Aonuma Suggests Next Zelda Game Could Feature A Top Down View

The Official Nintendo Magazine has published an interesting interview with The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma. One of the snippets taken from the interview is that the team is considering using the top down view in future Zelda games and could included the forthcoming Wii U version. We won’t know for sure till E3.

ONM: What did you learn from making this game? Can you use any of these ideas in future titles? For example, the Merge (with walls) ability is amazing and it would be a shame if it was never used again.

EA: I think the top-down view made the ability to enter the wall really interesting. Also, in this game, I feel we’ve found a new direction in regards to the potential use of the good old top-down view for Zelda. It’s the kind of point we will take in good consideration when thinking about the next Zelda game

    1. No… not for a console Zelda. Mabey for 3DS but not this upcoming Zelda WiiU game… as it would be a major back stab to fans hoping for an HD ZELDA and for waiting so long.
The top view thing will not implement or take advantage very much of the WiiU’s power and considering that Hyrule Warriors is in a normal view it would be weird for the actual Zelda U to be a top view game. The game should stick with its normal view, along with more open worlds and some sort of Online interactions and maybe a mini dungeons that features this top view feature…just in case this an itch ppl wanna scratch! :D

          1. I think you guys are reading too much into it.
Read it in the context of the question as well as the topic of the article: ALBW.

Also, IN THIS GAME, I feel we’ve found a new direction in regards to the -Potential Use of the good old Top-Down View- for Zelda. It’s the kind of Point we will take in good Consideration when thinking about the next Zelda game.

It was about the Ability becoming interesting because of the View. Thus, idea like this well be taken into consideration for future games. That what I got.
*note: is there a way to underline text*

          2. It wasn’t implied, they are talking about a 3DS Zelda game so when he refers to the new Zelda game with top down view of course he’s referring to the next 3DS or handheld Zelda, not a home console one!

They are talking about a 3DS Zelda game and handheld Zelda games, no the home console ones!

            1. He said nothing about whether it be handheld or console. Or whether full top-down style game or not. It doesn’t necessarily have to mean a full top-down game, it could also mean just portions of the game. Or if top-down will be in the next game or not.

The question was about what he LEARNED from making the game and can those learned IDEAS (such as merge-wall ability) make it to future games.

              Here’s my shitty paraphrase:
1st: I think((learned/idea)) the top-down view is what made the ‘enter-wall’ ability interesting. 2nd: In addition, while making ALBW, we’ve found(learned) a new way of handling the potential use(idea) of top-down view in Zelda games. 3rd: That is the type of detail/element(ideas) we’ll think carefully about in next Zelda game.

EA: I think the top-down view made the ability to enter the wall really interesting. Also, in this game, I feel we’ve found a new direction in regards to the potential use of the good old top-down view for Zelda. It’s the kind of point we will take in good consideration when thinking about the next Zelda game

      1. As an alternative though … they can use a top down feature on the GPad along with ,onscreen-side buttons, that can switch to features like inventory, maps, etc.
But again… most fans including me will prefer the traditional point of view! :p

        1. That would make sense- it could be like a map that shows Link’s live moves-like the gamepad feature in Mario Chase in Nintendo Land, where half the screen has a topdown look of you, and there’s a map, but this time just the top down screen, but bigger. Or maybe it’s a bit like the underground stuff in Skyward Sword.

      2. Have you ever played a little game called ocarina of time? This is an example of a 3D Zelda that includes some top down gameplay. Zelda’s garden. Or majoras mask’s Deku fortress.
I highly doubt the entire game will be top down. But to get butt hurt at the idea of including different views to accomplish different goals is simply obtuse. These men and women are professionals and no matter what they make the game will be amazing and enjoyable. Plus stealth sequences with top down views are generally chalking as well as fun and a great change up.

      3. The normal Zelda view is top down. Unless you’re one of those teeny boppers who didn’t start playing Zelda until Ocarina of Time.

    2. OFCOURSE IT WONT BE FOR CONSOLE ZELDAS PEOPLE!!!!!!!! they could make one IF THEY CONSIDER IT in the future for a handheld.

NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT . have a good day.

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Please no ..

Jesus christ make it like the E3 Demo we saw. Show off the power of the Wii U… Fuck ill be so angry if its a Link between worlds re-skin.

  2. Jesus Christ I hope Zelda U isn’t a top-down view game. That would be one of the worst possible things Nintendo could do.

    1. Not really, think about games like Diablo. Everyone loves that and its top down. Puzzles in top down view are more fun and intriguing and dungeon crawling is fun this way. Now imagine that the game is top down view, but when you go into a battle or boss battle the view changes perspective to a more traditional 3rd person view. Also puzzles can work in both forms. From the top down view you see one perspective, but in 3rd person view you see different aspects to the puzzle. How about boss fights, where if you are in 3rd person view you cannot see the week point until you go to top down view. It makes the possibilities endless. I am for this if they go this route

  3. He means the next portable Zelda game. The Wii U Zelda game is already in development and they obviously wouldn’t make a console game top down.

  4. you ppl make me so fucking mad WHO CARES IF ITS 3D OR TOP DOWN THEY ARE BOTH AMAZING GAMES THAT HAD ONE AND THE OTHER THE ONE THING THAT WOULD REALLY SUCK IS A SIDE SCROLLING ZELDA! *looks at Zelda II* <_<

    1. That is actually a very classic Zelda game for me. Nothing wrong with Zelda II , I grew up on that title.

  5. People, don’t forget the first few console Zelda games. I know technology was limited but you still love them right? Hugs!

    1. Yeah people are starting to under appreciate the Zelda series roots. Back then it was hardware limitations yes, now it can make for great gameplay in some puzzle or dungeon structures.

  6. They are still deciding if it’s going to be top down or 3d? Is this game ever going to get made? I was hoping it would get released some time next year.

  7. How many of you guys want that e3 demo Zelda? It looked freaking gorgeous and I would LOVE for that to be the next game.

    1. I would definitely love for it to be like the tech demo. Why not? New Super Mario Bros Mii was a tech demo that eventually became New Super Mario Bros U. If it goes top down though it won’t hurt me I grew up on the series starting back to LoZ on NES so it’s something I was into and used to.

  8. Only if the Gamepad had the top down view while the TV simultaneously had the normal 3D view that all the consoles have had since Ocarina in Time.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

      ….Genius.

They could use the different perspectives in their puzzles. Might be gimmicky but every Zelda has puzzles based around their hardware’s main feature.

  9. PLEASE NO. Top Down view for Zelda LBW was awful in my opinion. Zelda Wii U needs to be phenomenal to get people to realize the true potential for Wii U. An open world like Ocarina-Twilight Princess would be amazing

  10. We need a another full 3D Zelda. And not just a linear one like the Wii games. I’m talking huge open world here. Vast exploration. Maps as big as Skyrim and GTA V. (Exaggerating it but you get the point. XD) My all time favorite game is Zelda OOT. We need another one of those. Zelda in it’s high definition glory. Make it happen!

  11. If he pulls that crap with the Wii U Zelda, then the series is dead to me. LBW was full of crap. Bring more things like Wind Waker.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Not only that, the Wii U is dead and should either be replaced or just I don’t know…

      Whatever…

  12. Ugh… please, stop this backwards thinking. What in the hell is the point of making the jump to 3D and all the innovations and evolutions made in past Zelda titles if you’re just gonna say “fuck them all” and make it a top down view?

Yahtzee makes an excellent point… THIS right here is bad nostalgia. It’s a reluctance to move on from the past. Especially considering we’ve ALREADY moved on past this with the 3D games… why go back to it?

I mean, fucking hell, even Mario’s suffered from bad nostalgia recently. Super Mario 3D World was fun…but it really did move backwards. It was mostly a 3D game designed with 2D level designs in mind. You could move in 3D, but you were limited to moving in 8 directions (yes, because fuck the analog stick which allowed you to precisely move in 3 dimensions, LET’S JUST USE A D-PAD LOL), the camera angle was limited to three different isometric positions… so gone was another major evolution… free 3D camera control that allowed you to see what the hell you were doing… and hell, gone is the ability to explore in 3 dimensions… one of the MAIN REASONS the series moved into 3D. This is bad nostalgia. It doesn’t evoke… it just refuses to move on from old, limited times.

