Nintendo UK Says GameCube Adapter Will Only Work With Smash Bros, Apologises For Confusion

Nintendo UK has retracted a statement from their online store which originally stated the GameCube Controller Adapter would work with other Wii U software. Yesterday, we reported that software such as Pikmin 3 or Mario Kart 8 which supports the Wii Classic Controller, the Wii Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller would be compatible with the GameCube Controller and the new adapter.

Unfortunately, Nintendo UK now says this isn’t the case and apologises for any confusion or upset caused by the online store’s mistake. The Nintendo UK Online Store has now rectified the issue on the website saying the adapter will only work with Super Smash Bros for Wii U.

“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”

      1. Yeah cuz you have like 100 different controller options in other platforms.
“Gamers” nowadays sucks!! We use to be happy with 2 buttons and a freaking pad or a joystick (Atari).

        1. Other platforms don’t make controllers like these to capitalize on them…If you make different controllers, give the consumer an option to use them in all of the games that can support them

    1. Thats why im going pc master race or ps5 next time. Im done being dissapointed, i mean, where the fuck is my metroid and crysis 3, i bought the system for these games they just like teasing and BS. To hell with them, at least we get zelda u but the drought of quality is dissapointing. Project giant robot anyone?

    1. Me either. :( Why pay fifty dollars for a controller I can only use on one game. And can we please duck tape everyones face over there at Nintendo Europe! They spoil special announcements all the time!

      1. Some Wii models, especially the most recent models, don’t have GC controller ports, so this would’ve been perfect for it and for playing Wii games on Wii U.

I am not fully convinced, why release a controller and adapters for 1 game only? Makes no sense what so ever

      1. Exactly. Pikmin 3 received an update that allowed players to play using the touchscreen on the GamePad and that was only a few months ago. Who says they can’t update it again along with other games to support this adapter and GC controllers?

That said, I’m not investing in this until official word says it will work with other games besides Smash Bros. Wii U- I simply won’t shell out $20 for an adapter that only works for one game.

        1. There are two possibilities here. Either you are retarded or Nintendo is retarded.

Wouldn’t it make more sense if Nintendo would say that they were going to patch future games to be playable with these controllers so that the more people would buy them? If they were going to have future updates they would’ve said that, because as you can see, they are losing sales by saying that it isn’t going to be supported by anything else.

Also, they have no reason to have updates later since the people who bought these controllers know that Nintendo said that they aren’t going to be supported by other games.

Or they are planning to do that and they are so inept in terms of marketing that I’m actually in awe that they still exist.

Pick your choice since these two are the only ones you have.

          1. Well I know I’m not retarded, but I also know Nintendo isn’t retarded either, for the most part. Ask me what I think of pre-2004 Nintendo and I’d probably say they were cream of the crop- past that point, however, many of their decisions have been highly questionable (honestly, who over there thought “Wii U” was a good name for their latest console?).

If they DON’T patch older games to use the adapter and GC controllers or launch GC titles on their Virtual Console and it’s still only ever used for Smash, THEN I’ll add it to the pile of ridiculous decisions they’ve made, but it’s too soon to make such a call.

              1. Actually no- I picked number three: neither myself nor Nintendo are retarded, but bad decisions have been made.

                1. So they are retarded. There is no number 3. You said “If they DON’T patch older games to use the adapter and GC controllers or launch GC titles on their Virtual Console and it’s still only ever used for Smash, THEN I’ll add it to the pile of ridiculous decisions they’ve made, but it’s too soon to make such a call.” So that means that they are retarded and terrible at marketing since they should market this controller as a possibility for playing virtual console games or some other games.

                  1. So by your logic, anyone who has made mistakes is immediately considered retarded? I’m sure you’ve made mistakes- that would make you retarded, now wouldn’t it?

    1. Yeah… maybe they’re wrong again.. wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo Europe screwed up! I’ll consider getting it, but if it’s just for one game I really don’t see the point.

  2. Damn, I was sure -.- that’s a very bad news.
Anyway, when Nintendo release the demo codes for the Wii U version we will share them, so click on my name and save the site in your favourites, be ready to play the best game of Christmas 2014

  3. Nintendo is My Blood Reborn

Nope, not buying this story at all, if a guy can mod his 3DS to use a Gamecube controller when a 3DS is not compatible with ANY controller, I believe a multibillion company like Nintendo can easily incorporate the GC controller in other games.

