Japanese Charts: Nintendo 3DS Sells 39K, Wii U Sells 7K

This week’s Japanese software and hardware sales figures are in thanks to Media Create. As expected the long-awaited Super Smash Bros on the Nintendo 3DS claimed the top spot, but what is interesting is the only marginal boost for Nintendo 3DS hardware sales. Bungie and Activision’s Destiny has also performed well and is placed at number two and number three positions in the charts. Here’s the best-selling software and hardware this week.

      1. Nope, handhelds as well as their software typically sell better than consoles in Japan. The only region it could sell better is possibly in the Americas but that’s it.

        1. True but SSB 3DS sold about 170K more than SSBB (launch) , that’s not that much more, so there’s at least some hope that WiiU will out sell the 3DS version.

  1. I kinda expecting the 3DS sales not getting a huge boost. That’s what happens if they announce the new 3ds. Although when that comes out it will sell a lot.

      1. Too late. XD Sickr already started it. lol

Anyway, this was very expected. Smash Bros. is too big to fail. ^_^ imagine if it was released world wide at the same time? A good 5-7 million sold copies in one day. :3

          1. Yeah there ya go, people attend to just get it…why? “Luk at them grafix man, fuk yeah main, hey when is the next realistic game coming? Madden, oh okey main, yeah we about to see someting.”

            ^ average idiot or brodude.

    1. Nintendo Sub-Lieutenant

I commend the consistently high sales the PS4. I really do. Anything to guide young and impressionable children away from the poison of the mobile gaming community. While rivals, I would hope we could set our differences aside to combat an increasingly annoying threat to our way of life. Home console gaming. With big budget games.

  2. upcoming wiiu games supermariogalaxy3 supermariosunshine remake captaintoad tresure tracker yhosi wolley world smashbros 3ds and wiiu and the legend of zelda shrimpshield

  3. Wii U needs a Monster Hunter exclusive bundle or Dragon Quest exclusive bundle and fast if it wants to bring its numbers up.Anyways, nice to see that Smash Bros. did so well for it’s first week. I heard Nintendo predicted it sold over a million units combined between physical and digital copies within the first two days. Now if only we could see these kinds of numbers for Bayonetta 2 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

    1. not gonna happen on the wii u version. they’ve given people no incentive by making consumers have to pay more and wait longer for what sakuri has said will be the exact same game but look prettier. :/

  4. The 3DS does not really have many more in Japan to sell to, plus new 3DS on the horizon. Wii U Smash will very much boost Wii U sales though.

  5. Cap'n Nintendo Beard of the Nintendo isles

    Argh, I expected as much

Destiny seem ta be a popularrrr game, and since nary a soul buys it on Xbox in Japan, they buy it on PS4.

But all the Wii U be needing is Smash and we will be a shore for at least until we get a new system seller Har Har Har.

    1. Don’t get your hopes up too much. The handheld software is bound to do better than the console software so the Wii U version of Smash will not outsell the 3DS version. We will be lucky if it shifts any units of hardware significantly.

          1. Based off of what?
            Smash originated on home consoles.
It’s going to continue to sell best there because that’s where people can and WILL get the kinds of controllers they want for their Smash experience, amongst other reasons.

            1. Except you forgot to take into account that there were far more Wii’s sold when SSBB released as opposed to the number of Wii U’s.

              1. Install base does not directly reflect the full potential of a game’s sales.
A game like Smash will likely be the cause of a LOT of moved Wii U units. I’ve met plenty of others that are waiting specifically FOR Smash, to pick up a Wii U, in fact.
And even taking that into account, there’s 7M players out there with Wii U’s.
                Seven. Million.
It’s not inconceivable that the game could sell well over the 3DS with the amount of players its currently got, especially now that the majority of its user base is core gamers instead of casuals, because the casuals have mostly moved on to phones and PS4’s.

                1. I gue ss. But the 3DS has a ridiculously large install base. I doubt 7 million Wii U owners can surpass all those with a 3DS. It’s guaranteed to get outsold by 3DS by a long shot. If Wii U does surpasses the 3DS’s version, it won’t be until a long time. It’s like how Minecraft started out on PC but then got outsold by the console versions because there’s way more players there.

                  1. IMO, Minecraft sold better on consoles because consoles are seen as the cheaper/easier gaming alternative when compared to the complications and upgrading prices that PC’s have to deal with on a regular basis.
Community modding will always make Minecraft better on PC regardless of sales, IMO.

But I digress; I don’t feel there’s any logical reason to say that it’s guaranteed to sell best on 3DS, let alone to say the install base is reason enough.

There are enough big differences between the two versions [one of which, Gamecube controllers, is a huge deal to Smash players that are serious about competitive play] to convince me that the Wii U version is going to be the game that shows a large bump in units sold, on top of topping the charts above the 3DS version.

Shall we make a friendly wager on the matter?
I’m up for it if you are.^_-

                  2. LOL, I just thought up a great one; if it does outsell the 3DS version’s first two days at market, you’ve gotta post up that Luke Skywalker video where he’s crying and screaming “No, that’s impossible!”

