Aonuma Teases Fans By Saying “No One Explicitly Said That Was Link” In Zelda Wii U Trailer

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma sure likes to tease fans in the new Zelda for Wii U trailer shown at Nintendo’s E3 Digital Event yesterday. In a recent interview with Venture Beat, Aonuma has sent the game’s fans reeling after an off-the-cuff remark on Link’s newly speculated feminine appearance: “No one explicitly said that was Link.”

While the trailer shows the protagonist in Wind Waker garb, it also reveals he – or she – is right-handed, with Link commonly referred to as left-handed within the game series. The producer has previously remarked on making Princess Zelda into a playable character after a fan petition made the rounds to Nintendo, saying it was “something to consider”. So, could a feminine or androgynous protagonist be plausible? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Thanks, Brinsa

      1. it`s the daughter of link and zelda. and remember zelda as sheik… really flat boobs… or no boobs at all

        1. Perhaps this game is a direct sequel to Skyward Sword, with the protagonist being the child of Link and Zelda.

  1. Could be an ability to change appearance, which would affect what powers you have

Also what’s androgynous? Forgive me, I’m an idiot

You see how Marth looks a bit feminine? That’s pretty much androgynous: being able to pass yourself off as a girl/woman with ease, or vice versa.

    2. If someone is androgynous, you can’t tell if he/she’s male of female just by looks. In other words, that person looks both feminine and masculine.

It should also be noted that this is a fashion statement in Japan from what I’ve heard. It’s quite popular which is why you tend to see characters like Marth & Ghirahim popping up in a lot of Japanese games.

It doesn’t mean they are weird. What’s wrong? Are you afraid it’s going to make you less of a man to be attracted to someone that looks like a woman but is in fact a man?

    4. andro is from Greek andras which means man and gynous is from Greek gineo> ginaika whuch means woman, so you get the idea

If Aonuma was being serious, interesting. This makes me want the game even more! If this is a hint to future Legend of Zelda titles with Link being accompanied by a second controllable character, preferably a woman, I’ll finally have a Zelda game me & the wife can play together as a couple.

First things first, Cindyaa. Aonuma & Nintendo has to RELEASE a Legend of Zelda game like this first. lol

        1. yes, I know, i just said that I thought your idea interesting. I would love to play a Legend of Zelda like this, i would play it with my boyfriend too.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

The Legend of Zelda: Heroes of–oh screw it. I’ll leave the awesome name up to Nintendo. They never disappoint with the subtitle name of a Zelda game.

  3. Most likely is Link, since the hair is similar to him in the past games. Remember in Zelda games before starting you have the choice on changing Link’s name, so it’d be weird if you could change Zelda’s name. Unless it’s a new female character,

  4. Link is the predominate protaganist, but this character is too link/esque to qualify him to not be the focal character, so if link IS in the new zelda, why make a protaganist that can easily be confused as a new design?

    Multiplayer

Im thinking similarly to Nintendoland, the Zelda minigame. this character is an Archer, so we may have multiple charaters to fit this pattern in an open world RPG party experience..

  5. This could be Zelda ( or a male version of Zelda ). In Wind Waker, when you are fighting Ganondorf, Zelda was helping you by shooting light arrows. She used her right arm to shoot the arrows. So, there’s a possibility that this person could be Zelda.

  6. When I use my “common sense” the first person that comes to my mind is Link. So, I’ll keep it that way.

  7. he just simply plays the hype game. it will be link. dont give in to it. theres probably more than a year until it comes out anyway.

  8. ahah, I’m so surprised today by seeing pacman in SSB and this news.. I think that I’m the only person that don’t think that this guy looks like a girl at all.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

That would be awesome. And Link makes a cameo appearance. Or Link ends up being the one kidnapped for once & sets off this boy’s quest to save his father.

  9. He also never said that it’s not Link. But it’s fucking Link. All if the conventions are there. The only thing missing is the green tunic. The sword is on the horse as he jumps from the horse you see a hilt of a sword. It could just be he’s shaking up Links outfit or its before he gets the Tunic.

If he legit never made comment nobody would have doubted that its Link. He’s trying to get people to talk about it and now everyone is. Eiji be trolling.

  10. No new hero appears…So Zelda takes it upon herself to become that hero…Or, it’s just Link (around 13 or 14 years old).
Also, “Nobody said it was Link” can also mean “nobody said it wasn’t”.

