Aonuma Says ‘I Hear The Fans’ Regarding A Zelda Majora’s Mask Remake For Nintendo 3DS

Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has said that he hears the fans cries for a Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask remake for the Nintendo 3DS. A lot of people were expecting the game to be announced yesterday, but it turns out we got the intriguing Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Here’s what Aonuma had to say to Kotaku.

Schreier: I have to ask… I asked readers what questions I should ask you, and the number one question was that you’ve hinted so many times about a new Majora’s Mask or a Majora’s Mask remake for the 3DS—will we ever see that?

Aonuma: I do know that fans want to see Majora’s Mask. I’ve heard that voice, it’s very, very strong, and I’m always listening, is what I would say.

Schreier: I think people reacted to the teaser in A Link Between Worlds, the mask in the house. People saw that and thought it was a hint for the future, so that’s why people are excited about that.

Aonuma: Maybe I was toying with them a little. (laughter) I’m doing everything I can. I hear the voices of the fans. There are so many out there. It’s very loud, and just to acknowledge the fact that the need, the want is out there, I put that in there

Thanks, Kallum

  1. who the heck wants these remakes. wii u needs frinken destiny and battlefield hardline or gta v. not no remake or a boring game from the 2000s.

    1. Obviously a lot of people want them, especially those who never got to play the N64 original, like me for example.

        1. Not many people want to play a game that’s over a decade old. A remake gives Nintendo the chance to improve the original (thanks to newer technology) and introduce it to new audiences.

        2. First, learn to spell and use proper punctuation. Also who the hell are you waste of seminal fluid to even title one of the greatest games from Nintendo? You’re nothing that’s what.

          1. You need a comma after the word “also”, the second sentence makes no sense, and neither does the third. Majora’s Mask is one of the greatest games of all time. “That’s what” Kyle!

      1. I’d prefer they remade oot, mm, ss, and tp for Wii U so they were in HD, what’s the point in making them for only a slight upgrade? We know their going to remake those games one day any ways!

    2. Yes, because they need games which are on competing platforms that perform a lot better with those games. Ports are the wrong way to go about things, as they would be clearly inferior the copies on other consoles. What Nintendo needs to do is somehow make more major third parties create exclusive content for the Wii U.

    3. boring game? obviously this idiot doesn’t know the difference between a good game or a crappy game…that’s why you like narutard games because they are shit

    4. Why do you want Zelda rehash !?? This serious is starting to become like Mario now. First or all this game is so overrated and second Nintendo fans will not let go of the past it’s pathetic.

Sasori will show you the way of “true next gen” nirvana and it’s rich blessings..

    5. Ok, I only kind of agree with you. Yes it would be great to play those games on Wii U, but Majora’s Mask is also one of the best Zelda games. It deserves a remake. Oh and HD PEOPLE! HD! NOT 3D!

    6. i needed, because its the best zelda game. i would like to have it for wii u.
      maybe a sequel…
      anyway dosent mattet which console.
      buy day one

  2. MM is my favorite game of all time, and I could care less if there’s a remake made or not. I love the game as is on my Nintendo 64, and it still works. That said, with all the support behind a possible remake, it would be in Nintendo’s best interest to release it, preferably on the Wii U, to cut down on the wait for Zelda Wii U.

    1. That’s kind of what Wind Waker HD and Hyrule Warriors were made for. You mean Nintendo needs a 3rd Wii U Zelda game to bridge the wait?

      1. Seeing as how Aonouma said that Zelda would appear in playable form at next year’s E3, it will be released late 2015 at the earliest. Fans are screaming for a remake. Yes, it would do the same thing as WW HD. Hyrule Warriors was a way of connecting to other third parties.

    1. I may be an athiest (what else am I supposed to be? a christian?), but I wear berets and top hats thank you very much. Also, this is a real fedora: http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/belfry-gangster_black.jpg
Not this hipster shit: http://i.stpost.com/mountain-hardwear-sun-fedora-hat-upf-50-for-women-in-cordovan~p~5436w_01~1500.3.jpg , Rim length makes a world of difference, 3 inches? you’re an italian mafia guy, shave off 2 inches, you’re a faggot.

