It’s Unlikely That Skullgirls Will Be Coming To Wii U

Mariel Cartwright, who has worked on a number of projects including Scott Pilgrim vs The World and Skullgirls, has revealed in the latest edition of Nintendo Force magazine that the game is unlikely to come to the Wii U. While Cartwright admits that there’s plenty of diverse indie titles on Nintendo latest home console, she’s not entirely sure if the game would be a good fit for the platform.

“Probably Skullgirls, since we’re still working on it! But the chances are very low for that, I’m afraid. I’m not a programmer, but there are some technical hurdles we’d have to overcome, as well as uncertainty as to whether or not there’s a market for a hardcore fighter on Wii U. The lineup of indies is getting more and more diverse on Nintendo consoles though, so I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.”

    1. It is really saddening seeing the reply section full of ignorant fanboys trying to comfort themselves by forcing themselves to the idea of “it is a bad game” or “who cares” when they don’t know shit about the game.
Being border-psychotic delusional about some fact will not change reality.
Nobody will -die- for sure if the game is not released on the Wii U, but this one is a great fighting game, even if you don’t have a clue about it.
If it happens to come out on the Wii U, I will buy it again for sure. Can’t get enough of Skullgirls.

      1. Ummm, this game blows hard, wtf you talking about? lol
Saddens me to see such mediocrity praised by casual gamers. Go play your ios games, virgin boy.

        1. Fucking brats, every year they come more stubborn, ignorant and full of themselves. Go get yourself educated regarding videogames and then post a worthy negative opinion if you want, but backed with some knowledge.

    2. Have to agree with Jenna Silver. I followed the game before it was ever picked up by a developer. The whole lure was just through the inept artwork by a pervy boy and his followers back in DeviantArt. All that hype and all there’s to show for it is an unoriginal game with an identity crisis when there are better games out there like Guilty Gear X.

    3. They find any reason to keep drawing attention to this game. It’s over two-and-a-half years old. Let it go already!

  1. ok i watched the video and i now suspect it won’t come to wii u because it is too low quality and none of us will buy it

    1. Are you stupid or? I own Skullgirls for PC and believe me, SO MUCH effort is put into EVERY character. The only low quality thing here is your judgement on a game you probably haven’t even played.

  2. This should come to Wii U. It looks like fun! Btw, there is a demo of this on PS3! They beat the crap out of me on there and didn’t even bother telling me how to play. I checked the tutorials and still got destroyed. Maybe the full game is more forgiving. XD

    1. Which the majority of people already own for 3DS. :/
But who knows, we still have 3 weeks before the game’s official launch.
I’m just praying that it convinces people to purchase a Wii U who don’t already own one.

      1. I see what you mean, but the competitives and the fans like me are going to buy it. I already own the 3DS version, but I want to play the bigger Smash, the smoother Smash, and most important, the better Smash.

        1. No worries, lol.
          That’s completely understandable.
We’re just going to have to wait and see how this plays out.
Hopefully, the outcome will result in a positive direction.

  3. I understand that money can be an issue, but why do people make it sound like it’s impossible to have both a Nintendo and Sony console?

  4. The game is actually pretty good. Yo could say anything is low quality as long as the community sucks. But last time i checked, fighting game communities seem to be pretty tight knit and obnoxious enough to make the games fun enough to play.

    1. Because having a wide variety of different games would be such a bad thing, am I right. Every console should have only one single game from each genre !!!
      /s

      1. you know what i mean! I think the game is cool but if it doesn’t come to wiiu im not going to be dissapointed.

        1. Well I consider myself a Nintendo fan. I also have a Wii U. But, I’m uninterested in Super Smash Bros. I played it on N64 & on GCN, but after that, whatever. I do enjoy Fighters & wish Skullgirls was coming to Wii U (& Guilty Gear Xrd, too). Sadly, Wii U is devoid of decent Fighters & so few are made the way they used to be. But I will say SSB still provides a lot of on-disc content & unlockables, I just wish the experience was less manic.