      1. There are two possibilities here. Either you are retarded or Nintendo is retarded.

        1. “You or Nintendo are retarded” That’s so original it makes retards like yourself think they’re smarter than an acorn. It’s a funny site to see and hear actually. Keep em coming. I’m sure you’ll get the jokes right when I’m half dead in 55 years.

              1. I love people that can’t argue, so they try to bring other things up to conceal that. Like grammar, typos, or things completely unrelated to the topic at hand. You just can’t. Admit that and it’s all good.

                  1. What he means is you can’t argue with him because he’s got a stick shoved so far up his ass that he thinks everything he says is written in stone & everyone else is a dumbass for even trying to say he’s wrong.

                    1. He means that he’s got nothing else to comeback with after I corrected his broken English ass on the spot. lol I bet he always says that every time somebody owns his ass. XD

      2. Hmm not good, dunno if I’ll get it anyway, but something I was hoping for was the ability to play GC games on the Wii U, or specifically GC on the eshop and then use the GC controller adapter with it.

      3. im getting it since their is always a update to make it work so if you don’t get it now do not cry when you cant find them!

      4. Incredibly disappointed. We should keep asking them to make that happen until they do- it can’t be impossible and if that adapter only worked on Smash then it should’ve/would’ve been priced different(cheaper), came with a Smash controller only and had Smash Bros. in it’s name or on the packaging. Calling it the “GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U” implies it will have functionality with the Wii U in some other way, not just one game. If that was the case it’d be the “GCN Controller Adapter for Smash Bros.Wii U” or something…

        1. Why can’t they just use the pro controller platform and design the controller to GameCube controller? Isn’t that easier and cheaper? Why didn’t they think of that in 2008?

          1. Haha good idea. I may still buy one just for Smash, but honestly I can’t see that being the only game this works with. It will at least work with some future GCN remake or VC games if they ever bring the GCN to the Wii U VC.

Also when are you getting online for Smash 3DS? Wii U version isn’t that far away I need more sparring buddies lol.

            1. I was actually going to try to earlier but my internet went out for some reason. I could only access internet through my phone’s wifi (which is terribly slow lmao) I’ll see if it’s up when I get home I guess.

      5. Why didn’t they think of that in the process of working the GameCube for Wii U? All these dumb downloads are doing is taking up more gigs to where you got to buy an external hard drive to cover Nintendo’s dumbass decisions. Obviously it won’t work Wiimode hell they were stupid to make Wii U controllers not work some games off wiimode.

      6. I’m still buying, because Smash, despite it’s current direction, is worth that much to me, but I was having high hopes for compatibilities like Wind Waker HD (a graphical remake of a GAMECUBE game, of course!). I suppose Nintendo might make a software update of it if we pushed for it to happen.

        1. Yeah i’m probably still getting it for Smash too but i’ll be disappointed if it doesn’t eventually support other games. It should work the same as a Wii U Pro Controller, and if they ever do start releasing GCN games on VC it should obviously control those perfectly or even be needed for the games that took advantage of the analog shoulder buttons.

      7. Its basically a fighting sticking. its not like gamecube control has the the same button layout as wiiu pro. I’m sure they will do more with it, but really people just wanted it for smash really, I understand how guys feel, but its not a huge loss. Also right now it only works for smash bros, games down the road could use it, or they can make patches like they did NSMBU to add pro controller support

      8. Just because Smash Bros is the only game that will support it initially doesn’t mean its the only game that will support it ever.

You can’t just have the GC controller be used in any scenario that the Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, and Pro controller is used as the GC controller doesn’t have a left shoulder button, a select button, and its analog triggers have digital buttons beneath them. You would really need to make specific controller configurations for the Gamecube controller. They could potentially release patches for old games to support it though.

As for Wii mode, it sounds like an easy fix to people button Wii games weren’t made on top of a full OS so things are a little tricky to add. They may be able to recode their GC controller drivers on the Wii side to look for a USB adapter but the fact that an actual Wii would have an interface separate from USB might be enough to prevent it from working.

I feel like some of you people get angry without considering why something is the way it is and the others are under the assumption that these days everything can just be made to work.

