This week’s Media Create sales charts are now in from Japan. As expected Yokai Watch 2 was the game that Japanese consumers were most excited about, and it shows, as the game sold a staggering 1.3 million units in its opening week. Thanks to Yokai Watch 2 the Nintendo 3DS sold 61.956 units, whereas the previous week it only sold 27.338. Wii U sales seem to be on a downward trend with the console only managing to sell 8.658 this week. Here’s the Japanese software and hardware charts.

mario kart 8’s steam is over way too soon. nintendo lit up a firecracker and that was a bout it. what’s next, hyrule warriors is gonna save the wii u? smash bros?….. umm…. mario kart is nintendo’s best selling franchise in the modern days, and it didn’t do much. smash bros doesn’t even reach half of what mario kart sells. how will smash bros, a series that sells much less than mario kart, save wii u, when mario kart could not. wii u has failed miserably, and nintendo will release a new console in 1 year at most. but wii u will go down as the worst console of all time.
MK8 got the Wii U to outsell Xbone. Wii U has been No. 2 best selling console at least 2 or 3 times. No Wii U game did that before. But you rather play dumb like that didn’t happen. Since Wii U relies on games, all Nintendo needs is a maintain of AAA every 2.5 months then you’ll be gone from here.

Mk was way more hyped. The proof is in the nintendo forums and websites.
Mario Kart isn’t as big in Japan like Monster Hunter, Pokemon and Yokai Watch 2, but it’s still done amazing. Still managing to stay in the top 10 even a month after. Yokai Watch 2 is just a hugely popular franchise in Japan and they go nuts over it. MK8 was fantastic so yeah Hype was great.

Mainly down to MK8 I believe because first it was up at the top on the list, then went down a few but the following weeks it picked up again.

The difference is that wii u already did well in holydays and did great numbers, Sony never did such numbers, so it never took off.

The main issue with the stagnant console sales isn’t just due to phones/tablets, but also the fact that the game selection just isn’t there yet. No Smash or Zelda for Wii U, no Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts for PS4, etc. Kotaku also had an article that showed what reasons the Japanese are using for not buying a PS4 and many of them came down to “not enough games” and “why buy it over a PS3 right now?”
I think North American and European sales for PS4 will be able to sustain the lack of sales in Japan until more games are released there, though. With Nintendo they just need to try to stave off the bleeding until Hyrule Warriors and then Smash Bros. are released, at the very least.
Obviously, give them a game they want, and the sales spike. Look at the 3ds.
Believe it or not, Zelda isnt a huge seller in Japan.

Overall better week for games in Japan. And Yokai Watch 2, wow. Those week one sales are pretty amazing. In one week the game outsold the LTD sales of the first game. Good stuff.
3DS and Vita got a nice bump. Wii U and PS4… well, we know this is Japan. Let’s hope they do better in the future with more consistent good releases.

I still don’t understand why PS4 doesn’t need games to sell in UK and US but needs games to sell in Japan. Yet Vita needs games in US and UK to sell but doesn’t need games to sell in Japan. Wii U just needs games to sell hardware anywhere. Only thing I see in Japan is Wii U is like 64% handheld and is no. 3 best seller in Japan. Yet I wonder if the GamePad didn’t depend on the tiny box connected to the TV then would it then not need games to sell.

Here now starting to get little more support than before but its gonna take a shitton more than that for Sony to pull Vita out of its grave that its heading to. Before now, all Vita has was tons of gimped PS3 ports and expensive ass memory cards which is a major turn off for buyers. Like why not stick with SDs? They’re like $25 cheaper than Vita counterparts with the same storage. What was Sony even thinking doing that?
Not really. It had some pretty sweet games around launch even, and more kept coming. People just seemed to ignore it.
Plus, it’s started picking up sales intensively lately, so if things keep improving and games keep coming, it might not take Sony too much. Only if Sony actually does deliver and keep supporting the Vita, that is. If they don’t, others won’t either. Things like that won’t happen on their own after all, so Sony’s support has to be there at all times.
But I totally agree with you on the memory card issue. It was a really stupid thing to do and one of the big things people were put off by. Things would have went much better for the Vita if it wasn’t for those memory cards, really.

I’m 50/50 on if Smash Bros. for Wii U is going to do anything since 3DS will get the same characters and such. The only advatage Smash Bros. Wii U has better are more comfortable controllers. They both are taking Amiibos. I think the Wii U version should be released first and like 8 months ahead. I wish 3DS just got Melee or Brawl to avoid confliction. It still would have sold well it just wouldn’t affect Wii U version of Smash Bros. I’m going to buy both versions.
I agree that it will cripple Wii U sales, but the sales left should still be enough to put a dent in Sony’s console lead. Personally, I’m going to pass on the Amiibos, but I’ll be spending a ton of time online to rise up the rankings. Now that sounds like a lot of fun! They just need to clean up the lag and try to block others from cheating..the latter is the tough part

The only thing about that is that it would likely still be a lot of work for the team that would be doing the game so they may as well just make it completely unique. Imagine a Smash game (No story mode) that has completely different characters and stages. The important fighters will still be there of course, but they use it at a testing ground for more obscure fighters. All of them would be newcomers except for the original 12 and a few other fan favorites. That would be pretty awesome and then the fighters that were the most liked would make it into the next home console Smash Bros

FIFA, I get its the world’s most popular sport but what are the chances that the Chinese will buy a possibly expensive Xbox One just for that game? Slim. Indies? Everyone knows Wii U and PS has better indie support so good luck with Xbox and its BS Live premium with DRM that’ll block its purchase from being used after Live expires. Kingdom Hearts 3? PS is the best home for KH3 while its making its first debut on Xbox which there’s no fanbase there at all compare to Nintendo that already established that fanbase too. Final Fantasy? lego games went the route of CoD after LEGO batman. Fifa is only interesting if you like soccer, and even then it’s like madden; cut-and-paste code with a few surface things changed, for the most part.

Final Fantasy sucked ass after 8, except for 13. Say what you will, but 13 was pretty fun, at least in my opinion. Different was what made it fun.
Final Fantasy 7 was great for its time, but is now the subject of too many nostalgiatards for it to even be remotely worth playing.

This happens all the time, the previous week show high sales then the next it goes down. At least based on previous week comparison, the Wii U still outsells the PS4 by around 1500 units this week and about 2000 last week.
I’m not surprised about the Vita outselling the Wii U since it had a price drop, it’s still cheaper than the Wii U and Japan gamers prefer handheld consoles. But compared to the 3DS sales, no contest at all.
Where’s the US sales? THOSE are the ones we have to see. US sales are the one that really determines how well it’s doing. And I must know how many units Wii U has been sold now. I have to know! D:
