Nintendo has published its annual financial results for the 2013-14 fiscal year and has recorded another yearly loss due to the Wii U’s floundering performance. Ending on March 31, 2014, Nintendo’s overall net sales fell from last year’s 635.4 billion yen (£3.6bn) to this year’s 571.7 billion yen (£3.3bn). According to the report, Nintendo has culminated a total net loss of 23.2 billion yen (£134m) this year, compared to its 7 billion yen (£40m) profit from last year.
From a sales stance, the Wii U has performed abysmally in relation to the 3DS. In 12 months, the Wii U sold 2.7 million units, totalling its worldwide sales to 6.1 million units shifted since the console’s launch. Nintendo has forecast a sensible amount of 3.6 million units for the Wii U within the 2014-15 fiscal period, a clear step down from the 9 million predicted in the 2013 report.
The gaming corporation notes that its current home console still has a negative impact on profits, mainly due to the considerable markdown in the US and Europe. As such, although gross profit increased this year, due to administrative expenses and the nuts and bolts of the business, Nintendo posted an operating loss of 46.4 billion yen, up 10 billion yen from last year’s 36.4 billion yen loss.
Due to poor hardware sales, the Wii U’s software sales did not perform as expected. However, key first-party titles, namely Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, all sold upwards of one million units. Global sales of Wii U software peaked at 18.86 million units, but Nintendo expects sales to increase an extra 2 million by next year mainly from Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros for Wii U, giving a 20 million unit forecast.
“Nintendo will focus on efforts that seek to stimulate the platform. By providing software that takes advantage of the Wii U GamePad, utilizing its built-in functionality as an NFC reader/writer, and adding Nintendo DS Virtual Console titles to the Wii U software lineup, Nintendo will seek to enrich the value of the Wii U GamePad, the most important differentiator of Wii U, and as a result expand the sales of the Wii U platform.”
Hardware sales of the Nintendo 3DS have fallen slightly, with 12.24 million units total compared to 13.95 million units last fiscal year. However, unlike the previous year, the Nintendo 3DS has not managed to bridge the expenses gap left by the Wii U. Though Nintendo has forecast a further 12 million units for the handheld console, proving that they estimate a steady stream of sales once again.
In regards to 3DS software, global sales for Pokemon X and Y stormed to an incredible height with 12.26 million units sold, while successful simulation game Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold an impressive 3.8 million units with the US and Europe. Nintendo also notes that Luigi’s Mansion 2, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Bros. all sold more than two million units. Global software sales totalled a massive 67.89 million units over 49.61 million units last fiscal year.
It’s clear that Nintendo are fighting a tough battle when it comes to sales for the Wii U, but given their push for the home console with marketing campaigns for Mario Kart 8 and E3’s event for Super Smash Bros., coupled with a modest forecast for sales, Nintendo hasn’t quite thrown in the towel just yet. Nintendo Consoles usually last 5 years for 2 reasons
Reason 1 – Good Sales … riding out the profits
Reason 2 – No possibility of updating hardware
They couldn’t replace the Gamecube quickly, it was top-quality hardware … same with N64. The Wii wasn’t top-quality hardware, but it had good sales. The Virtual Boy didn’t have good sales and it’s the best they could do … so, the scapped it! … the WiiU is the first system with poor sales in which it’s not using top-quality hardware … DO NOT EXPECT A 5 YEAR CYCLE … this situation is unlike any situation Nintendo has been in before … expect a NEW SYSTEM … nintendo won’t even say they’re replacing the WiiU. Nintendo will do a DS trick … the DS replaced the GB and Nintendo said it wasn’t replacing the GB … in time, yes it did. The WiiU will be replaced whether they say so or not.

Biggest wii u proplem next to not having 3rd party support is only one gamepad per system… if they could add one more gamepsd to the unit, itd might make a big difference in sales but I guess that ship has sailed.

Anyway, I believe this is down to the shuffling in the Nintendo HQ, only a fraction of the profits are due to the 3DS and Wii U. Even then that isn’t a very big lose seeing how the 3DS is still selling well and the Wii U is starting to pick up.
I’m surprised not many people talk about how Microsoft is still losing money because the Xbox 360 and Xbox Original actually costed them a shit ton of money because they couldn’t keep up with the loses in profitsm or how Sony has lost over $1 Billion or so this past week.
Nintendo is in decent shape and I wouldn’t really worry about them because once the new Video Game Crash comes around, Nintendo’s innovative games and ideas will once again save gaming.

well it’s a good news, believe it or not. cause Wii U did not have much support from Nintendo either, 2013 was really really ……. (fill the blank) for the wii U in term of support but again the hardware has been doing great it you take into account additional factors such as the press/3rd part are not keen on the hardware which bring a lot of negative press. The good thing is software sell very well and have the potential to build a solid library which will transform the Wii U as a seller. If people break their Wii (i.e. little johnny put a chocolate biscuit in the optical driver) they will buy the Wii U. Saying say Nintendo needs to have a stream of constant software release. 1 very good game a month can turn thing around. Nintendo really needs to keep the momentum after Mario kart 8 until Christmas if they want the wii U to be successful. Also bring title on eshop is good but they really need to have a reality check on their online offering and customer loyalty reward.
Nintendo 3 DS has a magnificent support both from Nintendo and 3rd party also at the end f the day you can sell 500 millions unit worldwide which is logic the sales decrease steadily.
Couple with other economic factors (tax raised in Japan) and the early start of the economy recovery in Europe and US. The fact they have to buy back some share, they invested in companies, developing new thing and new business (QOL). The results are logics and it’s a very good news. They really have to get to work as from the E3 until Christmas. If Mario kart and smash bro managed to shit an additional 3 millions units for 2014-2015 then the Wii U will be in OK position.

