In a recent interview with GameSpot Sonic Boom developers Big Red Button have spoken about the challenges facing the team when they came up with their original character concepts and designs.
“We experimented with different colors and surface features on the characters, such as fur or scales, and quickly Sonic Team came back with their discomfort of that. They were great guardrails for us to understand when we were deviating too far from the character. Without their input, the character would have been a lot more alien and different from what Sonic is known for.” Discomfort may be putting things mildly, particularly in the case of Takashi Iizuka, the current head of Sega’s Sonic Team in Japan. As Rafei recalled, “Early on, when we had our first review of all the crazy things we wanted to try, Iizuka-san came down to Los Angeles and looked through all the different concepts.”
“I felt sorry for the guy because sometimes he couldn’t actually look at the screen–it was too traumatic seeing all the crazy stuff we wanted to do. Over the course of that meeting, when we were coming up with new ideas, we had a very sincere–just two adults talking–conversation about why a character should or should not wear pants, and that was a very surreal moment in my life and my career,” Rafei continued. “But it helped us understand the rules of clothing in this universe. Any small adjustment went a very long way, so we had to be very careful.”

The fact that they haven’t yet gotten over the redesigns is only further proof that they are in fact bad.
And really this is exactly the type of thing that’s been coming out of the west in droves, it’s pathetically generic.
Take Ben 10 for example, in its most recent one there’s Ben the cheeky main character, Gwen the “teehee I’m so hip and indepwendent xD” girl, and the “guy with wide shoulders and sooo buff” Kevin.
Now lets look at another example of exactly this. The new Pac-man show.
You have “the Pac” the cheeky main character personality, the Pink “teehee I’m so hip and indepwendent xD” girl personality, and the “guy with incredibly wide shoulders” buff stereotype Red guy.
And now we have Sonic the cheeky main character persona, Amy the “teehee I’m so hip and indepwendent xD” girl personality, and the “huge guy with incredibly would shoulders” buff stereotype Knuckles.
Copy pasted personalities having any uniqueness sucked right out of them, edgy pointless designs, and overall an unoriginal bore.

I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing at all. But in some instances it prevents people from judging something on its merits. People punish games/movies/whatever for not just being exactly like the original that they love when it’s entirely possible the new one is just as good, even if it is different.

If the original sonic team disliked it as well, then that has to mean something.

How are those arguments supporting a bad design of a “cartoon” character? MOST cartoon characters ARE out of proportion (Crimson Chin, Mario, Wonderful 101, The ORIGINAL Knuckles design, etc…)

If anything is different, it means that anything differs somehow from a reference.

If one character was intended to have a specific design, and if that design was consolidate over the years, that design becomes a reference. And, as a reference, it MUST be followed and respected. Period.

when it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it. The newer games have poor level design, framerate issues, glitchy/unfinished games (ahem sonic 06), etc. But, they don’t have character design issues. Nobody was asking sega to come up with new design for their characters, we just want them to make a good sonic game.
Basically what I’m trying to say isn’t that I don’t like the new designs but that I don’t understant why they felt that changing the way their characters look was necessary. I feel that Sonic’s design is one of the main aspects that made his popularity. To me and to some others, the new look is just alienating, not ugly. Call that nostalgia if you want to, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a valid observation.

Get over it. You got over the fact that Sonic was a werehog. Had to get over the fact that you played a main character in the Sonic universe that used guns. And i say had to because even after those dark days there was still some hope for Sonic (Colors, Generations). Granted, while the last Sonic game looked visually stunning but overall did not perform so well, at the very least this game seems to be constructed with the overall emphasis on “fun” and apparently not deterring from the core concept of Sonic with the conclusion of this article.

Nostalgia is only bad when you are blinded from the truth by it. Primary example:) Thinking a game is amazing when it sucks ass, JUST because it is a well known series and people have feelings for the franchise. I think the Sonic franchise represents this well, especially the game Lost World (the game is NOT good despite some people claiming it is).
Secondary example:) Hating any and all change to a game’s “makeup”. An example would be with Dante from Devil May Cry. People went ballistic over his redesign when he actually looked much better than before and it didn’t hinder the game play at all. (I’d say this new Sonic redesign also fits the bill). Another example would be Other M. The game wasn’t a bad game, but people went crazy over the way Samus acted(even though they only had it in their minds what she really acted like) and that one Ridley scene (which makes sense by the way if you played all the previous entrees to the franchise).
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Had there been no other Metroid entrees prior to Other M and people would have thought the game was great, but because they had their nostalgia glasses on, they found a couple faults that “didn’t match up” with their expectations and immediately cried “The game sucks!”
It is reasons like these that make nostalgia bad. What makes it good is a completely different thing. Good nostalgia is being able to go back and reminisce on past experiences and feel excited for new experiences with franchises you love.
That’s a stupid reason. If you’re going to make a new character then why the fuck do you use sonic then? It’s similar to when hollywood makes a movie on a historical event then changes many of the facts. Why not just write your own story if you’re gonna change the original?
Because they are playing off the popularity of the character or idea, but people criticize you if you leave everything the same. People WANT to see originality even in reboots and remakes.
If they just went and made their own game no one would know who they are and their game wouldn’t sell as much as they would hope. They would have to start from the bottom and work their way up and that takes years and years and most likely you will fail even if you are especially talented.
You can’t blame them for trying to ride Sonic’s popularity to success and the same goes for movies.
Then why not start a new gang instead of trying to reboot the series?
Leave Sonic alone, and come up with a new bunch of characters. Then the creativity is free. If you want to stick to a consolidated form, work in between the boundaries.

