Nintendo has announced its plans to unveil projects that can only be made possible with the Wii U GamePad at E3 next month. During its financial results briefing today, the company reconfirmed that the touch-screen controller’s quick start menu function will be available to Wii U owners either before or during summer.
“At the Corporate Management Policy Briefing this January, I explained that the company would prioritize making and proposing Wii U software titles that can only be made possible with the Wii U GamePad,” said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. “We are planning to disclose our progress on this at E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) in Los Angeles in June.
“I also mentioned at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing this January the quick start menu. The integration of this feature is almost complete, and this is how it will actually work on the Wii U system. We will deliver this update to Wii U owners when we update the Wii U hardware either before or during summer.”
I do believe this is good news. Hopefully, seeing these projects in action motivates more people to purchase a Wii U.
On a side note, the NFP project looks very intriguing. It seems to have potential.
too little, too late
this is something new? … an “ideas” innovation they couldn’t come up with 2 years ago when first talking to developers?
what if they convince developers? … it would take 1-3 years for games to be produced … too late!!!
Nintendo just showed it’s first NFC figure and it’s mario. These figures are supposed to work across various titles. Sickr if your reading this post an article.
it’s still not clear to me … i mean, seriously, how is this different from Swapforce? … that’s on every system.
also, they said it will be compatible with software by Year-End … April is their Year-End … April 2015 … they’re saying software will support it within 12 months.
you can already get Swapforce for WiiU now … how is this better? … Nintendo shouldn’t get our credit … put-up or shut-up we should start chanting.
Well, if you read carefully, you should be able to notice the difference between Nintendo’s NFP and the Skylanders figurines. Data can be read from and written to the NFP figures, and they will be compatible with multiple games and software. Nintendo also announced that they are developing an NFC reader/writer for the 3DS due for next year, so both Wii U and 3DS will be able to interact with these NFP figures for various games, not just something for exclusive use in one series of games, like in Skylanders/Disney Infinity.
Agreed. It’s absolutely ridiculous that Nintendo is JUST NOW using the Gamepad and NFC. It really feels like they’ve been strategically trying to make sure the WiiU was a commercial failure.
Now. After seeing how much money they lost by not teaming up with Skylanders, they are trying to jump on the money train…well, too fucking late Nintendo. Good luck with that.
Yep. But a price cut OR a cheaper model would also help a lot
What’s this? Someone commenting positively and not being a jerk at all? Viva la Révolucion!!
Fucking finally!
BS … remember dual gamepads that were promised 2 years ago? … seriously … 2 years ago during e3 2012 they said we’d get dual-gamepad games.
could you imagine … IMAGINE … being an indie game developer that made a game to support 2 gamepads? … what a waste of time that would have been.
They never said 2 Gamepads would be available at launch, they said in the future, Watch the E3 again…
are you serious? … we’re 1.5 years into the life of the WiiU … that’s a big chunk, unless you seriously believe this is a 6 year console and the extra gamepads are coming out tomorrow.
Dude, 1.5 years is not that much to a console. Your looking at least another 2.o years left to look at, then again iwata at the time could have been talking about “Nintendo Fusion” as if he knew the wii u might fail. You need to relax, calm yourself and clear your head man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5DVrgorJr0
I also heard them saying that it is possible to use two gamepads…but I never heard them promising us them off the bat nor promise them on the wii u for a double function reality.
They stated yesterday that they wont replace wii.u.for atleast 2 to 3 years look up the investors meeting
Many things come out 3-4 years after launch so it’s not unbelievable…
That I know…but its hard to explain to new comers of gaming and to those who don’t understand well.
It just seems like they get stupider and lack more perspective insight with each new generation.
I’ll keep an eye on this, but I doubt it will amount to much.
exactly!!
i own a WiiU … i find very little use of the WiiU Gamepad
i sometimes use it standalone for VC games … but don’t get me started with VC games … where are the rest? … WiiU has been out for 2 years and they’re not even utilizing it for their complete VC library.
i blow my mind every time i think about the opportunities Nintendo purposely pass-up … now they’re talking about unknown opportunities? … boy i’m angry right now.