  3. Palutena dammit Aonuma, stop being so cryptic and ambiguous!!! …. (actually don’t ever stop, we love you for that)

    1. Those take a long time to make, with remakes they can push out games fast and introduce old games to new audiences

  4. If its a simple port with some minor textural update much like the Ocarina of Time 3D, I’m not really excited for that. However, If it was a proper remake with improved models, shading, updated orchestral music, then yes I would be jumping for joy. Otherwise, that time and resources could be best spent on a sequel or prequel to Majora’s Mask.

    1. The prequel to MM is ocarina of time and honestly MM is one of those games that doesn’t need a sequel

      1. I’m not talking about Link’s story… I’m talking about the history of Termina and the Mask of Majora.

    2. But OoT3D HAD new models. It wasn’t just a simple port with “minor textural update”.

And there’d hardly be any time and “resources”. 90% OF those resources were already created for OoT3D. All they have to do is import everything. The only work they’d have to do is do a few dungeons. FOUR dungeons.

      1. My eyes detected rather simple models in the game… the blocky kind. I think that they could do better. If you think otherwise, that’s your opinion and this is mine.

  5. lol must be good at deceiving kids to buy their remakes. i bet they put it at $50-60 just for a 1gb game.

  6. I’ve been waiting for a Majora’s Mask remake for some time- MM is my favorite Zelda title. What upsets me is that MM came between OoT and WW yet WW got a remake first. And honestly, I’m torn over which system a remake should come to- MM on Wii U could make the game that much scarier thanks to HD graphics, but who doesn’t want to stare at the moon creeping its way down to you in 3D?

I want Majora’s Mask 3D so it can go right next to my download of Ocarina of Time 3D on my 3DS menu.

  7. I want Ocarina Of Time and Majora’s Mask on Wii U. In HD. I hate looking at that little 3DS screen. And you can’t share the experience with others. I bought Ocarina Of Time 3D, and never cared about playing it. But if it was on Wii U, that’s a different story. As long as it was a physical release and not a stupid digital one.

  8. However……Majora’s Mask is my least favorite Zelda game. While it had many fun aspects, it felt like a huge side-quest instead of an adventure. And I despised having to go back to day one or day two over and over. Then nobody remembers who you are, even after helping them. That takes away all satisfaction from helping anyone.

    1. The whole story is deeper than that though and better. Also, beating MM is more satisfying than beating OoT.

      1. XD XD XDD XD XD XD This comment made me legitimately laugh. The way you said it was priceless. Lol.

      2. Nobody said you had to buy it… I would if it were a necessary upgrade, visually, gameplay should stay the same though.

        1. pink0crystal0midbus

No, you don’t understand… I would “have” to buy it. I had this sort of “need” where I buy anything Zelda. So I would buy it whether I want to or not. I don’t want a Majora’s Mask remake, because I don’t really like Majora’s Mask. It is my least favorite Zelda ever, but if they remake it….

I “have” to buy it, because…I can’t even.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

You poor thing. Legend of Zelda is so great that it has your mind in a strangle hold. xD

  9. Throw in a Master Quest version of Majora’s Mask and I’ll be interested. Other than that, I think they should hurry with making 64 games available so I can play on the gamepad

    1. I hear you. What are they waiting for? They could put out OoT and MM (Star Fox, Pokémon Stadium and so many other great N64 games) for a revised price like they did with Link’s Awakening and I would (again) throw my money their way for games I already own and have finished multiple times.

    2. pink0crystal0midbus

my god.. Majora’s Mask was hard as it is (actually I’ve never been able to beat it :P) so a Master Quest would be bonkers hard!!!

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Some people have been craving for a difficult Legend of Zelda game for awhile now. Maybe the people craving this game are those exact same people that want a challenge in their Legend of Zelda again.

  10. Majora’s Mask is one of the most polarizing Zelda titles because of it’s time mechanic. That said it is, in my opinion, the deepest, most character driven of the franchise. One man’s monotony is another man’s gravitas. So I completely understand the reticence to produce it and the lack of interest in some sectors of fandom but I think the market is there. And, Anouma-San, if you really just put that Mask on the wall in Link Between Worlds to tease those of us who are waiting anxiously for the announcement…that’s cold.

On the other hand, maybe an HD remake instead of a 3D one would finally force the hand of this fanboy into purchasing a Wii U. Even I have held out.

