Sonic Movie Confirmed, Producer Neal Moritz Signs On Upright Citizen Brigade Alums As Writers

The Sonic the Hedgehog film is now well under way at Sony Pictures after a leak for the “dark and edgy” movie was spotted back in March. Fast & Furious producer Neal Moritz will head up the team and has also signed on two new writers. Upright Citizen Brigade Theatre alums Evan Sussar and Van Robichaux will pen the hybrid computer-animated and live-action feature, alongside Sega Sammy’s division Marza Animation Planet leading the visuals.

Though there are no plot details to hand as of yet, the Sonic movie will star many of the series most loved characters, including Dr. Eggman. Sony Pictures has had movie-going success with hybrid animated films such The Smurfs and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  Marza Animation’s CEO Masanao Maeda said the following in support of the film:

“Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen. Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we’re confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him.”

  1. Hmmm I’m not sure about this but if Ratchet and Clank can have a good looking movie that actually looks like the in game cutscenes if not better, then I won’t worry as much about this one

  2. Nintendo is my Blood

I don’t think they should do it, movies should be movies and video games should be video games, if it didn’t work with the Super Mario Bros. Movie, it won’t work for Sonic that’s for sure

What is it with every movie going “Batman begins” since it came out?…

How about being creative for once…

How popular can a movie about Sonic be? I mean it is so specific to make a movie about a game as simple as Sonic

You can’t believe that a movie about a platformer game can become a intricate movie

      What would the plot be?

  4. Expect “you’re too slow” to be uttered copiously in a scene of Sonic waterboarding someone, or something.

Hm. Interesting. Very interesting. I actually look forward to this. I want to see if they can actually make a good Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Since I’m a fan of Sonic, I wish this movie the best of luck since Sony can do some good movies. Let’s just hope this movie tries to be less of a video game & more of a movie. *cough*SuperMarioBrosmovie*cough* Aww. Now I made myself sad. RIP Bob Hoskins!

The only movies based on games that are entertaining enough are the Resident Evil movies…

Yes they do not follow the game or have the horror feel at all but they are entertaining and I love Milla…

I love the Resident Evil movies. Maybe when they reboot them, they will give the new series more of a horror feel to them with the action trimmed down to horror level action.

I will admit that the Super Mario Bros movie is a guilty pleasure of mine since the actors can do some good work when under the right director.

Anyway, maybe the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will actually surprise us. I’ll wait for a trailer to pass final judgement on this endeavor of Sega’s.

  6. The problem with movies going batman begins is that they think darker and edgier is what made the movie sell. Darker doesn’t sell, smarter sells. Darker for the sake of darker only gives us a repeat of shadow the hedgehog coughcoughpanderingcough.

  7. The Dark Knight movie were great because they were well written, not because they were dark, and a Sonic movie can be done well if it is written good, it does not matter if the tone of a movie is serious or lighthearted, its the writing that matters. The series for Sonic is not just comedy and funny stuff, it can be serious if it is balanced. Take a look at the American Sonic comics, sure they may not be part if the mainstream series, but they are very balanced when it comes to a story and tone, the movie needs to have a balance of both in order to be good, if an action movie is too dark, it because too much for teenagers and pre-teens, but if a movie is too light-hearted, people will start to loose their expectations with it. Balance is the success to any kind of action movie.

  8. This person get’s the idea, the written is what important, not the tone of the movie, it does not matter if the movie is light-hearted or serious, its the writting that matters.
