that aren’t making a dime off their art. Also, I would like to point you to a recent episode of Game Theory that touches on the Wii U’s problems:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS1p7W5dmBE It does a good job of pointing out where Nintendo kind of dropped the ball, and yes, the gamepad IS part of the problem. I’m also gonna point out that I’m a huge Nintendo fan(first system I ever owned was Nintendo, still have a Nintendo Wii, want to buy a Wii U, but money’s short atm), but logic is logic, no matter how much you don’t want to agree with it.

  38. the use i get out of it while surfing in the living room or for off TV play when the TV is occupied has more than made up for those 100$ already
any game that actually uses the gamepad is just the icing on the cake

  39. I have to agree with this guy; I know… not everygame should use the gamepad, not every kind of genre can be modified to use it properly, but The Wii U has been for over a year and I haven’t seen a game designed to make full use of the gamepad, Of course there’s Pikmin, Rayman Legends, but most games use it for things like “lets make them see the map on the gamepad”… No, that’s not right; look at all the awesome 3DS games, not everyone uses the bottom screen properly, but you can feel a variety of feelings playing with it… which the Wii U lacks; Can’t wait to Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, the full use of the gamepad in the next Zelda… I’m crossing my fingers for Star Fox and F Zero. I Love Nintendo, But sometimes it makes me wonder if the Wii U was really the right direction to go…

  40. I myself find the wii u gamepad extremely useful even just the basic ability to hit the home button during game play and browse the internet for help if i am stuck in a game and then after i have found the information i needed simply return to my game this particular multitasking ability in itself is greatly underrated in my own opinion.

    1. That guy is just ungrateful and lacks fantasy. Like you said, using the home button while in-game, combined with the second-screen, really streamlines the apps that you use while the game is paused. Imagine using Miiverse, internet browser etc. without having that touch screen.
The Gamepad is also really useful for many games, if it’s either for item management or map or even something more specific, it adds to the experience. And we have the off-screen play option, which is REALLY useful!

  41. Is he sure he didn’t think of the kinect when he was tweeting?
Besides, I really doubt the Wii U Gamepad costs > $100 to produce.

  42. I really hope Nicalis won’t cancel ‘The 90s Arcade Racer’. For a publisher to remark so snidely about a platform they’re supporting is not only unprofessional, but self-defeating. Maybe, he’s being sarcastic & ‘The 90s Arcade Racer’ will somehow utilize the gamepad. Or he has other Wii U titles up his sleeve that will . But to remark before a release-date has even been announced makes him sound like he’s now dropping support.
