Ubisoft Says There’s “A Possibility” Watch Dogs Wii U Will Release In 2014

Dominic Guay, a senior producer of Watch Dogs, has told Polygon that there’s a possibility that the long-awaited open world adventure will release on the Wii U in 2014. Ubisoft announced a date for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC versions earlier today. The game is coming May 27th on those platforms.

“Yeah it’s still alive,” he said. “We still haven’t defined a ship date for it, though. So it’s on hold, to a certain extent for shipping.”

He added that a 2014 ship date for that version of the game is still a “possibility.”

“We don’t have a specific ship date for it yet so it’s considered within the year,” he said. “So we’re going to look at that and we’re going to let people know as soon as we figure out an exact date for it.”

“We have our studio in Bucharest working on it, and we wanted that team to have the time to explore the GamePad and be able to have fun with it and see how far they could push it,” he said. “It’s also an interesting platform, because it has its own strength, which we want to take advantage of, and we didn’t want to delay all the other platforms for that one. So we’re going to take the time we need to make sure the game is good (technically) when we ship it and that it also, game design-wise, makes good use of the specifics of the Wii U.”

“I mean, for our game, when we play with everything being connected, we need to make smart use of it,” Guay said. “And also, the Wii U came along at some point in our production, so it planned through for it, and now to a certain extent we wanted to be ambitious with it, be able to go full-on and make full use of the platform. That’s why we’re taking more time, but it’s being worked on so that’s good.”

“It wasn’t running on Wii U initially,” he said. “They were the perfect team to do it. Our Bucharest studio is super strong, super strong engineers and I was impressed by how quickly they got to get the game running on the console. And they were so autonomous in doing it. Obviously we’re communicating and we’re working together, but they were so quick and smart in doing it, it still made sense for them to keep ownership. Obviously they’re using the same game content, so they’re not building other game content. It’s the same game content that we’ll adapt for the needs of the specific needs of Wii U. But at the core, same game, but they made all the technical adjustments for it.”

    1. Because the Wii U is not as profitable as the other platforms as of right now. (please don’t take this as flaming, it’s just going based off raw #’s.)

        1. he literally said that it’s on hold i.e. they’re currently not doing *anything* with it.. least of all making it the definitive version

          1. But that’s what the article you’re commenting says. On hold in the gaming world, means they’re not working on it currently. They’re waiting to see how well the game performs on other platforms and if Mario Kart can turn the Wii U around. I am guessing this will never reach Wii U. It’ll probably be cancelled in the beginning of June.

        2. PC version is actually the definitive version since they ported the PC version to consoles with downgraded graphics. The PC version looks so amazing

        1. To be fair, the Wii U is over a year old now, so it’s normal for them to have a bigger user base than a console that’s only been out for a few months, it wouldn’t be normal for it to have a smaller user base.

      1. This statement from Ubi kinda implies that it will release really-really late for WiiU….
        If so… THAT SUX ASS!!
        D:<
I may not get it any more…

      2. That’s the same BS they played when they delayed Rayman..way before the Wii U console came to light in retails and guess what? Thanks to their own dumbass decision to delay and release for the other intended platforms next to GTA5’s date which ironically those same platforms were waiting to buy GTA5 instead, they lost almost all of those sales they were hoping for and Wii U version still sold the most out of every versions which is the opposite of what Ubisoft thought.

You think they learned from that mistake? Not likely and apparently don’t give a damn anyway.

Its not that the console isn’t profitable. Its because of dumbass “slap in the face” decisions like this that turns gamers and sales away since Nintendo fans are apparently tired of the 3rd party making gimps, shortcuts and excuses with their ports and they’re mostly not that stupid to continue falling for it.

This game was Ubisoft’s last chance to redeem themselves after Rayman Legends and they blew it again the same fucking way as Rayman but in the opposite.

    2. Well, by that statement it sounds they have found an ambitious way to make use of the gamepad, looking forward to it

      1. Except with Rayman, ubisoft delayed the finished Wii U product to coincide with the rest of the console’s release date. They’re not going to delay XB1 and PS4 versions to coincide with the Wii U release date.

  1. ..and someone still wonders why people won’t buy Wii U? Finally getting some really cool games for Wii U, and then they’re released later or even not released at all. What the actual frick, Ubisoft!

    1. They are a big company, and companies seek to make money. The WiiU version will be the least profitable version, no matter when its release is going to be. 3rd party multiplat titles rarely ever sell well on Nintendo platforms and everyone knows that. It most likely won’t be any different with WiiU. Therefore, the WiiU versions importance is not too high for Ubisoft, their priority lies in the other next-gen platforms and even last-gen too. Because yes, the game will most likely sell better even on last-gen platforms, mainly due to the larger userbase.
      That is why.