          1. I won’t say SSB is a standard (2D like) fighter because it is not, but you can always set no items, play one on one, select an omega stage and use HP instead of %, and then it plays -kind of similar- to a standard 2D fighter.
Nevertheless, it is still not a 2D Fighter, they are different genres and I want my Skullgirls.

  5. For all those people saying this game isn’t good you guys are wrong. This is awesome I really wanna play it! (even though I suck at these type of fighting games) Just because it’s not coming to the Wii U doesn’t mean it sucks! I’m sure if it was coming to the Wii U you guys would be all over it!

  6. So what your saying is you dont want to play anything else besides nintendo’s fighter/party game on your wii u? Sounds your really limiting a chance try a palette of fighting game variety.

  7. Once again, Nintendo fans are getting shafted when it comes to getting third party support.

It’s time Iwata and the higher ups at Nintendo to get their heads out of their ***** and get really aggressive in getting more third party support.

Yet there’ll be people out there who’ll defend the lack of third party games on a nintendo platform.

    1. Yup. All Nintendrones who think everything Nintendo does is Holy and will bash every company because they don’t bring their games to Nintendo. Those people are just sad and indenial.

  8. Exactly. She’s correct. It’s not fit for the Wii U since it caters to kids. They had to change some things for “Unepic” so it can be more kid friendly which is a shame. If it doesn’t find a way then bravo. If it doesn’t, I’ll understand.

    1. If so then why is there some mature games that Nintendo actually allowed that more violent than this game itself? Hell, they even funded Devil’s Third which is loaded with rate R material so what’s you excuse for thinking Nintendo is only for kids and on top of that, I mostly see and hear those same spoiled fuckers playing Call of Duty every freaking day. Again, what’s the excuse for idiot developers and people like you to think maturity doesn’t fit with Nintendo platform when they have done and allowed plenty of mature games in the past? Pay attention to history because history shows that Nintendo isn’t strictly for kids. They’re tailored to families with some maturity on the side but not as stupidly much as Xbox which all they serve is a universal orgy of boring ass shooters and PS is a mix of both sides.

      1. See. You just specifically said games that will come in game cases. This game is not. Nor is Unepic. The fact that Unepic had to have some changes for the wii U version goes to show they had to do that for the family friendly Nintendo. For example in the original pc version, there is a part where you save female orcs. You then go to their bed and have sex with them. You don’t see it but they put a curtain over and you hear or see (forgot which one) the bed move. Wii U version, it’s just a kiss. There’s a difference to indie games and full blown retail games. So you can’t bring that up to argue with moi.

    2. I also would like to add that the majority of the gamer on th wii U is mature audience, male from 18 to 55 years old hence why they are wise enough to buy the right game, not the most popular game.

  9. I’ve already clocked in roughly 500 or so hours in Skullgirls, one o my fav fighters, it works like a dream with a fightstick, so I’m not entirely sure how good it would be on a console tgat currently had no fightstick available for it, it woul be great for a wider audience to be able to be able to experience how great it is, but I feel like it wouldn’t be the best of ports, so I wouldn’t be too dissapointed if it didn’t happen :P

  10. Too bad, Skullgirls is one of my favorite fighting games. She does have a point, fighting games aren’t very popular in the Wii U, and fightsticks for the console are a rarity. I already own Skullgirls, so I can’t say that I’m too disappointed.

      1. This isn’t about the quality of the game. It’s about the game coming to Wii U at all. If you do not want it, then by all means, just play another game. There are people here that do want it, and I would like for this to come to Wii U. I don’t care if Smash Bros is better. That doesn’t mean this game is bad.

      2. Smash bros would be a party fighter and honestly Street fighter and (while I haven’t played it) Injustice are better suited for other systems than WiiU and 3ds. That’s not to say a fighting game on WiiU can’t be as good as Tatsunoko Vs Capcom.

  11. It is funny how everyone whines that “It is so difficult to make a game for the Wii U”. Well somehow, some games EVEN FROM INDIE DEVELOPERS were able to put them on the Wii U. If you’re programmers are too DUMB to do this, fuck this game and fuck you. I’m so fucking sick and tired of hearing “there are too many hurdles to take”… Bloody stupid devs that are to lazy to bring a game from one platform to another. Shovel Knight was possible, Stick it to the Man was possible and many others. Surely, it too some time, but they were ABLE to transfer their games to the Wii U.