    1. I agree completely. I don’t mind a little nostalgia here and there, but now it looks like Nintendo is trying too hard to rely on their past.

    2. The 8 direction thing was done because the Wii U analog stick is missing the octagonal design of past controllers. That helped a lot in 3D games that required precision platforming. At least the camera never got in the way of anything, like in super mario 64. It was a revolution back then, but by today’s standards, it’s too jerky. Also, Mario 64’s levels are way too empty, more than I remembered. 3D World was packed with obstacle course type goodness from start to finish. I just don’t see nintendo doing a Mario 64 type game, ever. They’re past that.

  13. Miyamoto: “This is an HD system, our first HD system, and we want to create a real HD Zelda game for it.”

Aonuma: “I’d also like to be able to bring the experience of being able to explore the Great Sea however you want to locations other than the sea.”

These are in no way confirmations that Zelda Wii U will be in 3D, but come on… Could you imagine exploring the Great Sea in 2D???

  14. No context he is talking about the current zelda on wii u. He sound like he is talking about adding more depth to more zelda top downs, when they work on another

    1. I hope you’re right, but Aonuma does say “the next Zelda”, and the next Zelda coming out is the one for Wii U.

  15. ……… this website didn’t go down to shit. That article about the smash creator liking ps4 had some of the most embarrassing people commenting. This has the most pathetic group of people on any website i’ve been too, at least it was interesting before but it seems that isn’t the case……. just a bunch of losers damage controlling.

    1. True, would be nice to discuss without fanboyism for a moment even the article about Sony praisin 3DS was full of damage controllin fanboys.

  16. I think there will be some topdown elements thrown in WiiU Zelda but now way in hell the game will be fully played that way. Even in ocarina of time there was part where you played from topdown perspective.

  17. Pingback: Next Zelda may be Topdown

  18. I think the top-down style should be left for handheld consoles, while the precedent sent by OoT should be followed for console titles…

  19. HAHAHA! This just shows most people that come here are kids with no reading comprehension at all.

They are talking about a handheld Zelda game and talking about using this for FUTURE handheld Zelda games!

And if he uses this in the home console version it would be like in Ocarina Of Time that it’s for a garden and that’s it!

But now people exaggerate and for some reason they think he’s talking about Zelda U, when they are talking about handheld Zelda games, and also people here think he said the next Zelda game will be all in top down view! XD

Another day of stupidity in My Nintendo News…

    1. Sure they were talking about albw but they said the NEXT zelda game which could or could not be on the wii u.

  20. He was talking about the next handheld Zelda game, they were talking about 3DS Zelda games, he never said it was for the Wii U. This site put it in there.

And even if he meant the Wii U version, it could be like in OOT like in the garden. Anyway, of course Zelda for Wii U is almost finished and they are already thinking about the next handheld one!

    1. Whoa now. I believe that’s a yougner Luke Duke jumping in that Prius. Nice work. Makes me want to pay a visit in mis-matched winter wear and snuggle with that big ol’ dog.

  21. I want to see a Zelda game with vast worlds to explore and realistic people (like in Assassin’s Creed). I want to see Link and Zelda etc. more human-like than ever before. This is what I’ve been thinking about while playing Assassin’s Creed III. I love the giant world that you can explore, and the realistic feel it has. Though I’m not a fan of getting lost. Which I have many times in this game.

  22. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. I don’t mind reusing Wind Waker or Skyward Sword’s styles, but damn it, stop regressing to the fucking SNES era.

  23. Please no. It was OK to revisit the top-down view for LBW, but I feel like it was ultimately held back by that design choice. Keep the past in the past, Zelda has evolved into a game with 3D movement and it’s all for the better. I would lose sooo much respect for the Zelda series if Nintendo chose to devolve yet ANOTHER series and go with a top down view. Don’t ruin a good thing Nintendo, please please don’t.

