Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has reassured Nintendo fans that the Wii U has a long life ahead of it. Reggie was asked by Kotaku whether it would be best at this point for Nintendo to scrap the console and start over to which Reggie said a defiant, no. He concluded by saying the Wii U has great content coming to it.
Totilo: The company has lost money lately, which is unusual in its long history, and if you look at 3DS it started sluggishly, there was a dramatic price cut and that helped turn that business around. If someone comes to you and says, ‘Reggie, just refresh, just start over, do a new console, do-over,’ You say?
Fils-Aime: I say, ‘No.’ And the reason I say that is because we believe the Wii U has a very long life ahead of it. It’s got great content coming that will help define the platform. For us, we think the 3DS is a very illustrative example. It wasn’t just the price cut. It was having great content that started with Kart 7 and 3D Land and then progressed and created a larger and larger footprint
first
Wii U is finally getting some traction with their heavy hitting IPs finally coming out and people think it would be a good ide for them just to release new hardware?!
baffling isn’t it?
i was just waiting for kotaku to propose yet another price cut to be honest
I don’t get how people can be so nostalgic for the GameCube and then turn right around and say “trash the Wii U and start over”. Guys, Wii U IS the new GameCube.
In reality, the Wii U IS becoming the new Nintendo 3DS (minus the 3, though). The HD system is gonna share the same fate as its 3D portable system.
It’s the new GC because….?
Starts off awful and gets better when they actually release games and the 3rd parties start coming
Nope. Not even the GC was selling this slow.
Yeah but GC launched with heavy hitters lile Smash and Kart
True. Nintendo really dropped the ball this time….
Nonsense, Mario Kart launched two years later!
Because of smash bros duh and Double dash and sunshine. It was also wayy cheaper
30 million lifetime sales is slow if you ask me. But looking at Vita, that’s even more abysmal.
Except the Gamecube was badass and had some of the best games in the world such as Metroid and Resident evil…..
Wii U will have amazing titles like Metroid and Resident evil later in its life dude. Its only two years old.
Resident evil is cool but Metroid is overrated, Wii U doesnt need that, they need to buy capcom if theu want to win.
Wii U already has Resident Evil.
Jeg er en faens Bie!!!!! BUZZ!!! BUZZ!!!
Question for the Commander..how are you always online when ever someone mentions you, you appear. Frankly, I’m jealous of your power. Perhaps your a mod?and I’m not talking British mods I’m talkin moderator
I think you’re talking to the wrong being here…
Fuck off bitch
Det var jo bra for deg da. :)
first party gamecube games weren’t even close to being as good as the n64’s and wii’s. i
Wind Waker>Skyward Sword
Metroid Prime>Other M
Melee>Smash 64 and Brawl
Paper Mario: TTYD>Paper Mario and Super PM
Mario Kart Double Dash>MKWii
Mario Party 4>MP9
Colluseum/XD>Battle Revolution
What were you saying again?
Prime 3=Prime
Brawl vs Melee debatable – I’ve personally put more hours into Brawl
MKWii is clearly superior to DD in my opinion, online was a real good point but even without it
Galaxy 1 & 2>Sunshine
Strikers Charged>Strikers
Wii has good Nintendo 2D platformers
Warioware smooth moves>GameCube Warioware
And Wii has a more plentiful library besides. The GameCube has a good library but please spare me with its constant glorification. It’s most notable for Melee – without Melee GC immediately becomes Nintendo’s least important console by a distance. I’m fed up of being told how much better than the Wii it is.
GameCube was definitely a good system, but the wii doesn’t have it beat by a mile. One of the “exclusives” that had the GameCube a cut above the rest went on to be ported a billion times. With that said…
Prime>prime 3
Galaxy>sunshine
Paper Mario TTYD> Super PM
Brawl>melee
MK DDash>MK Wii
I haven’t played LoZ SS yet, nor did I play Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, so I can’t compare them to Wind Waker or Path of Radiance, respectively.
Both systems were even, at least for me, GameCube had a lot of exclusives as did the wii. Wii u isn’t anywhere near those two…yet!