I never said people don’t care about Nostalgia, I just believe that the general consensus is that while being true to the original you should make it your own creation. I don’t really know anything about Robocop or Ninja Turtles so I can’t really elaborate on them, but generally if they are bad or mediocre films they probably won’t do well. If they are great films then they’ll probably sell well.
The movie industry is in a different ball game than other forms of media though. Sales are affected seasonally, by other popular films out at the time (I’m sure movies released at the same time as Frozen would have fared better if they released before or after Frozen), by advertising and hype, by original popularity( Robocop doesn’t seem like a big franchise to me). SO it could have been any combination of these. Just because it failed and some people on the internet hate it because it wasn’t true to the original doesn’t mean people hate originality in reboots.

They said the original redesigns, not the current ones.
Both the title of the article and the description implies to me that they were trying to find a redesign that the Sonic Team would actually like.
They did that by experimenting with a couple of different designs for each character.
Apparently, if the fact that they’re able to keep their current redesign is of any indication, they’ve succeeded.

I have faith in Big Red Button on this game, its not like Izuka himself hasnt screwed Sonic over and im not talkin about designs the guy was lost after Naka left after Sonic Adventure 2 up until Sonic Colors and then he failed again with LostWorld. This is the reason why Sega wanted to give Sonic to some other dev than Sonic team.

It really wasn’t. I would know, because I played it and I am the type of person who can see the good in almost anything, but for Lost World I just couldn’t… there was none… I really tried too.
That happens. But for me the game was really enjoyable, and I am the type of person who can see glitches everywhere.
Well the game didn’t really have glitches. The game had terrible controls(no not a learning curve, they were just bad. Sonic “felt” off when he jumped and my fingers could never get used to the way the buttons were set up, even if I changed the layout), many instances where you are left in the dark on what to do (I couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to beat Zeena… little did I know you could charge the snowball thanks to Youtube…wish they told me that before forcing me into the level) and there were way too many cheap K.Os, plus due to the awful controls it was almost impossible for me to beat a level with all my coins. I would get hit by almost every enemy I passed. I frequently lost all my lives and they never gave me enough afterwards so I’d die only a few minutes later and have to start the whole world over again -_-
When you aren’t having fun, it’s a bad game… and I was certainly not having fun. I found the game to be more of a chore. I actually never finished the game, because I hated it so much and dreaded getting frustrated by it’s abominable issues.

Okay first off, WGAF about Gamespot? Second, Sonic Team aint the only ones skeptical about Boom’s redesign. But knowing the dude in charge of Sonic before this game, I don’t think he can do better anyway since he’s been designing Sonic games for a decade and most of them sucked to no end except (according to fans) Colors and Generations were exceptionally good.

They tried it. None of this confirms that Big Red Button were set on pants until the Sonic team came in and said no. In reality they were probably testing the water with a wide array of Sonic (and co) designs and just wanted the Sonic Team’s input.
It’s standard procedure at any video game company/firm. I read all about the process in The Eyes of Bayonetta when they were designing the characters. They drew crazy wacky costumes, reserved costumes and more, all the while getting input from people involved in the game and from the “big guys up top.” They do this until they find something that resonates with everyone.
I would bet money this is the process they took and at one point someone happened to draw Sonic with pants and the Sonic Team immediately shot the idea down… no biggie, didn’t even make it past the drawing board.

So they basically admitted they don’t understand how to be faithful to the original designs…. When Sonic underwent his 2D to 3D makeover he was still quite the same overall. A bit taller, more detailed, a bit more grown-up looking, but I feel like there wasn’t much complaint about it. I do like how much he was touched by the conversation about whether they should wear pants or not, haha. I’m really not too fond of the new designs really, but I’ll give the game a go and check out the show. I haven’t been disappointed by any of the Sonic TV shows.
