Kotaku Chats To The Guys Who Hacked Mario Kart 8

Online gaming publication Kotaku recently had the opportunity to chat to Chadderz, who is a programmer, and his brother Bean about their successful act of opening up Mario Kart 8. The brothers have posted some hilarious videos including launching Luigi into outer space and how to get him to float in mid air. Here’s what they had to say about their Mario Kart 8 hacks.

“I don’t want to go to bed at night thinking I’ve ruined thousands of people’s fun.”

“The console is such a complicated system that there are bound to be hundreds of mistakes—for example, things like spelling errors, coding errors, bad assumptions, etc.” To exploit a system, one just has to “look for a mistake.”

“The Wii U was a bit of a fortress,” Chadderz explained over Skype, comparing it to the original Wii. “Nintendo’s really done a better job this time around.”

“They broke all the way into the console,” Chadderz said. “We stopped early. We could’ve gone on, but what’s the point?” All they wanted to do was lift up the hood in certain games and fiddle around with what’s inside to make it more fun. Anything else was unnecessary.”

“We are about game mods and game mods only,” Chadderz continued, speaking slowly for added emphasis. “This exploit is in no state to be released, and we will not release it. And if and when we do release, we will not release it in a manner that will allow people to do cheating online, piracy, et cetera et cetera.”

“That’s not what we’re about,” he concluded. “We’re about game modding. That’s what we like doing; that’s what we enjoy doing. And that’s all we’re going to do. So please don’t worry; there’s going to be no mega-hacks, no nonsense. Not from us, anyway.”

  1. I hope mario kart 8’s online doesn’t go the same way as Mario kart ds and wii’s did. So many cheaters

    1. MKDS functioned differently than Wii. I don’t think MK8’s online functions like MKW’s, but they’re not gonna release this tool for online-winning purposes. Custom tracks and all that, rather. Don’t worry.
Personally, I only hacked MKW’s online for fun, not for winning.

    1. It’s not possible, in order to use online you’d need to be on the latest version and there’s no way to get code execution on the latest version, and there’s no other known kernel exploit, and even if there is, nobody would go to the length of finding a new WebKit bug, finding a new kernel exploit, and going online to troll people. That takes a lot of skill that only a handful of people have, and none of them are script kiddies.

There are a couple of explanations for this. Teleporting is just an effect of lag. A friend of mine did this in online and it was just because his wifi sucked. I think part of the reason too is, so I’ve been told, is the game “predicts” where your online opponents are going to be. If it’s really laggy, the player will be in a place different than where your game THOUGHT he was going to be.

You are able to get your item faster by clicking ZL as the roulette is spinning. You still have to get an item box, however.

    3. I don’t know if it’s hacking or the game having errors. I’ve experienced what you are talking about though. A guy seemed to be zooming across vastly in front of me and everytime he got an item block be got a star. No exaggeration. EVERY time.

      1. Either lag or MLGPro stopping the roullete and memorizing the item selection to know where to stop to get you what.

    1. I’ve come across two, seriously no joke and no lag either. One guy hacked the VR and had 14k VR when it only maxes at 9,999. The other made his own room that I got stuck in, so we raced twice 1v1 and he could actually get items to generate. Which was super obvious because we were racing 1v1.

The first time I noticed weird things because he wasn’t lagging at all and he still got items and used them just fine like you normally would if you weren’t lagging because I watch my gamepad to know what to expect, the problem was in between the item checkpoints he would generate items even after he used the item I saw him get from that checkpoint.

I guess he got super pissed I still managed to win because during the second race he made it very obvious and during that race I made sure even more to account for every item he got and hit me with because I knew something was fishy. So during the last leg of Water Park which was our second race, all he got was squid ink before you jump the ramp before the finish line, he used the ink but immediately after using that he generated a blue shell, three red shells and a lightning bolt almost all in the same instance. Luckily I was too close to the finish line and it all hit me after I crossed but there was no way this guy was just lagging, as I said he always used the item he got and it never lagged. I watched what items he got and literally watched my gamepad when I crossed the line when he had done this and just saw items generating on his character even after he crossed the last item checkpoint.

