NPD: Mario Kart 8 Sells 885,000 Units In US in First Five Weeks, Wii U Sales Were Up 233 Percent

After firing out of the gate at the end of May, Mario Kart 8 had an even stronger second lap. The game was the top-selling physical software SKU in the U.S. in June, and sold more than 470,000 physical and digital units. This brings its lifetime total to more than 885,000 units in the U.S. alone. Mario Kart 8 is also driving new momentum for the Wii U platform and its library of great titles, which includes an industry-best 15 games with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher. Sales of hardware and software in June 2014 were up 233 percent and 373 percent, respectively, over June 2013. For the first half of the year, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by 48 percent and 129 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.

“These results reinforce the power of the Mario Kart franchise and speak to a bright future for the Wii U platform,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “History has shown that Mario Kart games tend to have an extremely long tail. We fully expect Mario Kart 8 to continue to drive momentum for our hardware and software business through the holidays and into the foreseeable future.”

Nintendo 3DS also had a strong month: Hardware sales in June increased by more than 55 percent over sales in May, and Tomodachi Life sold more than 175,000 combined physical and digital units after launching on June 6.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2014, Wii U has a great lineup of upcoming games and amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, that will help Nintendo build on its Mario Kart 8 momentum. Notable titles on the way include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). Likewise, three of the most anticipated games of the year are coming exclusively to Nintendo 3DS in 2014: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Oct. 3) and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).

    1. It’s weird cuz by the time i get on the site they barley post any news and hardley anyone is on… likely different time zones (only 4:00pm here)

Also, nice to see WiiU picking up. :D

  1. Wohoo! Now work on the follow up to sustain sales…even if its not a new game. DLC of battle arenas will do….

  2. Yay for percentages and no actually sales numbers >.> like 233% looks like a nice number but 233% of a low number is less impressive.

And I dont just want to seem like a nintendo hater, the big 3 all do this >.> stupid as f***

    1. Of course numbers mean a lot! Like, how Nintendo said they have 200 companies working on games for the Wii U. Some of them being tiny, incompetent indie games like The Letter and Internal Invasion… … what a time to be alive.

Yet are the one giving the “attention whore” the attention. What logic are you using? Butthurt? Or retardation?

            1. Manrangan: I’m a smartass who can’t understand what autistic is besides being the same as retarded. Okay, I’m gonna use clever big words I don’t know to sound smart in unecessary internet debates.

              1. >.< Yep. He clearly doesn't know that autistic people learn slower than others, so they can be rather smart people over time.

Looks like someone is getting worked up over nothing when there was a much more peaceful solution.

          1. That sounds really good and will only get better over time once more games arrive. Thanks for doing the math for us lazier people. XP

          2. VGChartz is based on speculations, not official numbers, though.
Anyone who uses VGChartz as a source instantly loses credibility.

Sorry, but your favorite foreign pornstar is dead, maybe you can did up his/her grave and do what you want. You can ask around where he/she is buried, I would start there.

        2. Nearly one million… MK8 helped a ton, and I think this might be the first Nintendo console generation where Smash will sell more consoles than Mario Kart!

        3. I’m always confused when percentages goes beyond 100. I always thought 100% was the maximum of percentage? So confusing.

        5. I hate when some of these thing use percentages & don’t even give us actual numbers. Do they even keep track of sales numbers in the United States? For fuck sakes! Now the trolls & haters are still going to run their biased mouths.