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

But delaying it won’t help it at all. If they were to release the Wii U version before the others, people would be more inclined to buy it. That’s what they should do.

Keep in mind the game was/should have been completed back in Fall 2013. Now it’s coming out at the end of May.

  2. I just got an email from them and in it it says it is coming in 2014. I don’t know where you’re getting this possibility stuff. From what he said it sounds like it’s for sure this year.

I don’t mind the delay, it spouses like they’re trying to really use the Wii U like it should be used so, I’m happy. I’ll have plenty of Nintendo games to ride me over, haha.

    1. Sorry, I forgot to add that bit in. I’ve added it now.

He added that a 2014 ship date for that version of the game is still a “possibility.”

  3. I’m still keeping my Wii U preorder for this game. I don’t want it on another platform. I hope that the extra time makes great use of the gamepad.

  4. U dont read the article ? Ubisoft dont want the Wii U version to be like other versions…they want to do a unique version who will be using the Gamepad in a very good way for the game. I think thats why it takes more time than other consoles…and for me I think thats a great thing cuz Ubisoft want to use the Wii U 100 % so thats nice. Very hope they dont rush this one :)

    1. Yes, I think it’s important to give this version its due diligence. But then there’s the article posted after this, saying they pulled the team that was working on the Wii U version to come work on the other versions until they’re done. If they needed that team’s expertise to solve problems the other teams encountered, they should have only pulled one guy from the Wii U team, not the whole team. So, in a way, this ‘delay’ isn’t so that they can polish the Wii U version. It’s so that the other versions get all the attention to get them out as soon as possible, then eventually get back to working on the Wii U version. Bad call by Ubisoft in my opinion. Even in considering “broadest possible benefit” for the company, this decision isn’t that. Now, likely, the only people who will get the Wii U version are those that only have a Wii U. For those that have other systems as well as a Wii U, they’ll likely be like “Yeah, I already have the other version of that game and beat it. Why should I buy another copy of a game I already beat?”

  5. Their waiting to see if this game fails on the other platforms so they dont waste resources for wii u…

  6. Excuuuuuse me?? “… we didn’t want to delay all the other platforms for that one.” There’s a really sarcastic comment here about Rayman Legends that I simply can’t quite make out…

  7. Nintendo fanboys bitch when a game won’t be released on WiiU.
Nintendo fanboys bitch when a game is released on WiiU but doesn’t use the Gamepad.
Nintendo fanboys bitch when a game will be released later than other versions because the developer is actually trying to make the game cater to the Gamepad.

Hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. And then at the end of the day in the latter two cases Nintendo fanboys won’t buy the game which leads to the first case occurring over and over again. You only have yourselves to blame.

    1. You must be from Sony or Microsoft. You’re the only fanboy bitching here. The definitive version will come. Chill.

      1. Clearly you haven’t read comments on previous articles posted on this site – also, I don’t have any Sony or Microsoft consoles, but keep making false assumptions if you want.

    2. My guess is that the only wii u kowners who will be excited or even know about this game by the time it comes out r those who frequent gaming blogs…if the push it and market it big time and constantly repeat that the gamepad makes this THE version to o3n then it will sell well. If they dont it will sell poorly. Simple as that

    3. Mostly people bitch when Devs don’t release the game

      OR

release the game with gimped features, later than other consoles and NO advertising and then blame the platform for sales.

No one really cares if it uses gamepad well.

      1. Except it’s the responsibility of Nintendo to sell the system. If the userbase is small and they don’t know if the game will sell, they’ll either not release it on the system or they won’t put as much effort into it – hence the gimped features.

        1. The thing is this….Are you ready for the kicker

The Wii U userbase is not small.
Not in comparison to XBOne and PS4. Sold around the same as PS4 and over 2 million more than XBOne.

My post was in relation to software not selling well – especially Multiplat software – and thats up to publishers.

    4. He has a point there, why should we care about exclusives one console get, or when they release. All that matters are the games that do come out on the Wii U, and anticipating their release. If you want certain exclusives get the other consoles, Nintendo systems are not going to get every game in the world, and that’s not something to complain about. I have a 3DS, Wii U, PS3, PC, Microsoft Tablet, and iPhone for ALL my gaming needs. There’s no need for a console war just open yourself up to all consoles and enjoy all the games out there. Watchdogs is coming late for us, but you can either wait on it or get it on another console, sinple as that.

