Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed that the legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto is helping internal developers with upcoming Wii U titles that will fully utilize the Wii U GamePad. Iwata says that the projects, some of which are almost complete, will be showcased next month at E3. Although it won’t unveil a new version of the Wii U at the forthcoming expo, Nintendo is planning to reveal software that can only work with the console’s touch-screen controller.

“Today I only spoke about Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers For Wii U in terms of Wii U software, however, at the E3 event to be held in June in Los Angeles we will discuss other software as well,” said Iwata. “Also, at that time, we will introduce multiple games that are designed to introduce players to the value of the Wii U Game Pad by demonstrating playstyles only possible because of it. These titles have been developed by internal teams under the guidance of Mr. Miyamoto (Board Member, General Manager of the Development Division). The software titles that we will show at E3, which make use of the Game Pad, will range from near complete titles to titles that are early in development, but will demonstrate the titles’ core appeals. We are preparing multiple software like this for the show.”

      2. Maybe the bad fiscal year was just to lull the Nintendo haters into a false sense of security. Or maybe it’s just a bad year. If I’m not mistaken, didn’t the Xbox 360 have trouble when it came out nearly a whole year before the PS3 & Wii? I know they had the Red Ring of Death (hahaha) but that’s the only bad news I ever heard. I wasn’t using the internet as heavily then as I am now, so I don’t really know.

  2. This should have been done at last year’s E3. Better late than never I guess but just shows you how ill prepared Nintendo was for this generation and that they should have come out in 2013 rather than 2014. At least then they would have had easily the most launch games and meanwhile could have caught up internally on to program for HD. Let’s hope these announcements help turn things around.

    1. Most of the stuff for Wii U they announced in E3 were still being developed, though. Unlike certain other companies, Nintendo doesn’t like to rush out their big games without making sure they are top quality. No matter. If the Wii U ends up being another Gamecube, it will be perfectly fine with me since the GCN era was one of my two favorite Nintendo eras. The other being the SNES era.

      3. you know the word gimmick is neither bad nor good. People saw the shoulder buttons on snes as a gimmick, Rumble packs,and people saw the analog stick as a gimmick. They would become a big part of controllers. Game pad has potential, if it were shown more, games like Zelda, pikmin, wonderful 101, Rayman and nintendo land have shown what it can do, but it needs to show more. At times I prefer motion control over analog(games like zelda, pikmin some shooters, metroid) they prove to be more responsive. The gamepad is a gimmick, so is the kinect, the ps camera,The rift, and ps4 controller. Its part of gaming way of adding things to make a bigger experience

The gamepad has be useful on several times adding some new, but not a whole lot. And Dude, I own more then one console, I want to experience everything gaming has, and I’ll buy xbone, and ps4 sometime down the line.Ps4 was mostly sold on hype, most people I know only own a few games Killzone, infamous, and tomb raider. No one ever bothered to really say how it should be used.

      2. Earthbound was meant to be a 3 game series, if I recall correctly. But Metroid was also meant to be a trilogy but now it’s over 5 games, so I guess there is some slim chance of an Earthbound 4… if someone at Nintendo has any new ideas for it, that is.

The Prime games were always meant to be a Trilogy, but that was only because Retro was working on them and they designed the games and the story. Anyone at Nintendo could pick up the franchise and start a new trilogy, make a new game or add on another game to Prime. Metroid isn’t done, buy Earthbound is done, because the franchise was planned out while Metroid is not.

Gunpei Yokoi, from what I remember, only intended for Metroid to be a trilogy just like how Alien was a trilogy before Resurrection was made. After all, Metroid takes A LOT of it’s stuff from that franchise.

No. Does your Kinect have physical buttons? No. Does the Kinect have a touch screen? No. Does the Kinect act as a secondary TV where it can work with another controller like the Wii Remote+Nunchuk during off TV play? No. Does the Kinect have a built in battery where you don’t have to keep the device plugged 24/7 and can take it anywhere within range to wirelessly stream/play games? No. Does Kinect have NFC built in? No. Does Kinect have any wireless function like Bluetooth, Ad-Hoc or Wi-Fi? No. Can Kinect act as a TV remote controller DIRECTLY? No but through voice commands which is both stupid and impractical when you already have a TV remote. Lastly, can the Kinect support 2 player splitscreen-less multiplayer? NO!

        Kinect is just a failed forced camera that was originally intended to pathetically steal some of Nintendo Wii’s motion hype and flopped just like PSMove did. Its just a fucking camera that does what other cameras including PSEye has been doing for years prior to its wasted existence.

        Wii U gamepad makes it easier to navigate through menu using the touch screen, the sensor bar on the gamepad itself can be used for Wii and Wii U games on the Gamepad itself, the Camera can be implemented in games like the Vita did with it’s camera, the NFC sensor eliminates the need for a bulky accesory (Which is probably why you are mad because you can’t put anything in your purse) and finally, the Wii U gamepad itself can be used as a functioning TV remote which the Kinect can’t do.

        Kinect can… detect your movement and sense your voice… kind of like Siri and many other apps that have been out on Tablets, Smartphones and even Smart TVs for years now… Face it kiddo, Kinect is a gimmick.