Kudos on not comparing games you haven’t played. I’ve personally played Skyward Sword and WWHD, and IMO Skyward Sword was better.
metacritic scores beg to differ on quite a few of those comparisons
namely zelda (N64… ocarina of time? possibly the best game of all time?) smash bros (wii), paper mario(N64) and mario party(N64)
also you conveniently forgot about mario galaxy which is arguably the best entry in the mario series to date
i suggest you look them up before making tall claims about what is obviously just your own opinion
I’m never mentioned mario galaxy though, I was comparing games of each series, plenty of gamecube games were better than the wii and n64 versions like wind waker being better than skyward sword, melee being better than brawl or 64
yes and as i said you conveniently forgot to mention one of the biggest series nintendo has to offer in order to further your argument because you knew that galaxy is better than sunshine was
what you apparently didn’t know was that public opinion on a couple of the other games was also quite different from yours
and apparently you didn’t heed my advice because you *still* don’t know
super smash bros has a metacritic score of 93, melee has a metacritic score of 92
the gamecube had a couple of very good games but that doesn’t make your comment any less wrong
brawl compared to melee, not the 64 version i mean
GCN’s Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance > Wii’s FE: Radiant Dawn
GCN’s Animal Crossing > Wii’s AC: City Folk
GCN’s Tales of Symphonia > Wii’s ToS: Dawn of the New World
GCN’s Super Monkey Ball > Wii’s SMB: Banana Blitz
GCN’s Super Monkey Ball 2 > Wii’s SMB: Banana Blitz
GCN’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time > Wii’s PoP: The Forgotten Sands
GCN’s PoP: Warrior Within > Wii’s PoP: The Forgotten Sands
GCN’s PoP: The Two Thrones > Wii’s PoP: The Forgotten Sands.
GCN’s PoP: TTT > Wii’s PoP: Rival Swords, the censored Wii version of The Two Thrones.
GCN also hosted
+Wave Race: Blue Storm (so far the last in the series)
+F-Zero GX (so far the last console version in the series)
+Eternal Darkness
+5 Resident Evils (REbirth & Ø being exclusives [yes, eventually on Wii), & RE4 being a timed exclusive [yes, eventually on Wii]).
+2 Viewtifu Joes
+Batman Vengeance (the best gameplay of any Batman game imo)
+Skies of Arcadia Legends
+Killer7
+Crazy Taxi
+Soul Calibur II
+2 Baten Kaitoses
+Sphinx & the Cursed Mummy
+Robotech: Battlecry
+Luigi’s Mansion (though only 5 hrs. long, so I basically paid $10 an hr. for fun, which is a bit steep).
+Beyond Good & Evil
But, I didn’t care for 3D Mario ’til Wii (Galaxy & G2). & for that matter, I didn’t really care for 2D Mario ’til New SMB DS. & the Wii did have MadWorld, 2 No More Heroes, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, Sin & Punishment, Okami, Tenchu: Shadow Assassins, Donkey Kong Country Returns (> GCN’s Donkey Konga, I guess), The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Mushroom Men, a better & larger lineup of Sonic titles, Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes was > GCN’s Mystic Heroes, etc.
But, I’d still pick GCN as the better console. I guess the way games were made in the 6th gen, receiving Dreamcast titles, & that GCN was the last console to visually impress me (yes, I’ve played on PS3 & 360, & I own a Wii U & have seen footage of PS4 & X1 games & still I yawn, save for inspired æsthetics), are the main reasons why I’d choose it over Wii. Even the mini discs had a certain charm. Sure, Wiimotes improved shooters & sports games, & added depth to games like Heatseeker & The Sky Crawlers, & surely Nnintendo’s software magic finally translated into their hardware w/ Wii & Wii U, but the 6th gen climate just felt special.
So ture only people born in 2000 like wii
Gamecube is the best Nintendo console hands down.
Super Smash Bros. Melee > Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime > Metroid Prime 3
Mario Kart Double Dash > Mario Kart Wii
Zelda: Twilight Princess > Skyward Sword
Pokemon Colosseum > Battle Revolution
You were saying?
he is basically saying that they wont do what sega did and he has a piont, wii u has a lot of games coming now and beyond
Things they can do to keep going
Turn VC into a Netflix survive with the option to buy the games. Have them rendered in HD even game cube and N64.
Dedicate a new studio to making HD collections and remakes of classics (HD box with oot, tp, ss, and mm) as a Zelda HD collection with different controller options (gamepad, or remote, or pro controller)
Work with Netflix to make original showed based on IP, put clips of these shows in Nintendo video and eshop
QOL needs to be about education, clothing, furniture, health, personal fitness, and connecting with others
Buy out Sega and platinum, do cross overs, revive old unused IP by letting new talent work on them.
Let experienced directors push the development comfort zone, let them do stuff that might seem not so “Nintendo like”
Get into comics, create something were the game is just part of the story, but books/comics/ shows/ movies add to the story and experience.
Borden the scope of being a software and hardware company.