      9. Son of a bitch…UK just can’t get their shit right about Nintendo. It’s like they did this on purpose to piss off the fans and ruin Wii U even more. UK is laughable when it comes to video games.

      10. I’m reading comments here that people are saying Nintendo is stupid or lost opportunity of making GC controller work on older games.

I cannot begin to describe the sheer display of dumbasses here with short term memories. Have you people forgotten that Nintendo has updated a few games with the Pro Controller use before and just recently with the eShop update? They can and will update older Wii U games for GC Controllers, if not immediately, then shortly after they launch it.

Damn, you people seriously need to calm the fuck down and think for once in your one track minded lives. lol

        1. You can get your point across without calling us all stupid stranga, I think most of us are mad because Nintendo Europe said it would work with all these games and got everyone excited about it and then come out and say, oh sorry our mistake!

        2. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Making excuses for Nintendo not thinking of all that in 2008. When it comes to Wii U, update on this and update on that. If they thought of , 2014 back in 2008, it would have already worked. Wii U is the first console to have it,s latest controllers not work from previous consoles but has the capability to play Wii games and access to Wii OS. Yet you can’t even play smash bros. 1 one Game pad. We can understand games like Twilight Princess and other games that worked off the Wiimote but not working the game pad in pro controller to be tricked into Wii OS to work that during R&D is stupid yet. Yet people with the 8 gig console are soon to be forced to have to buy an external hard rive since Nintendo was stupid thinking 8 gigs was enough in 2014 and to back up their dumb mistakes. Nintendo really thought 8 gigs was enough by 2014.

          1. JTZ from tribe of Judah

Since Nintendo was too stupid into not knowing how many gigs the Wii u would need by 2014 they should have just went back to those cards from Game cube.

          2. Reusing the same old EXCUSE of an attack tactic is getting pathetic. I may cry about your pitiful existence ranting endlessly in vain but I’m not the type who feels sorry for idiots.

            1. Same old excuse? First time I taled about Nintendo not thinking of Gamecube controllers already prepared to work on Wii U in 2008. So when was the last time I brought that up?

                1. Rehashing? 24 hours ago I didnt know Gamecube controller was only for one game. How can one rehqsh something if new information isnt even a day old yet?

      11. We kinda already knew this, but let’s be honest for a moment: It’s going to happen, eventually.

For the moment, it doesn’t work on other games, but that doesn’t stop a patch somewhere down the line for said other games to support it. Nintendo would be rather stupid if they didn’t add support. Not only that, with this peripheral, it’s almost a guaranteed legal leak for GC VC titles.

I prefer Smash with a GC controller, so I’ve preordered the Smash bundle with the GC adapter included.

      12. Yesterday this site said Nintendo said that the adapter will work with a lot more games than SSS. Today they said Nintendo *UK* was wrong and the adapter will only work with SSS. Americans ;).

      13. Nintendo just lost soooo many gamecube controller sales. No way in hell I’m paying the money for an adapter, AND the controller for one game? Hell No. epic fail

      14. In the official site “http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu/accessories#gamecube-controller” says:
“Nintendo is introducing an adapter that lets up to four original Nintendo GameCube or WaveBird controllers work with Wii U.”

So I think it will workas a pro controller.

      15. If the Gamecube controllers DOESN’T work with anything but Smash Bros., they’re not worth buying. I doubt this is the case though. Nintendo wouldn’t make a controller that only works with one game. That’s stupid.

        1. Wouldnt be easier for Nintendo to redesign the Pro controller to a gamecube controller? This would avoid updates and shit like that? Whats so hard about that? But instead make more products and more storage for a GC adaptor just for one game. If they redesigned the pro controller then people just need to buy a redesign pro controller and less stree on the Wii U console since it’s already a 2008 console comepeting with consoles made for 2014 since Nintendo thought by the time Wii U was done, it would still be 2008. When Apple thought about the Iphone 6 they thought years ahead not the same year they developed the Iphone 6.

      16. I wish Nintendo had the mind frame like Apple and Toyota. The Camry in Toyota’s R&D is for 2020 even though it is being worked on in 2014. Apple probably has the Iphone 9 in their R&D prepared for 2018. Where as the Fusion for 2018 will be just more powerful than the PS4.

      17. If Nintendo thought ahead for 2014,someone could have watched Netflix while someone played a game. But Nintnedo was too focused on PS3.
