Aonuma Wants Zelda Wii U To Feature Outstanding Cut Scenes

Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed that he wants Zelda Wii U to feature outstanding cut scenes like those found in Hyrule Warriors. Aonuma said this because he’s been hearing lots of praise for the cut scenes featured in the soon to be released Hyrule Warriors.

“Looking at the comments on Miiverse regarding Hyrule Warriors, it’s been great to see a lot of positive feedback. But one of the things that leaves me with rather complicated feelings is that people are saying, “Oh wow, I really love the cutscenes in this game! This is better than the stuff Nintendo does!” Of course, that leaves me a little conflicted, and gives me a mission now to make sure that the new Zelda game that I’m working on can hold its own in that aspect against Hyrule Warriors!”

        1. Don’t be a plank, LOU is great in every way other than as a game. Naughty Dog need to actually start putting gameplay in their games.

            1. Just look at the Uncharted games. How many times do you really jump? Or…how many times can you actually fall from a jump? Most of those games are interactive movies, too.

                1. Meh. Wrong medium imo. Naughty Dog should just work solely within Sony Pictures. Then again, they couldn’t charge 60 bucks a disc and charge even more with DLC. But the consumer could get the vast majority of those experiences (Uncharted games and LoU) for the fraction of the cost at the theater AND on DVD, and without exclusivity, too. I just don’t see much of a game in those titles and certainly don’t think of them as having much to do with videogames.

At the very least, Uncharted and LoU are mislabeled and should be put in their proper genre. Nothing wrong with a more action-packed story. I personally prefer either full-on action like DMC, or full-on interactive story like Ace Attorney. And both the Uncharted series and LoU fail to mesh those genres together, certainly not without hurting both in the process. Either one or the other, or successfully mesh both by emphasizing gameplay a great deal more or truly base gameplay on the story. At least an interactive story like the Professor Layton series adds and justifies a bunch of varied puzzles.

                  1. Oh and if gameplay is emphasized more, that means the story would need to be lessened a great deal and a lot of pretentious elements almost nonexistent.

                    1. If you took away the story from games like Uncharted and TLOU, they would not be that great. The story is an important part of the game…

                      1. Well if they took out their stories, there’d hardly be anything left. But that’s not what I meant. There should’ve been balance.

I guess my greatest displeasure with Uncharted and LoU is…the missed potential. Function should’ve dictated form a lot better. Complicated when the story likely came first, but it should be doable. Compramise bits of the story to better the gameplay but hide the fact that the story was ever tweaked (kind of like watching a behind the scenes look and being surprised by what they did. And while the story edits might be disappointing, you’d be glad they were done not just because the gameplay was better for it, but because it was a better package overall). Eternal Darkness had the right balance (although the gameplay was a bit clunky, even by six gen standards).

                        1. I see what you mean. But I enjoy stories in video games and I’m glad that games like Uncharted and TLOU exist. I like the feeling of playing both a game and watching a movie. I don’t know why so many people are against cutscenes because they can really make a game better. That’s what I like about Subspace Emissary in SSBB. And I am disappointed those won’t be returning. Maybe it’s just me, but playing games where there usually aren’t any cutscenes sometimes feels boring to me.

                          1. Well there’s obviously a huge market for those titles and genres, so regardless of my critiques and fist shaking like a codger, a lot of people have been pleasantly entertained. As long as we have software and hardware options, then those who love games, whatever kind, will dine well. So dine well, friend, I never meant to put a damper on your fun. But dagnabbit, I’m still going to shake my fist like a codger and rant.

                            1. “…a lot of people have been pleasantly entertained. As long as we have software and hardware options, then those who love games, whatever kind, will dine well…”

& that’s what it’s all about. I myself might be leaner than I was in past gens (in more waus than 1), but I ain’t starving, even on Nintendo-only hardware & mostly Wii U Indie titles & 3DS 3rd parties.

                        2. He never said those games were bad. He only pointed out the fact that they’re mostly interactive movies. And you just confirmed it.
Uncharted is far away from a Crash Bandicoot which was a very innovative game mostly because of its gameplay back then. Now they do good games with great graphics no gameplay (or a copy-paste from other games). This is a choice, but I’d so much want them to go back and offer us great gameplay again instead of enjoyable movies…

                          1. And you’re an idiot. I don’t own neither an Xbox 360 nor PS3 yet. But I like some of the games on there. Way to go making yourself look stupid.

