Producer Hisashi Nogami has revealed that Nintendo considered using existing characters for Splatoon. The concept behind the forthcoming third-person shooter could have been built around an established franchise, but the firm ultimately decided that new material was more suitable for the game. Nintendo recently confirmed that Splatoon will contain a one-on-one multiplayer mode that can be played offline.
“First we started with the ability to shoot ink but then we added the ability to swim really fast through it, and as we kept adding more abilities to what the player was able to do, there was this kind of moment where we all realized, Oh yeah, this would work really well with squids,” said Nogami.
“Making them squids, it made a lot of the actions easy to explain and also made it really fun, and it was also this idea where all the actions we wanted to include in the game could be built around the idea of squids to get them all in there.
“You can see all our existing IP on this Smash Bros. poster right here [there was a Smash Bros. poster in the interview room]. When we had a really good long think about, would one of those fit it? Or should this new squid idea be the way to go? we realized squids were definitely the only thing we could go with. If the Wii Fit Trainer would have been the perfect character for this game, we would have gone with the Wii Fit Trainer [laughs].”
This makes me want a Splatoon Assist trophy in Smash 4.

Someone is surprise by this? It is well known that when it comes to creating new experiences, Nintendo has the tendency, for not calling it rule, to see if they can use one of his old IPs (Mario, do not argue with my, if they could, they would use Mario) to fill the bill.
It would’ve been the exact same gameplay if it was mario but people would complain about the game because it’s not a new ip. Replace mario with a bunch of dumbass little girls and suddenly splatoon is amazing.
I agree with everything up until “amazing.” The game seems bland. I like that gameplay is the focus, but I really don’t like the Nickelodeon art style. The characters look like the ones from “Rocket Power.”
Yes I hope to see more interesting levels and maybe a slightly different style…tbh I was hopeing that nintendo would create an ip with more realistic visuals than what they have done with this or at least the characters to attract an even wider audiance than what nintendo mostly has right now. tbh I have no problem with how nintendo games look but some people are blinded by visuals to some extent and will never experience those games (in my opinion) if they dont get attracted over by something they already like.

Reeeeeaaally digging the character design. I’m glad they approached this the way they did, letting this IP grow it’s own identity instead of attempting to piggyback on the popularity of any of their other icons.

I was thinking earlier that it would have been cool if this game switched the squid characters with cell shaded mario characters and called it mario paintball. The premise being they got stuck in a painting, and could turn into paint. That way they could use the established mechanics but throw in mario items like stars, mushrooms, shells, etc. I’m ok with what they got though. It’s good that Nintendo’s got a new IP.

I sent it to them hoping they would use it and called it mario paintball fps but they took out mario and fps and put third person and said it was their idea, bs if u look at all my posts ever alba and sickr can even say i have stated this idea on here way before nintendo came out with this. Glad they went this direction, mainly because the demand for new IPs from the company has been strong. Hopefully it leaves more of an impact being for a console, as both Pushmo and Dillon tend to be forgotten in that conversation.

Playstation has both third parties and the best first parties, like Infamous, God of War, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Jak and Daxter, Killzone, Little Big Planet, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Sly, Wipeout, etc.

I think these characters could be pretty fun for Smash Bros. as playable. You could ink people, and/or the ground to hide or move around in. Smash moves could use other weapons and such. I wouldn’t mind that.
I hope they have a name already. Who knows maybe they’ll include them in the next iteration of Smash Bros.