    1. Aonuma-San is quite known now for making ‘cruel’ jokes if you will about TLoZ games… But so far, only to reveal months after that a game is indeed under way, which means he made the joke only because he would be able to show us something later, which in turn has strong probabilities of meaning… There is a Majora’s Mask remake on the way. That is Aonuma-San ‘s unique way of creating hype.

  11. Majora’s Mask already looked great on the N64, N64 was the ultimate way to experience it and the gameplay is superb the way it is (so the game would not benefit at all from the play style of the 3DS…or Wii U Gamepad for that matter).

All that said… 3DS although decent graphics-wise, would not make a great difference visually from the N64 version (if MM was made for the handheld). I think most people are looking forward to a significant graphical revamp of the type only Wii U can provide.

Also 3DS is already selling well enough, it is Wii U that needs as many thousands of sales as it can get, and a Majora’s Mask game could certainly sell some thousands of systems (and a million copies for sure) .

So, it is for this reasons that I think a Wii U version of TLoZ Majora’s Mask, makes much more sense.

    1. To be honest, I wish they hadn’t done the Ocarina of Time on the 3DS. It should have been an HD remake along with Majora’s Mask which would have made a killer two-game bundle.

Still, I wouldn’t mind picking it up again for the Wii-U if Nintendo did do that but they won’t. So, bring on Majora’s Mask HD for the Wii-U. :)

  12. everyone at nintendo are a bunch of trolls, and that is why i like nintendo, they tease us and say they are one “currently” working on said game and before we can blink they slap us with what we want

  13. I personally don’t care if it’s on Wii U or 3DS. Firstly, 3DS is a big step up graphically from the N64, as shown by OoT 3D. Secondly, the 3DS is portable. A portable Majora’s Mask would be nice. Ultimately the key point is that Majora’s Mask is the only Zelda game I’m yet to own in some form. It’s expensive for N64, and I’ve heard people having issues with the virtual console version. I just want a remake for it, whether that be 3D or HD, I don’t really care. Just give me an excuse to shell out for this game.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Agreed. But I will admit I prefer it on the 3DS, so I can download it & put it right next to my download of Ocarina of Time 3D.

  14. I played Ocarina 3D for The first time last year. It may be old and retro, still I enjoyed it to bits! Majora’s Mask 3D would be a no brainer for me.

  15. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

A remake of Majora’s Mask for the 3DS is a must have for me since Ocarina of Time, the game that Majora’s mask is a direct sequel to, has been remade for the 3DS. Majora’s Mask 3D will go nicely right next to my download of Ocarina of Time 3D, as I’ve said in a few other comments on this article. But I wouldn’t mind if it got remade for the Wii U only. It would suck if that actually ends up being the case, but I’d get over it once I actually play Majora’s Mask HD on my Wii U.

  16. the problem is fans want it but it does not mean, the number of request will be transformed into a sale. From a business point of view Nintendo knows there is an interest and they are thinking about it. Now the issue is: does nintendo will start the development after Zelda WII U or it’s already into development phase? One think to keep it mind is the 3DS hardware sales start slowing down and a new hardware needs to be release in the next 2 years or so. Major’s Mask will have a remake for sure but the question is which platform? And I don’t think it will be on 3DS some how.

    1. Zelda’s going to sell well, no matter what. And it would only make sense after a OoT remake. Plus, it would be cheap to make, considering Grezzo already has the engine for OoT 3D. This really is a no brainer for Nintendo. I don’t want to say Nintendo is being stupid, but……… that’s king of a fitting word for what’s going on here.and also, Aounuma just teasing us like this is just mean. I’m really just puzzled by so many of his decisions. And anyway, if the amount of requests of MM 3D got Majora’s Mask in LINK’S HOUSE in the last game, there really should BE enough sales for it to be profitable!!!! But knowing Aounuma, the old bastard’s probably just teasing us AGAIN. ARRRGGGHHH

  18. I personally would rather a Majoras Mask remake for the wii u. I want my son to and I to enjoy this classic game (that won awards for its storyline btw) on the high def 65 inch flat screen we just got for Christmas. I do not like little systems like 3DS and game boy. To me thats something you have when you are a teenager so you can take it with you on car rides. I do my game play at home and would rather see Majoras mask in high def completely remade.

  22. How is Majora’s Mask so many people’s least favorite Zelda game with Zelda II on the table and if you wanna get technical, all the CD-i zelda games? I would sell my first son for a Majora’s remake for the Wii U and not regret it for a second.