    5. Dude, go back to playing your XBetamax DOne’s TV game for dumbass achievements if it hasn’t caught fire already?

  8. Nintendo fanboys really need to look at the big picture. They aren’t release releasing watch dogs wii u version at the same time as the other consoles because :
A.) Mario kart releases around the same time. That would hurt their sales.
B.) delaying the game would also let them take a look at wii u sales after MK8, so if it’s still bombing then they’ll just not put their efforts into future projects on wii u.
C.) The wii u just isn’t profitable at the moment for third parties. I mean, even the last gen consoles sell more copies of their games in the same release dates (AC IV, Rayman legends on ps3, Splinter cell blacklist)

So don’t blame ubisoft for being a buisness at the end of the day, blame yourselves (the ones with a wii u that don’t buy third party games). If you want more games on wii u without getting gimped ports or later release dates, then BUY THIRD PARTY GAMES. Stop complaining and get your wallets out if you want anything to change. Don’t even try to call me a Sony/Microsoft fanboy since I own a wii u and not a ps4/xbone.

    1. You sound like a Sony or Microsoft fanboy. A real Nintendo fan would only buy the definitive version of Watch Dogs on the Wii U. Thus, the delay does not matter. Chill.

      1. You sound like a mindless Nintendo fanboy regurgitating the same ad hominem attacks and talking points.

      2. But the definitive version of Watch Dogs probably most likely won’t be on WIi U. It’ll probably be on PS4, the most powerful machine this generation, or PC, the most powerful machine period. I’ll be getting the Xbox one version either way, I don’t need the definitive version, and neither do Nintendo fans.

    2. And you saying something like Rayman Legends sold the most on PS3 just shows how ignorant you are on your research. Last we all checked, many PS3/360 gamers were waiting for and buying GTA5 around the same time thus making Rayman Legends delay plans a huge bust because GTA5 is the most anticipated title of September and that Wii U still sold the most copies out of other version and being called the definitive version.

Get your twisted facts straight Sony fanboy and STFU with “gamers are to blame for not buying late or gimped multiports” nonsense which is self explanatory of why those POS ports aren’t selling. Compare Wii U ports without DLC, without modes, without anything missing compare to the past full packaged releases and don’t give me that “small install base” BS because I’m talking about the very start of the new console life itself. How the fuck do you even think that logic works? Imagine if the same happens to your favorite console. You’ll feel the same shit regardless of how well or poor a unit does. This has been happening way before Wii U came to light and only a few months they’ve been doing this shit consistently and deliberately to create an excuse to not support the system and also blame everything about it hoping morons like you will bite it and flock elsewhere like PS4 that has no original games or XBetamax that can’t do 1080p, destroyed many fans trusts with DRM, forced a stupid ass camera nobody cares about and even explodes when turned on. Unlike you, Nintendo fans, at least, are not THAT stupid and at least Wii U runs at 1080p easier than Xbox and fucking works with no “Red Ring of Death”, Blue Screen or “Jet Engine” sound problems dipshit.

  9. Vote with your wallet, don’t put up with 3rd party bullshit, don’t become a consumer that just impulse buys a game hoping that the developer will bring more games to your system of choice, fuck that shit.

The most important piece of advice though is, if a 3rd party game doesn’t come to the Wii U or your console of choice, get a fucking gaming PC and buy that shit on steam at 75 percent off. That’s what I do, unless I really don’t want that game, then I just buy a better game from a different developer, either way I win.

  10. I’d like to be “righteously indignant” about this but seeing as I didn’t thoroughly support Ubisoft’s titles on Wii U like AC3, AC4 and ZombiU I can’t really talk.

  11. Im gonna wait for the wiiu version. Somebody has got to support these devs you know, while you guys are thinking ,that all games that are not on the wiiu are inferior.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

You should buy a game because you want it, not because you want to support someone who never will care about you…

      1. but when the game actually looks good , you have know reason to get it for another system. You call yourself “commander” , yet you havent bought the wiiu and you claim every other game not on the wiiu to be bad. Well…. your wrong.

        1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

          Looks good in what way?…

Graphics doesn’t say anything to me if that’s what you are refering to or D-movie cliche games…

            1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Because Bayonetta 2 showed gameplay, Batman do not, and most often games that only comes out to the PS or Xbox platforms never shows gameplay but a cinematic cheap advertisement to lure stupid fools into buying them…

If Nintendo only showed cinematic trailers of their games, I probably wouldn’t even be a Nintendo “fanboy” today…

              1. You want me to post some gameplay vids of watch dogs ?.

Some gems like last of us, uncharted , red dead etc never came to any nintendo system .. you think those are bad too then ?