Invest in start up companies that appeal to the Nintendo philosophy
Couldn’t agree more on all of this. I wish Nintendo would buy out SEGA and but Mega Man from Capcom…….
wii u is the new gamecube and 3ds, underated yet having great content, games and balancing gameplay with grphics (great games with great graphics)
Come on Nintendrones.. When has Reggie “Black Jewsus” Fils-Aime ever tell you the truth. This man is lying. They will support Wii U up until Zelda U and once that bombs harder than a sand jockey you can rest assure it’s going to find a shallow grave next to E.T in a New Mexico desert. …Awaiting a condescending quick witty your irrelevant comment from ValveGlados. Your like Juno without the sex appeal…
where’s sasori a.k.a jesuCHRIS CHAN?
*jesus CHRIS CHAN
the idiot who worship sasori is as imbecile as is “god” go and fap while watching his memes
it’s official sasori is the new Chris Chan LMFAO
jesuCHRIS CHAN, lol. GOOD ONE!!

accept that your “god” is a lolcow and is the laughingstock of everybody on internet
what’s your problem?. The gamepad is a nice feature, the Wii U has an incredible content, indies are doing a great job, your god denies that because he hates indies. So, your god hates girls, gays -your god is gay, but even gays do not want to be with him-, and hates indies because they do not make “AAA” games.
repeat before me:
“I deny sasori obinna onuorah the deceiver . . . and I abjure the sasori faith”
#sasoriisbutthurt
*repeat after me
Man you are funny. Given the amount of cash they just made from Mariokart 8 I think Ninty is feeling pretty confident that they can pull the same trick with Smash only on a bigger level. Expect to see the WIi U ship crazy numbers this Christmas. What will sell PS4s this holiday? Feck and all mate.
Thank you for your no one gives a shit input Church of Chris Chan 2.0
No. The GameCube is superior to the Wii U (in my opinion).
GameCube has the better controller, the better games, and UNLIKE the Wii U with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 today, the GameCube was more powerful than the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox.
Cue the flame wars when someone tells me that the Wii U is more powerful than PS4 and Xbone.
Well you can’t really say it has better games, the wii u is nowhere near done yet
So far the GameCube has better games, BUT the Wii U does look promising. Super Mario 3D World and the Wind Waker Remake make me still want a Wii U.
Just because the GameCube is SUPERIOR does not mean the Wii U is bad.
Well what games did the gamecube have 2 years into it’s life?
If you don’t have 3D world, go get it. GOTY IMO.
2 years into its life, the GameCube already had Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, and Resident Evil REmake. Pretty brilliant games to have so early in its life.
And Wii U will have Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2 (+1), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Wind Waker HD.
That’s not bad either!
GameCube
-485MHz IBM CPU
-162MHz ATI GPU
-40MB overall RAM
Xbox
-733MHz Intel CPU
-230MHz nVidia GPU
-64MB RAM
May look better on paper but GC was more efficient, Halo lookked like shit compared to MP
I… didn’t know that the first Xbox was more powerful.
I was totally owned.
T_T
I agree with this statement. Wii U is awesome but I had way more fun with Gamecube. I might even go pick up another one someday.
I would argue that VC makes the Wii U better. If the Wii u gets Game cube VC then basically it can play every game ever made on any Nintendo home console.
If the Wii U gets VC I will change my opinion about GameCube VS Wii U
if they bring Resident Evil 4.
Obviously Wii U is supporting ALL games and controllers including GameCube so Wii U is beyond its league and you’re out of yours by saying Wii U is better when Wii U can also do GameCube and far much more.
The Wii U still doesn’t have GameCube GAMES doe.
Super Mario Sunshine is superior to Super Mario 3D World in my opinion.
and sadly I’m too lazy to list other examples XD sorry
The Wii u has the better controller.
Nah, GC FTW
Reminds me of Xbox 360 controller. Xbox 360 (even though it’s hated) has a badass controller.
How about some more games for the 3DS then Reggie ?
Give the 3DS a rest. The Wii U also needs more attention.
Nintendo has a lot Japanese games to bring to the west for the 3ds.
Well, it’ll probably be longer than how long AMD feels the PS4 and Xbox One to last (They predict a 6 – 8 Year life span of those two consoles)
There isn’t really a lot of logic to realize a do over is not needed. The console is set to create graphics and experiences pleasing to those who play it. I have shown my Wii U to quite a few people for their first time, and they all have left with a desire to own one. The only thing that matters is the cost of porting games in comparison with the money the developers can make. Because of the nature of the other systems, the Wii U may not get a lot of 3rd party for another year but the console is already set to sell at least in the range of N64. It is currently selling at a respectful pace compared to the other consoles, and it will continue to compete if not outperform expectations with future releases.
