NPD: Donkey Kong Helps Drive Wii U Sales, Bravely Default Outpacing Fire Emblem

Strong new releases helped sales of Wii U software and Nintendo 3DS software in February increase by more than 180 percent and more than 25 percent, respectively, over the same month last year. Wii U software sales were driven by the Feb. 21 launch of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which sold more than 130,000 combined physical and digital units in its first eight days on the market. This helped sales of Wii U hardware increase by nearly 25 percent over the same month last year.

In early 2013, Fire Emblem Awakening launched for Nintendo 3DS and became one of the surprise hits of the year. Bravely Default, which launched for Nintendo 3DS on Feb. 7, improved on the launch of Fire Emblem Awakening by more than 10 percent, selling more than 200,000 combined units in just over three weeks.

Other sales milestones achieved by Nintendo in February include:

  • Bravely Default and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze finished as the No. 2 and No. 4 best-selling software SKUs for the month of February.
  • Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for the Nintendo 3DS system sold more than 130,000 combined units in their fifth month on the market. This brought the life-to-date total to more than 3.4 million combined units in the United States alone.

Over the next few months, Nintendo will launch a series of games from fan-favorite franchises including Yoshi’s New Island (Nintendo 3DS, March 14), Disney Magical World (Nintendo 3DS, April 11), Mario Golf: World Tour (Nintendo 3DS, May 2), Kirby: Triple Deluxe (Nintendo 3DS, May 2) and Mario Kart 8 (Wii U, May 30).

      1. This is why the Wii U needs a main series Pokemon game developed by GameFreak. Those 3.4 million gamers would eat it right up.

    1. You haven’t played it or you’re just nostalgia blind, in terms of gameplay and level design the game is much more fleshed out and allows for proper co-op

  1. Guess it kind of figures that a game attached to Square Enix would outpace Fire Emblem.

Oh well, both Awakening and Bravely Default are fantastic games, easily the best 2 on 3DS.

    1. Well, some series are well accepted, and others aren’t. DK is just one of those that other countries embraced more than Japan. Retro Studios games in particular have been far more receptive in the US than Japan.

  2. I still have to pick up this game, looks like a lot of fun. I’m kinda disappointed it doesn’t use any of the Gamepad’s features though.

  3. Despite having a Wii U though, I’ll be passing on Tropical Freeze. I have great concerns over the fact that I’m hearing that it’s an unbearably hard game.

      1. Hey, that hurts. I’m a Nintendo fan through and through. I don’t own any Sony systems. But the DK games never really appealed to me. I like Kirby and Mario though.

        1. Don’t listen to that guy. He’s an idiot. I can tell you one thing for sure though, me also being a Wii U owner, am also concerned about the difficulty.

          1. I don’t mind “reasonably challenging” games. In fact, I prefer them. However, when I briefly played Donkey Kong Country Returns, it was borderline “ragequit difficulty” and I dislike those.

          2. You should try the game first. Don´t pay attention to those stupid reviewers who are saying the game is difficult, because it´s not. You don´t have to make 100 % of it, but if you try to do that, then you can be sure you´ll have a good challenge. This latest DK game is not particularly hard as many other platformers out there.

          3. I guess we have all kinds. I NEED the difficulty in order to be excited about it. And, well, the visuals and music look cool. But it won’t be fun for me unless it’s a challenge, and New Super Mario Bros. U was lacking in that department for me.
I was also very happy with how many extra, challenging levels that Super Mario 3DWorld had.
            *spoiler alert*
World 8 and beyond were my favorites.

  4. awesome!!!!!!! though if fe and bravely default where sold at same time with same install base fe would be bigger but NIIIICCCCCCEEEE

    1. The 180% software sales increase for February was for the 3DS. The Wii U’s software sales increased by 25%, compared to last year’s February. Not nearly as well of an improvement compared to the 3DS, but it is something.

  6. With no Wii U games until May, the Wii U sales is going into another software drought and sales will be non-existent.

    1. Im actually glad they won’t release any good games until may since there are still lots of wii u games that I haven’t bought or finished playing.

  7. It’s painful to think, that, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as a third party game. I can imagine people playing this on Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles.

  8. Great game for solo play. The multiplayer is annoying if you play with someone that doesn’t believe in teamwork.

About the “Iwata dies of cancer” comment…
Please don’t ruin my day. I truly admire that man.

I will cry the day Miyamoto, Iwata or Morgan Freeman die. Just thinking about it made me sad already.

  9. To all people worried about the difficulty, don’t let that keep you away from tropical freeze. Yes, it can be difficult, but never does it feel impossible. Its one of the best 2D platformers I’ve played in ten years. There are so many tooks to help with the difficulty. And when you get throufh those difficult aspwcts, it’s one of the most rewarding feelings ever. Seriously, the first two WERE my favorite games of all time, until I ayed Tropical Freeze. Dont miss out.

  10. So the next Wii U big release is in May? At the end of the month? WTF! Nintendo realese a game which helped boost sales and instead of making sure the ball stays rolling it’s taking time off.

  11. Bravely Default is a great game and so is Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. It proves that there is more to video games than just FPS.

  12. I must admit, this new DKC:Tropical Freeze does look pretty cool. But unfortunately, I probably won’t own it until/unless the price drops. Even if I have to buy it used. I’m a cheapskate.

  13. Looking forward to all of these games… I just have to figure out which bank I’m going to have to rob, so that I’ll have the funds.

  14. I enjoyed it more than mario 3d world and I rated mario 3d world 9.6/10. DKTF 9.8/10! Cant wait for Zelda Wii U!!!!!!!!!