  11. Nintendo is my Blood

hmm, I thought there was something different about “Link” but part of me says that the Zelda U trailer we saw last year looked exactly like Link so either we can play as two characters kinda like in WW or Aonuma is effing with our minds by saying “It is Link but I didn’t explicitly say it was Link”

  12. Well Link HAS a sister in Wind Waker, remember..? And given he/she wasn’t exactly super-skilled with the bow in the trailer and I don’t think we heard a voice..

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

      Nope nope that’s definitely Link
Think about it, did Aonuma did not actually say Link’s name therefore he literally did not say that was Link in the trailer, so that is most likely Link and Aonuma is just messing with us

    2. I was also thinking WW Link’s sister. But whether it’s her or Link, male or female, it all works for me.

  13. Eiji-san wants to shake up thing far enough with me but there is some stuffs he should not change and that link and zelda. saying that I don’t mind if the quest is being seen from several points of view (link being one of them). i do believe that Eiji-san should be able to create his own IP after that zelda. I do believe he has tons of ideas which are not fit for a zelda game but for a new IP. I am looking forward to see the result of his input for Hyrule warriors

      1. Actually in the trailer he is right handed. If he was left handed he would be pulling back the string with the left hand. However, I also think it is Link because of the fact that he is wearing a blue earring on his left ear.

  14. Well, of course this isn’t Link. It isn’t Link, because it is YOU, the player. I’m pretty sure you’ll just be able to name the hero yourself and customise him with armor, weapons etc.

  15. Would be nice to play as Zelda in a game with her name in the title. Link would appreciate it too since he can show up to the Smash Club without members confusing who they’re cheering for when he fights. Also, nobody said a princess, if she stays a princess in the story, has to dress in the traditional garb all the time, or that she has to be particularly well endowed. As another commenter pointed out, too, Zelda may simply be quite young if she is the one depicted on screen. Along those lines, there is precedent, after all, with Tetra in Windwaker.

  16. I thought Link looked a little feminine especially with the hair. Could this be a new descendant of Link like a grand daughter or something? Who knows? I just hope Link will be in this game and will be playable.

  17. To me Link has always been the “link” to the players. I feel that regardless of this being a girl or boy Link, they will always be Link since they are what connects the users to the game itself.

    1. Damn straight. I love LOZ (it’s my favorite series), but if they do that, I will not buy it. No problem with female characters, but don’t screw with an already established series just have to a female headlining the game. Link is the protagonist. You want a female protagonist, play Tomb Raider, Bayonetta, Metroid, etc.

  18. What if it is Aryll? A slightly older, pre teen or early teen Aryll, playable in a small part of the game…

  19. Could be links son.. If this takes after Skyward sword. He looks like a mix of SS link and zelda. They’re probably the only versions of link and zelda who actually wanted to be a couple. they could have had a child, and link’s son his helping dad on his journey. Maybe hinting at the multiplayer that Aonuma what hinting about before.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Agreed. If any Link & Zelda should be together, it would definitely be their Skyward Sword era incarnations. If this ends up being the case, it means that every Link we’ve played was a direct descendant of the Hyrule Royal Family just like Zelda. And it would also explain how a new hero was born in Wind Waker which was by way of OoT Princess Zelda’s bloodline. And it would also finally put to rest one of the biggest debates of Zelda I take part in: whether Link is reborn through reincarnation or reborn through a familial bloodline.

  20. Why do people keep talking about how feminine this “Link” looked? He (or she) looks just as feminine as all Links look. Link always had a rather feminine look to his face.

  21. i would love to play as a female link, not link that looks female, an actual female. it might break from tradition which aonuma did say he wants to break from tradition

  23. Of course it’s Link. Look at his hair. And he’s riding A horse that looks very similar to Epona. Why would they make a new character and have that character look almost identical to link? And honestly I never once thought he was a girl until I heard the rumor…

    Conclusion= It’s Link, and he’s a dude.

  24. Phew I didnt like the idea of Link having a ponytail. ( I dont hate people with ponytails its just that i wouldnt like link to have one) Also whats with the science fiction robos

  25. I don’t even want this new Zelda anymore, it looks awful, just the way Skyward Sword did, and boy skyward sword was a let down

  26. It’s a co-op Zelda game. This kid is Link’s younger brother, you control one link with the game pad and the other with a different controller

  27. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I’ve always believed Zelda used the Triforce of Wisdom to change not just her appearance but her gender when she took on the form of Sheik. Maybe the game will reveal half way through that we’ve been playing Zelda the entire time trying to save Link. Then we transition over to the real Link as Zelda gets kidnapped or even possibly tags along with Link as the game allows you to switch between the 2 throughout the rest of the game as some of Zelda’s personal abilities are needed to progress through other parts of the game. That would DEFINITELY turn the series upside down.