Splatoon does look really promising, the toad game is more a spin-off (non AAA offering, same for clay Kirby, yoshi yarn. The only mentioned AAA first party at e3 WAS LoZ. Splatoon doesn’t look AAA.
Metroid(a proper one) is considered AAA, same with Mario, MK8 is one, and Smash is another. When you really think about it, Nintendo has only so many AAA console titles. They need their OWN metal gears, resident evils, red dead redemptions, gta’s, max paynes, and so on to accompany the Mario’s n junk, just my opinion. Not hating, I welcomed everything showed at e3, just I wouldved welcomed the other stuff mentioned a little more. I’ve owned most Nintendo consoles, except the N64.
Don’t really care about ‘AAA’. Just care about good games. There’s a lot of terrible ‘AAA’ games these days.
That’s why I only mentioned good AAA games, all the ones I dropped ARE execellent games. Nowhere did I write Watchdogs(though wii u is getting it) or titanfall or assasins creed 579, call of doody 987 and so on. I want fun games, I don’t care if they are AAA or not, but good AAA titles are welcomed.
Yeah, only from 3rd party trashes like Ubisoft and EA. Nintendo is proven to be GOD when it comes to first parties.
Sorry Stapler… but you do realize that Splatoon is Nintendo’s new IP and a lot people have been playing it at Nintendo’s E3 booth as well as Super Smash Bros. for both the U and 3DS. Your comment on Splatoon not being AAA is double standards. Give this new IP a chance for once. It’s truly a fun third person team shooter with unique challenges and game play control schematics.
The Wii U can get better if it gets more games, but you guys have to understand the Wii U is different than the 3DS. Most people who want their Nintendo games will stick with that and use a different console for all of the games that aren’t on Wii U. I can see these 2015 games giving a great boost to the console, but unless Wii U gets proper third party support, I don’t think people are going to buy it just yet. Like, if somebody owns a 3DS and they buy Nintendo games, but they also want to be able to play the latest AAA third party game, they are probably going to end up going after that console instead. Now let’s look at Call of Duty for example. It sells millions every year. Now let me use my cousin as an example. This dude freaking LOVES Call of Duty. Gets every one of em each year. Now if Wii U was his only console and he’d just seen the new CoD announced for everything but the Wii U, I’m pretty sure he’s not gonna like that very much. And judging by the sales of these games, I’d say many people view it the same way he would. If they already have a 3DS, they aren’t going to sacrifice the games they like to play only to get access to even more Nintendo games. Now what I’d say would really get the Wii U selling would be to have this kind of support. Not getting left behind. People should be able to play big name games and Nintendo games all on the same platform. And if they can’t do that, they’re just going to stick with the 3DS or skip Nintendo entirely.
The new call of duty is announced for wii u :)
Gamecube was my favorite console still. The wii U is 3rd after N64 than Wii last. My favorite games on GC were Melee, Pikmin 1&2, Sunshine, RE4, True Crime Streets of LA. Mario Galaxy 1&2 still are my favorite on Wii. Brawl was the best Smash Bros. to me. Although Wii U has good games now, none of the games on Wii U are better than N64 or Gamecube…..yet. I lied Tropical Freeze is the best 2D Donkey Kong even beating SNES. Mario Kart 8 beats Mario Kart Wii and Double Dash to me. Pikmin 2 has not been dethroned for best Pikmin game yet though even though Pikmin 3 is very very good. I like Pro controller better than Gamecube but it wasn’t an easy decision. This is just my opinion.
I like your way of thinking. Although I haven’t played Pikmin 3 yet(my friend has it), number 2 was really fun. Also I’m hoping the next Metroid surpasses Prime 1(seems like a longshot but we’ll see). Hugs!
Some day I’m going to buy a Wii U for my niece. I’ve bought her (and helped encourage my mom to) get her a Gamecube, DS Lite and a Wii. I hope the Wii U price drops lower eventually. Only thing that sucks is that there’s no HDTV to hook the Wii U up for her. But yeah, the Wii U is a great console. It just needs more good games like Mario Kart 8.

Check out these mario and sonic t-shirts! Please buy them!! :)
They are even more detailed than before and much more elaborate!
If you check them out then I will be forever grateful!
Of course it does, Reggie.
You’ll never wear something out that you don’t use.
we’ll see about that in a couple of years.