                1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I never said Watch Dogs was a bad game, I’m saying we have been screwed over by the Ubisoftians for too long now and this game just utterly bores me now…

                  Hearing about it that is…

And even if it turns out to be great, why would I want a gimped version that is delayed…

        2. whoa whoa whoa, hold on. This Nintendo Commander guy doesn’t even have a Wii U. This guy’s a phony. A great big phony! I kid, all jokes aside. He should probably help out Nintendo and get a Wii U. Nintendo needs all the Wii U sales it can get at this point :/.

  12. great, will be out much later than the other versions and at full price while the others are heavily discounted by then. Most people who were interested will have already played it. I’m convinced the reason it is delayed is because if it came out at the same time, and looked as good, but also used the gamepad and was the definitive versions, it’d piss off Microsoft and Sony so they are screwing Nintendo instead.

    1. The other versions can use an iPad if you really want that lame gimmick.

Won’t look any where near as good as ps4 or xbone.

      And will be cancelled.

Third party games don’t sell on wii u.

    1. everyone knew tho that the reason given for rayman legens was utter shite

this time their sort of honest.. they’re basically saying that wii u customers are 2nd class customers just with prettier words

  13. Pingback: Ubisoft Says Watch Dogs Wii U Has “Been Paused” While They Concentrate On Other Versions | My Nintendo News

  14. Yeah and they will sell the game, that is one year old at the same price as a new one when all other platforms have got an price drop.

  15. Pingback: Watch Dogs - 4 Nun soll dies alles falsche - Forumla.de

  16. While they take their time for the gamepad features, at the same time they won’t get much sales because of this delay.

    1. you don’t actually still believe there will be any special gamepad features? after this statement?
you’ll get a map and an inventory at best.. certainly nothing special

i can agree on the sales however.. they will be abysmal.. and guess who they’ll blame.. certainly not themselves

  17. You didn’t want to delay all the other versions just for the Wii U version…yet you have no problem when its the other way around like with Rayman Legends….oh please. Take your shitty Watch Dogs and leave the gaming industry. Unless I see a Red Steel 3 then you have nothing I want.

  18. a *possibility*? really?
i think there’s a possibility than you can go fuck yourselves ubisoft

if you think wii u customers are not worth your time then you are not worth my money
i could buy the game on the PC, but decided i’d rather have it on the wii u
now i won’t buy it on either platform

    well done

  19. Not sure whether to be Happy or Pissed off.

But still – has there been a multi plat game that released on the Wii U that was:
    1) On time
    2) Had fully fledged features
    3) Had a decent marketing campaign
    ???

      1. Ghosts is the closest, but treyarch did the work and not infinity ward.

I wish nintendo would just make a console that companies could develope for all 3 at the same time…

        1. I still will never get over the fact that after launch there were Banners and game cases everywhere in my local game shop for Ghosts for all consoles, except one…WiiU. Behind the counter lined cases of XBOne & PS4for the game whilst console bundles stacked up around the store for it.

And there…on the bottom shelf…of the smallest aisle…One lonely CoD Ghosts case for Wii U, 1 Damn case. On… The …Bottom…Shelf. During the week that game launched.

  20. The WiiU version will sell less; look at it from this point, Rayman Legends has THE definitive version on Wii U, but It sold poorly, even if Watch Dogs has THE definitive version it will sell poorly too, It could sell even less than Rayman, ’cause Rayman it’s a Kid’s game (I don’t mean it is for kids, but it has quite more orientation to kids than Watch Dogs). IMO

    1. it still outsold the ps3 and xbox360 versions, which, considering that they actually pushed the game to a *very* busy season of the year games wise and considering the much larger install base of the other platforms, is quite an achievement

and naturally watch dogs will sell less on the wii u than on any other platform if they push it back several months
it doesn’t even have the chance to prove its worth that way

and no rayman legends is not a “kids” game by any means.. for fucks sake why do people always associate cartoon graphics with “kids” …it’s pathetic
any kid would scream in agony when confronted with the level of difficulity that rayman offers

      1. I said “It’s not a kids game” what I meant It’s the cartoon like style it’s more appealing to kids; Imagine this scenario: A Kid Walking in Walmart suddenly see the cover or Rayman Legends and next to it It’s Watch Dogs, which onw would he choose and tell his or her parents “daddy! I want that game” ?? The cartoon like cover right? That’s what I meant

