      1. Mario 64 is the greatest game of all time. It’s nice to see they placed Shenmue at 7, most lists have shenmue very low on a list or don’t even mention it at all. That being said, Shenmue should be in the top 3.

    1. The last of us was an amazing, way better than most on this list, it wouldnt say it deserves best game but it definitely deserves to be in the top 8

      1. So in translation: its merely an interactive movie just like 80% of 3rd party trash with recycled gameplay and material aimed for quick profit from fools.

        1. No, its basically not an interactive movie. Its a game with a great story, but has the worse gameplay mechanics and broken-ass stealth mechanics I’ve ever seen, could sneak through an entire level without getting caught like a breeze first try, and not that’s not me being good, because I always get caught several times before finishing an entire level undetected through the process of trial and error. In there I have to deliberately try to get detected to get detected.
And the multiplayer, I thought that was horrible as well, Uncharted’s was better than this.
So yeah it doesn’t deserve a number 1 on the list.

      2. Nintendo Commander Mar-Vell

It doesn’t have a great story. Unless you’re like most gamers and have no idea what a great story is. Last of Us story is garbage. Similar to Walking Dead in that way. Both are seen as great by mindless zombies. Brainless zombies are the only ones who like those stories. Which is why they’re so popular. ;)

    1. Just wondering, if you hate Nintendo then why bother coming here to waste moments of your life you could be doing something else?

  1. Last of Us the best *game*? I hear people praise its story all the time, but best game? I don’t know.

    WoW #3?

Pokemon Red #29? Link to the past #35?

    Stupid list lol

    1. WHAT!!!!!! NO STARFOX???? NO DONKEY KONG COUNTRY OR DONKEY KONG 64???? NO BURNING RANGERS???? NO METROID NES??? NO PANZER DRAGOON SAGA??? NO PERSONA 4???? NO UNREAL TOURNAMENT???? NO SUPER MARIO 3D WORLD???? NO DOUBLE DRAGON???? NO MORTAL KOMBAT???? AND LAST OF US RANKED HIGHER THAN THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: OCARINA OF TIME???? ROTFLMAO….but this is a magazine that mainly does movies so I don’t take it seriously anyway

    1. I honestly think it;s pretty good but seeing the last of us even in the top 25 makes it irrelevant to me. skyward sword destroys the list too.

      1. The Last of Us makes the list because it’s still fresh in people’s minds. A few years ago when these “All-Time” lists kept popping up, everyone had Skyrim as the #1 and now it’s not even in the top ten on this list. OoT is consistently in the top 5 of pretty much all lists which is a testament to just how incredible that game is. It’s funny to see people get so bent out of shape over something like this.

  2. wat

Really? People consider The Last of Us that good? Its a good game, I admit, but really, best game of all time? REALLY?!

  3. Not sure I agree with the Last of Us. I did really like the game though. Just not so sure what is so special about it to put it at the top. I have definitely played games with just as good of stories. I have played games that do handle better although this one is good in that department. And the game, even on the hardest, was not really hard. And I would not say there was a ton of gameplay either.

The only issue I have with the story is I knew the ending that was coming early on. And I had seen these types of ideas before. Does not ruin the story or take away from it but does not help it stand out either.

  4. I felt like the Last of Us was more a movie than a game… which is really just a shame. I think that destroy’s the medium video games are made for.

    1. This raises a good question about the treatment of video games as an artistic medium. There seems to be a misconception among the more inspired developers that artistic expression in a video game means a movie with gameplay in between (looking at you, Quantic Dream). Many times have we seen art inserted into a video game, but the big, million-dollar trick is actually to MAKE THE VIDEO GAME ITSELF ART! Sometimes I wonder if Roger Ebert was right because, within recollection, I have never ONCE seen this done with a video game, or at least not in the overt. I guess there’s something vaguely, broadly artistic about Journey, but without further insight on it’s meaning from it’s creator(s), it could be argued that it’s just an atmospheric, soothing experience (similar to Ebert’s criticism of Flower), and I wouldn’t have much of a counter argument for that.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually loved the Last of Us, and Journey, but the medium could really use someone who’s figured out how to create expression in a way ONLY a video game can provide, in the same way Alan Moore (and apparently, no one else) has figured out that comics are supposed to be jam-packed with information in their panels, lest they become movies that don’t move or make noise, or books that do all of the visual imagination for you.

