Princess Zelda Is Actually Queen Zelda In Hyrule Warriors And Controls An Entire Army

As Hyrule Warriors is a spin-off from the Zelda franchise, Dynasty Warriors publisher Tecmo Koei is able to freely change or mould parts of the universe without upsetting the canon or timeline. So it’s with some surprise that Princess Zelda is no longer bearing the “princess” royalty tag, rather she’s Hyrule’s Queen with a large army at her fingertips.

In a recent interview with MMGN, Tecmo Koei producers Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayashi, along with Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma spoke on the heroine’s character and her elevation up the royal ladder. Queen Zelda’s relationship with Link, in particular, changes as players progress through the story.

Hayashi: “In Hyrule Warriors Princess Zelda is actually Queen Zelda. She has an army, as a Queen would, and Link is a trainee, but as the story unfolds the relationship between the two greatly changes.”

Aonuma: “With regard to Princess Zelda and her position in each story, we always position her where it’s best suited for that story or theme. We always try to achieve her best position within the story with each game or iteration. Just because she’s one way in one game, it doesn’t mean she’ll be the same way in the next game. We definitely change how Zelda is used and position her where it’s best for the experience. That’s as Queen and one of the playable characters in Hyrule Warriors.”

It’s interesting to note that the Japanese version of A Link Between Worlds also mentioned Zelda becoming Queen, but was scrapped within western localizations. With Zelda no longer confined as the princess in the castle, could we be looking at a larger role for her in future Zelda titles? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below. You can see her latest character trailer for Hyrule Warriors, here.

Thanks, Eric

    1. There doesn’t need to be a Queen AND a King. A Monarchy can have one or the other, as well as both, but it isn’t always both. It may start with a King and Queen but one might die or be killed, leaving just the Queen or King, and usually their children will fill the role after the Queen’s/King’s time as come. Even if they don’t have kids, they would commonly marry cousins or other relatives to keep the blood line “pure”

We’ve also never seen the Queen of Hyrule before, only the King and Princess Zelda. So it would be logical to think that the King died and now Zelda has stepped up to rule as Queen, being the rightful heir to the throne.

There isn’t even a trace of something that could be called a logical thought in anything you just wrote…

        1. C’mon a guy with a mask fetish mask out with link and produces a magical child with a horse as a face that can appear at your side in a whim

  1. Zelda does not always have to be a princess. She is who ever she is incarnated to be. She wasn’t a princess in Skyward Sword.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

He means no Hyrule period. Hyrule is the name of the kingdom, not the land itself. If there was a Hyrule prior to them being lifted into the air, I think there would have been SOME kind of mention of it’s name instead of just being called the “Land Beneath the Clouds.”

  2. I doubt we could expect her to be queen in newer titles, the team that’s making Hyrule Warriors has some freedom with the characters, that’s all.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

As Sakurai said, he always puts Zelda in a position that makes sense for the game. So if he ever decides that Zelda’s best position in a future Zelda game is to be the Queen of Hyrule, he will make her be the Queen of Hyrule for that Zelda game.

  3. What’s the difference between queen and princess? Also, what are the qualifications of becoming a princess? It seems like Nintendo females just slap on crowns and declare themselves rulers. XD

              1. Not as stupid as you calling yourself a Nintendo Commander if you don’t even have a Wii U LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Are you stupid or just blind? Hollow just told you he does own a Wii U. Hell! I can even confirm he has one. A number of others on this site can also confirm he owns a Wii U.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Why are you thanking him? He’s an idiot that is assuming Quadraxis still doesn’t own a Wii U when a number of us on this site can tell you & the anonymidiot that he does own a Wii U now. In fact, he’s owned one for the past few weeks.

    1. Princesses are more marketable, queens are normally evil. If anything, Zelda is one princess that get things done though, and she’s had a father King in some games.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

A father who has been pretty much useless except for in WW when he owned Ganondorf…

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

xD We can thank Ganondorf with his pride & ego for getting pawned by the King of Hyrule. He always, ALWAYS gets cocky & blinded by pride in the final showdown with Link. Pride cometh before a fall!

          1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

I think evil Lords know they can win at anytime they want, I think they want a challenge though which is why I believe they keep letting the “heroes” go…

              1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

They can win at anytime, just take Ghirahim, he could have killed Link whenever he wanted to but let him live because he foudn him “amusing”…

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Exactly what I mean. His pride made him think he could eliminate Link at any time, so when the time came to finally do just that, he couldn’t because Link was just too powerful at that point.