I agree. I’m trying to figure out how it can be really useful other than item select and map. I guess that’s where their innovation is meant to come in
I’m perfectly fine with the Gamepad being used as item select, menu select, maps, & HUD stuff (like health bars, ammo left over, etc.) I love the idea of being able to enjoy the game with all that stuff removed from the television. Not to mention it can add a challenge to the games with that feature if there isn’t anything letting you know that you’re health is low like annoying beeping. (Looking right at you, Zelda!)
Because they keep trying to make their games accessible to every controller they have out… rather than making the game SPECIFICALLY only for the GamePad.
Nintendo Land? Uses the GamePad AND Wii Remote. Pikmin 3? It uses the GamePad, but the best way to play it is with the Wii Remote Plus + Nunchuk. Super Mario 3D World? Uses the GamePad just a tad… but not all that much. They had to downplay this one because of the stupid multiplayer… if the game was DESIGNED to be single player like Super Mario Galaxy WHILE making use of the GamePad alone (no Pro Controller support), the game would be far more compelling, and the system would be easier to understand with a game that actually uses it right. (Not to mention, the game would probably look better because they’d only need ONE character moving at once, not four different ones and then some when you get the Double Cherries)
Yes, they SHOULD have simply made a single-player, GamePad-only game from the beginning…because now’s… kind of late.
It is never too late. PS and XB are dead in term of innovation.
They need a game with a level editor or maker of some sort. It would be perfect for the gamepad.
If Smash Bros gets a stage editor I could imagine that is what it’s used for.
Hey yeah!
That’s all good and dandy, but that can be done on anything and not ONLY the gamepad. Nintendo definitely has some cool ideas brewing. They always do. I’m still waiting for dual views of the same gameplay to be shown.
“cough” “cough” Next Zelda Game “cough” “cough”
Smash Bros. aside, I guess :P
Hmmmmm smells like new IPs!

Finally, two years later, but Finally.
Something that should have been on their mind a LONG FUCKING TIME AGO…
Yet you bitched about How Nintendo is using the NFC chip inside of the gamepad for figures like Skylanders….. trollU is hypocrite
Don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about. I’ll be honest I’m a mix of a Nintendo fan and troll. Not the average stupid ones on here.
In other words, you’re just a bad troll…
Yup. Lol. Failed miserably and in a way exposed myself. Lol. I’ll change my name, but I really don’t at the moment.
Make some games that lets you use the freaking Gamepad as a damn camera! I’d love to see a new Pokemon Snap. And Nintendo owns a small percentage of Fatal Frame so that game damn sure better use the Gamepad as the camera. As for Metroid, the gamepad could be used for the visor capabilities like scanning enemies for information, scanning the lore found throughout the game, & the x-ray visor. If it’s set after Metroid Fusion, a visor for detecting creatures similar to X-parasites that Samus can absorb to replenish her health and/or ammo could be utilized. Of course, the visor could be less of a visor & more of a sixth sense kind of thing.
Pokémon Snap Wii U is a great idea, and I’m shocked it doesn’t already exist
On paper this sounds good. I mean for once Nintendo is going to justify the reason for the GamePad and its added cost, as well as show why you invested in a console that may not bring as much third party content and power as the XboxOne and PS4. The Gamepad should be the X factor which differentiates Nintendo from competitors, not a gimmick that does nothing for software but add another screen for multiplayer. All that said, Nintendo will probably just bring some gimmicky minigames/optional applications. I hope my low expectations are exceeded
I’m also expecting nothing more than a party game. Not that there is anything wrong with that because those games are the most fun and when you add the craziness of the gamepad it could be extremely epic fun.
But it should also have more serious games or else it would start to feel like the balance board that’s only used in fitness games.
About time they did.
whatever game nintendo is going to show off will be the future of video games I for one want Metroid Prime Hunters 2 with a gamepad zapper attachment
