Sonic The Hedgehog Film Will Apparently Be “Dark And Edgy”

Information regarding the Sonic The Hedgehog film have leaked online. The producers behind the film are apparently aiming to create something dark and edgy. The film is apparently geared towards an older audience and will feature a mix of live-action and animation. The only thing the film needs now is a writer for the project. Here’s the shortlist.

  • Brad Bird (“Incredibles, “”Wall-E,” “Brave,” “Toy Story 2,” “Up”)
  • Wernick & Reese (“Deadpool,” “Monsters Inc,” “Zombieland,” “GI Joe Retaliation”)
  • David Berenbaum (“The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Elf”)
  • Phil Johnston (“Wreck it Ralph” and “Nebraska”)

  1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Stupid movie makers trying to everywhere replicate the success of the Batman Trilogy…

Amazing Spider-Man failed horribly doing that…

      1. yes it did
not even watching the second part
i mean seriously, what kinda pussy Spidey reveals his identity to a cop

  2. Oh, good… a Sonic film. Considering video game films in the past, I have no reason to believe this is going to be good in the slightest bit. It’s going to be crap, just like the rest of ’em.

(And yet, it’ll still make its millions, and we’ll probably end up seeing a sequel or two… each worse than the previous film.)

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Although the Resident Evil movies are basically nothing like the games, I think they are still the best based on games movies ever made because every single one of them is entertaining…

But utterly fails to capture the true Resident Evil core (1-4)…

  3. While I like the Sonic video games (the games from before 1999) I’m uncertain if this is even a good idea. Depending on who they get to write this (if it’s even going to happen) it may go from dark and brooding to being immature, harbor some sort of fart jokes, and have some sort of questionable storyline at best that doesn’t relate to any of the franchise’s elements (sorta like how they butchered some of the past video game based movies).

Sonic was never really cut out for being dark and brooding, but as far as the franchise goes, it’s more of a futuristic yet fantasy type franchise, there are some dark elements melded in as far as the villains go but it’s more of a fun franchise centered around the main hero and his team and companions he meets along the way.

  4. I love how the writer of the leak put “dark and edgy” and “skewed torwards older audiences” together, as though they were interchangeable, because looking at past “dark and edgy” movies, they’re NOT the same thing. In fact, today, “skewed towards older audiences” and “dark and edgy” are often so far not the same thing almost as to be antonymical.

It gets even funnier when the writer proclaims with enthusiasm that the movie will “mix” live-action and animation helping Sonic to “meld with reality”. I’m not an anti-computer-effects elitist (though I do appreciate me some hand-drawn animation), but I can’t remember any time after the age of fifteen when I saw cgi alongside live-action and felt like the animated character was actually there. Even animation that I might have been in awe of in a video game looks very out-of-place in a live-action film. It’s very clearly fake-looking, to the point where I miss the animatronic puppets from thirty years ago (I’m looking at you, George Lucas). I’ll be relieved if I’ve misread the context of “mixed live-action and animation”, and the movie is actually animated something closer to The Polar Express, or The Adventures of TinTin.

All-in-all, I have high hopes, but not high expectations for this film, especially where “dark and edgy” has previously taken the very Sonic franchise itself, and “mixed live-action and animation” hints as to how much effort (lack thereof) will be put in.

    1. Again with the Sonic Shaming? Really, the games have been alright, once you cut away all the unnecessary fluff. Unleashed was new and was good, except for the Werehog. Colors is a great platformer and well worth every platformer fan’s time. Generations is a perfect anniversary love letter, and All Stars Racing Transformed is a Mario Kart Killer (Until 8 comes out). It’s mainly all of the spin offs and unnecessary fluff added to the games that down the experience of Sonic. Also, Nintendo fans think they’re too good for help. They’re prideful, just like Nintendo itself actually is.

      End rant.
      Wait. No. Yeah. End rant.

NO NO NO NO NOOOOOO! If you want to make a good video game film keep it ANIMATED! Seriously! That’s why Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, and Double Dragon failed because They’re not meant to be live action!

  6. I’m all on board for a Sonic Movie.
I am NOT, however, okay with it being turned into a freaking Dark Knight-wannabe! I don’t want a super serious Sonic, give me action-packed cartoony Sonic!
This had better all be false.

  7. They’re being idiotic. Dark and edgy animated films are box-office failures. It needs to be fun and family friendly if they want a hit.

    1. Gamer and Movie buff

Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, and Toy Story 3 were successful dark animated family friendly movies

      1. Hunchback is not as well known to people. Pinnochio is remembered as a light hearted story and toy story is only successful for nolstagia sake and being a good movie.

I’m thinking Eggman will be live action, which makes me wonder who’s gonna play him? These are my best picks of who I believe fits the role of Eggman:
    Robert De Niro
    Alec Baldwin
    John Malkovich
    Russell Crowe
    Tommy Lee Jones

  9. This is probably just a rumor since Brad Bird is currently writing a script for the Incredibles 2 and directing Tomorrow Land.

  10. This sounds REALLY good…with the exception of the live action bit. I’d love for this series to finally get a little darker again like it should be, but this movie would be so much better if it was all CGI. I’m looking forward to it, anyway.

  11. Come on guys. Did you read the website name? If it has the word Nintendo in it and they are talking about Sonic, then that means they’re most likely just making this shit up.

Let’s be real here, Nintendo has always been shoving a massive middle finger in Sonic’s face and this is no different.

    1. Gamer and Movie buff

Yeah because the fact that Nintendo and Sega buried the hatchet, the successful ports of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Colors, Sonic Rush, the Sonic Advance games, and Sonic in Smash Bros CLEARLY shows that Nintendo doesn’t give a shit about Sonic

  12. Sigh, i want to be optimistic about this rumor (if it happens to be true) but im just not sure about the decision to mix live action and animation for a movie such as Sonic. I dont understand why they didnt just opt for a full-cgi based movie like what their doing for ratchet and Clank and Sly cooper. Maybe it will end up being a good decision but right now i just cant see this turning out well. Ill try to be optimistic though

  13. Wow.Just…wow.Being a Sonic fanatic myself, I can kinda see why they wanna make a movie.Sega is losing some fans, they find a clever way to get him back largely into the hearts of people around the world. But still…….

  14. I like Shadow the Hedgehog as the Secondary Antagonist. Transformers Director Michael Bay should do the movie.

  16. A serious movie tone for a Sonic movie wouldn’t be a bad idea, seeing how serious the tone for the anime of Sonic X was, not to mention the Archie Sonic comics series has. A Sonic movie with a serious tone would not be a bad idea,

  17. I am going to be super optimistic about this, ( although I wish eggman would be cgi or something, I think it’ll be weird if he was a real dude) but the whole dark and edgy thing makes me wonder, how dark will it be? I know that they want to aim it on adults, but kids are gonna watch it, cuz they’ll be like “it’s a sonic movie!” So I hope it’s not that dark

    1. This is America’s take on the Sonic series, not the Japanese.

How the U.S. does the series is not the same as how the Japanese does the series, the Archie Sonic comics, Sonic Boom, Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground are the U.S. take on the series, and they are all completely different from the Japanese take on the series.

  18. Seeing how America’s take on Sonic has always been different from the Japanese take on him, it will probably be like the Transformers movies.

  19. People really shouldn’t complain about how serious the Sonic movie will be considering the fact that Sonic in american media has always been different from the japanese. How the U.S.A. handles the Sonic series is a lot different then how the Japanese handles the Sonic series.