        1. even if that was the case why would that have any effect on sales? and now please don’t try to tell me that the wii u is a “kids console” or i’ll start pulling out my hair.. or yours

          1. It’s not a Kids Console dude, but a huge part of its Install base are kids, I love the Wii U man, and I think it’s a great console; but It needs more push, more awesome games than the ones that It already has, I can’t wait to see some of the new zelda *crossing my fingers to see something this year*

            1. “but a huge part of its Install base are kids”

do you have ANY proof at all for that statement? anything? no? thought so

people claim this bullshit all the time but the funny thing is that they have *zero* evidence to go for it

when i went to the wii u events prior to the wii u’s launch i certainly didn’t see just kids
mostly adults and only very few younger teens

  21. You know….the game could actually suck ass….and after endless poor reviews on other systems….no wii u owners will care….

    1. to be honest i already don’t care anymore.. i’ve been quite excited for the game.. even after the announced delay.. but ubisoft managed to whittle every last bit of excitement i had for that game down to a stump.. by now i’m fairly confident that it’s not going to live up to any of the hype

  22. I was one of the first to moan about ubisoft not releasing watch dog at the same time as others platform. cause I did not believe they will modify the game to optimise the Wii U hardware.it also make sense to do that. If they really take advantage of the wii U gamepad I will buy that version (if they don’t charge a fortune for that). By the time they release that version they will hopefully correct any bug detected on other platforms. fair enough for me they try to make the best for the wii U and I take it as an apologise for rayman

  23. don’t get your hopes up for the wiiu version of this game. no need to suffer tremendous disappointment when and if the game releases on wiiu.

  24. Did I read that right? They said they can’t get the game running on the Wii U console at first? That basically explains lack of 3rd party support as it really takes more time, effort and resources for a Wii U version. I know that the architecture is a little bit different but it seems that its really that hard technically for devs to support. Nintendo should take note for their next console.

  25. BULLSHIT!! They WILL gonna deliver the Wii U version still in 2014 (and still in the 1st semester) because it’s an OBLIGATION. Why Nintendo consumers will need do wait for more than a year, MORE THAN A YEAR (since the game should come out in 2013) in order to play Watch Dogs?
I still want to play this game, but is’s very sad that Ubisoft don’t let me do this.

  26. So, it means that the Wii U version will be better.

Sorry, but then you put more resources for the Wii U, no need to delay it.

But I think these guys thought “well, it’s easy to port our PS4 or PS3 version to the PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, but the Wii U one won’t sell good, so let’s delay it so people pay attention to it, let’s release it 2 months later, and say it has more work on it, so it will sell better than just released with the rest or it could be outshined by the other versions.:.

I think they want to release it in a separate way to people pay more attention to it and it sells.

  27. Watch_Dogs was supposed to be part of a PS4 launch bundle, so Ubisoft does have an obligation to fulfill that already broken promise. & since the X1’s architecture is so similar, the game can easily be ported there.

A delay already hurt their position in the stock market. Ubisoft, like many companies, are beholden to shareholders.

Most 3rd parties are still clinging to the 7th gen. W/ their obsession for “AAA” games & multi-platting, they can’t afford not to.

Add PC & Wii U = 6 platforms they’re trying to reach, & that for 1 game. Wii U’s architecture is unique & it’s facing similar hurtles the PS3 did in its initial years. Alas, consoles faulter in this current climate.

Watch_Dogs is the only multi-plat I’m interested in (wanted Rayman Legends before the BS). Sorry guys, ’tis my fault. Once I get excited about something, it turns sour. If it releases on Wii U (& is good), I’ll likely buy it. Otherwise, I’ll continue to rely on Nintendo & indies for my Wii U needs. Nice to have a 3DS, though, too.

  28. Seeing a slow but steady stream of Wii U sales, it is good to see a company try to take advantage of that the GamePad can offer for game play.

A game like Watchdogs seems perfect for a game like this.

I haven’t played the Wii U version of Deus Ex, but maybe that is an example of how to add in elements specific to the Nintendo system’s abilities.

  29. Pingback: Ubisoft Reconfirms Watch Dogs Is Still Coming To Wii U | My Nintendo News

  30. I was going to get Watch_Dogs on Wii U day one or within the following week or month, but now I’ll just wait & see how well it sells on Wii U before buying the game. If it sells great, I’ll buy it. If it sells like shit, I won’t buy it. I don’t want to buy the game, love it, and want the sequel only to find out the sequel won’t come because the first one didn’t sell well.