Honestly, I hate it when people seek the easy way out and bring up such bullshit arguments. If you don’t want to support the Wii U, the SAY SO instead of whining about hurdles and obstacles, because you make yourself more gullible as you are.

    1. Right and we also happen to ask those same fuckers to keep giving us gimped POS ports too. STFU man because it’s mostly them who have the nerve to keep serving CRAP after CRAP and thinking we’re as stupid as COD and Destiny fanboys who blindly buy scammed video games every time.

              1. I like Sony but I don’t like the games they make nowadays to much. I mean what happened to Jak and Daxter? If was around during the 90s like you guys I would have been a Sony and Nintendo fan but the games they these days just aren’t made with that charm anymore.

                1. Same here,The games they make nowadays don’t interest me at all. They stopped making the games that made them great like Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper..etc

                  1. What makes me bored with the Sonyans and Xbots is that their games have zero imagination, always human based heroes and down-to-earth crap that has no place in video games…

How about making silly characters or creative characters that don’t involve americanized heroes or humans…

      1. Smash Bros isn’t a normal fighting game, Gamerluce. I don’t see any Nintendo fans asking for games like Tekken, Street Fighter, etc. There definitely isn’t a market for a hardcore fighter. The other two consoles, especially PlayStation, are known for fighting games.

        1. I call bullshit on your post. Tekken Tag Tournament came out for the Wii U, Soulcalibur Legends came out for the Wii. There is a game in development called Pokken (a Tekken game in form of the Pokemon brand). If there would be no request, those games wouldn’t be out and yet, people asking Namco to release other titles of the Soulcalibur series for the Wii U, which the director answered, that if there is enough people and demand, they will do so. So don’t come with the argument that Nintendo fans won’t those games, because it is bullshit.

          1. And just how many people even cared about Tekken on the Wii U? Why don’t you tell me how much it sold on the Wii U while you’re at it.

            1. I would’ve gotten Tekken Wii U if it had a Story Mode & unlockable characters. I really enjoyed Tekken 3 on PSOne. Tekken 3D, however, was a huge disappointment as it lacked a Story Mode & all the characters were already unlocked. I would’ve gotten Injustice, too, if it had unlockable characters instead of throwing $ to acquire them.

If only Wii’s Fighter library generated Wii U sequels or enough interest for new Wii U Fighters. I loved Guilty Gear XX Accent Core on Wii, but GG Xrd skipped Wii U. & while a sequel to Tatsunoko vs. Capcom would have licensing issues, I wish Capcom would release something in the vs. series on Wii U, especially when Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO was on GCN, which had a horrible D-pad.

            2. Mr. Ignoring man knows the truth of Wii U now

Wow so Tekken sold better than Hallow Expected. Can’t admit when you wrong huh?

          2. And to top this, the SNES was the first console, where Street Fighter started and later port of Neo Geo fighter were able to play. And people liked that. It is funny how you just pull this ague out of nowhere, that there is no demand for those games. Just because there are not many people for those game, does not mean that there is no demand. Like I said, if this wouldn’t be the case, we would not had those games in the begin… and no, Playstation is not known for fighting games. That is another bullshit comment from you. Just because the Playstation had some fighting games from the begin with, which two ended into a series (Tekken and the Soul series), does not mean, that Sony’s consoles were known for fighting games. They only had fighting games like many other consoles at this time.

          1. As if you don’t know Capcom and their “love relation” to Wii U. Don’t act like you discovered this just today.

        2. Nintendo used to be for fighting games, true. You can’t exclude Smash Bros from the fighting game category not matter what. Smash bros is a fighting game. A hardcore fighting game, just like they suggest the Wii U has not place for hardcore fighting games. We have been asking for street fighter, Mortal Kombat, and probvably others too, but it seems that the fighting fanbase at Nintendo is too small or too silent to demand those games.