Demise made the same mistake with Link. He wasn’t at full power but he believed the power he had at that moment was more than enough to take down a mere mortal, so he left the portal to where he was going open so Link could follow after him. Sure a small part of them wants to have some kind of a challenge but that’s all they expect to get from their enemy. They never think that maybe letting them get stronger will lead to them not only being a challenge for them but also be the death of them.

                  1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Yes but I’m only talking about at that moment wif they iddn’t have their arrogance…

                    A “what if?” scenario…

    2. Queens actually have power over the land unlike a princess and you become loyalty by blood line, so they are just normal people with crowns on their heads

  4. She’s a Queen already without Link? That cheating bitch!!! Just kidding but now we need Link X Samus Aran. Imagine Link getting warped to the future or in a distant galaxy and he must team up with Samus.

                1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

                  Indeed…

Our Lords suffer from some ignorance though…

                  I suffer from somethng…

  5. Finally… she’s finally a Queen instead of a Princess just because -insert why her father is still alive meaning she can keep the title here –

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Apperantely he doesn’t want to and he seems to ignore me for some reason, oh well…

  6. Here parents must’ve died and she is left by herself without a husband, so she must be queen. It would feel weird if someone other than link got in that dress.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I would love it if she is supposed to marry someone of noble blood but falls in love with Link, a lowly soldier, instead, as the story progresses, pushing the guy of noble blood to get jealous & become a villain for a later chapter. I loved this little side plot from The Last Story. In fact, I always enjoy a side plot like this.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Oh my god! You’re right! I didn’t even notice since there has been other stories with a similar scenario. lol

      1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

You know, with the villain looking like Ganondorf, the majority of TLS’s plot could have been the plot in a future Zelda title and it would’ve been awesome :o

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Hell yes it would have. The plot twist that one of the friends Link made throughout his journey was using him to reach their own sinister goals for revenge & power would have also been a nice twist for the final boss of the game.

  7. Sony Emperor Xperia

Warriors Orochi 2,on Playstation 4 looks way better then this Xbox360 Graphics looking game

    1. When looking at PS3/4 differences, its not that much. So stop kissing graphics ass saying its the pinnacle importance of gaming. Its sad to hear drones like you bash and praise games over visuals and not the core aspect of it.

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Give i tup already you Nazi ape, I already knew long ago…

      Aeolus = Sony Emperor Xperia

  8. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Yes. What did happen? Did silvershadowfly nuke Aeolus & Xperia’s comments or something?

  9. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I wonder if we’ll get a backstory as to why Zelda is the Queen of Hyrule in this game. I hope we get one.

    1. Brawl listed Zelda as being the Queen of Hyrule, and Nintendo in one of their magazines said that the coronation was between tp and brawl. In Twilight Princess, she was going to be Queen within the days that the Twili invaded.

      1. Seems so
“In the Super Smash Bros. Brawl manual, Zelda is referred to as a queen, even though she is commonly referred to as “princess”. This is because her Brawl appearance is based on her appearance from Twilight Princess, who is queen de-facto, only not officially bearing the title due to her official coronation being prevented by the events of the game.”

“It’s interesting to note that the Japanese version of A Link Between Worlds also mentioned Zelda becoming Queen, but was scrapped within western localizations.”
Ugh! Who’s the dumbass that told them to scrap it from the western localizations!? More importantly, why was it scrapped in the first place?

  12. Am I the only one who remembers Zelda holding the title of queen in Twilight Princess? This isn’t anything new, guys.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I don’t recall the game outright saying she was the Queen of Hyrule, though. Which region is your copy of the game?

      1. She might as well have been, we never see her parents and she’s the only one in power that we know of

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

But we don’t know anything about her parents. They could be off in another kingdom trying to quell a conflict with a neighboring kingdom. Or maybe they are on a vacation. Kings & queens don’t just stay in their kingdoms their entire life, after all. Even they are allowed a chance to rest & get away from everything.

  13. this game does look so much better than what it did when announced. i wish this were coming out like in august though

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Agreed. Of course, I thought it looked fine even when first shown off, to be honest. I’m sure this game will look even better once we can actually play it on our Wii U, though. Videos of video games on the internet don’t look nearly as good as they do when you actually play the game on the console. Just look at the youtube videos of Mario Kart 8 people have been posting on there using Mario Kart TV. They don’t look nearly as good as they did on the Wii U.

  17. I actually prefer the title “Queen” for Zelda. She is so sophisticated and strong willed. She is very “queen-like.”

“Princess” is a more naive title.

  18. okey Zelda becoming queen is the coolest thing that happens to a character in Nintendo, I really hope Zelda will be a Queen, she is strong and helpful to Link. She is the perfect candidate for this, a Queen is more mature an elegant, and it will make her even a better character.

Being a perpetual princess is not good, just look at Nintendo’s most famous whore, I mean character…