  5. What a god awful list. Completely wrong for a large number of reasons, but the worst being GoldenEye at 6. Sure it was great when it first came out, but compared to modern FPS games it is borderline unplayable.

    1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

This list is a pretty good balance of modern games and retro. GoldenEye was iconic and for a good reason. That’s why.

Movie critics in general list Citizen Kane as the greatest movie of all time. Has it been outclassed by other films, logistically speaking? Sure, but for its time it was amazing.

    2. You are a fucking retard. Congrats for being my first reply on the internet. This comment is the worst I have ever seen. Go kill yourself. Comparing a game that redefined the genre 10 years ago to a games today that utilize infintely superior technology. Go back to your trailer you fucking dillweed.

  6. This list would be more accurately titled “100 most innovative games of all time.”

not surprised to see so many LoZ titles on the list – surprised by their order though.

also, do they really think Pokemon red/blue/yellow are better than the rest of the series or are they giving credence to what a phenomenon Pokemon became?

i need to see criteria for this list.

  7. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Sonyan bribed magazine more like it…

The last of us, what a joke, this is proof that the majority of the western world only cares about nonsense emotions and stories more than creativity, fun and gameplay…

I bet they’ll choose the upcoming movie about this game in the future when infact is really just a movie about an already game movie that this game is…

    1. i think chooseing from alist of every game is like chooseing from a list from all the different kinds of art in the world..or its getting like that.

      1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Yes but choosing TLOS as the best game of all time points to the ignorance gamers have today…

  8. Nintendo is my Blood

I can agree with some of the list but The Last of Us beating OoT? AKA the greatest game of all time? And if we are going to put the most popular games of all time whether overrated or not, where is Minecraft?

  9. What a terrible list. Any Metal Gear fan could tell you that Snake Eater is better than MGS. And Ocarina of Time so high at number 2? Really? I thought we’d outgrown that insistence by now. Metroid Prime and Super Metroid should also be higher.

  10. It depends what you’re judging the best game by. Are you going for the objective best game, regardless of when it was released? If so games like OoT, Goldeneye and Halo have no business being in the top 10 or even the top 50. Or are we talking about the most revolutionary/important games of all time, in which case those ones can stay and games such as The Last Of Us, GTA V etc. need to make way. This list tries to have it both ways and as such is totally worthless. I don’t want to hear about opinions or whatever. If these are their opinions, then they’re so far off the mark that their opinions are objectively awful.

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

Please, why would Obinna believe Jesus was black, he hates MLK, what makes you think he isn’t a self hating bastard

  11. Forget TLOU being number 1, why in the world is GTA V in the top 10? That game is way more overrated and boring than TLOU.
Also, this list just seems to list any game that got hyped and great reviews in a random order. Red Red Redemption at number 9? Lol.

  12. So a glitch ridden ugly looking outdated game like Pokemon Red and Blue beats Metroid Prime?

    Yeah I fucking quit.

    1. nostalgia fags man, you have to remember. Those games are awful now but i mean they were the best damn handheld game you could experience back in the day.

  13. Last of Us deserved to be the game of the year, but not the game of all time. It didn’t break any boundries, and it did not innovate at all. A whole generation of games borrowed ideas from Ocarina of Time. OoT set a new benchmark in 3d adventure games.

  14. Any list that includes Final fantasy VII as the all-time top 5, really does not deserve my respect. And… please… Last of Us and Shenmue???

  15. The Last of US is so overrated, my brother who is a hardcore gamer who beat and played through all three uncharted said the last of us is horrible when it comes to gameplay

  16. everyone has its every perspectives in likes, someone will agree with this list and a lot will not. But for me Doom deserves to be in top 10, hehe

  17. Stupid list. I mean how do you compare Final Fantasy X with Super Mario Bros? What exactly makes the latter one place higher than the first? Same goes with Tetris and Assasin’s Creed II, or anything on that list for that matter. The only way to do this fair is to split up genres and list the best games under each year. This list is a mess and doesn’t really say anything.