Nintendo could have made the Wii U hardware as powerful as the PS4 and Xbox1. Nintendo is sitting on at least 11 billion cash reserves. The Wii U was perceived as week even compared to PS3, that is what killed it these last two years, that and not enough games. I love my Wii U. Nintendo should put a pro controller and a Wiimote plus and nunchuck in every box with the Gamepad and make games that use two Gamepads. I love the Wii Sports Club Golf and Tennis and Bowling, Golf uses the Gamepad. What ever happened to the shooting game that used the Wiimote plus Nunchuck with the Gamepad as a scope, that looked awesome.
These losses are from the price drops for the Wii U. The company itself is still making money hand over fist.
If they just advertized the thing as its own standalone console, it would probably do better.

Nintendo’s first big mistake with the Wii U was lack of advertising. It was in stores for god knows how long before I seen the first Wii U tv commercial. Even now, you never see any Wii U commercials unless you’re watching certain channels. My local Wal-Mart just recently got a Wii U kiosk. It’s been there for about 2 months now. But I have never seen it working. The screen is always black. No power. Why? Who knows.
Nintendo failed to advertise at the key moment when they should have. Before the PS4 And Xbone released. I just hope that us Nintendo fans who bought a Wii U is enough to keep Nintendo afloat. I also hope that Nintendo has some awesome announcements for E3. And not something like NintendoLand again. (- _ -)
They need to announce some hardcore titles. Like Metroid, Star Fox, Animal Crossing (for Wii U) etc. Or Super Mario Galaxy 3 (or Sunshine 2). And (even though it’s not exactly a system seller), I wonder when we’ll hear about a Mario Party 10? I hope it’s a dramatic improvement. I’ve never played Mario Party 9, but my brother and niece talks like it sucked.
There’s SO many things Nintendo could do to revitalize their company and franchises. I just hope we get to see something besides Smash Bros., Mario Kart 8 and Zelda at E3. Yes, I do want to see the new Zelda. But much MORE!
agreed with what you are saying. FYI Mario Party 9 sucked, trust me I play Mario part 1,4,5,6,7,8 and 9. My favourite one is mario party 7 followed by 5. I play mario party 5, 2 weeks ago (yeah I still use my wii). I hope they bring the fun back and more content cause the fun was not there in MP9 and the content was no there in MP8 and 9. To be honest an easy thing to do will be to have all the boards from 1 to 9, and make sure we move like we are used to in MP1 to 8
Yeah, I always thought it would be cool to have a Mario Party game that featured every board and mini-game from the entire series. As long as they have an option to turn off each specific mini-game that you don’t like. Instead of just mini-game “sets”. Seriously, there’s some mini-games that I hated with a passion. And the game seemed to choose those mini-games over & over. Like that super boring one where you have to steer the submarine and shoot your opponents. Ugh! I think that was Mario Party 2 or 3. Or 1?

This is what happens when you can’t market your console and when you can’t get 3rd party support. If you marketed the Wii U like it should be marketed and get 3rd party support, you’d probably do much better. Look, I like Nintendo and I’m not trying to troll here, but I don’t think Mario Kart and Smash bros. are going to save this console this time. They may help within the first few weeks, but that will be it. Look at Super Mario 3D World. Everyone thought that was going to skyrocket sales for the wii u. It was even #1 on Amazon for a week. But it only sold over a million copies. I think the same is going to happen with Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Again, I’m not trying to troll or make people angry.

first problem: the name. 2nd problem: no games….many 3rd party devs stepped back or hold their games to release it on all systems instead of exclusives (look at you ubisoft). 3rd problem: still no metroid or star fox. dear mr nintendo, why not listening to the fans…to the ppl who are the customer???! i dont get it. dont be a proud japanese….proud is a false feeling, letting you things do that no normal one would do.
If the name is a problem, I feel sorry for humanity since Super Nintendo Entertainment System was just one word from Nintendo Entertainment System. As for no games, it has plenty of games. This “no games” problem is false. It’s been false the day it was used to explain the Wii U’s bad sales. The real problem is the system just doesn’t have the games that the MAJORITY wants, not that it has no games period. And the big name 3rd parties are not the “many” as many people like to believe. Not anymore, anyway. The 3rd party indie developers outnumber the big name 3rd parties.
If the name was a problem then the Xbox One wouldn’t have sold 3 million… and slowed down like shit, yeah I think your right the name is the main cause.
But saying there is “no games” is pretty arrogant, because the Wii U actually has more games than the PS4 and Xbox One
Xbox One – 1 Game and 1 meh indie game
PS4 – 1 Game and a handful of great indie games
Wii U – 8 Games and a shit ton of great indie games

The main reason why Wii U flopped was because 1. Lack of public advertisements 2. Dumbass and lazy 3rd parties starting the BS trend of Wii U being weak when clearly there’s a hand ful of developers who actually took time working with Wii U and proved the system had more potential than everyone thinks (NFS: Hot Pursuit and Project Cars for example) 3. Nintendo, for some odd reasons, making strange ass decisions that makes people believe they’re holding back. 4. 2013 shortage of launch window titles.
Its nothing wrong about the hardware other than it being differently built from PS4/One that made 3rd parties whine like the lazy pussies they are and exaggerate or lie about Wii U’s true hardware architecture. The truth cannot get anymore simple than that.

Nintendo may have hit rock bottom with the Wii U, but don’t expect it to actually get much better at any point in this generation.
I just want the Wii U to die and for Nintendo to make their games for a proper console. I don’t want to be playing awesome games like Zelda on such a half-assed system when we have the XBox One and PS4. The 3DS is fine though, Nintendo can keep doing their own unique thing with that, it just doesn’t work with the same way with consoles.
