There’s A Tetris Movie In The Works

The team behind Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation have announced that they’ve teamed up with the Tetris company to produce a live action movie based on the classic franchise. The team have reassured gamers that the film won’t simply be about moveable blocks, but will instead be an epic sci-fi movie. They also say they have a strong narrative for the film.

“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie… This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes. Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind ‘Tetris’ which makes it a much more imaginative thing.”

“Everyone knows that Tetris is one of the best known, most beloved brands in the world,” said Kasanoff. “What everyone doesn’t know yet is this epic sci-‐fi story that we’re going to tell. That’s what’s really exciting.”

“What started as a simple, computer puzzle game 30 years ago, today is part of our global consciousness, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds and feeding our innate desire to create order out of chaos,” says Henk Rogers, Managing Director of The Tetris Company.”

“We look forward to partnering with Threshold Entertainment to re-imagine that common experience and bring a spectacular new Tetris universe to the big screen for the first time. In this new universe, as you’ll soon find out, there’s much more to Tetris than simply clearing lines.”

…. Remember Battleships… the Movie based off a Board Game…. yeah, this movie is going to be like that… BECAUSE THERE’S NO FUCKING REASON FOR A MOVIE OF IT…

Seriously, did someone really think “Hey, you know this game is really awesome… I hope they make a movie about it.”… NO ONE WANTED IT! If they pull it off, I’ll eat my hat but when the lines say “The team from Mortal Kombat and Annihilation” should up… abound all hope ye who enter here.

  2. Nintendo is my Blood Reborn

Fucking kill me right now, this is as bout a good idea as recycling surgical tools from radioactive exposed rusty metal rods.

  3. The actual story here is they’re making a crappy little film and are trying to make people care by pretending that you could possibly attach a plot to Tetris.

  4. they really have to make a movie out of everything.. i mean battleship already turned out as expected.. a shitty movie with even more ridiculous “sci-fi plot”.. this sci-fi plot will be even worse i expect

    strong narrative my ass

    1. Well the first movie was pretty damn good. It’s the second one that was not exactly bad but wasn’t really great, either. The second one felt more like the games, though, with mostly fighting with story thrown in here & there.

  5. Sci Fi epic eh? Let me guess : Vladimir Putin decides to destroy the world using spaceships that look like the Tetris blocks, but the fatal flaw in them is that they cant come into contact with each other because the ships will interlock and explode.

  6. I’ve seen a rise in over-the-top scifi/horror movies purposely made to be silly (or at least it seems, see Sharknado, the Megashark Series, Sharktopus (sidenote, why do they all seem to involve sharks…?) etc.) And it isn’t entirely something I’m against. I’m simply waiting for the next iteration of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to surface due to this seemingly random onslaught of B style movies coming out of the woodworks. I watch them and enjoy them as a laugh, cause I have a permanent MST3K track running in my head when this style of movie comes on.

    1. It’s like all of these movies are being made with the sole purpose of giving new material for a revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000. xD

    1. But the difference being that the Lego Movie (and Lego Video games) are awesome. Tetris is boring and only got popular because it’s so simple… Place a block here in between these blocks and WOW! This is so innovative! Lol. This movie will probably be terrible.

      1. Whether Lego movies are awesome or not, the real difference is the potential for related stories. By default, Lego provides the building blocks for peoples, places, vehicles, etc. Its versatility, style, & physics translate well into creating worlds, characters, & plots.

Tetris, however, is pure gaming, where goals & the player make an experience w/ out an actual story. The Tetris “movie” is nothing more than brand exploitation. Just slap that popular name on any ol’ story & it advertises itself. For me, that ploy has already backfired, immediately losing their credibility. But as for a story, they can add anything really, because all it is in a story context is a name.

        1. In my opinion, a Tetris movie just screams Super Mario Bros The Movie. The Mario games were also pure gaming back in the day that were given a story when made into a movie. I actually enjoyed the Super Mario Bros movie for what it tried to be, so I might give this movie the shadow of a doubt.

          1. @ least Mario had characters to make a movie. But Tetris? Well, I’ll believe it when I…read a preview closer to its completion.

I enjoyed the Super Mario Bros. movie when it came out. Haven’t seen it again, though.

            1. Like I said, it better have aliens in it or go full on fantasy. Otherwise, it will be utterly ridiculous to go the realistic route with this movie. Not unless they want it to be in a future revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  7. Epic voice- “In a world where the sky is made of interconnected Tetris blocks, aliens are about to rain them down”. A micheal bay film, starring megan fox, The Rock and melissa Mccarty as the tetris blocks.

  9. So instead of making an original movie based on creativity and artistic imagination, they are simply taking the lazy route by using the fame of an already existing franchise and try to milk it even more than it’s already been milked? can’t wait.

  10. Ahahahaha… No… I don’t see how this can work after Mortal Combat was a *cough* FAAAIIIL. Don’t take my money, I’d rather save it for a Xbox, cause I need one since Minecraft ain’t coming to the Wii U.

    _ _ n_ _ Notch.

      1. I enjoyed it. Saw it @ the theater. It’s far & away better than the Street Fighter movie (also saw in theater), & that’s coming from a huge JCVD fan. Too bad Brandon Lee was unable to be in Mortal Kombat 😳; & its Johnny Cage was definitely written for him.

        1. I loved the Street Fighter movie. It wasn’t as great as the Mortal Kombat movie, but while the MK movie was being serious, the Street Fighter movie was cheesy & funny.

  11. You gonna buy an xbox one for minecraft? You know you can actually get the full version on your phone or tablet, right? Not the cheap old pocket edition they used to have. Its the full version, identical to the xbox version, maybe little lower frame rate… I got it, pretty fun..

  13. Unlike Battleship which could have been a great movie if made in an alternate version of our earth where most of the planet is water & warfare is mostly done by way of battleships, a Tetris movie would have been perfect for Michael Bay to throw in fucking aliens from out of nowhere since the game doesn’t have any way to be given a realistic approach to a story. Aliens for Battleship was completely stupid since the game involved two sides at war using battleships, not one side being battleships while fighting alien invaders. In other words, fuck you once more, Michael Baysplosion!