  18. This list? Ummm no. I am a Sonic fanboy and in no way is Sonic 1 better than Sonic 2 or 3. I also agree with other commenters that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night needs to be on the list…

    1. Depends. I liked 1 better. I think the abilities/controls got better with 2, but there’s something about the music and worlds in 1 that I still hold more dear. Maybe it’s because I grew up with it, who knows.

Either way, the list is still crap.

      1. I definitely know what you mean. I would agree that Sonic 1 has that nostalgia factor. I try to be objective when picking top games. It’s tricky either way. Not being able to beat Sonic 1 didn’t help, haha.

  19. I expected the list to be bad but…wow…

    FF7 at #4 but no FF6?

Why is FF10 on the list

Last of Us at #1? haha nope

    1. That’s what I was thinking. How can you not put ff VI or IV for that matter on the list?? This list is shit!!! Made by all under 25.

  20. I feel like the majority of people hating on this list haven’t even played The Last of Us, some have, but not even close to all. I haven’t played it yet either, but plan on picking up the remaster. Don’t criticise the position of games on a list if you haven’t played them enough to have an informed opinion.

    1. Not everyone here is a raving, Nintendo-only lunatic. For most gamers here, we play all systems and love a diverse library of games.

Even so, with all the systems I own, and all the games I’ve played… The Last of Us wouldn’t have even dented the top 10. I’m sorry, but the SNES alone holds more than 10 games I still think hold up better.

      1. I’m surprised we didn’t see Yoshi’s Island on the list. I am not a big Nintendo fan but that is an iconic Nintendo platformer that had some of the best in-game music of it’s time.

        1. man i think it deserves a place on the list, it’s a very fun platformer, the music is awesome, it has a pretty good challenge to it too (i think it’s quite a bit harder than super mario world) lmao it already excels in more categories than the overrated of us.i didn’t experience it when it first came out but it blew my mind that some things in a super nintendo game like the boards look like it was going in 3d, that must have been really cool if you played that when it first came out. oh…… another thing that it did better than the last of us, the last of us didn’t do a break through in graphics. Oh and the walking dead game has a better story than the last if us…….. OVERRATED AS FUCK it can’t even be the best in it’s only true strength.

      2. I cringe every time I see a comment from “Nintendo Commander Quadraxis” haha. Nintendo’s great, but not God.

I personally wish Super Metroid were higher on the list, but games (and art in general) are so subjective that every list is gonna be different.

  21. I look forward to when the Last of Us hype train grinds to a halt and people get some actual freakin’ perspective. Ocarina and FFVII as usual… what a joke.

    1. Umm, hit send a mite too early. This just feels like they went to Metacritic to get some pointers and haven’t actually played most of the games themselves. Uninspired and intentionally shying away from controversy. Empire should just stick to movies… that, they can get right every once in a while.

  22. That looks like just one persons opinion as opposed to a team. This is an awful list. Some of those games don’t deserve to be in the top 1000. The last of us is a great game, but should not have cracked the top 10.
It’s no wonder I have never heard of Empire magazine before now, they are garbage.

  23. EVERYONE, PLEASE READ!

THIS LIST WAS BASED ON READERS VOTING IN AND NOT THE ACTUAL MAGIZAINE PLACING THIS LIST WITH THEIR OWN THOUGHTS ON WHERE THE GAMES SHOULD BE.

PEOPLE VOTED IN THE LIST. THE REASON WHY THE LAST OF US MADE ONE BECAUSE THE GAME WAS RERELEASED ON PS4, SO THE TIMING IS CORRLATED TO THE LIST.