I’m looking forward to the games announced. But man, that treehouse staff sure couldn’t sell anything. Project robot(which is a dumb idea IMO) was really dull, those dudes did not look the least bit excited to be playing that.
They should’ve just got some random(level headed) fan, yanked him off the showroom floor, take a small questionnaire/test(just to assure he/she would be stable and not ridicule the company) and had said individual play the games. Shoot, should’ved just got me, I would’ve sold the shit out of those games, no acting, no forced laughter, genuine excitement! Wouldn’t even have to pay me, first to play(of general public) honors would have sufficed! That, and on a personal note, maybe kick a conversation or two with that Sam girl, at least she kept in interesting, for me at least! :)
Pretty sure Wii U’s future is reassured to be better than we once thought last year. People need to understand that every new console birth always starts slow and can only go up. There are times when launches are specially great like N64 and Super Nintendo days.
Gotta give the consoles a chance and companies like Nintendo more faith than you give. Unlike Microsoft, Sony and 3rd parties lying in every step of the way to cheaply sell a barely upgraded products for quick, easy profits from dimwits only drooling for graphics on screen, Nintendo keeps the tradition alive in a way it should be handled instead of rushing into the future by making gimped PCs in black box and shoving DRM and BS DLCs up people’s asses.
Oh god I love the GameCube I have a lot of games in it 125+ games, and you know what it has lots of ea games in it.
:s I find Super Mario Galaxy boring. :s
Lol

The Gamecube and Wii U are both underrated, and seems to be sharing the same fate. Nintendo will not let history happen again, afterall the Gamecube has 3 other competitors back then compared to now.
AAA titles don’t mean anything if it’s all eye candy and less gameplay value. They hype it so much to fool gamers into buying unfinished titles, then sell you DLCs which they could have included on your purchase to make suckers of you.
The Wii U is here to stay for another 4-6 years even if they roll out the next console in 2018.
Its sort of dumb for people to think Nintendo should drop the Wii U. If it took Nintendo over a year for Toad’s Treasure Tracker to be unveiled for the Wii U and Pikmin 3 to debut don’t these dumb journalist know Nintendo would have to redesign the games coming out to delay it until 2016? That’s dumb. So the next generation hardware more powerful than PS4 would sell worse than Wii U becaus no games. And besides some of you wouldn’t buy the next gen hardware anyway because you are already waiting and hoping the Wii U price would drop.
I really hope High Command has games coming out in a regular time Schedule from now on…
We’ll have to wait until next year I think looking at how many games are already announced for then. This year… Not so much, there is actually nothing I care for… The toad games in Super Mario 3D world felt slow and I didn’t like them enough to buy a full game of it and I don’t like smash Bros… So what’s next for me?
Well I liked most games they showed so no issues for me…
And there will probably be a few new games later this year that will be announced on Nintendo Directs…
this is a really good thing to hear, dropping the Wii U would be like giving up, and Nintendo are not ones to give up
they didn’t with the Gamecube, they didn’t with the Virtual Boy, they won’t with the Wii U
This should go without saying but the “Wii U is doomed!” people just won’t shut the hell up. Oh well. Not my problem.
if they hold on a little longer I have a feeling that nintendo and the WiiU will have a big comeback very soon. I personalky own a WiiU and a PS4, but the PS annoys me more and more, cause there are no good games coming and e3 showed that there is nothin coming this and next year. I also have some ps-fanboy-friends who are gettin more and more frustrated with it.
The thing is, a lot of people say that Nintendo is behind on console power, but if Wii U lasts the usual 6 years and ends in 2018 and the PS4 and Xbox One lasts the billed 10 years and ends in 2023, then that allows Nintendo to reveal a console that is more powerful than PS4 and Xbox One that will end in 2024, so by that point, the console power of all three will be similar, so I wouldn’t worry about Nintendo’s lack of power…:) Sorry about the long comment……………
Seeing how awesome the new Smash Bros was, I think the Wii U can definitely make a nice come back. Sure, it’s going to be on the 3DS, and yes, the Wii U has a super late start on good content, but the point is that IT’S STILL COMING. No one’s even worried about the 3DS, they have too much good stuff in my opinion, and should share that with the Wii U. I think the big N is skiing their own thing and doing a good job on that. I remember reading an article about how couch co-op is dead nowadays… The Wii U makes couch co-op possible, and even better! To me that kind of fun can’t be replaced by pretty graphics and a 10 hour campaign. Respect Nintendo for who they are; oddballs who don’t follow the crowd
