You may remember that back in April Nintendo registered a trademark titled Code Name S.T.E.A.M: Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace in the United States. Well it now turns out that the Kyoto based company has registered the same trademark in Japan. There was originally quite a bit of speculation regarding the title with some believing that could be a sequel to The Wonderful 101. With E3 coming up next month, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out exactly what S.T.E.A.M is.

It’s a trademark, they did not copyright it. So yes generic words like Apple and Windows can be trademarked for the purpose of a brand name . The only trouble is that Valve (another generic word that is trademarked, not copyrighted) is in the same industry and owns a trademark right to the word Steam. That’s where a potential confusion might be though Nintendo did clearly indicate it’s an acronym, so there is less likelihood of confusion and therefore less likely that Valve would be upset over it.