                      2. Uncharted is nothing like that. I have failed in a couple of jumps and have had fallen a couple of times not due to being on purpose or sucking. Its a great game. Last of Us though, definitely a horrible game in my most honest opinion, but succeed in every other category but gameplay, broken AI didn’t help either, could sneak through entire levels so easily, thing is I know I’m not a master stealth game player, in fact I’m quite the mediocre one who goes through constant trial an error on a game that requires stealth.

                        1. Depends on comparisons. Their stories are laughable compared to literature, and barely passable as movies, maybe B+ considering they’re completely CGI, designed as “games”, AND are aimed at the mainstream. It also doesn’t help that many of the “mature” elements feel like Naughty Dog was overcompensating (like most M games this gen).

The best I can say (whatever it’s worth) is that they were overambitious and should seriously persue a different medium (either movies (& maybe they can reach the heights of actual films) or books (& maybe they can reach the heights of actual literature)). Now? Gameplay is holding them back. Or they’re holding gameplay back.

                        2. Yeeeeahhh… That’s where I’m gonna have to disagree with you. TLOU is great. I don’t see what it being like a movie means it’s bad. In fact, if it was just a movie, it wouldn’t be that great. Everything about Naughty Dog games from story, gameplay, and characters all come together making a great experience. I tried TLOU at a friend’s house and it is simply one of the best games I have ever played.

                          1. Well one, a movie is something you can sit back and watch.
Two, I’m suppose to be playing, not watching the game play itself most of the time while I just move from point A to point B.
                            In other words: Boring.
Three, as mentioned before, I could sneak through entire levels without being caught first, even when I know I’m not that good at stealth gameplay.
Four, I’m sorry, I think is it is the absolute worse type of game I could ever play, but at least its not Duke Nukem Forever or MindJack, because LOU is leagues better than those.

                        3. Wait, you think that Uncharted is an interactive movie because you don’t jump often?! Are you serious?! Are you forgetting the shooting part of the game?!

                          1. I wish i could forget those shooting parts. Even old games like True Crime: Streets of LA has better shooting mechanics.

Tomb Raider style jumping and climbing parts are best parts of uncharted games.

                  2. The last of us was terrible. Only 10% of the game is gameplay. The rest of it is just walking around listening to them talk. It is one game I truly feel like I wasted my money.

                2. Yes last of us was, but halo is amazing and pulls it off very well, I like this though because it well let the game express more emotion, and hopefully expand on the details and mythology

                3. Can’t say anything about those…but being playing ACIII for about 32 hrs(54% completed…and playing just cuz it was a gift), and I have to say it, almost 12hrs are of F#$$##@ cutscenes…
                  So…please JUST NO!!!

                    1. Maybe you’re are just one of those people who prefer great stories than gameplay. There really is nothing wrong with that. Different types of gaming for different people.

                    2. Was OK…but I hate when -press ‘A’ to skip a cutscene-, just to start another one!!! Kind of annoying…worst than ads on a BD Movie!!
I don’t want that in My new Zelda!!! Cutscenes at WW were just fine ^.^

            2. The only zelda games I played are the ones I could get for free (four swords aniversary edition and wind waker hd with mario kart 8) but I might just pick this one up just because I love open world games and I’m playing ww hd (I’m currently at Ganon’s castle so I’m almost done with the game) and it looks really epic and I’m starting to like the franchise!

                  1. you can just emulate both if you want to. or get link to the past on wii u virtual console and wait for majora’s mask to make it onto the wii u, though who knows how long that will take with the rate they are putting games onto it.

            3. He’s got a point, the hyrule warriors cutscenes are much cooler than anything seen in the franchise so far, with most zelda games they just sorta stand around and talk most of the time

              1. I’m sorry, what I mean to say is
That I’m butthurt that I’m getting crappy games with little kids screaming at each other over kills, myself included.

              2. Facinated by “babies”, are you? Lucky for you, this “delay” won’t bother you since the Wii U is beneath you. Unless…Zelda U was part of your plan to help lure babies into your web and time is of the essence.