AND NO, THE LAST OF US DOES NOT SUCK, BUT IT DOESNT BELONG AS NUMBER 1

  24. My top 10 list:

10: TLOZ: Ocarina of Time (it is amazing and it innovated very much so into the adventure genre, but not my favorite game of all time, that’s for sure!)
9: Super Mario 3D World (my favorite mario game of all time; I love the levels in this game, they’re so innovative and so much fun to play alone or with friends!)
8: Garry’s Mod (You might not agree, but this “game” is amazing, you could argue that it’s not a “game” but a mod. But I say “f*ck it” and put it here, since it deserves it.)
7: Metroid Prime (It’s great, let’s leave it at that)
6: Crash Bandicoot 3 (I have a ton of fond memories for this game, and I recently played this game through, and realized how good it still was!)
5: TLOZ: Wind Waker (I finished WW HD, and realized how good it was, before I would have placed it under OOT.)
4: Any of the Rhythm Heaven games. (There are three games in the Rhythm Heaven series, but I can’t really pick a favorite out of them all…)
3: Civilization V (This game managed to steal 100 hours of my life without me realizing… It’s awesome…)
2: The Binding of Isaac (This game is like Zelda 1, but infinite.. And gorey… So good!)
    Honorable Mentions:
Bio shock (1 or Infinite), Red Dead Redemption, Shenmue, Terraria (don’t judge me lol, but I prefer Terraria to Minecraft 10/1), Osu!, Sonic Adventure 1 (Yes, I know, but I never played SA2, and I still like SA1 a lot),
Pikmin 3, AND TF2 (probably the best FPS in my opinion)
1: TLOZ: Majora’s Mask (I’ve played this game so much, and I love it every time I play it, this is my favorite game OF ALL TIIIIME!)

    1. Oops, forgot an honorable mention; Super Metroid! (The best 2D Metroid game IMO, but Fusion is a EXTREMELY close second!)

  25. And in 15 years, no one will give a rat’s ass about The Last of Us. Seriously, I just don’t get it. Bought it, beat it… it’s good, but not best game of all time good. And wtf is with Battlefront 2 being 88th??? Infuriating…

  26. Not a bad list to be honest, I’ve seen a lot worse. I’d agree with a lot of these, actually. I haven’t played it, but The Last of Us cannot be better than Arkham City, Shenmue, etc.

    1. The Last of Us can in NO FORM WHATSOEVER beat half these titles.
First off, no Pac-Man, Pong, Minecraft, Pokemon Black/White/X/Y/Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, ect. ect. Where is the proof in all of this? A personal list may contain this but in no way should some of these titles be on here.
      http://youtu.be/RL6hOVuCjdI

  27. The #1 spot in the ” Best games of all time” is permanently reserved for Super Mario Bros 3. No exceptions.

      1. I would play it! It it wasn’t over 75 bucks (or whatever the going price is for it).. I love JRPGs and the concept seems interesting, but if all my local places are charging ~15bucks more than a new game, it’s frankly not worth my money. I am going to buy Xenoblade Chronicles X, though.

I didn’t hear about Xenoblade Cheonicles until a few years after it was released. Somebody in marketing/advertising was doing a poor job, if you ask me.

    1. Yeah the game was amazing. I think that game deserves a spot. It would probably be in the top games i ever played.

  28. I’d like to point out that Super Smash Bros Brawl was represented on this list, but not Melee. Granted, it was pretty low on the list, but Brawl was literally made under the mindset that Melee being good competitively was a bad choice made in it’s creator’s efforts to make a fun party game. I tend to look down on the usage of popular opinion as a means of objectively measuring quality, but Melee’s competitive community is still being significantly supported twelve+ years after it’s release while Brawl’s competitive community, seven years after it’s release, is a scattered mess of either people who don’t know any better or people who are still trying, with futility, to make it as deeply competitive as Melee.

“There’s little room for combos, exciting matchplay, and it’s more like… who gets hit… less.”

    -PC Chris on Brawl

If Brawl is on the list, Melee deserves a much loftier spot on the list for being the party game that’s as good as a fighting game in it’s own way, such that it has no peers to contend with (even among it’s own series), such that it caused a once humble niche of a scene to EXPLODE in numbers and popularity.

    1. This is also an opinion list, but even then, you are right, but not for that reason. The fact that It was developed in such a short time and became a cult-classic among fans is incredible. I would rather had seen 64 on the list, because it was the first.

  29. sasori obi the kenpachi puppet master

where’s naruto shippuden ultimate ninja storm on the list. where’s battlefield 3? where black ops 2? why the heck is that dogcrap Call of Juarez on the list. what happen tekken tag tournament 2 or bravely default. this list is garbage because it naruto or one piece game on the list. at least batman arkham series are on the list.

    1. “where’s naruto shippuden ultimate ninja storm” sorry narutard there’s no space for the most boring franchise

        1. Broken Bond and Rise of a Ninja were 360 exclusives that were underrated in my opinion. They were so much fun to play because you could run around and interact with a fully realized Konohagakure. Even the ninjitsu was incredible.