I know how the lag can be, I don’t just call people cheaters for nothing but this guy showed none of those symptoms. I know how it would have worked if he was lagging but like I said he used the items he got just fine and they never lagged, it was the fact he was generating items in between then.

I played with him another time, his name is Steve not like that helps since there a lot of players named Steve just keep an eye out if you happen to play with someone named that, when it was only a 4 person room and again he made it obvious, he was generating red shells when he never got any from the checkpoints.

Every time he made it obvious, he would leave the game, which in a way made it even more obvious.

You have to also consider if this Bean guy has already hacked the game, no doubt other hackers have managed to find the same exploits and not all hackers care about being nice.

  2. Not all hackers are bad. While it is very annoying that alot of ‘hackers’ are just kids giving themselves unfair advantages because they are shit at the game there are also good hackers. For example a hacked Wii had custom content for Super Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Kart Wii, Emulators and even a media center app that could play video’s and mp3’s from a USB or the SD card which made the console even more awesome.

  3. The problem is their guys aren’t the only hackers tinkering with the Wii U, other people don’t share the same sentiment, as you can see with morons like nostalgiaww, some people get off on ruining everyone’s fun.

Hacking is one of those things that should be used for good and nothing else.

  4. WE ONLY WENT SO FAR BULLLLLLLLL SHHHHIIIITTTTTTT I SMELL THE HORSE SHIT FROM HERE

    IDIOTS

WE DIDNT WANT TO SPOIL THOUSANDS OF PEOPLES FUN bulllll shhhiiittt YOU CANNOT HACK IT ONLINE ADMIT DEFEAT YOU LIEING SHIT HEAD

    1. sasori obi the kenpachi puppet master

i you think everyone wants to pay $40 for cheap, short and gimped 3ds games. since nintendo has a terrible MSRP with games, there games remain full price forever. emulators, r4, gateway or used games solves the problem :)

            1. Sasori has condemned the actions of Nintendo is my Blood and has seen to it his followers pray for Eternal torment and the destruction of Nintendo is my Blood and a “Certain” loved one if you will. ;)

      1. Evan, you already said that PC sucks… now you’re talking about emulators?
I can see why you’re the most hated person in the world.

      2. You think every girl is a sex toy who gets men in jail, you also bought games for a xbox you don’t have, you also said Titanfall was a great game yet it got an 8(which by your standards means it sucks), you also pirate games because you are poor yet you claimed to not be poor. So adding up together all your past bullshit of retardation, your entire argument is rendered invalid and your advice is rendered untrustworthy and 100% bullshit.

        1. Emulators are legal. Emulators were made for people who wanted to play back ups of old games or use legit bios copies from systems they already owned, not illegal copies and this is stated with every emulator out there and they even warn you if you get busted using illegal copies of games or bios you don’t actually own it isn’t there fault.

I can’t tell if you’re serious calling someone a dumb fuck and then spelling legal, leagle. It is always nice to actually learn more in what you want to talk about before flying off the handle.

  5. Chadderz and Mr Bean are great guys, they were the ones making MKWii custom tracks a possibility (to a big degree). I lost interest in their efforts like 2 years ago, but their streams where they tested and fixed user-made tracks and improved their mod compilation where always really entertaining :)

  6. Unfortunately if they do release it then others will use that to make things that don’t have such good intentions. It would be fun to mod Mario Kart, but I’m definitely avoiding it with my Wii U. I hacked my Wii and, while it’s fun to hack games and play roms of old games, it pretty much ruined it overall. Thankfully the Wii U plays all my Wii games so it’s not a huge issue.

  7. I’m actually impressed at the comments. Besides the “emulators are illegal” bullshit, I don’t see reactions as bad as the original article.

Nice knowing that most Nintendo users who come on here have an open mind :)