            4. Great. 1 of the great things about Nintendo is that they used restraint when it came to cutscenes. Whatever their reasons, the games focused on gameplay & its momentum. It’s fine to have a brief openning cutscene, then 1 in the middle, & a lengthier 1 @ the end , w/ very brief in-game cutscenes sprinkled throughout. But I hope he doesn’t try to act like this is Hollywood. I wish he’d take a page from Metroid Prime’s story execution instead. I don’t know much about the cutscenes in Hyrule Warriors, & they might be good, but I wish the industry would tone it back, I don’t care how much Nintendo & Indies focus on gameplay, don’t break the momentum.

                1. I am full of mistakes today.
What I mean to say is my comments are invalid because I am a baby. I like to have my hand held through beginning to end because I am a lazy sack of shit with dorito fingers.

            6. I don’t think the game will become an interactive movie like Last of us. The Nintendo way is gameplay first. All I believe that the point he’s trying to get across is that what cutscenes you do get to see will be the best ever seen in a zelda game and I for one can’t wait.

            7. NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Don’t listen to those FOOLS! You promised me an exploration based Zelda in the vein of the 1st game! You know what was great about the first game? No freaking cutscenes! Minimal dialog! Just straight up adventuring. If I wanted to watch a movie, I’d play a JRPG.

              1. Yeah, but then you have games like Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess that had some really interesting dynamic moments in the cutscenes. OoT was rather open and embraced exploration, but still had cutscenes. I mean- the scene where Ganon is on horseback and sees Link? The Goron king’s dance? Whenever a boss was introduced? They were all amazing moments [and were all cutscenes]. You’re definitely in the minority, bud.

                1. Yeah, you have Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight princess and Skyward Sword. The point isn’t that Zelda games can’t have cutscenes, those ones should, the point is that we were told this game would be more like the first, and adding a bunch of cut scenes can remove the amazing experience that the first game offered of really feeling in the game as the player. Sure, the other games offer that, but none of them ever really went back to what made the first game so magical. We’ve gotten plenty of looks into the lore of the game, and Skyward Sword is nothing BUT lore porn, which I LOVED. It was fantastic! But it’s been done. Isolation and exploration haven’t been seen in their original form since 1986, and I have been itching to have it back.

                  1. I thought that what A Link to the Past did was very similar to the original. It wasn’t as text heavy as the 3D games, and the map was sprawling. It was a little more linear than the The Legend of Zelda and the town/characters kind of broke that isolated mood you are talking about, but still- I found myself exploring a lot, completing side quests, looking for secrets, and things of that nature [which I did very little of in Skyward Sword]. But I’m sure the new Zelda will have the variety, puzzles, and sense of exploration that have become staples to the series. It may not be exactly like the original, but- hey- it might be better.

            8. We’ve seen how loads of cutscenes can ruin a Nintendo game. Other M proved it! Don’t go in that direction!

Those cutscenes work for Hyrule Warriors because the game blends well with that kind of mechanic. Before going out of your way to work on something like that, ask yourself if that would blend with a Zelda game well enough to be done.

Now, if we’re talking simply about the quality of the cutscenes, but not making them pop up everywhere, like most games do nowadays, then I’m all for it. Something that shows Ganon’s fearsome power instead of just saying he is powerful like Ocarina of Time or Wind Waker did would be a great step forward.

I’m a bit worried about his statement on the matter, but I really don’t know if this is gonna be a good thing or not.

            9. sherlockwillfightbilbo

Fantastic. I was worried this game was going to lack in the cutscenes department. I’m a little uneasy that he’s only NOW making it his mission…

            10. Hmmm, not sure how I feel about this, in an adventure game like zelda, where you’re exploring the world, cutscenes can kinda break up the gameplay, and interrupt whatever you’re doing.

            11. As long as its not over done as MGS4 or as pointlessly stupid as…Other M (fuck), then it should be okay. Just do not put too much focus on cutscenes but rather make the next Zelda gameplay and exploration as revolutionary as possible.

              1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

Lol. People were complaining about MGS4 having too many cutscenes so they focused on gameplay and put way less in MGSV. Now people are complaining it doesn’t have much story. XD

                  1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

I know. The majority of people love it. I’m just talking about the salty people. Lol.

                      1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

I have it on PC but haven’t gotten around to it yet. It would be my first actual MGS game so I have no idea how the story works. Haha. Recently, I’ve been playing a lot of Arkham Asylum and it is completely awesome. It exceeded my expectations. Didn’t know Arkham Series was this good. XD

                          1. HollowGrapeJ (The Legendary Video Game Master And Anime Wizard)

You could look up the order of which you should play them in. But I’m not gonna bother with that. It will take far too much time and money. Main reason I was looking forward to MGSV was the gameplay. Story is just an awesome bonus for me.