  30. sasori obi the kenpachi puppet master

i loved gta vice city in the past but gta 5 should be on the list. baised list confirmed….made by fanboys.

    1. I played the Last of Us. Whether it should be considered as good as this list has numbered it is rather questionable, but it is an excellent experience. While it can be proven that the game doesn’t really break any boundaries, the characters are very believable and sympathetic, and the story surrounding them (while it does borrow more than a few ideas) is very gripping and well-made at the very least, weaving some complicated ethical dilemmas throughout (Hoooo boy, the ending). Concerning the gameplay, I haven’t played many shooters or stealth games, and opinions on the parts of TLoU’s gameplay that involve those things vary pretty widely, so I’m just going to say that part was good, (never all that dull, but not anything special either) but the rest of the gameplay is used to enrich the world of the game through exploration, optional dialogue, and some entrancing atmospheric moments and environments. As for the multiplayer and “Left Behind” dlc, I haven’t played them, and so have no comment.

Overall, while, again, it doesn’t tread much new ground, it has a lot to offer. I found it to be a very beautiful, passionately wrought game, and I hope this helps. :)

  31. I loved the first Halo game. So I’m glad to see it right there. And to anyone complaining about TLOU, get a PS4 and play it. I played it today and it was just mindblowing.

    1. You’re not the only one, I think it’s weird too. It was a great game but a rubbish Zelda game and should be no where near a top one hundred list. And this is coming from a life long Zelda fan.

I also think it’s strange that MK64 is on the list and that high; the single player in it was awful.

And why is Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger is low down? And no sign of Shadowrun for the SNES.

  32. Worst… list… ever… last of us nowhere near where it should be. Skyward sword… possibly the worst zelda game of all time. I could comment more but im outta time

      1. Skyward Sword was good. But not as near as good as Ocarina of Time. Why don’t you sit your fat ass down and take some time to play a great game? Oh yeah, thats right. You don’t do anything in life…

    1. Thanks for summing up my words. I really don’t feel like saying how overrated the last of us is because then ill have to deal with retarded teenagers and fat middle aged bald men who think the last if us remotely is close of being considered a masterpiece. If it excelled more than one fucking category maybe it could be on the upper half of this list.

It’s defiantly overrated as fuck. I need more fingers of how many better games i’ve played. I seriously don’t know what should be number 1 but most games on this list are better than the last of us and more off this list as well.

skyward sword makes this list irrelevant i think i had more fun throwing up than playing that shit. Ever since that i have no interest in zelda.

  33. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is nowhere to be seen. This list officially has zero credibility.

    1. I agree wholehearted. As much as I love Dawn or Sorrow, Synphony of the Night is perhaps the best MetroidVania ever. I’m surprised.

  34. This list really lacks CastleVania: Symphony of the Night, Banjo Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Super Meat Boy, and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. These games are all kings of their genre (Metroidvania/ collectathon/ old school racing/ tough as nails platformer/ 3D platformer).

  35. In all honesty, I’m not surprised that the first Sonic the Hedgehog game is the only Sonic related thing on this list since fanboys considered anything after the Genesis Era as awful and shouldn’t exist. Sad, but true.

  36. Wow, there’s so much that’s wrong with this list i’m not even going to argue against it, just disregard it completely…

  37. This is actually a pretty decent list. I am one to respect others opinions and of course my 100 greatest would be extremely different. That being said the one thing I disagree with is The Last Of Us at number one. It would be about 30th for me.

One note: there are far too many haters commenting on this. Stop being shallow and think about why some of these games might be on here. Consider the time period they were made and don’t bash it just because your opinion is different

  38. I agree with the majority of the games being on the list but the ranking is way off. I would have added Pikmin, Earthbound, Chrono Cross, Metroid, Jet Set Radio and Final Fantasy 9 though.

  39. The ;Last of Us is to video gaming what Avatar was to movies.. Remember how many people told you it was the greatest movie ever?
The backlash for the last of us will start soon.