  24. Please don’t do that. Not for a console Zelda game. Top down view at this point should only be for handheld Zelda games.

    1. … Oh god that comment of yours is so moronic I think it gave me brain damage…. yep… I smell grey matter….

If you’d read the article again…. he says they might use it for the Wii U Zelda game….

  25. No… just, no, top down is fine for handheld Zelda games, A Link Between Worlds, fine, Minish Cap, no problem, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, I can live with, but a top down modern console Zelda is a terrible idea, the Wii U is capable of doing an incredible experience of Zelda fun and you want to wreck that with a stupid top down gameplay?

  26. hope is a 3d view throught most of the game if not all and hope the story is good to get me really sucked in

  27. As well as there are old-school 2D mario and newer 3D Mario , and even 2.5D-ish (3D Mario World) there will be both 2D Zelda and 3D Zelda, ALBW is kind of 2.5D-ish too, and they will evolve separateiy but sharing influences.
The 3D games might even evolve into two separate games with the introduction of Occulus Rift technology: “old-school” third person and “new-line” first person.
Maybe there will even be a motion controlled branch on the tree of Zelda, following Skyward Sword that many like but few bought.
So there will be a lot of options and the consumer decides, with his wallet, wich one will be Nintendos priority.
As for art styles there seem to be three main directions, ALTtP and ALBW with it stylized childish looks, WW with the Cartoonish look, used in many DS games, and the “realistic” style from OoT and TP. (is SS thr middleway?
There are hard times coming for conservative Zelda lovers.

  29. the only reason i didnt buy link between world or whatever the name was for 3ds, was because of the graphic style. its important to me and 3D games even on 3ds are important. If nintendo makes top-down zelda on WiiU it will be just pathetic

    1. ALBW was a bloody good game, albeit it was easy and didn’t take long to beat, the style didn’t bother me, but to put a top down view Zelda game on a home console in this day and age is lazy on the developers part, the Wii U is capable of doing much more powerful stuff and not using that power is just wasted

      1. i totally agree. i actually think that even 3ds is capable of normal 3D games, and it can be done in not a too ambitious way(ocarina of time remake showed that). nintendo will fuck it up if they make wiiu zelda top-down x_x but i dont think they will do that. its probably for another 3ds zelda someday, with again locked 60fps with 3D on.

  30. To me “the next Zelda game” is misread, its meaning is more like “the next game in the saga in the fashion of the one we are talking about (ALBW)”

  31. Ok, I could see it going top-down, but only if it’s totally open world and HUGE. Otherwise it needs to go 3rd person open world, but darker than previous titles, and what would a Zelda set in FUTURE HYRULE (high tech Hyrule!) look like? :D

  32. I hope they don’t do this for the next console Zelda game. The last thing we need is Nintendo getting the bright idea to create a “New” Legend of Zelda series to follow with their other series franchise: New Super Mario Bros.

    1. Exactly, it means we still don’t know what the next zelda will be. All we can know from the interview is Aonuma is thinking about stuff.

  33. ???? yes its been in development for years now and their going to show off a preview this e3 also they were just about to show it last e3 but pulled it out at the last second because they wanted to show the games that were farther in development.

  34. Aonuma quit dicking around and give us the serious, “Skyrim” level graphics Legend of Zelda we have all been waiting for! Enough of this nonsense!

  35. I really hope that they do not go topdown for any console LoZ games. The top down zelda games are still good, but they are nothing com compared to the ones who take full advantage of all three dimentions.

  36. Link Between Worlds was a great, fun Zelda game with a harken back to the original Zelda where you could go wherever you wanted. But… I would have enjoyed it even more if I could have actually played the game from a 3rd person view with the camera BEHIND Link. I wasn’t a fan of the top down view. If the view had a tilt to it to where I could easily see Link’s face, I’d have enjoyed the view more. I hate having a direct overhead, bird’s eye view. In fact, I hope Zelda U doesn’t have it period. Not even for stealth areas. A top down view for stealth removes most of the challenge, to be honest. But I can live with the direct overhead view, even though I prefer a more diagonal overhead view, as long as it sticks to handheld titles.