  17. If Nintendo wants to change their brand recognition they can announce some key games. I think it’s funny every site says they won’t show his new IP but I keep trying to figure out why people think they won’t.

    I am totally satisfied with my purchase since I went from a hardcore gamer ( Plays games night and day), to more casual maybe 5 – 10 total hours a week at the most.

    Games game pad featured.

    Nintendo world spiritual successor to Nintendo land with better character models.

    Advance Wars supports new NFP figurines. The Figurines look like old school army men figures.

    Pokemon game that bridges MMO Elements, Pokemon snap, Colliseum elements. Game can be a hybrid. Take Pokemon rumble elements and blow them into HD. Also NFP figures can be used in a Pokemon game for the 3DS and stats can be transferred to the Wii U game.

    FPS arcade game. You have the game pad attached to a Gun peripheral something developed by Sega.

    New IP from Miyamoto.

    Old School returning franchises:

    Metroid, Starfox, F Zero, Super Mario Galaxy 3, Eternal darkness, Fatal Frame, Punch Out., Yoshi Yarn, X and maybe some other gems.

    New Surprises:

    Devils Third, Golden Sun HD,, Perhaps other games that were left for dead.

    This would def make Nintendo the company that has set the bar.

    For those that think the Game pad is a gimmick the Dualshock controller is as gimmicky as it comes.

      1. Yes, they have been very quiet with these ones and it only seems like these games will soon be available. However, thinking of Star Fox, you don’t really NEED the gamepad to play it, same with Metroid. I guess we just need to wait until they reveal if they are all new IP’s or returning ones.

      2. I disagree with the Metroid part. Imagine a 3rd person 3D Metroid using the Gamepad for 1st person perspective when using the different visors. In 3rd person, you’re seeing what Samus is seeing as if she doesn’t have a special visor like the X-ray Visor activated. Or if it’s a post Fusion game, an X-Parasite visor as Samus discovers there are X on other planets that are either not as hostile as they were on SR388 or hostile X that have completely eradicated all life on the planet, becoming the only species on it. So many possibilities for Metroid using the Gamepad.

      4. You’d be right… if the 3rd person perspective was the problem. But it wasn’t. It was the story & the portrayal of Samus that ruined Other M for people. If all 3 Metroid Prime games were in 3rd person, they still would have sold the same amount.

  24. The Gamepad definitely should’ve been a side option. I hate being forced to use it. You can’t even view the eshop without it. The Pro Controller should’ve been the main controller. I don’t hate the Gamepad, it just infuriates me when I have to use it in a place it obviously isn’t needed. I mean, let’s be honest. A majority of us are just going to play Mario Kart 8 with the Gamepad the standard way like a normal controller. It would’ve been awesome if they made the Gamepad have super strong rumble on games like the Gamecube did…

    1. I prefer the Gamepad for the eShop. It’s so much quicker to use the touch screen to scroll through the eShop. But I will say I hate how Netflix forces us to use the Gamepad. I can’t go to sleep watching shows on Netflix using the Gamepad since I don’t sleep alone.

  27. Like others had mentioned, it made no sense why they were just going through the motions last year and not implementing these ideas for the main attraction of the Wii U, the gamepad. Why make hardware if you’re not going to make full use of its capabilities? It just adds to unncessary costs. Glad they are waking up somewhat, and realizing what they must do to improve the Wii U’s install base: justify why your product offers something fun and different from the competition.

That would be funny if Gabe Newell was on the Nintendo Digital Stream and said “Wii U is a perfect fit for our latest installment of the Half Life Series, Half Life 3” And confirms the Source Engine 2 is running at 1080p at 30 fps on the Wii U with everything maxed out and that it’s a yearly timed exclusive for Steam OS and Wii U XD

    4. I can say the same thing for Xbox One. Why wasn’t Don Mattrick fired two years ago before Xbox One was revealed? Why wasn’t the DRM removed yet since pieces of it still remains? Why promote TV, DRM, Forced Kinect-NSA and all that crap except games last year and maybe this year’s E3? Why not get rid of the Kinect entirely when it failed last gen and NOBODY, not even fans and game developers want nor care about it and drop the price to match PS4 & actually compete with it?

      At least Nintendo its getting their acts together this year while Microsoft still willingly rips money and privacy out of 4 million dumbasses who forgot about DRM and foolishly paid for an overpriced gimped PC with an failed illegal spy camera that can’t even run 1080p and explodes when you least expected.

  34. Nintendo should have done this at last years E3!!!!
    Miyamoto bragged 14 months ago that he was working on a brand new ip….14 months later and still NOTHING!If this game does not get shown at E3 then the new game is a load of tosh by Nintendo used just to try and create hype!
    At E3 Nintendo need to show Zelda, Metroid,F-Zero type game,X,Miyamoto new IP,tease of new Mario in development,and a lot of 3rd party games arriving soon.
    Also the new cheap console for China and other markets needs to be awesome and not another lame gimmick.
    It is mind boggling how Nintendo have waited 19 months to get Miyamoto to work with developers on games that are specific for the Gamepad.