    1. AVATAR FUCKING SUCKS!!! SHITTY MOVIE!!!! I WOULD RATHER GET HIT ON THE HEAD WITH A BEER BOTTLE THEN THROW UP BLOOD ALL OVER THE LAST OF US, THEN FAINT AND ACCIDENTLY BREAK THE LAST OF US AND THEN WAKE UP IN THE HOSPITAL THAN WATCH THAT FUCKING SHIT!!!! Then the nurse will torture me because i broke the last of us and it’s the only game she ever played so she is one of those people who claim it to be the best game ever and to make it worse she will force me to watch avatar….. because she also likes that garbage and that’s my punishment. So im fucked………. stupid people and their shitty tastes.

  40. Man……..there’s a LOT of turds on this list. And there’s several Nintendo games that deserve to be closer to the # 1 spot than they are.

    1. Your right. There are a bunch of Nintendo games that deserve to be in the #1 spot. Like Majora’s Mask. Highly populated game but not even on the chart. This chart is completely pathetic when it comes up with the best games.

  41. I NEVER agree with anyone’s “Greatest Games Of All-Time” lists. Especially when they add Playstation and Xbox games. Ugh!

  42. Last of us shouldn’t even be near Ocarina of Time. That game deserves the #1 spot. Looks like another fucked up list…

    1. Why don’t you go take that Last of Us and shove it up your freaking ass? Oh yeah that’s right. You weren’t born with one. #Sasoriburn

  43. The Last of Us is a terrific game. It had an amazing story, great characters, epic soundtrack and the graphics are beautiful. Despite that, it’s still probably the most overrated game of all time. I was thinking that that award went to CoD, but no. The Last of Us is very very far from the greatest game of all time. I don’t think people realize what the title “Greatest game of all time” really means. You cannot tell me, that a six hour long, linear, walk from point a to point b, 3rd person shooter is the greatest game of all time. Sorry, but you can’t. The Last of Us doesn’t really have any unique qualities that make it that amazing. It has crafting, that’s been done. It has guns, that’s been done. It has zombie like enemies, that’s been done over a million times the past year. Anyone that says The Last of Us is the greatest game of all time obviously hasn’t played that many games.

  44. I don’t get why people are hating on The Last Of Us. I loved that game imo. It had a really good story, i loved the gameplay tbh, & i think the multiplayer is really fun and addictive. Not the best but its good. The character development was really good. The AI was somewhat useful.Don’t rage at me because i play PS4 & Xbox One, Nintendo is my preferred gaming company.Im a Nintendo Fanboy myself :3

  45. I know that the last of us is a very good game that diserves a 10 out of 10 I liked it alot!… but number one? haha fuck off :3

    1. haveing said that, I know its the best game to some others who have different tastes and what they want out of their entertainment can differ greatly from person to person.

      1. I never said it was the best game ever. It was one of the best I’VE ever played. Im not sure what should be number one though

        1. well im biased as I put dark souls games above everything.. but aside from that im like you i think, no idea if anything can be top.

  46. I’m going to be fully honest. I don’t get the love for The Last of Us. I tried it out briefly long ago (though I forget when) and honestly, it just felt like survival horror 101.

The characters were okay (nothing mind-blowing) and the game felt kind of stereotypical than anything else. Not saying that it’s a bad game or anything, just that I don’t get what makes it special.

  47. I’m sorry, this is bull.
To it’s defense, The Last of Us was a really, REALLY great game.
But no way, is it even close to being the best of all time.
It wasn’t at all reveloutionary, and it’s not even the best of it’s genre.
The story, is arguably the best. But the game on a whole, HECK. NO.
People need to seperate the Best games from their personal favorite.

  48. For me, The Last of US is a good game, but it doesn’t deserve to be number one. I believed, that after a couple of years most people won’t even remember the game. It doesn’t have that lasting appeal. Just my thought.

  49. the last of us? seriously? i mean sure it’s a good game and it’s been hyped beyond compare.. but the best of all time? gotta be kidding me

the reviews don’t live up to that claim either way

  50. to be honest for me does matter the ranking in that list as long as the game is in that list. but seeing FF VIII and not FF IV or VI as well as FF tactics, double dragon, seiken densetsu 2 or xenogear make that list a joke. The list need to take into account several several factors such as story, innovation at the time, creativity, success when the game came out. I did not see resident evil and god knows I hate the game.
