NFC Will Be Used In Super Smash Bros Wii U

French news publication Le Figaro is reporting that Super Smash Bros on the Wii U will utilise Near Field Communication. The information was revealed by Stephan Bole, director general at Nintendo FranceDetails regarding how the game uses the technology have yet to be announced, but it sounds as though there may be Smash Bros NFC toys on the horizon.

“E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology [used in Skylanders and Disney Infinity, allowing the use of real objects – here, figurines – in video games] in Nintendo consoles . The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.”

        1. The figurines could hold custom movesets and user names, (as well as the leveling up that was confirmed in an iwata asks) that u could take to your mates house to use

      1. Think about it. If the figurines are properly priced, imagine the possibilities of expanding the roster. We could get Pac-Man, Snake or even Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask to join in the fight.

IDK about you but if Nintendo can pull this off just right, it can evolutionize the game to near limitless heights. :)

        1. I’d honestly rather buy them as online DLC than have to go down to the store to try and find a figurine or other physical object.

          1. No he’s right. Just like Skylander toys, they can throw out an update to include new character toys. Angry Birds Star Wars and Go games both use similar concepts except with scanner codes. My sons bought a ton. It is a good marketing strategy just because people like collectables. Plus not only are you playing with the character in game but you can trade and have outside of the game.

            1. Player192 has got the idea. It would require just a software update and that’s it.

I cannot imagine that being too hard, unless technical difficulties prevent them from doing so.

    1. Most newer mid to high grade android phones and tablets have NFC. It allows all kinds of stuff. You’d possibly be able to read and duplicate the NFC code to another NFC Chip (phones and tablets can read and write chips btw).

  1. Interesting, I wonder how that’ll play out. I’m not familiar with Skylanders, but that sounds promising. I’m guessing for unlockable content and maybe payable DLC? Imagine dishing out 20 for an extra 20 character (skins) and 10 extra stage (colors) Imagine…buying 1080P graphics as an upgrade for 20!!!! I’m hyped for #SmashBrosOnMyWiiU

I think it’s the first thing you mentioned. I seriously doubt Nintendo is going full on Skylanders.

            1. pink0crystal0midbus

They both are, but I don’t think Nintendo will do the same. They will compete against the two overpriced games by being cheaper.

  2. I knew it..
It will be great, I’d love to have the link, kirby, samus and others figurines *_____* I hope nfcs don’t be expensives as others miniatures here in my country

    1. Because that’s exactly what they said. They will be $20 per character.
      Yes.
      Superb.
      Your comprehension skills are outstanding.

    2. pink0crystal0midbus

$20 per character my ass. They’ll be similar in price to Skylanders and Disney Infinity characters, maybe even cheaper, you know, cause Nintendo likes to have cheap products.

      1. Nintendo will price the figurines high, Nintendo Fans will be like, “that’s OK! Nintendo does everything perfectly” and we’ll have to buy the same figuring three times to “Samus Smash Bro!” “Samus kart driver edition!” “Samus New Metroid edition!” “Baby Samus!”
        All only $7.99 each!

        1. What I understood is that the figurines will feature extra content, they will not be necessary to play the game entirely..buy them with you want it.

          1. Right. So if you want to play as Baby Samus in Smash, (you wouldn’t have to) then you could buy the figurine…as many of you noted, it’s not like we’d have to buy them (hopefully)

          1. That would be reasonable… But Nintendo rarely prices things reasonably… Don’t forget about the Mario Picture app for the 3DS with $10 AR cards…

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

        A gimmick nonetheless.
And there’s a difference. Skylanders was based around figurines. Super Smash Bros. was not.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

Gimmicks tend to make money and when your consumers don’t mind buying into it, then why not?

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I’m all for it if it doesn’t hamper my own experience. If they put exclusive Smash content on several $20 figures, I’m going to be pissed off.

If it’s something like, “Buy this Lucas figure and use it to download your DLC Lucas character,” then fine. But then that begs the question, “Why couldn’t they put him in the game in the first place?”

  3. It’s probably not gonna be characters because they ccan just add that in the game as DLC. It might be trophies orr something.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

No, it would be characters, because trophies don’t do anything in the game. The character statues can transfer character data from Smash Bros 3DS to Smash Bros Wii U.

I’m not saying you will need the statues to play the game, I’m sure all the characters will be unlocked without the statues, but if you want to connect the 3DS version to the Wii U version you will need the statues.

  4. pink0crystal0midbus

Great! Now, all Nintendo needs to do is release the toys at my local toy store and I will go buy them all!!! :D Can’t wait! I haven’t collected things since like 8 years ago when I collected Yu Gi Oh cards.

  5. Someone from ign mentioned a while ago when they first announced the Near field toys the custom move sets for smash…you could save your custom sets in the toys then take those custom sets with you, it’s wa pure speculation but seems possible now.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

Especially, because Sakurai said you would be able to transfer one character from the 3DS game to the Wii U and back again. Also, remember he was saying that you could level up your characters in the 3DS version?

He was clearly talking about the NFC characters, because these are the exact same functions that Nintendo has been talking about for NFC in general!

  7. well in this new, they say the 3 DS is the handle which sell the most 2.4 M unit.

2 DS was a bit of nightmare at first but they have done they marketing and start selling OK. 50% of the 20 best-sellers games in France are 3DS games.

Pokemon X and Y is system seller (don’t specify how much but it has a large contribution), so far it reach 660K and animal crossing 440K unit. There are game like monster hunter 3 which sell quiet well as well 100K, fire emblem sold 70K and Bravely Default sold 60K so far.

Shin Megami Tensei IV is being translated and they expect strong sell (France like RPGs). Also each game release in France hit number 1 spot like mario party (70K), Yoshi Island (60K).

