Star Fox Wii U Will Have You Piloting A Helicopter With GamePad-Based Controls

Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down with TIME magazine to discuss his latest Wii U projects, including the newly leaked Star Fox game. Fans have clamoured for a new game to the series since the GameCube days, so it’s no surprise the game initially started out as a Wii title. However, since Nintendo has lacked the ability to utilise the GamePad fully in many of its first-party titles, rather rendering it as a map screen for the most part, Star Fox Wii U is set to change that.

Unfortunately, TIME magazine’s link to the article has been pulled, but we’ve gathered a few snippets from the interview which you can see below, including the control learning curve and the new helicopter vehicle within the game.

“I think Star Fox will be a game you spend a little bit of time getting used to the controls, but that once you do, then you’ll understand what’s fun about that experience. I don’t think it’ll take a lot of play time for people to get used to it. For most people, it’ll take maybe 30 minutes to an hour. So from that standpoint it’s not a game that’s particularly well-suited to displaying at a show like this, where you only have a short amount of time to play, so that’s why we held the event yesterday, to get everyone in to play for a longer period of time than they might normally.

“And then once you get used to the play style… I didn’t go into this detail the other night because it starts to get a little bit complicated, but once you get it, you’ll also be able to press a button to switch the view from one screen to the other. So you could play with the cockpit view on the TV and the fighter view down on the GamePad screen if you feel like that’s a better way to play.”

Miyamoto also mentioned how the new helicopter vehicle came into play: “With the helicopter, we’ve been thinking of the two-screen gameplay, and so that was one of the early ideas. One of the things we’re considering at this point is making the helicopter so you could have two pilots, two people playing together, and what that’ll allow is you could have one player piloting the helicopter, and another player who’s using another controller to control the robot.

“In the case of the Arwing spaceship, if you have two pilots, they’re most likely going to be sitting front-to-back, and you’ll have one piloting, the other able to look around. When you have someone piloting but someone else who can look around, what’s most beneficial to the person who’s looking around is the ability to look down below. In designing the Arwing we couldn’t quite think of a good way to have to redesign it so you’d have one player who could look down below. Thus we decided to create the helicopter.”

    1. FUCKING GAMEPAD CONTROLS, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

      1. yeah, well, we got a zelda game for the wii and controls ruined it

      2. Which game was that? Because Skyward Sword, Twilight Princess, and Link’s Crossbow Training were all great games. I LOVED the motion control in Skyward Sword. Sorry if your skills aren’t up to par to play the games.

      3. Me too…

If they continue the gameplay mechanics from SS, they should only improve it…

      4. skyward sword is a piece of shit, do NOT tell me otherwise, controls should always be precise, not get out of order every 10 seconds so you have to center them, or calibrate your wii remote every 5 minutes…takes you out of the immersion

      5. never really happened to me like that. I guess your controls were messed up kid.

      6. He is retarded, cannot play games that are a little more civilized than his brain…

      7. I actually liked the motion controls, gave me a sense that I was actually Link. Problem with the game – somewhat repetitive. Oh, and I got stuck at the Sky Keep. And still am.

      8. Indeed…

I hope Zelda U combines the best thing about SS with OoT/MM and ALBW…

      9. that never happened, you had to do it before you played the game and, click down on the d pad to center your pointer…ya bastard, you never even played it, haven’t you

      10. It wasnt the motion control, it is the recentering that bothers you, all you had to do is pause, press down on the d-pad to center it and unpause again, it was so simple that it didnt even bother me at all, the motion control were masterful and imagine if they brought out zelda again with these same control without the recentering of the control every now and then..

      11. Piece of shit in YOUR OPINION. Stop enforcing your opinion as fact when in the end it’s a debatable subject that you can never win.

      12. XD If you really did have to do that a lot, you either suck using innovative controllers or your Wii Motion Plus was broken. Go run to Sony & Microsoft if you want every single game to be nothing but button mashing. Time to retire from Nintendo video games, old man, if you can’t adapt to the new technology.

      13. To me the controls were good. The only only problem I had were when you stab it didn’t work at times

      14. Just go and get lost, we don’t need murderers and deathwishers in here…

      15. if that was the case, i’d be jerkin’ off uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

        starfox, my baby, come hither

      16. FUCKING GAMEPAD CONTROLS, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

  1. I find it irritating that many complains the lack of Gamepad use and now that we are getting it, most don’t want it…

    Hypocrites…

    1. I want Gamepad controls. That’s why I bought a Wii U after seeing the Rayman Legends concept trailer.

  2. Guys you need to be up to date with me at e3 i won’t be able to watch it live sp please post what happening. PLEASE

  3. 38 more minutes ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡can’t wait for trailer!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. 37 more minutes ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡can’t wait for trailer!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. This helicopter better be fast…… so it sounds like 1 player using the tv thats flying. the other player looking around in the games world being able to see 360 degrees and shooting. … might be the 1st 2 gamepad game.. I see a sf gamepad bundle maybe… if its something like this I will be very impressed but I would like to see it online against other players

  6. All hail Nintendo’s E3 of 2014. The best E3 since… the beginning of E3s!!!

What other surprises do they have in store for us? We literally only have 30 more minutes to wait until we find out!!!!

Que squeeling like a little chicka! EEEEeeeeek!

      1. Is that the sound you make when your rear end gets flooded with man juice, Midbus? x3

  7. So this is going to be like the same piece of shit starfox game, omg i want to see a new starfox adventures!!! That was a really good game!

    1. Damage control, damage control, hide the fact that you are mad.
Damage control, damage control, you must be very sad.

    2. I want another Star Fox Adventures too, but who knows. Maybe this new Star Fox game has on foot exploration as well as gamepad flight mechanics?

      That would be da’ bomb!

      1. Hopefully, the on-foot exploration won’t suck like it did on post Adventures Star Fox games. Then again, the on-foot gameplay of those Star Fox games reminded me a lot of Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs, for the Nintendo 64, on-foot gameplay. With that in mind, maybe I should give those Star Fox games another chance.

    3. Even if Nintendo was to make a Starfox Adventures game, that would be bad ass timing since Zelda U is coming out! Duh. Fox and Zelda needs.their own niches for the Wii U. It increase sales so if people don’t like space games you have Zelda.

    4. As awesome as Star Fox Adventures was, I prefer the original Star Fox game play. ESPECIALLY since the chances of us ever getting another Star Wars Rogue Squadron game is very slim with E-crybaby-A in charge of making Star Wars games if Disney doesn’t force them to make games for Nintendo systems.

    1. I’m so excited I can’t sit still. I am literally going to be hyperventilating during their direct. When they show the new Zelda, I’m going to scream so hard, my neighbors are going to think I’m being murdered.

      1. Error 404. Hype has damaged a personality core. Starting reboot and restoring files, damage maybe permanent. Unable to process any given request at this moment.

  8. I really hope Krystal is still on the team and this game isn’t a complete series reboot :(

    1. I’m surprised there isn’t anything new for Star Fox on Smash, maybe more information on this game will reveal the return of Falco and or Wolf. Could include Krystal if she’s revealed to be in the new Star Fox. They have to do something new for a stage instead of flying on a ship. Krystal confirmed, Dinosaur Planet stage on Smash U!

  9. Definitelyy needs online play. Hopefully they do the 3DS way where you see the pilots faces! I loved seeing my friends doomed faces as they were helplessly shot down