            12. Outstanding cut scenes huh? Just pay attention to The Last Of Us and Metal Gear Solid. That’s how you do a cutscene. I don’t care what any of you say about either, especially TLOU, I fucking loved it!

              1. I only like the cut scenes as long as they are STORY RELEVANT, not pointless ones that aren’t needed (A Big Lipped Alligator moment).

                1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

At the same time, I hate it when I’m exploring an area in a game and I cross a certain point in the map and a story cutscene starts…before I can finish exploring all the other parts of the area. Sometimes the event causes my character to go somewhere else, so I can’t even finish exploring the area.

                1. I suppose I should then. I do occasionally go there, but not that much. I seem to be able to have much better conversations with people over there. And plus, there are multiple different gaming sections instead of just “Nintendo” so I’m more likely to meet true gamers there. Hm… I take your advice then. I’ll be on my way. :D

              1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

I’d be fine with voice acting amongst the main characters but not Link. I also think giving NPCs voice actors is dumb. Xenoblade got the balance just right.

The ONLY reason I don’t want Link getting a VA is because I just know I won’t like the sound of him :/

            13. I love awesome cut scenes! That was my favorite part of Sub Space Emissary in Brawl so I can only imagine they’ll be even cooler looking in the new HD Legend of Zelda game.

            14. Zelda U could be the start of voice acting (exclusing the CD-i games, but we all know how those went). Not Hylian, but just an English and Japanese dub. So long as they keep Link silent then it should turn out fine.

            15. I love both the Uncharted series and The Last of Us, I love Nintendo’s IP’s, but still Naughty Dog games ARE AWRSOME!

            16. I just hope that they don’t let cutscene stand in the way of gameplay too much.
Zelda is an action adventure game that requires you to travel and discover a whole world, (not as big as rpg, but still a world), unlike TLOU. Too many focus on cutscene (making too many or too long scenes, spending so many times in the quality of cg videos) may possibly hurt gameplay more than you think. TLOU is a survival action game, but due to the quality of graphics and cg scene it needs 26gb in size. It is not a good idea if Ninty decides to do such thing to Zelda games. Not until they have a next gen console with high disc capacity. Same goes for other big world exploring games like rpgs, open world, etc.

            17. omfg! everyone is freaking out thinking that zelda will have more cutscenes then gameplay! if you learn to read it said that aonuma wants to feature OUTSTANDING cut scenes! meaning there will be no more then there allready was supposed to be but that they either lengthen and make it more epic ( while making the cinematic really look pretty ‘) that is all that they meant! the actual gameplay will be the same (which is going to be really big)

            18. one thing Nintendo does very well is games with very good equilibrium. so I think gameplay will not suffer with this new idea

            19. I love the sound of this. Better cutscenes would be nice. Like a cutscene that has Link being badass would be nice. Or a cutscene that shows just how powerful the main villain is, so when we finally have Link defeat them, you feel a sense of accomplishment that this little boy took down such a god-like villain. (This is one reason why the fight with Demise wasn’t as great as the final fight with Ghirahim. Time & again, we saw just how dangerous & powerful Ghirahim was, but with Demise, we only heard of how great & dangerous his power was.) Or like the one from the teaser trailer with Link leaping off the horse & firing that arrow at the enemy that was chasing him.

If Aonuma should take inspiration from anything, it should be Xenoblade Chronicles, though. It had great cutscenes that were long but didn’t take away from the gameplay. The areas were huge & didn’t lack in life as the areas were full of enemies. Sure there were sections of the areas that were lacking enemies, but as soon as you got past that point, you quickly came to an area filled with enemies that made up for the fact the previous section of the area was lifeless. And sometimes, those empty areas were only empty because the real threat of the section was wandering about or could only been found during a certain time of day. With that said, Xenoblade Chronicles had what Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword were lacking and did everything that those two games did good better.

            20. Just finished Half-Life 2 recently, no cut-scenes, not even in-game cut-scenes, it really immerses you into the game, I hope the cut-scenes or all in-game (not pre-rendered) or not at all. A game can survive without cut-scenes.