Wii is still the most popular console in France (6M) and still selling 130K wii and 15K wii mini hence why Nintendo France has some difficulty to sell the Wii U but with mario kart which will for sure sell 10K just on pre-order. Also in the same good news 2013 saw an increase of 50% of Wii U. They are really confident they will sell more with Mario kart. See no all is gloom for Nintendo.

  8. From a marketing standpoint, this is pretty smart, and the right thing to do. It will bring in extra cash. However, the figures should only be for DLC characters, I think. I’d hate to have to pay just to play as my mains (Captain Falcon, Toon Link, Sonic, Luigi) in Smash. However, I doubt Nintendo would do that. They seem to be embracing DLC as of late, (with Pikmin 3, Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario Golf, etc) so fingers crossed it is DLC.

  9. so just wii u version? cool! though I don’t care for nfc and I will be getting the 3ds version only

    1. I’d wait for E3 Smash announcements before ruling out the U version. 3DS has an exclusive mode, we don’t know what they’re planning for the console Smash.?.

  10. It would REALLY make sense to have extra characters sold as the figurines in stores, especially since the whole Smash Bros. universe is supposed to be you, or some mysterious hand controlling figurines or toys; be it imagination or magic. They even had the stands on the bottom in Brawl and Melee too I believe. Think about it, placing the toy on the GamePad, watching the little trophy figure fall on a table in-game and then come to life like Mario in the opening to Brawl. And I guess the Wii U advantage would be getting to use the toys early since NFP is coming to Wii U later this year and the 3DS reader/writer early next year, and if you buy the stand for 3DS you could scan in your characters to that one too. You probably can even transfer stats/movesets or something between the two versions.

  11. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

If it has anything to do with characters that should be in the game from the start then I’m going to lash out on High Command…

I hope this is not the reason Captain Falcon has yet to be announced…

I hope they save him for E3 to reveal a F-Zero game at the same time…

  12. If they put this in smash bros it will be hated by many. If they plan to go on with NFC then they shod make that for a new game. Not an existing awesome game serie.

I think if they launch this as figurines. Then I guess more and more games from Nintendo will use it. Say if you buy mario for smash you’d be able to use him in a game like Mario kart. Or mario party. All Nintendo games will be figurine based. It is quite fun now. But I don’t think it will last.

  13. I imagine this could be for unique, exclusive trophy models, like the three special trophies in SSB: Melee.

  14. Nintendo is embracing DLC, but for what I know everything they had created for DLC is extra content, not main parts of the game (like in Assassin’s Creed). Sakurai also said that he wants “to make the Wii U and 3DS versions the best and the fullest experience possible” but “That said, once finished, it’s the type of thing we could take into consideration, but for now, you could consider DLC as not being in the cards.” Maybe the NFP will feature the data download that many are talking about, that would be great, that you can costumize your character in one version of the game, and instead of making all over again on the other version you just transfer this data via the figurine. Also, if DLC is coming, and they create characters requested by people, like Mewtwo for example, I think that maybe Nintendo would put Mewtwo on eShop and in figurine, that way if you want to collect the figurines you can buy Mewtwo figurine and also bring it to the game, and if you just want the DLC then you can buy it directly from the eShop.

But I really think that the Brawl’s roster is going to return, except maybe Squirtle, Ivysaur, Ike and Snake. If this happens and people start complaining then Nintendo can make them DLC and NFP and it will be up to us to decide if we want them or not.

I think is a risky movement, but one that can be great for collectors and for Nintendo.

  15. poopyfacepotatonose

I have a feeling it won’t be related to the character roster, but maybe just the collectible in-game trophies.

  16. Pingback: 噂:『スマブラ for WiiU』はNFCフィギュアに対応。E3 2014で発表 | t011.org

  17. im pretty sure the nfc content wont be defining to the game experience.this is because just think 5/6 years in time, the newntendo system will be out and i find it hard to believe that they’ll still sell old game figures.and this is a game thats supposed to keep selling in time, just look at ssbb

  18. I’m not too worried about what this is going to be. Could be as harmless as AR cards or something. Seeing as how they recognized the hardcore nature of smash with the “glory” mode online I doubt they would do something to “ruin” the franchise.

  19. Mmmh. What if…
imagine there is a nfc chip INSIDE the 3DS card of smash bros.
ans this could unlock certain stages for example…

  20. MAN! Does this mean that even more unlockable characters might be able to be added to the game just from NFC figures? If so, I wonder if entire stages and challenges will unlock for the characters as well?

  21. As long as it is just stages and music then Im fine with buying figurines. Having the toys unlock characters though would be a big no no, as well as unfair to hardcore players who work to unlock there characters.

  22. Pingback: NFC Funktion in Smash Bros Wii U | GAMECONTRAST

  23. They can’t be new characters, because the roster will be the same as the 3ds version. Maybe just unlockable costumes

  24. How would this be implemented? I can’t imagine Nintendo doing what Skyanders and Disney Infinity does with their figures as it would be a bit much and unnecessary. Can’t wait to see what it’s used for.

  25. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I like the sound of this. I’ll definitely be picking up any Legend of Zelda & Metroid related figurines for this game that interest me & come with some nice extra content.

  26. Imagine this with a Fire Emblem game. Buy the figure, get the character in game! Oh man… I am going to be so poor because of this awesomeness!!!

  27. Smash Bros isn’t using this technology. Why? Because Nintendo / Smash Team has NOT announced it yet. Everything is pure speculation, especially information coming from a gaming magazine.

  28. Also, why is the reply box at the bottom of the fucking page? I don’t wanna have to scroll light years just to reply. Please switch to disqus; much better layout!