                    1. First two days at market?! LOL how are we gonna know that? Don’t they only post weekly? Or monthly? Anyways, if I’m right, (and I always am) then you shall never underestimate me again. XD

                      1. How will we know that?
Same way we always do; it’ll be reported.

                        For example:

                        http://n4g.com/news/1588112/super-smash-bros-3ds-sales-top-1-million-in-japan-during-first-two-days

In case you’re just not in the mood to follow the link; the combined physical and digital sales of Smash for 3DS, surpassed 1M units in its first two days at market in Japan.
                        JUST Japan.
And that’s the version with the fewest controller options and the most limited options for online interaction, as well as a much more limited amount of music per stage.
So, yeah. I’m confident that I won’t need to call you Master.
                        That’s kind of creepy, anyways.XD

                        1. But you forgot one thing, Smashbrolink… Console games don’t sell as well as handhelds over there! :P Even if Smash Bros Wii U beats everything in the charts in Japan, it is almost guaranteed to sell less than when the 3DS version released. Just because it’s a console. So ha!

                          1. Yeah? Well people were saying that, because of the recent issues with the gaming market as a whole, Smash 3DS wouldn’t hit 1M before its first 6 months.
                            Look where we are now.
If that can happen, then the Wii U can definitely defy the odds, too; it is, after all, the best-selling home console out there, despite the overall issues that consoles in general have had selling there.

And even if it doesn’t out-sell the Japanese version, we’d have to be loony to think it won’t get similar or better sales out here in the states.

                              1. The US?
We have to wait to see the sales of the 3DS version out here, but considering how important online and GC controllers have become to Smash fans out here, I’d say it’s fair to say that the Wii U version out here is still the most highly anticipated version.

                                1. No, no, no, no, no… Lol you forgot that US is the place where shooters and sports games sell. If Smash Wii U comes in November, it’s gonna have to go through hell. Assassin’s Creed Unity, that PS4 game called Driveclub, Far Cry 4, XB1’s Master Chief Collection, Pokemon, and of course, the game that’s probably going to beat everything on the charts, CoD AW. XD I really hope Wii U pulls through. Hoping it doesn’t get overshadowed by Smash 3DS and all these other games…

                                  1. Ridley 2 Big 4 Smash? More Like 2 Big 4 U Wiiklings 2 Control! Leave Him 2 The Masters!

Unfortunately, we won’t really know how well it will do in the United States since they like to jumble all the damn multiplats into one single spot.

                2. Wow the sales of Smash Bros., great stuff.
Also surprised to see Destiny doing so well, considering it’s not a japanese game. I thought Japan only played games with whiny 14yo-looking girls and badass dudes with swords.

                3. Wow…I’ll be honest, I was not expecting xBoxone to drop so steep in it’s second week. Oh well!

Also surprised the 3DS is still selling so well with a new one on the horizon! Maybe prices have been dropping?

                4. ok,i think smash will shift some wii u’s from the look of things.Nice jump for ps4,guessing its the white one.Japanese love s.e. consoles.

                5. Saw you earlier today saying you gave away your last code on the same site. So what, nobody wants it ? lel
Don’t know what you’re trying to do with that website, but I’m not clicking this link in a million years, too scared for you to be one of those losers stealing people ’cause they didn’t have the balls to carry their own life.

                6. 10x Second place, Smash Bros dominated Japan, now imagine if the New 3DS was launched along side the 3Ds would have destroyed everyone. Also, Xbone, more like Xboned……….

                  1. Why don’t you care about the Japanese market? It is a very important market for both Nintendo and Sony. Everybody says that console gaming is dead in Japan, but the reality is that it hasn’t changed one bit from last generation.

                    1. Maybe that was the wrong way to put it… but I also don’t care much about the UK charts either as I am in the states. I do like that Nintendo stays consistent in Japan, even if the Wii U doesn’t have great numbers… but my my man thought on Nintendo is that slow and steady wins the race and they are doing fine.

                7. Yea, honestly the Xbox one could be in trouble if sales slip even a little in the west. Sales are still pretty strong for Xbox here though. It’s Nintendo I’m worried about.

Last year from September-October Nintendo sold right at two million Wii U’s. I hope Nintendo can at least match that this year, and maybe do even better. Sales are up so far year over year, but we are just now getting into the holiday season for Nintendo. If Nintendo can sale three million this Quarter, that would put them right above ten million going into 2015.

                8. here you can see howe popoulare online gaming is…
                  destiny rises the PS4.
smash for U will rise for two weeks to 17k and 12k

                9. Ridley 2 Big 4 Smash? More Like 2 Big 4 U Wiiklings 2 Control! Leave Him 2 The Masters!

Is Hyrule Warriors even getting marketed over there in Japan? You’d think Japan’s COD with Zelda plastered over it would be doing a hell of a lot better than this.

                10. Wow… so while the rest of the world is enjoying that not really Halo/Borderlands love affair, Smash outsells it in Japan by a factor of six-to-one at least?

I don’t think the Wii U version will be as successful, but stranger things have happened.