          1. What is it with this “hardcore” bullshit? It is a fucking game. People really need to stop coming up with this “elitism” for things. Honestly, this only cripples the gaming community.

    2. Honestly, every time a 3rd Party game is announced as unlikely or is skipping the Wii U, it’s always the same “That game looks bad, so we don’t care” argument.
You should not be saying stuff like that if you have never even tried the games themselves.

      1. Oh sure, but we should accept it when people say “Oh, the Wii U is crap, so we will not bring our elite game on it”. If this is really the case, the go to hell with this fucking game and their “oh so awesome people”, we don’t need this snobby behavior here.

        1. What are you talking about? If a developer doesn’t want to bring their game to the Wii U simply because they don’t want to, then that’s fine. You make such a big deal out of this. It’s stupid.

        2. Firstly and foremost, I have absolutely no idea what it is you’re trying to argue about here.
If you knew me well enough, you would know that I own a Wii U and have been a huge supporter of the console since I first purchased it at launch, so why would I ever agree with a person that says “The Wii U sucks”? What point exactly are you trying to get across with that quote if I may ask?
This is a discussion about 3rd Party developers. No one ever said that the Wii U sucked nor did anyone try boasting a superiority complex like you seem to have interpreted.
Based on the form of your response it seems to me that you feel threatened by the fact that a lot of decent to good looking games are taking a skip from Wii U.

      1. Mr. Ignoring man knows the truth of Wii U now

Demand? Oh please Smash bros. Is on the way. Like most Wii u owners give a rats ass about 3rd party abandoning Wii u after Smash. And tell ubisoft to cancel Watch dogs. Who the hell is going to buy that game when Smash Bros Wii u is coming?

            1. If you told me you wouldn’t buy my game and you’d rather play someone else’s, then I sure as hell would not make any games for you either.

                1. What are you talking about? I was referring to Skullgirls and the comment JTZ made. Since when have the devs of Skullgirls lied? *facepalm*

          1. No, the ignorant and elitism behavior of the developers like Ubisoft and company, who believes that power and graphics are necessary to make a good game, is the reason why the Wii U has no third party support, which is a contradiction for itself, because there are third part developers, that bring their games to the Wii U as well. Maybe not AAA games, but games nonetheless.

            1. I get what you’re saying, but I was talking about how he literally just brushed the game off and said “don’t care, Smash Bros is coming” Wtf? If I was a Skullgirls and I read that comment, I would automatically tell my team to just ignore the Wii U. That’s disrespectful BS.

    3. Don’t care. Not really into fighting games unless it’s Guilty Gear, Street Fighter or Blazblue. Plus, I don’t want a game that has anything to do with that hentai artist, ZONE. Keep it,

      1. Well, considering this game plays very similarly to Street Fighter in that it’s a six-button fighter, you might enjoy this, even if the art style is an acquired taste.

    4. If this came to Wii U, I’d buy it again- it’s that good and the devs are cool guys and deserve all the support they get and then some.

      1. To the developer team of Skullgirls. But good luck with that, because we mortals are getting ignored by the elite… as always.

    5. i havent heard of any good 2-d fighting game, street fighter like in Wii U, WHY NOT SELL ONE AND HAVE ZERO COMPETITION ON THE CONSOLE?!?!?!?!?!

    6. Seriously?… that’s the most sad assumption I’ve Ever heard. Anyone who has played and liked any Street Fighter title can Not say this is a bad fighting game. The mechanics are a ton more intricate than any Mortal Kombat yet people still seem to like them along with that MK vs DC atrocity and Gods Among Us atrocity of a fighting game. I do play MK from time to time but only because the fatalities are fun, as far as fighting goes however..

    7. Guess I’ll have to just settle on playing Super Smash Bros. in two weeks.

In all honesty I just don’t see the appeal of this game. I know that Alex Ahad is popular, but he isn’t God. It’s okay to judge how awful his artwork is, because it pretty much is. The game isn’t even as original as people make it out to be. Characters’ moves are just lifted from other (and better) fighters. If I wanted to play a gorgeous 2D fighter, I’d stick with Guilty Gear X. At least that series is fun.
